@@ProAVTV It would be interesting to see the recording times when keeping the flip out lcd screen always on, for touching focus on a run-n-gun scenario. Stand-by mode already made the recording times extremely long.
The Raw signal sent to the V+ should bypass all of that pipeline, which is why it's undesirable to have it in the high-res (and heat generating) mode - that data only gets used for internal recording anyway.
Thanks for this! Is there a middle ground? Realistically, I want the best 4K signal I can get reliably. I don't have the backend for an 8K workflow. Is there a best internal 4K HQ or external 4k HQ equivalent option for this or a similar setup (w/o overheat). I'm assuming there's NOT a downscaled 4K Raw output option.
Theres the 5K raw crop which is sort of the middle ground. Plus that can be recorded up to 30p with the regular Ninja V I believe which is a nice bonus. You have always had significantly less overheating issues when recording the 4K HQ mode externally as normal Prores, especially when you use an external battery or mains power. This is the workflow we use for lots of the B-Roll on this channel. Carl
@@ProAVTV Can you record in 5k RAW up to 60p with EF-s lenses? And what would the actual crop on the lenses be in 5K RAW? For example, what would a 100mm lens become equivalent to? Cheers!
Thank you so much for the video! Have you tried recording with the LCD screen on? I think the is the big test for me (and prob others as well). I have the Ninja V and can record all day if the LCD screen is not on. However, if it's on, I only get around 40 mins or so before overheating warnings. The thing is, I need the screen most of the time for focus, etc. I was excited at first to watch your video, but then noticed the LCD screen was off during most of the time test. I would love to know how long it will go with the screen on. Thank you again !!
It is indeed the LCD causing the heat issues. You can run the recording until the battery dies with the LCD off. With it on you will stop around 44 minutes.
I have a question! 5k video is recorded in crop mode? I am interested in the review of only 5k 50p raw, I really want to see examples and discuss the recording possibilities! in your video, I saw that you need to switch to crop mode for recording 5k and I'm worried about this. thank you for your experience!
Yes, you can’t downsample a raw signal. So the raw is 8k with the full sensor. But you can crop in to 5k work of pixels to get a higher frame rate. Carl
@@ProAVTV Can you test the crop mode with Canon SpeedBooster on (the one for the C70) and an EF lens? See if you have any issues with 5K 50p and 60p. And if you get vignetting or not. I believe everything could work fine. It would be useful! Thanks!
If I set the stand by mode to ON, and output Raw, it doesnt affect the signal output? If instead of RAW im on 4K HQ with the stand by mode ON, the output signal is the 4K HQ?
I assume you mean “Sonys colour” in a negative way? To defend Sony a little quickly, the colours from the A7S3, fx3, FX6, fx9 & Venice are all beautiful. Hi Chuy, i have the same problem with the most of my thinner HDMI-Cables. You should test another cable, i think. The Atomos 4K HDMI 2.0a HDR Ready Cable worked fine until a pin in the plug broke...
I primarily shoot in 4K 60. I'm very curious to know if the R5 overheats using these settings for external recording. Here in northern California, my R5 overheats quickly. This summer has been mostly between 95 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit so you can imagine my struggles. Great video! Thank you for posting it so quickly too :)
The R5 doesn't really overheat in any modes when recording externally provided the cameras screen and EVF are set to turn off. I've filmed many weddings now in 4k50 externally with zero issues.
@@SeanColey No worries. I get that, I'm in the same boat as I go handheld/gimbal solo all the time. Do you rely on AF? What I do is let the AF do its thing and I monitor focus on the atomos, and if I need to adjust, I just wake the screen and adjust.

Thanks for that good review! I also have the R5 and the Ninja V+. Both have the latest firmware. The 8R RAW recording is working great - as you described. But I want to choose 8K ProRes HQ or LT - NOT the RAW-Format. It seems that this is not possible - everytime I choosed another recording codec than RAW a message comes up like "the incomming signal is RAW - the recording format must also be RAW". Can you reproduce this? Are you able to record 8K ProRes LT or others? I can't.... If you can - what settings have to be changed (if I disable the RAW output in R5 I can not record on the V+...) Thanks for your feedback!!
There is no way to record 8K prores (or dnx) because both the camera and the recorder cannot support such high bandwidth YCC4:2:2 or 4:4:4 signals through their HDMI 2.0 port. Prores or DNX codec is handling YCC signal. ProresRAW compresses RAW (Bayer) data. Bayern data consumes less bandwidth compared to YCC one. This is why 8K prores raw external encoding is possible but not prores.
greetings, I’m wondering what are the options for dnx codec with the ninja v+ and r5 since I use resolve. specifically what modes can it record the dnx codec in?
Any noise reduction plug-in normally works quite well on raw footage. There’s the built in noise reduction in fcpx or resolve or plugins like neat video Carl
Thanks for the content! I know this pertains to the R5 but I'm currently using the R5C with the Ninja V and I can only get 13 minutes (4K) of record time from the Ninja until it shuts down after overheating. Will the Ninja V+ solve this issue since it can handle a high resolution input?
Ok, so now that prices on V+ are lower, should I buy the Canon R5c or the Canon R5 with this Atomos V+? I own the R6 and it is very annoying the overheating issue, especially when I am recording interviews. Will the Atomos Ninja V+ work with the R6 as well? Thanks!
No because that’s the minimum ISO value for log recording. Yes, raw footage is always more noisy as all other types of video have some level of noise reduction when being recorded. It should clean up nicely in post production with no negative impacts on the footage. Carl
waiting for Black magic external recorder to support 8k raw.. for their BRAW format.. No use for me personally with the ProRes RAW because I don't us MAC or FCP.. and it's not supported in Resolve and Not easy to work with it in premiere pro either :(

I see no reason to switch to this V+ , since, I found that the 8K wasn't that big of an improvement over de 4K HQ (besides my computer not being able to even play 8K video, let alone edit them without proxies which takes loads of time... so for me, not worthit)
Thank you for the video. I have got one question: does the Ninja V plus record 4k video in 120 fps from the R5 in better quality WITHOUT any line skipping than when recorded internally?
Canon R5 isn't any ability to output 4K 120 fps even with line skipping! aftermore there are not any 12bit RAW output through HDMI by canon in end result !
Hey guys, I need your help. This is kind of a big deal to me because I am really trying to streamline my workflow for video production. So here it goes. I recently picked up the new Atomos V+ for my Canon R5. I have had the R5 for about a year and love it. I have not been using it to its full potential because cRAW is difficult to edit and requires a lot of time and processing power to transcode it to prores. I really love using LumaFusion on my M1 iPad Pro and now I am able to scrub through 8k All-i footage without proxies. So then I wanted to record 8k raw to have the best quality out of the camera. Prior to buying the Atomos I would have to transfer the CRM files to my gaming laptop with a RTX 3070 then I would have to convert each clip in Premiere Pro to Prores 422 which would take a while. I would then have to copy those back to my iPad Pro and edit them in LumaFusion. Now, I know you are going to ask me why I don’t edit on the laptop, but I am much faster and much more comfortable using my ipad to edit video. I enjoy the ergonomics so much. So I bought the Atomos V+ so I can output 8k raw to it and record 8k prores HQ right into the Atomos. I would then slide out the 1TB ssd and connect it to my iPad Pro and LumaFusion can playback the file without issue. NOW HERE IS MY PROBLEM. “COLORSPACE”. No matter what option I have tried in LumaFusion, the colorspace is way off and not usable. If I playback the footage in LumaFusion before I drop the clip into my timeline, it looks fine. As soon as I put it in the timeline, colorspace becomes an issue. The closest one that is somewhat recognizable is Wide Gamut HDR - HDR10 (PQ). All others look like static or noise. Can someone please help? I really do not know what to do. There is no better software than LumaFusion for video editing on the iPad and this is the entire reason I bought the Atomos otherwise I would have just stuck with the Canon internal 8k raw recording, but then I would have to lug a laptop around to transcode the canon files to apple prores then copy back to my ipad. Sorry for the long comment. Please help if you can, thank you.
Great video but I must state that by using a battery grip you may have bypassed the internal battery's heat contribution to the in camera o.h. issue. Most people would want to use the internal battery for run and gun work. Being that it's a mirrorless camera the convenience of it's smaller form factor is one of it's most attractive attributes. The external recorder does add size to the setup so using the internal would be most convenient. That being said I so appreciate your very detailed review. Stellar as always.
R5 matches up with cinema cameras in terms of Image quality? Does dynamic range and highlight roll-off count as ‘Image Quality’? Especially so, when you’re comparing to cinema cameras. 3+ year old Fuji xt3 has better DR and roll-off than R5. Why do we act like only Sharpness counts as ‘Image Quality’?
It did not heat up because your video length was very short. Shoot beyond 1 hr length and see, it will surely give serious heat. A notorious camera for heat. If not, people will not design and manufacture special fan for this camera, which I have never seen for any other camera.
Can we just take a moment to gasp at the sheer amount of storage this takes up? Sweet Mercy, you would need a 2 TB SSD to do this properly. 8K video will necessitate whole new data centers being built.

@@ProAVTV It would be interesting to see the recording times when keeping the flip out lcd screen always on, for touching focus on a run-n-gun scenario. Stand-by mode already made the recording times extremely long.
Really nice review Pro Av ! But please tell me which hdmi Cable you use ?
Great vid mate. Do you know if enabling standby: low res mode only affects the cameras screen, or does it also send the low res signal down the hdmi?
The Raw signal sent to the V+ should bypass all of that pipeline, which is why it's undesirable to have it in the high-res (and heat generating) mode - that data only gets used for internal recording anyway.
@@JamesChurchill thanks mate!
That’s exactly right. You can’t throttle the data rate on a raw signal.
Carl
Carl
@@ProAVTV Thanks!
@@ProAVTV Can you record in 5k RAW up to 60p with EF-s lenses? And what would the actual crop on the lenses be in 5K RAW? For example, what would a 100mm lens become equivalent to? Cheers!
Do i need insert a CF Express card to EOS R5 while recording with Ninja V?Thanks for your reply
Do you need an 8K capable cable to connect the R5 to the ninja v+ in order to record 8K raw?
Works with HDMI 2.0
the weather is nice
Not bad for the UK!
Carl
Will this solution work on the R6 as well?
What hdmi cable are you using? Can’t find one that works
I just received my Ninja V+ for my R5 but none of my micro HDMI cables seem to send the raw video - do you recommend a specific cable?
Does it have external power connector?
What was the HDMI cable you used with the 8k recording?
Thank you so much for the video! Have you tried recording with the LCD screen on? I think the is the big test for me (and prob others as well). I have the Ninja V and can record all day if the LCD screen is not on. However, if it's on, I only get around 40 mins or so before overheating warnings. The thing is, I need the screen most of the time for focus, etc. I was excited at first to watch your video, but then noticed the LCD screen was off during most of the time test. I would love to know how long it will go with the screen on. Thank you again !!
It’s a good question! We can maybe test that
Carl
Thanks!
@@ProAVTV Thanks! This is very important to me!
Great video bro
Thanks for watching!
Carl
If I set the stand by mode to ON, and output Raw, it doesnt affect the signal output? If instead of RAW im on 4K HQ with the stand by mode ON, the output signal is the 4K HQ?
How easy was it to edit the the 8K Raw?
Do all ProRes Raw clips look like Sony's colour ?
I assume you mean “Sonys colour” in a negative way? To defend Sony a little quickly, the colours from the A7S3, fx3, FX6, fx9 & Venice are all beautiful.
As for this video, to be honest I’m not happy with the way the ProRes raw files are colour graded here. I did it very quickly late on a Friday evening as I wanted to get this video out for people to watch. I’m also not hugely familiar with FCPX. (Normally use resolve)
With more time, care and skill, I’m sure they would look much better.
Carl
I understand.
How about a1 colour ?
Can this record Raw 4k 120p with sound or Clog 4k 120p with sound. I don't like that they cannot record sound in the R5 body I have. I would love to buy this if this can help record sound without slow motion. Then we can slow mo later. Thank you
What’s the mount you’re using on top of the R5 to the Ninja?
Hi, my Ninja detects a raw signal but I don't get a visible signal once I click ok. Am I missing a setting?
Hi Chuy, i have the same problem with the most of my thinner HDMI-Cables. You should test another cable, i think. The Atomos 4K HDMI 2.0a HDR Ready Cable worked fine until a pin in the plug broke...
Can this combination do 4K 120p as well ?
No.
@@SeasonAscent That's good to know! Thank you. I need the screen to focus as I'm a solo gimbal operator but if I ever tripod it, that will be super helpful. I appreciate it!
@@SeasonAscent Oh I didn't think about that. That's great! I usually use eye-detection at weddings and with a lot of eyes... I constantly am tapping the screen to make sure it's on the right person juuuust in case. For details I generally use a spot focus and turn off af if needed.
@@Luke-mf5rq Thanks for that information!!
Can you capture RAW video internally on the r5, then capture playback on the Atomos to effectively convert it to ProRes raw?
greetings, I’m wondering what are the options for dnx codec with the ninja v+ and r5 since I use resolve. specifically what modes can it record the dnx codec in?
how do you clean up the noise so easy? I still cant figure it out
There are some mind blowing plug-ins for this.
Any noise reduction plug-in normally works quite well on raw footage. There’s the built in noise reduction in fcpx or resolve or plugins like neat video
Carl
Is the HDMI cable a limiting factor? I can't get 8k RAW to pick up on my V+.
Thanks for the content! I know this pertains to the R5 but I'm currently using the R5C with the Ninja V and I can only get 13 minutes (4K) of record time from the Ninja until it shuts down after overheating. Will the Ninja V+ solve this issue since it can handle a high resolution input?
Where can you get an HDMI cable for the R5/Ninja V+ with a right angle to record 8K?
And with the snap of a finger, sales for both items took a welcome jump.
Well we will see. They do make a very powerful combination
Carl
Ok, so now that prices on V+ are lower, should I buy the Canon R5c or the Canon R5 with this Atomos V+? I own the R6 and it is very annoying the overheating issue, especially when I am recording interviews. Will the Atomos Ninja V+ work with the R6 as well? Thanks!
It works with everything hdmi
I have also done some testing with ninja plus. Are you able to get any lower than 800 iso? I found the footage to be a bit more grainy than I like.
No use for me personally with the ProRes RAW because I don't us MAC or FCP.. and it's not supported in Resolve and Not easy to work with it in premiere pro either :(
I would love that, simply so that we can grade in resolve. As it’s so much better for colour than fcp

Rolling shutter with ninja?

maybe one day they discover the fan and implement active cooling on the R5. Very interesting video
I would love to see a more video oriented version of the R5 with a fan and exhaust like on the S1H. But I don’t think Canon will ever do that. They wouldn’t have included it on this as it would make the camera more bulky and less weather sealed for photographers.

Can you record the 4kHQ with the normal Ninja V?
Yes as regular prores 422

Pro Res Raw vs internal Raw not the same thing. Same name, different things.
Can you try Ninja V+ with FX9 HFR 120fps
it would be craziest shot of youtube
Great video. This must be why Atomos just sent a $500 voucher to Shogun and Ninja owners to upgrade to the 8k Ninja V+.
Is this for real? I haven't seen such a vouncher yet.
The voucher is on their support site once you register one of the eligible products. The Ninja V is NOT one of them. These are the ones listed… Shotuun Flame, Shogun Inferno, Shogun 7, Ninja Inferno or Ninja Assasin. Valid until September 30th.
Can still overheat or shutdown indoors with a Ninja....
I see no reason to switch to this V+ , since, I found that the 8K wasn't that big of an improvement over de 4K HQ (besides my computer not being able to even play 8K video, let alone edit them without proxies which takes loads of time... so for me, not worthit)
That’s fair enough, it’s only really worth it if this 8k raw is of interest to you
Carl
Thank you for the video. I have got one question: does the Ninja V plus record 4k video in 120 fps from the R5 in better quality WITHOUT any line skipping than when recorded internally?
Canon R5 isn't any ability to output 4K 120 fps even with line skipping! aftermore there are not any 12bit RAW output through HDMI by canon in end result !
“Additionally, the R5 supports 5Kp60 ProRes RAW with Ninja V+ to provide even more creative latitude”
I am interested about the 5k raw 50p quality……
We didn’t try it much. But there are quite a few 5k 24p shots in here. I’d expect the 5K 50p to look very similar

Why his face looks so green??
Great video but I must state that by using a battery grip you may have bypassed the internal battery's heat contribution to the in camera o.h. issue. Most people would want to use the internal battery for run and gun work. Being that it's a mirrorless camera the convenience of it's smaller form factor is one of it's most attractive attributes. The external recorder does add size to the setup so using the internal would be most convenient.
That being said I so appreciate your very detailed review. Stellar as always.
It was actually tested by a separate reviewer. There is only a 9 minute diference at room temperature
What camera was the outside footage shot on? It looks horrible! Green skin and weird colours! #eww
It was the R6 but it wasn’t the cameras fault. Over exposed piece to cameras and a quickly done colour grade are to blame.
Carl
it's too much bandwidth
id rather have 10x compression that you can't notice and record at that speed in raw
