    Very helpful. I shot with my R5 yesterday and was confounded trying to get into 4K 120p (turns out I just had to "enable" high frame rate)... being confounded doesn't go over well when you're running a set. I'm definitely going to use those custom presets. On a good note, the 4K HQ is incredible. I did notice that it is H.264 though and not H.265 and it played fine on my MacBook 16". I recall several vids saying it was H.265 4:2:2 and difficult to play back, so that had me a little confused. But it looked great.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Awesome! So the camera automatically shifts to h.265 422 10bit ONLY when using Slog. I touched on the fact that 10bit is only when shooting log at the end of this video but didn't mention that it also automatically shifts it from h.264 to h.265

      The camera also records 10-bit h.265 if you enable PQ mode, though you only really get about 9.5 bits used. The camera only outputs up to level 640 instead of going all the way up to 1024, for some reason. But CLog3 is better anyway.

    This video is a proper "User's Manual for Videography" that Canon should've made at launch. A way to take the maximum out of your equipment for the longest duration. I think this video can help people using the R5 for video to at least make it to lunch, before they let the camera rest for 30-60 mins - and then finish the day off with minimal interruptions.

    Awesome video, thanks Dan! A few tips I've learned--- there is a way to dual record video while doing 8K. You can set the camera to record a 4K MP4 to the SD card slot at the same time-- essentially a proxy-- great for editing and the quality is surprisingly good. Also, Canon offers Picture Style Editor on their website for free. It lets you alter the in-camera profiles like 'Standard' and improve the dynamic range. I was able to lift the shadows with a S-Curve edit which recovered a surprising amount of detail. Nice for quick, no-grading, out-of-camera results. I was curious about your 8K RAW + Clog comment. You got better dynamic range than just RAW alone? I thought RAW was the highest setting and Clog was derived from it. Sounds like Clog adds another couple of stops on top of RAW?

    • @finnillson4808
      @finnillson4808 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When shoot in RAW you have a choice to interpret it as Clog, Clog 2, or Clog 3. The choice is yours. Clog 2 offers the most dynamic range from shadows to highlights. The Dynamic range in RAW is very respectable for a mirrorless camera from Canon. I would say overall, dynamic range in clog is the big problem with this camera, around 11.7 stops. The 14-bit RAW photos are amazing and have a huge amount of latitude, especially in the shadows when you underexpose and then bring up in post: easily 2-3 stops recoverable from shadows. Video is the other way around in 8K RAW. Really hoping that add Clog3 or Clog2 in a firmware update to keep it competitve against sony and Panasonic.

      This sounds like a good video lol. I love the new RF 35mm F1.8 IS because stabilization is killer when combined with IBIS, the R5 actually works great in APSC mode so basically it's a 35 and a 50, and it's cheap as hell with great quality: bhpho.to/2Isswuh
      Otherwise I use a 24-70 F2.8 (24-105 F4 would be the cheap option) and the 35 F1.8 for most getting ready & receptions, the 70-200 if I need a long reach for ceremonies (but a 24-105 in APSC mode works alright), and occasionally a wide angle for venue shots and a few fun action dance shots at the reception!

    Thanks for the review. One remark that I would like to make, lenses will work differently with each camera. My EF 17 mm TS-E worked great with my 5D MK II, was a tick off with my 5D MK III and would be great again with the 5D MK IV. As far as I know it has to do with micro-differences in regard to the distance from glass level to the sensor. So even with the same lens on two cameras you may get different results.

    • @learningcameras

      So I was saying it's better to use full frame LQ in low light instead of the crop mode if you need modes that don't overheat. Absolutely use the HQ version whenever possible for the best quality but it will overheat pretty fast. However at low iso, 4k crop is better quality than 4k LQ and neither overheat

    So helpful Dan. I think this video has convinced me to move from MFT to FF with the R5. I shoot a lot of video and was very concerned with the timers. I take it the 4K crop mode does not overheat? I was amazed that the crop mode oversampled and looked so much better. I know its compromises we don’t like but with this setup I think I could shoot almost anything with just a bit more fiddling with recording modes and perhaps always making sure I have a wider angle lens in my bag to soak up the 1.5 crop.

    Hi Dan, I wanted to ask you for information and share a problem I'm having with my R5. I state that I have already heard canon assistance. I was wondering if by chance you had also encountered this problem on your R5 and if you have found a solution to avoid it. Practically when I film in CLOG and especially in CLOG 3, horizontal stripes appear as image noise in the dark parts of my shots. First of all I went to see the instruction manual and it says that this can occur in particular conditions and advises to take test shots and possibly change the lighting conditions inside my location. Obviously this is not always possible. This is definitely frustrating. Below you will find what the manual says under the heading "Canon Log Image Quality". If this has happened to you before, do you have any advice for me? I would be grateful.
    (Canon Log Image Quality
    With Canon Log, movies may be affected by horizontal banding, depending on the subject or shooting conditions. Record a few test movies and check the results in advance. In particular, noise may become more noticeable if you enhance the contrast when color-grading your movies.
    With Canon Log, skies, white walls, and similar subjects may be affected by noise or uneven gradation, exposure, or colors.
    Horizontal banding is more likely to occur when recording somewhat dark, flat subjects. This image noise may even occur at relatively low ISO speeds around ISO 400 for Canon Log or ISO 800 for Canon Log 3.
    If noise is noticeable, try recording under brighter conditions and adjusting brightness in color grading. Noise can also be reduced by recording at ISO speeds lower than ISO 400 for Canon Log or ISO 800 for Canon Log 3, although dynamic range is narrower.)

      Dan Watson thank you, extremely helpful info. I think a lot of people demand too much, the R5 is like having a 45mpx really good stills camera with a c200 that reliably records over sampled 4K with dpaf and ibis.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t understand the crop mode vs HQ 4K, could you explain this a bit more? Are you talking about the movie cropping mode enable? If so, doesn’t the cropping mode in 4K disable the HQ mode?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the HQ mode just gives you "oversampled" video and the only reason they have it in the full frame mode is that there is also a "non oversampled" mode. In APSC everything is oversampled so basically it's ONLY HQ. The downside is there is a 1.5x crop so technically not full frame but it doesn't overheat and is oversampled where as the HQ mode in full frame overheats quickly

    • @learningcameras

      Yeah, the RS3 is pretty compact for a gimbal so you don't have a ton of room to adjust the camera even though the gimbal can technically handle the weight. The only thing you really can do is counterbalance it so look to add some weight to the hotshoe or add a cage to see if you can add more weight to the back of the camera. Otherwise the RS3 Pro will handle that offset better

    How do you enable 10-bit? That's the real thing that's been driving me _INSANE_
    Especially at 4K 120p. It's not clear at all what enables 10-bit for any of the shooting modes/framerates.
    edit: 13:35, is this **confirmed** by Canon as the ONLY WAY to enable 10-bit? I thought the 4K HQ mode also did this, just not in 120p?

    • @learningcameras

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The highest quality video mode that doesn't overheat is 4k24 with an APSC crop. This mode looks great and doesn't overheat. If you are above 1600 ISO though, go with the full frame 4k24 in LQ to not overheat which even though it has less detail than the crop mode, it also has less grain.

      You have to shoot C-Log or HLG to force the camera in 10bit 422. There is no other way. You can however shoot both All-I or IPB I believe to get 10bit...the only thing that changes is the bitrate but even Canon's IPB bitrate is high. In 4k120, you can ONLY shoot ALL-I

    • @learningcameras

      Not really. The problem with 4k120 is not just how long you can record but the fact that once the camera has been on or recorded for even 30 minutes (or just left on with a hot day), the camera will completely lock you out of 4k120 so there is a LOT they would have to do

    Hi Dan,
    Thanks for the tips and being positive about the workarounds on the R5 limitations.
    For long form, are you using an external recorder like the Ninja 5?
    And can you share your recommended workflow for processing the different shooting modes as I’ve seen 8k30 and H.265 codecs are taxing to process? What software do you use and what laptop/computer configuration do you recommend?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! So I don't use an external recorder just because when I do need to shoot 4k120 or 8k, the recorder doesn't work. Also, the oversampled 4k HQ doesn't work when recording externally. Yes, 8k is extremely difficult and I'm using a fairly underpowered 2019 version i7 processor and 2080gpu. Unfortunately most of the newest processors don't support h.265 with 10bit 422 although you can play back h.265 420 no problem. There isn't much you can do at this point if you want to shoot 422 h.265 without proxies from my understanding....at least with Premiere

    • @RockyColaFizz
      @RockyColaFizz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. You can record in 4K HQ to an external recorder. However, you must have Overheat Control Mode set to Off. If you have it set to On, you will get 4K std to the external recorder. The TH-cam channel No Life showed and proved this. I have tested this on my R5 and Atomos Ninja 5, and can confirm that it does record in HQ mode if Overheat Control is off.

  • @fforehand
    @fforehand 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't want to do anything to damage the camera, but I think I heard you can cool the camera down fairly quickly by sticking in a an ice chest between shots. Has anyone tried this? Good idea? Bad idea? Maybe not a freezing ice chest, just something around 40 degrees.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it really is WAY less effective than you would think. This camera is very timer based so even using it in freezing weather you still can't record much more than in the heat. When it first came out, putting it in the freezer did pretty much nothing although some firmware upgrades have improved things a bit

    Biggest problem with Canon that it uses outdated, not BSI-CMOS sensors and has low sensitivity due to ridiculous megapixel counts or if they use later sensor they are huge like R3 or R1. I like more Sony A7sIII. By now they should have been experimenting with SPAD or x1000 more sensitive graphene sensors to shring camera size, weight and cost.
