Besides the additional pre-burst capture options, I want Canon to finally enable high-frame-rate video from the main video menu. Diving into the menu to turn high frame rates on and off is, frankly, lame. It would also be good if I could program a button for max burst speed. I mainly shoot birds at 20 FPS but I'd like to set my R5 II to 30 FPS for at least occasionally.
I’d like to see Sony give us a firmware update that permitted open gate video recording (record from the whole 3:2 sensor, not limit us to 16:9), AND off 1.3, 1.5, 1.8 & 2x desqueeze in camera for those using anamorphic lenses so they see what their final footage will be like on the LCD & in the EVF.
@ or a marketing decision….. It can cope with 4k/120 4:2:2 10bit, so, if they offered open gate but there was a temp issue, they could limit it to 24/30 fps &/or 4:2:0 or something like that to keep the data rate, and therefore temps manageable.
@@TheLDunn1 lumix and fugi offer open gate recording. In a hybrid camera. I'm looking at the Lumix S5iix personally. If you want a handheld videocentric camera with a full frame sensor then Blackmagic are probably the best place to look. They have a 6k camera. If I would be Sony the next FX line of cameras would be opengate. Same with the next R6 for Canon and what ever Nikon is doing. Right now I think it's a lack of cooling or processing methods in the sensor.
Do we think Sony’s current hardware won’t allow open gate recording? If that’s not the case, Seems like that would be the thing needed in a big firmware update.
@ wouldn't be that hard but the update culture for one reason or another isn't great. They probably have their reasons. Still would've loved to see animal eye af for video in the A1.sad
I'm sorry, Jared, those are NOT Canadian Geese. They are Canada Geese. I don't know why it's the case, but the actual name is Canada Goose, rather than Canadian. It's a pedantic, but mildly (very, VERY mildly) interesting fact.
I think they hid a pez dispenser inside the R1 and R5 mk ii and the firmware will unlock the use to use them so you can have something sweet to eat while you are out taking photos :D
A custom button for pre-capture is a necessity and so short sighted of them not to include it from the start. Would also like to see action priority for wildlife.
Outsourcing doesn't always reduce quality. Those pure-play foundries and factories specialize in manufacturing, simultaneously increasing yield and decreasing cost. AMD used to make its own chips, but since outsourcing to tsmc, the performance of its products has sky-rocketed. Their latest Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which uses an older N4 technology is much better than Intel's processors, and way more reliable because their chips don't suffer from electromigration like Intel's 13th and 14th generation chips. The overall question is which pure-play the products are out-sourced to.
R1 is missing panning assist sensor wobble feature. Birds in flight have a horizontal motion that can be pretty well matched by the goon swinging the camera, but the vertical motions caused by wing beats not so much. The R3 panning assist slows frame rate, but can increase keepers in some low light slow shutter speed instances.
You could save pre-capture activated on C1 and save the exact same settings but without pc on C2. Just as a workaround until Canon gives us the option to just put it on a button.
Yeah.... I updated the night they released it because they dangled that focus stacking in front of me! I've only been asking for it for five years now! Hahahaha literally the one feature all of their other newer cameras had that I was bummed to always had to still manually do.
It's strange for camera companies to call themselves fabless. Companies like nVidia, AMD, and Qualcomm are fabless because they don't have a semiconductor fabrication foundry, and their chips are fabricated here in Taiwan at tsmc. On the other hand, Intel is an IDM (integrated device manufacturer) which produces its own chips.
For Canon, perhaps we might see new sports in action priority modes modes besides soccer (aka football), basketball, and volleyball. Or even other activities altogether. Or eye tracking improvements since the vibe out there seems to be more gimmick than useful.
People keep asking for a pre capture toggle button. I agree this could be handy and Canon should absolutely provide it, but I don't think it's as necessary as I used to think when I first got my R52s. If you use back button autofocus, a pre capture button is not really necessary. I keep it on all the time add only hold down the shutter button when I want pre capture to activate. Also, it turns off whenever the camera is switched to single-shot mode.
I'm glad that Sony is supporting their flagships, but they really do need to support their consumer grade stuff more. HERE'S A NOVEL IDEA: every camera gets a midlife update after ~5 years. Even if it's a small one, it would show that Sony cares about their everyday customers.
No they are not. They refuse to port “Animal/Bird 👁️ AF in Video” to the flagship, while at the same time giving that firmware to the older chipset in a7C
Wonder about the older a6000 series bodies, or the earlier a7 series models. Sony should at the very least be able to put out some form of a "final update" that unlocks whatever the camera got, since the new models are supposed to trounce on them in some way...

Do these updates confirm what people have been saying about the a1ii just being an updated a1 if the a1 now has the same software on most features now??
sony updates stopped being actual updates since the a99ii got discontinued. FW updates for mirrorless cameras by Sony introduce a couple of unimportant features and promises of better performance while introducing more bugs and conflicts with third party lenses. Before, on Alpha bodies, firmware updates would say something like "increased voltage output on SSM driven lenses" which would lead to higher autofocus torque with the G series of lenses; or "IBIS fine tuning with focal length adaption" to keep the same amount of stops of ibis across a zoom range, or "diaphragm lever actuation dampening from stepped to continuous" so that the diaphragm lever on the mount does not clack open before closing again everytime you go from a narrow F to a bright F. And none of these firmware updates actually caused any conflict with third party accessories.
Why is it called "SONY Updates 3 MAJOR Cameras" when 2/3 of the recording time is related to Canon and other things and not to Sony ? Stupid clickbait to draw attention of Sony users...
@@PaulMcElligott I'm not new here and I understand what you mean but still for me it's kind of clickbait to name material this way. If I named my recording eg "Fresh news ! @ If the content before that last minute was still interesting and you eventually delivered on the headline, I wouldn’t complain because I know how TH-cam works. You act like Jared is the only one doing this, and like it’s some kind of moral affront to talk about multiple subjects in the same video. Also, Jared’s news video are never that long, so your blatant exaggeration of “half hour” is getting dangerously close to a straw man argument.
Jared can't you set custome function mode with and without the pre-shooting? It won't be a single button enable/disable but rather a single turn of the mode dial. What do you think?
@froknowsphoto agree. In general, Canon lacks customization options for dials and buttons. For example, I would love to be able to set the ISO settings to the top "index finger" dial for when I'm shooting concerts in full manual with fixed aperture and speed and only riding the ISO. It would be much faster and ergonomically comfortable than the thumb dials.
Can you make a video on ergonomics? Seriously tho, everyone is checking spec sheets and EVs and other Dynamic Range or ISO stuff, while in reality it will not have as much impact as you think. If the A7v does not share the same body with the A9 III or A1 II, which it won't, I'll be legit getting an R6 II or a Z8, Sony has terrible ergonomics, the bodies are tiny its not easy to grip them.
