So! I own almost this exact laptop and I love it! *Technically* I have a GE 66 Raider but its not exactly the same. My hinges DID break but I mailed it back to the manufacturer and they repaired it "for free" (I never got a bill so I didnt pay anything even though it was past warranty) and I have replaced the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU 3 times but never on the VRMs. It works great, I can play ANY game I want on low settings and it has enough power to edit videos for work. I LOVE my GE 66 that I have had for almost 4 years and idk what I could replace it with
8.5 out of 10, would recommend!

My Dell 7559 Hinges broke back in 2017 and slowly started falling apart, if ya close the laptop fully the back just props up and looks like a shattered mess but it lasted me until around end of 2019 where I finally decided to buy an Alienware 15R3. That thing is a BEAST and as I've been taking care of it, I don't have to worry about the hinge.

Good pick up, I managed to pickup a Infinity laptop here in australia with an rtx 3070 that was faulty for $465. Its fault was resolved with a simple bios update :D and managed to save like $1k off a second hand one so thats a win.

I have (sorta) an MSI ge62vr with a similarly destroyed hinge. I bought a replacement back, swapped it in for the broken one, and… it works, but the screen is half full of noise. I think the cable got damaged when the top half finally broke free.
There was actually rumblings of a class-action suit over the hinges. Don’t think it went beyond the name-gathering stage, though.
    And nice Prince symbol.

Reminds me of a repair I did on a vandalized high end Dell laptop. For some reason the owner stabbed the ethernet port, power input, and webcam and broke some keys. I was sure he was gonna have some criminal evidence on it he was trying to get rid of, but I found nothing. Computer was clean. Guy was just crazy. His sister gave it to me so I can fix it for her mom. Ended up buying a low end model and swapped the motherboard, storage, processor and webcam. Worked. Didn't even have to reinstall Windows.

14:00 I know the feeling man, I used to repair and customise blackberry phones before (they started using glue on everything) as a hobby. Then it tried to scale it up into a business but the monotony, the silly demands from people and UK customs taking months to process my repair parts killed it. It was really the latter as I could only afford to buy parts at cost when a repair job came in. In order to sustain it I took upfront payment for the repair parts hence why it was sold at cost and there was no charge for repairs because bloody customs took ages to pass through my repair components. So instead of people being charged £50 for a LCD screen I'd charge the same cost as the LCD replacement was about about a few quid. Because I loved doing it as a hobby....

I've noticed that I experienced what you said about doing what you enjoy. I worked as an auto tech for over three decades, and finally quit because I really started to hate it. I then started a hobby shop, and did that for a decade until I was ready to scream. Then tried to make a career out of another hobby, fixing RVs. I'm in the process of hating that one. My friends that are computer enthusiasts suggested I get a job repairing computers. Since I would like to continue enjoying repairing, upgrading, and modifying computers, I think I won't do that.

Those hinges should be metallic plates welded to an aluminum screen cover, or at least welded to two big plates glued to the plastic
