    Hey Matt, I'm an old dude, not quite as old as your Cat but close. Don't let the old iron problems wear you down. Despite what you may be thinking you are making a ton of progress and when you're done if anything breaks it's "eh I fixed that before". And is you have kids, your's or neighbors you will forever be their hero. You probably won't find that out for 40 years but sometime, out of the blue one of them will tell you that. You keep wrenching, I'll keep watching.

    You are going through what I would expect for a dozer that was found in the woods. A 70 year old machine that has sat for a while unused and UNMAINTAINED would tend to need a lot of maintenance and rebuild. This dozer looks a bit worse than some of the will it start machines found on TH-cam.

    I see you hitting your wrench’s with a hammer to get bolts loose. Another option if you don’t already know is putting the box end of another wrench over the open end of the first wrench to gain leverage

  • @Mercmad
    @Mercmad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Looking at the machine, it appears to have been worked on by pro's throught out it's life and not worked too hard. I'm used to seeing hardware store bolts, wrong spec hoses, broken studs ,brazed up castings etc etc .
    Your parts books is a great source of info on how things come apart. Note: the injection pump drive is off set so it should be timed easily on reassembly.

    Matt , leverage is your friend. You need a four /five foot section of pipe that will fit over your wrench or 3/4 inch breaker bar. My j.d. rebuild broke me physically , financially and emotionally. 😂😂 Good luck my friend , enjoy watching your videos.

    There is a technique that is less painful. It is still not officially allowed but a lot technicians use it. It is called "Double Wrenching" put the box end on the the open en of the first wrench to give you more purchase. Better than using a hammer. Love this video.

    Great channel thank you. I have the same make and model in South Dakota. Over last ten years I have had to replace pony engine with electric start which makes using it much easier. And last summer had to replace front main spring after it broke. I should have checked the pan when the engine was lifted as there is an oil leak now either from wear or a crack. Not a lot but a nuisance. Have looked at pulling pan and trying to fix but not sure how without warping pan. Getting parts for these is a challenge.

    I would clean, sandblast, and repaint everything. All new seals, gaskets, and anything not metal. You can make that thing look and run like new so why not? It's not like today's heavy machinery that will be useless in 70 years because computers, sensors, and other tech are impossible to find working. That's the great thing about purely mechanical equipment. Most every part you could need can be found or worst case fabricated.

    Rebuilding the hydraulic system on any tractor is of the most expensive parts of getting a tractor going. I used to buy five gallons of hydraulic oil for $15 but I understand it now costs over $15 a gallon. My tractor used to use three five gallon containers of hydraulic oil.replacing hydraulic oil can get expensive.
