    I respect the one year warranty policy. It's low risk really to you as the owner and it gives the customer a nice warm fuzzy. Honestly, how many times have you had that situation bite you in the greatest ass that's ever lived?

    • @thelbtlover
      @thelbtlover หลายเดือนก่อน +56

      I also run a repair shop and I only sell business class laptops. It just makes sense to offer a 1 year warranty. Even if you say you only have a 30 day warranty, any customer would be p)ssed (and rightfully so) if their computer crapped out on them after 31 days or even 6 months and you told them oh well, pay me hundreds of dollars to fix it. The truth is the parts for business class laptops are usually pretty affordable and the repairs are easier than consumer grade laptops so it's not a big deal if you do have to honor a warranty. You can get an 8th gen refurb for around $200 and if the motherboard dies you can usually get a replacement for $40 - $80. To answer your question though, most business class laptops I sell last for 7-10 years, though people usually want to upgrade after 3-5 years. Only a tiny percentage of business class laptops fail within the 1 year warranty period. Probably less than 1%. You do have to properly refurbish them though. You know, put in a new SSD and replace the thermal paste at the very least. One thing they didn't do in this video is put the computer through full diagnostics, which is what I do in my shop. I own a copy of PC-Check and PC Doctor Service Center, both of which are professional technician diagnostic software. I run full test of the CPU, GPU and RAM overnight to make sure there aren't any problems. You can make do with free tools, which is what I did for many years, but having the professional technician diagnostic software helps narrow down intermittent problems and reveal issues that haven't reared their ugly head yet. This channel does a lot of things right but I don't agree with everything they do. But every shop does things a little differently. Sometimes you can't afford to do everything "right" depending on your customer base and costs. That's why I'm in a more expensive area, so I can charge enough in order to do everything right. This guy had to start a TH-cam channel because obviously they can't afford to do things right even working out of a fricking Subway. Computer repair is a dying field because everything is such cheap garbage nowadays. It would be difficult to stay in business if you were in a lower to mid income area.

    • @SalemTechsperts
      @SalemTechsperts  หลายเดือนก่อน +146

      I’ve sold close to probably 500 laptops and only had 2 come back for an actual hardware failure. I always laugh when a customer brings in something I sold them 8 years ago. The benefit it’s done to my reputation is worth way more than if I were to just have sold them a shitty consumer laptop and made a bit more profit.

    This is why it is a good advice for you to remove your harddisk, SSD or M.2 out of your device before send it to any repair service via mail or walk-in. Or at least backup to other storage then wipe data if you still can do it on the device by yourself.
    But since most people did not know this. Even some people who want to do it but their device is too complicate/fragile to do or do not want to risk any damage to the device by themselves, it still a risk like this happen to anyone.
    If not possible to get data out or move to somewhere, try walk-in at any nearby reputable or trusted repair shop may help prevent this problem. Avoid mail-in if possible unless you have no choice or tried all options left only this as last resort to do (you can purchase delivery insurance for peace of mind at least).

    Local repair tech here Houston Texas. Since I started in January I've watched 2 repair shops close down. My old man has 40 years of experience but had no clue how to modernize. Updated the computers we sold from 9020s, to recent enough 3060s, and increased the price we went the route of less customers but more money. No fake reviews here 🗣️. I keep telling the old man he needs to make a TH-cam cuz unironcoally computer repair shit always pops off

    Because of.you i enjoy cleaning and repairing my own computer and laptop, and also saving money for repair, i even use your suggestion in buying old stuff but worthy to save money its so good that if you pick the right stuff that you wanna and its a 2nd it will last almost forever it depends on your usage. Just like what you said im using your technique in everything it is reliable and efficient thank you for that i hope your bussiness will continue 😊😊

    Man, I love this channel
    Gonna yap my story a lil bit
    My sister was looking to buy a laptop about this time last year and she asked me about some listings on laptops.
    She didn't exactly tell me what she wanted it for, so I just chose the sturdiest affordable laptop that was there (Dell precision 3520 for about 500 usd) and it pushed me into the life of searching business grade laptops (around the same time I started to watch salem).
    Since she didn't really used it that much, she decided to give it to me since I was going to need it for school (I had a Lenovo Ideapad s145 and it just wouldn't cut it for my area (civil construction)) and it's just perfect. I did however noticed that the temps were getting pretty high so asked an expirienced friend for help and changed the thermal paste, but turned out that this specific model has a problem of overheating so that didn't really change much. But while we had it opened up, we noticed that the chipset didn't have any thermal padding so that just might fix things a little bit (still don't have money to but it though), but overall, I don't have any complaints about the laptop. Love it.
    Nowadays I go around recommending my family to go for used good condition laptops instead of the shop laptops since the price difference is actually insane (a decently speced laptop can sell for 450-600 usd on retail when in shops the same laptop is 1200 usd, which I find absurd but do understand the pros and cons).
    All of that is just to say buy used business laptops people, it actually is worthwhile, and most of the time it just needs a bit of repairs and maintenance but nothing drastic so it's a good purchase!
    Anyways that's what I had to say, this comment prolly wont get noticed but at least I try to put the word out there.
    If you read this much thank you for your time and have a great day!

    I agree, a good local PC repair shops are the best. I got my Dell Precision from that shop and at a later date I asked them to upgrade ram and change HD for SSD. When they changed it they even cloned windows to new drive for free (I paid first for just upgrade and forgot to mention clonning at first, and I was willing to pay extra for this because i was not sure if I can do it myself).
    And i must say, its so good laptop I am still using it 3 years later with no repairs in meantime. (I just wonder if i should change thermal paste after all this time because sometimes it does get hot).
    Edit: I actually tested it with cinnenbench 23 and it got 4300 score in multi core which is its normal performance and warmed up only to 82C, so it only feels hot for my knees when I use it on my bed for last 3 years.

    Your message hits home with me. And what you did for your client goes above and beyond. Kudos to you.
    I've been buying used computers for years. And I don't think I've ever bought a laptop new. I also refurbish machines for friends and locals who can't afford it and need a cheap computer to just get online and connect with family. I'll swap out the hard drive for an SSD and sell it to the end user for pretty much what I paid for it. If the computer was given to me for free, the cost to end user is only about $40. Would I ever get into computer repair as a career? Probably not. I'll keep the noodling around with them in the basement an enjoyable hobby.

    I got a refurbished T490 about half a year ago. Did exactly what you said. Just IGPU in a 8th gen I5, quadcore with up to 4.1Ghz, i think 8520U or something, 16 gigs of soldered RAM,with an available slot for upgrading. Plenty for what i do (some programming, office use, TH-cam and playing Pokémon Reborn and other fangames) . Upgraded the NVMe to a 1TB one and repasted it.
    Total, was like 400€, and i happened to start interning in the shop i did it, so data backup and OS installation was free 🤪😂. Also loved how simple it was to do the repaste. The Asus K55VM (third gen I7, GTX 630M dGPU) i had before was a pain to repaste.
    Thinking of getting an heatsink from a dGPU model so that the temps are better and don't have to run the fans all the time.

    I'm sure your customer appreciates what you've done here (I hope). To be giving them something that is not only significantly better than what they had, but also coming out of your bottom line is incredible. I know I appreciate seeing the work you do because not only is it amazing to see your quality of work, but it has also helped me as well.
    I am way more thorough with my PC and laptop now when it comes to maintaining them and cleaning out all the swamp gooch. The amount of gooch that had built up in some of the parts would make The Gooch Collector proud.

It had Win11 pro fresh installation, but I upgraded nvme with 4x the capacity and installed Linux. Since then it had also BIOS and TPM flashed, too. Working well. I bought it to experiment with Linux, first time. I didn't repaste this one but since this adventure I revamped my over 15 yo laptop and that one was repasted. Running like new, on Linux also. Feeling empowered.

    The Think Pads are really nice laptops for business use. I have a mid range MSI gaming laptop, Ill be lucky if it lasts 2 years, but I do try to take care of it. My boss has a 10+ year old ThinkPad, bought used, that he uses to operate a Pass Through device for reflashing automotive modules. That ThinkPad is indestructible. It gets beat around in his toolbox and under the hoods of cars and still works great. I do believe hardware limitations will cause him to have to upgrade at some point soon, but that Think Pad will still be working like new when he does.
