Is there a better songwriter than Jackson Browne? Who else can pour out his heart like he can? Nothing cheesy or cheap in his lyrics, just real life stuff. Pure emotion.

    • @sudeste5073

Who else can do that? Joni Mitchell... Listen to the "Blue" album and you'll see.

@@sudeste5073 Yeah, I'll go with that. I do own Joni's "Blue" album. It's wonderful. I don't think it tops Jackson's "Late For The Sky" album, though.

Yes Neil Young , Bob Dylan, Marshall Crenshaw, Morrissey, Arthur Lee of Love and a hundred more.
Do you think he tries to hard on this song? I don't know I just don't get into the melody but his words are oh so too sensitive "and at the moment my camera happened to find you' now the things that I remember.. every line is a little too affected but not in the great Neil Young way. But that doesn't stop Neil or Jackson from beating up on their women. Well Neil does it rarely.

    • @oppothumbs1

triumphant performance. But in the sixties there were amazing singer songwriters, ok? Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Tim Buckley (Pheraps the greatest and the less celebrated) and many many others.

This is without a doubt Jackson Browne's masterpiece of all time...there's not even a close second. However, it didn't get the air time probably due to the length of the song, so it wasn't overplayed and not very well known to the general public. Definitely it's his signature song.

From the same album I'd say that Late For The Sky, Farther On, The Late Show, For a Dancer and After The Deluge are also worthy contenders. He's written and recorded many great songs, but as to which is the greatest of them all, I think that probably comes down, in the end, to personal taste. . .

Takes me back to the spring of '76; I was 21. It was a warm, sunny day (of which there were many in that scorching hot year) and my then girlfriend and I were walking from Kirkcudbright in Scotland out to the nearby Dhoon Bay to lie on the beach, when Micky Crossan and Donald Clint pulled up in their pickup truck and offered us a lift to Brighouse Bay, a few miles further on. We sat on the open back of the truck with the warm wind blowing through our hair and could hear this great music pouring out of the cab. Micky parked on the sand, with the doors wide open and Late For The Sky full up on the cassette player. He and Donald went off down to the water's edge with their spliffs and Eleanor and I lay on the beach and listened to that whole wonderful, life changing album. That was my unforgettable introduction to Jackson Browne. I saw him at the Apollo in Glasgow in December the same year, when he and the band put on a tremendous show. I had to walk about 8 miles through a blizzard afterwards but it was well worth it. 20 years later I was able to speak to him after a show in the RCH in Glasgow and reminded him of something he said during the 76 show ("I'm ignorant of the geography of this planet - which direction is the sea from here?" before he sang Rock Me on The Water) and he remembered the show and named the Apollo as the location. He's a compassionate, deeply thoughtful and insightful writer on matters of the heart, and I'd say that his words and music were very important to me, especially during the late 70s, when I would disappear off on my own, into the worlds of Farther On ("my dreams like nets were thrown"), The Late Show, Late For the Sky and For A Dancer , and that I regard his first 4 albums as amongst the best ever produced by anyone, particularly Late For The Sky, which I believe is his masterpiece and stands comparison with the very best by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Chapin, Tom Waits and David Bowie. Thank you for the music JB. A lifelong fan.

But its good to see you smiling face tonight? I am just a couple of years behind you so please forgive me. Just embarrassing lyrics from a women beater. Pretender or Late for the Sky are much better songs. Really only women like this one.
Do you think he tries to hard on this song?
I'm sorry for my cynicism. This song does nothing for me but i think Jackson is just looking to get laid in the most sensitive of ways. I guess if i liked the melody it would be better.

Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer,
I was taken by a photograph of you.
There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more,
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true.
You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise.
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you,
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes.
Now the things that I remember seem so distant and so small,
Though it hasn't really been that long a time.
What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all
Although for a while, our path did seem to climb.
When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger,
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool.
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
All the loneliness seems to spring from your life,
Like a fountain from a pool.
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light,
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're alright.
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight.
Now for you and me it may not be that hard to reach our dreams,
But that magic feeling never seems to last.
And while the future's there for anyone to change,
    Still you know it seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past.
I'm just one or two years, and a couple of changes behind you
In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school,
Where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you,
There's this loneliness springing up from your life
Like a fountain from a pool.
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light,
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're alright.
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight.
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light,
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to struggle, you've had to fight
To keep understanding and compassion in sight
You could be laughing at me, you've got the right.
But you go on smiling, so clear and so bright.

Don’t wait until you feel comfortable.
Don’t wait until you have it all figured out.
    Don’t wait until you retire.
Don’t wait until everything is perfect.
Don’t wait until you have the approval of others.
    Our time here is finite.
You don’t want to run out of time and be filled with “what if’s” and serious regrets.
This is your one precious life, spend time cultivating a friendship with yourself knowing who you are, what you want, and how you can live your life fully.
You are worthy. Your life today is THE something special.

This live version of Fountain of Sorrow is definitely his best song and the very best version - Mark Goldenberg's lead guitar frames it all together - listen to this version against Jackson's official album version and there's no comparison - the ending of that one- without a strong lead guitat- just dies- and he tries too hard on his vocals at the end of each lyrical phrase. This live version knocks it out of the park and SHOULD be his official verson.

Than she wrote a song blaming him for his wife 's suicide after the fake allegations were made by Darly Hannah that he beat her up which she later recanted after Joni did this to Jackson It single handedly ruined his reputation and his career.

Just wish this were more "orchestrated" and less "Wall of Sound." Jackson Browne deserved more constraint, less filler music behind him, musical choreography. A big mistake for an artist this historically GREAT. I began to emulate Jackson and learn his songs back in the mid-60s so he's a major influence and a true LOVE of my life: Just like Aretha Franklin!

I think her name is Jennifer Gross. She was singing on his records and tour around the time this was taped (2002) and I believe she was a redhead.

It was released in 1974. Pretty sure that was pre-Darryl. I'd read it was Joni MItchell as well. The I'm Alive album released in 1993 was the post-Hannah album.
