TeeJay yea it really isn’t. Some games aren’t too bad to complete but for the most part it’s ridiculously repetitive and stressful. Especially in games where you have to beat it over and over and over to get everything you need
@@Lucarioguild7 Though to be fair, the issue with completing Origami king is not the collect-a-thon (which is in fact the BEST part about the game) but the no-gameover-gearless-run requirement. Gearless and no-gameover should never be a completion requirement, unless it's specifically baked into the difficulty setting right at the start. Especially since unless you bake it into the difficulty setting, no-gameover can easily be subverted by resetting the game, defeating the point.
I feel like you should just say “ Go for it” when comes to games like this. To Recommend bit beyond completing it. This would help with games that tend to have a new game plus mode with changes, or dlc. And I also know few Games that are a chore to actually complete to 100% but there additional content I always would recommend that is further beyond scope of finishing it.
Origami King is one of the completionist-friendliest games I have seen so far. It tells you exactly, what's required for 100% (including side stuff), it shows you per area, how much you are missing of each collectible (in percent) and gives you several helping items for finding said collectibles. It makes the majority of the completion process really enjoyable. That's a thing they did really well. Even if you hate the combat, the world exploration is fantastic. ...wait, there is a secret secret completion bonus? Huh. Well, since I didn't know and got the normal 100%, that's enough for me. I don't need those extra icons.
I'm just thinking how BotW would be greatly improved by having a similar checklist kind of thing. Like it won't tell you exactly where every korok seed is, but it says there are X left in this one area or whatever. More korok seeds means more inventory, and more inventory means a better experience.
With the koroks seeds specificaly, I don't think it would be too helpful. If they did that with the towers it would basically say "You have 100 left in this big area. Good luck finding them!". The areas are just too big and there are too many koroks for it to be too useful. But for other thing, like shrines, bosses or locations that would have been soooooooo useful.
With there being 900 of the little guys, it's clear that Nintendo intended Koroks to be small rewards for exploring, and not something intended to be 100% collected.
I actually really like this game. The battle system is a bit of a pain since I'm really bad at big-picture type puzzles, but that doesn't ruin the overall experience for me.
@@moonsoon1038 Well, that’s what I tried to do. I’m not the type of guy who wants to wants too play the game while having to look up guides every 20 minutes, but this game had me doing that a lot. Still loved it though
Also, rant aside, protip for all the coins in Eddy River: you can use your hammer on the boat. This will do 1 HP of damage, but it also recenters your boat anywhere, very useful if you barely miss a coin.
@@locomokuu2471 Yeah, I found out by accident, then immediately used it that next run to get all the coins (that giant whirlpool at the end was a particular sticking point before).
Also helps to just suicide and start from the very beginning of the section to try again if you miss a coin and don’t care for the game over challenge.
I love the battle system because coins actually matter as a completion it’s given how expensive everything is. The ring system is fun, it can use some more variety but it’s not terrible or broken either. The game encourages you to solve the puzzle and beat the enemies in 1 turn and it’s satisfying. Boss fights are even better.
Honestly, they really did an amazing job with the characters considering the limitations they had. Hopefull Nintendo can be convinced to let the series truly go back to its core though.
I still think it's Tanabe whose doing this, seeing other Mario games lately try to shake it up more -- IMO just said it in a way that doesn't point it to him.
You know, I really love the completionist videos. Every other review I saw of Yoshi's Crafted World said it was terrible and too easy but then Jirard said it was just fun and simple, so I tried it and it turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. I thought this game looked bad too based on what else I'd heard, but then this video is making me want to try it. Thanks for making these videos, Jirard.
@@TheMetalOverlord Technically you'll ways make a net gain when battling in Origami King unless you screw up horrible in battle. I'm also pretty dang sure since I played the game that I can say that battling isn't the core of the game. Sure it's part of the game but you will be in battles 40% of the game and that's coming from someone who enjoyed and played most battles.

The secret challenges frustrated me, too. I somehow went through my entire first playthrough without a single game over, and got the gold heart for it, which I smiled at. Then I learned about the no battle accessories challenge and about threw my Switch out the window.
Wow that second section of the video discussing how the game was focused on people rather than individual persons was pure genius. Great work, even though I'm many months late after having just finished the game.
1:33 i got scared when Jirard screamed trully upset at the Guy Laughing in the background, It was the most genuine demostration of anger i ever seen in this Channel
Wow, I hadn’t looked into it before and this is the first I heard of those “ultra completionist” tasks for no game over’s and no battle accessories. That sucks. The fact that the game doesn’t tell you about these is frustrating too. I think I would have been fine on the game over’s if it weren’t for the coin-collecting on the rapids section. :/ I’ll be fine with my “almost” completionist rank, thanks.
Someone did bring up the two Illusory rings from Dark Souls 2. One of them was for beating the game with no deaths, the other for beating the game with no save points.
Completing Origami King is all fun and games... Until you find out that you have to beat the game with No Game-Overs or Accessories... conditions that the game NEVER tells you about at least it's an excuse to replay this game again because it's really good
I'm sorry you had to deal with that surprise, man. I am genuinely glad to hear that you enjoyed the game. I get tired of hearing people throw nothing but complaints at games that are really quite good. Thank you.
Still kinda annoyed as to why they can't. With the new rule you can't modify or add new characters. It's no excuse to not bring back the partner system as it was before nor to not bring back characters like Goombella,Bombette or even Koops. Heck, it would be awesome to see one of the Koopa Bros. to return as a party member. Mainly because they were already introduced, therefore it wouldn't be modifying nor creating a completely new character.
It's complicated. It was mentioned in the comments section of Zero Punctuation where the critic (Yahtzee, who I'm a huge fan of) that the rule states that ANY characters of the Mario genre are now not allowed to be changed. Meaning you can't add a hat to an established character, or a beard. I agree: It's a stupid rule and REALLY limits creativity. Especially when you see what they've done to Pokemon (Pikachu alone) with adding silly things. Miyamoto, who is a genius, trust me, I compare him to a God of video gaming in the same breath. Made this decision, others will take the blame, but he has the final say on what happens with the characters of Mario. I wonder if he's just too behind the times to realize how much damage this is causing for him to change. And yes, I know he had a hand in BoTW, but he loves innovation, and BoTW was practically innovated from the first step out of the cave. He would go with it just because it had some much innovation and "uniquenesss" to the series.
Imo origami king is amazing . The combat system is nice since you actually have to use your head and think strategic. The story is great , the music is absolutely amazing and the main/side characters are likeable. The locations are cool and in total - I love and recomend this game to everyone who wants to have a fun time and hours of enjoyable gameplay . 8:37 This would be more impactful if several times throughout the Paper Mario games bob-ombs didn't come back after blowing up. What makes bob-ombs like Bobby different from Bombette and Bobbery?
That's my point exactly! At the same time, it's a real shame that IS the case, because I can see how meaningful it would've felt had that precedent not been established. What tips it over to "wrong" in my eyes is that they still could've come up with an explanation that worked (size of the explosion, certain Bob-ombs being Elites, an issue with the fuse being lost then reattatched...). Even if I didn't like the justification that much, I would've appreciated the attempt at continuity. But nope, let's just pretend this was never brought up before.
@@ShadwSonic 1) It's a different universe, you can't assume that there will be any continuity between games. 2) Bobby is a factory made bob-omb, whereas Bobbery and Bombette are organic bob-ombs. Factory made bob-ombs are made with one purpose, and one purpose alone. To explode, and to be replaced. They didn't act like it was never brought up before, the explanation was always there.
This and the fact that even Bowser minion Bob-ombs can regenerate(just not in one battle due to game mechanics) it makes the whole thing come off as cheap emotional manipulation. The "he's just a factory made Bob-omb!" is a rationalization that doesn't fit when you know the previous games had them survive explosions just fine. They even have them in a little parade at the end of Paper Mario 64 where at the end they wave at you with their little arms.
@@staticchimera44 It's part of the Paper Mario series. Unless it states otherwise, all the PM games happen in the same universe. It's like saying that each mainline Mario game is a separate universe. It makes no sense. I mean, it makes no sense either way, but still. "Bobby is a factory made bob-omb, whereas Bobbery and Bombette are organic bob-ombs. Factory made bob-ombs are made with one purpose, and one purpose alone. To explode, and to be replaced. " Where is this ever said? Why not just have a bunch of "organic" bob-ombs that are loyal and can keep blowing up again and again rather than mass produce them? Why even give them personalities if they *only* exist to blow up and be replaced? Bowser is egotistical, but he's not stupid. It would cost way more to mass produce than just feed and house the explosion resistant ones. "Factory made" bob-ombs make less and less sense the more you think about.
Fans could be different depending on which type of game they want. Some like the newer games, some like the older games. While it could be disheartening to hear that’s its not what it used to be maybe things could’ve been different if they didn’t have the restrictions since stickerstar.
I've owned the game for so long and I love it and thought I did everything, but when I heard there was a no death achievement after 3 years of its release just shows how stupid it is that there is no hints towards that goal.
I actually played through that one twice in the past few weeks. One was before I decided to do a Mario 35th anniversary marathon, and the other was after I had decided to do that.
Ok Henry Stickmin from Breaking the Bank, Escaping the Prison, Stealing the Diamond, Infiltrating the Airship, Fleeing the Complex, and The Henry Stickmin Collection
Aside from the 2 "secret" completion achievements, this game was visually stunning, musically entertaining, and absolutely charming (though sometimes challenging) to play! Some of the best parts of the game include Autumn Mountain/Shogun Studios, Bob-bomb's Sacrifice, and the groovy Disco Dance cut-scene. (Note: if you have not updated to the latest version, there's at least one extremely game-busting glitch that can completely stop your current progress, and force you to completely erase your save file and completely start the whole game over due to how severe it is! What's worse is that this glitch can occur roughly 70-75% into your overall play-through, which means that the potential amount of progress you could end up losing is absolutely soul-crushing!)
You know I feel that these changes aren’t bad in themselves, but they have moved so far from the original I feel like it makes more sense to have made it a new series entirely. There are some people who say this is their favorite Paper Mario game. I’m happy that they enjoy it. I think the problem is that comparing the old and new games are like comparing apples to oranges. The focuses are completely different. Your preference is more a matter of what type of game you prefer, not which game did it best. To be honest I could be speaking out of my butt here because I’ve never beat a Paper Mario game, but I have enough of an understanding to be able to analyze why everything has played out the way it has. I think it would have been great if they established a new series with a focus on innovation and kept this series focused on the formula that people loved so much.
I hope that they can at least make a new series so we can have both styles. I mean Sticker Star and Color Splash had flaws in general game design regardless of what the previous games did. But they've been removed for the most part. But having a series alongside the new style isnt a bad idea in my opinion
Origami King is my favorite Paper Mario game, as I couldn't play TTYD or 64 because of not having those consoles. I also never bought Super Paper Mario.
The only real thing the original games have over how well done of a game Origami King is, is just Original Characters and an exp system. Both of which can be improved into a Origami King sequel. There doesn’t need to be a split.
I think the funniest thing about the extra completionist rewards is that I remained cautious during my playthrough to avoid infamous cases of an unreachable toad barring you from the game’s 100% reward or a glitch in Shangri-Spa that basically softlocked your whole save file. Then by the time I receive the game’s vanilla completionist reward, I find out that the “real” route towards completion is to restart from the very beginning of the game so that I can 100% it yet again but without getting any game overs or equipping any battle accessories. This punch-in-the-gut of a revelation is about as painful as if I had ever wound up having to restart the entire game for any of the other aforementioned circumstances.
If you want some classic Paper Mario goodness, you should check out Citizens of Space. It's the very underrated sequel to Citizens of Earth. Which is a very underrated love letter to Earthbound.
it's probably just some shady committee somewhere in nintendo whose job is to keep mario's brand consistent. in practice though this kinda just means preventing developers from doing whatever they like
@@channelremoved32 It kinda feels like Nintendo is trying to make their own version of the Minions from Despicable Me with the Toads being everywhere. Would make sense since they're moving on to movies and theme parks...

I didn’t know about those extra “no game over” “no accessories” stuff, now I feel bad, some day I will replay it and truly complete PD: nice draw jirad PPD: I hate shy guy finish last challenge
I hate people that keep bashing the game for not being another TTYD and not seeing the game for what it is, but I honestly can't blame them too much as well. Consumers LOVED all the new characters that the old Paper Mario games had. Seeing a side character like Bomb-omb just being Bomb-omb is such a shame.
What I love about the Paper Mario series are the fun stories, witty characters & lush worlds. And I personally feel Paper Mario the Origami King nailed all 3 of these aspects. I had a blast playing through the game. I absolutely loved collecting all the Toads. So much fun! And I thought the combat system was very unique & quite challenging at times. For me Origami King is amongst the best in the series.
@@rem5779 don't jinx it man, last thing we want is the series going backwards again, but don't be surprise is some of these features in that game will return paper Mario returns for The Nintendo Switch sequel.
I think the characterization in Origami king was actually handled really well, where instead of having a handful of characters bursting with personality to offset the ocean of lifeless ones, this game gave every base character an interesting personality.
"We're not allowed to create new characters that effect the Mario universe" *Creates SENTIENT ORIGAMI* Miyamoto isn't just oppressive and out of touch with what people want, he's also a massive hypocrite.
Placing limitations on creating something isn't oppressive. "Limitations breed creativity" is literally something my music teacher taught us. Gamers are such a whiney bunch. This was the best Paper Mario game in years. It's not perfect, but a lot of fans consider it at least good. How is creating something that fans enjoy out of touch with what they want? Because it's not exactly what you want?
I am so glad that this game is getting the positive feedback it is. I loved this game, but I was afraid that like the last 2 games before it, the fans would totally overshadow anybody who thought they were good.
This highlights one of the important questions of game devepment. If you add a bonus for completing difficult challenges, you force completionists to do unresonable tasks, but if you don't, then the people who put themselves through these challenges are don't are left without a reward.
This game is about people because the developers had to use this great writing on pre existing mario characters instead of being allowed to make brand new ones. I personally can't say "Well this aspect of the game is good" when that same idea of being about people could've been done and done better with a group of party members that are unique to paper mario.
They actually already did the "about people" aspect better in the older games. Each Toad had a unique name, personality, design, and even extra information if you walked up to them and pressed the partner action button with either Goombario or Goombette in your party. This also worked for all of the other numerous unique NPC's. Enemies could have the Tattle command used on them to get more flavor text as well. Even in Super Paper Mario you could do this with both the tattle system and the capture cards on top of it. It just involved pointing the Wiimote at the character you wanted to analyze.
Sounds like the "no game over" and "no battle items" should be considered 110% completion after all it already said "you got 100%" before even giving them to you
I'm doing no Death or Battle accessories run rn and the only real problem is being paranoid that you didn't home fast enough and the death still counted, or that tracker accessories go against the qualifications for the special ending. That means if your suspicion turns out true, all you did on this second run was useless.
To me, whenever a sequel of a beloved series comes out, and the reviewer has to make a big speech about how the game is not as good as the ones past it because it's a different era, or that it's just as good and people are just blinded by nostalgia, the game is just not good enough. Take Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey for example, when those came out, no reviewer started their reviews by saying we had to overlook certain aspects of the game because they were trying to do something new with it, or that we had to be more tolerant with them because they will never be as good as the ones that came before. They started their reviews by praising how much of a good game those titles were, bringing new things to the table but still managing to be fun and bring that sense of familiarity to the fans, while drawing in new people. When you have to patronise yourself into liking a game, just admit it, the game is just not good enough
This is exactly what I was getting the impression while I was watching the first 10 minutes. I was expecting Jirad to give the viewers his analysis about 100% the game, but instead he starts off by preaching about the game's good and strongest qualities, and how every sequel has something to give to everyone. That's a warning sign right there.
He really tried to oversell some aspects too like the "people" speech was just looking too much into it, the Toads are just collectibles and the Mario RPG's have done the 'On brake' Bowser minions jokes a lot before this game
@@TwilightYonder720 He also has to seriously downplay the first three games and how it went pretty in depth into most NPC back stories and their motivations. You not only got to talk to them for what they would say, but learn more about them by using the Tattle system.
I would say this is specific to Paper Mario, though, since it really has changed genre. Zelda and Mario are pretty well defined, and the main games don't really stray too far from each other. Paper Mario has specifically built a fanbase around the first two games, and the modern ones may be good, but they're different. It'd be like if the next Zelda game was a 2d platformer, and it was a really good 2d platformer, but Zelda has never had that as a core idea. We must distinguish Origami King from its predecessors to fully analyze it. Naturally, if you're a TTYD stan, then the merit of Origami King is based on how similar those two games are, and they are not. However, it has good qualities that feel genuine to a Paper Mario game, and I don't think that should be overlooked.
After watching Chuggaaconroy's videos on Sticker Star I know realized that Miamoto didn't force the developers to never ever make new characters he only suggested *once* that they shouldn't do that and it was the developers choice to never make new characters in the long run.
I agreed with you on everything for the fact that I also went through the processes just find out I didn’t actually 100% the game. I was just in awe by the environments and music. While I missed the unique characters, I loved the unique personalities. The writers did well to give the game life to a beautiful shell of a game. What I didn’t like was the unpausible/unresetable areas that required a little more time to get the trophies for, and the vast open areas that i wish had more thought in them. I also feel the ending was rushed just a tad. Also why put in achievements that make us not use aspects of the game that make the game more bearable and fun? Other than that I feel Nintendo held the development team back this time.
I’m very glad I found out about the ‘secret achievements’ early on in my playthrough. I found out just after failing a couple times in Eddy River and seeing a video that mentioned secret achievements. After hearing about them, I did restart the file and it took about 3-4 hours to get back to that point.
This is game is actually one of the best "return to form" game I've seen since Mario Sunshine to Oddesey and even tho Galaxy 1 is a masterpiece and Galaxy 2 is absolute perfection without any flaws (EXCEPT THE PERFECT RUN) they did feel linear
I feel like this a " damned if you do/n't" kinda situation: If we don't buy the game, Nintendo may not make another Paper Mario. If we do, they might think people want more of THIS kinda Paper Mario, and we'll get more of what we don't want.
Frankly I'm OK with no "Paper Mario" named games anymore -- just have a new Mario RPG IP that's a spiritual successor (ala Paper Mario 64 from SMRPG) that maybe uses 3D graphics and it's good to go.
Buy Bug Fables, if possible on the Nintendo Switch. It's got more classic Paper Mario spirit in the prologue than the last three Paper Mario games have combined. Maybe if they can see impressive sales for Bug Fables they will start to rethink their stance.
Cerebrum well Origami King is selling better than any other game in the series so I don’t think they’re worried right now. Plus there’s no way bug fables is going to sell as much as Paper Mario
@@hamidmehrdad5805 The places I've seen say TOK sold better didn't show numbers, or had Super Paper Mario beating out TOK in first week sales. Bug Fables also has better reviews than TOK, and by a significant margin on every platform other than PS4.

Like they did with the Maiamais in Link Between Worlds...that came out in 2014. Seriously, how the hell did they screw that up?
With the koroks seeds specificaly, I don't think it would be too helpful.
If they did that with the towers it would basically say "You have 100 left in this big area. Good luck finding them!". The areas are just too big and there are too many koroks for it to be too useful.
But for other thing, like shrines, bosses or locations that would have been soooooooo useful.
You’re not supposed to find them all, and you don’t need that feature in order to max out inventory spaces.
With there being 900 of the little guys, it's clear that Nintendo intended Koroks to be small rewards for exploring, and not something intended to be 100% collected.

The disco dancing hole punch was hilarious and I damn anyone who thinks otherwise.
It gave us Mario snapping the jaw of the stapler dog which is raw as hell.
Also I low-key was hoping that Jirard’s beard would be origami in the thumbnaill haha

@@ShadwSonic
1) It's a different universe, you can't assume that there will be any continuity between games.
"Factory made Bob-Omb and organic Bob-Omb"
These aren't real/canon just head canon to avoid the retcon
@@staticchimera44 It's part of the Paper Mario series. Unless it states otherwise, all the PM games happen in the same universe. It's like saying that each mainline Mario game is a separate universe. It makes no sense. I mean, it makes no sense either way, but still.
"Bobby is a factory made bob-omb, whereas Bobbery and Bombette are organic bob-ombs. Factory made bob-ombs are made with one purpose, and one purpose alone. To explode, and to be replaced.

Where is this ever said? Why not just have a bunch of "organic" bob-ombs that are loyal and can keep blowing up again and again rather than mass produce them? Why even give them personalities if they *only* exist to blow up and be replaced? Bowser is egotistical, but he's not stupid. It would cost way more to mass produce than just feed and house the explosion resistant ones. "Factory made" bob-ombs make less and less sense the more you think about.

Wow it's been a looooooong time since I've been in the first 100 views, mlove your content jirard, you inspire the way I play games

That means if your suspicion turns out true, all you did on this second run was useless.
Obligatory "Bobery was in Thousand Year door as well."
Origami King is probably as good as this format of Paper Mario can get. But that's still miles below TTYD.

I understand thinking fans are being a bit ridiculous or overzealous, sometimes they are.
But at the same time consumers aren't obligated to purchase products from creators who actively ignore them either
Can't please everyone I guess
I wonder when Jirard will finally review Sticker Star... if he ever does lol.
You mean the only irredeemable paper mario (the only thing good is the gfx but hard to screw that up)
@@kamiotamega5317 you can thank shigeru miyamoto for that
