It sounds to me like the "class" system is more closely aligned to what they have in Destiny 2, a core "class" that specializes in a certain style of gameplay, where you can swap between 3 or 4 different options for 3 or 4 different abilities or modules. Not super excited about that, but we have very little to go on. Pretty excited for that alpha/beta testing next year :D
As a long time Warframe player, I'm down for "heroes" with their own personalities/aesthetics so long as that element of customization is still there, and it sounds like it will in some form. I think I'm more interested in seeing what combat with the pfhor will look like, how mob dense environments will be, etc. Will this be more akin to Dark & Darker or Dungeonborne where fighting non player enemies is a larger focus than Tarkov? Are there going to be "bosses" to hunt down? Will killing other players be slightly discouraged like Division's rogue operative system, or is this going to be more competitive and cutthroat like Hunt. If I'm playing UESC are other UESC players considered "friendly"? Lots of questions I'd love Bungie to answer that I'd argue impact the game more than picking heroes over classes.
People keep saying that it sounds like a "class" system. But the way he talked about "Thief" sounds more like a hero or operator to me. And if they were just classes that we got to make look how we wanted with no per-determined personality or face or gender than that's cool. Exactly what I wanted, and honestly what they initially promised in the original Vidoc. But if its a character that we get limited customization on where everyone who plays thief is just some variation of that concept art? Then that sucks, and honestly its the latter that it sounds like he's describing to me.
I’m super interested in marathon now but I’m personally worried it’s going to have typical online game lore which is pitiful normally. I really hope it has a narrative that’s front and center even if it’s online game first and foremost.
It sounds like they're utilising something like a class system like in Destiny but not a full 'hero shooter' structure, given that you can acquire gear and equipment to modify gameplay and stats which presumably would change your appearence too. But cant say much more than that, nor can we know how a class based system would work in an extraction shooter, if its somehow inherently a negative idea or no. I cant see how it would be though. But classes have been hinted at since the very first release materials, and customisation has also been listed as a priority too and these two features are not mutually exclusive.
I'd like to add to my comment after I realised a potential reason for why the 'hero shooter' terminology first took off, and as to why Bungie aren't discounting it, instead saying the game would be a 'little bit of both' between customisable characters and hero. It still is probably more in line with a class like system as I mentioned, but for moment to moment gameplay reasons its possible they're using elements of hero shooter design to ensure quick identification of player classes to inform gameplay decisions. This will likely take the form of specific motifs: body shape and silhouette, effects, equipable gear types etc. Whether such clone models require a full faced helmet for oxygen or not has already been pointed out as such a motif they are likely using, connected previously to the 4th, prototypical, clone type mentioned in the Sekiguchi correspondences in the ARG. This pulling from hero shooter-esque design ethos would also allow them to bring out more classes to fulfill more roles in a gameplay sense in future. Typical class based games can be sort of restrictive in how much they allow for experimentation and implementation of ability types, locking new designs more into subclasses adhering to strict class formulae on how abilities can function, a restriction hero shooters have managed to break free from a little bit. For the closest examples I can think of, see Warframe. Warframe has never really been described as a hero shooter, in fact it came before the craze and instead pioneered the looter shooter genre the Bungie were also delving into only a year later. It's characters or 'heroes', the titular warframes, do feature what would become the hero shooter formula, with some extreme flexibility of designing vastly different ability types and functions and the visual distinctions between the frames to facilitate quick recognition, but also a high level of visual customisation supported beyond the traditional hero shooter 'skins'. This is probably more akin to what they're doing with Marathon, and given the other thematic similarities, the player being an 'operator' that links or 'transfers' to another body, a clone or frame, in order to access superhuman ability and be safe from death, its easy to see how this model could be a great one to pull inspiration from when designing Marathon's clones. Mix features of hero shooter character distinctions, with Destiny's traditional class based armour approach, and you give yourself levels of freedom in many different design elementtypes now and into the future whilst still retaining customisation options for players to personalise their visual style, if done right.
Ugh, TH-cam feels so hard to right comments for... I should try another approach to be more readable, but yeah, that's my take from the information we have available.
For why they arent being very specific or indepth about a lot of topics or even showing off any examples of gameplay, its been a thing Bungie have been doing for a long time now... Not really sure why, whether it comes from fears about dev harassment theyve dealt with in the past, or if its some bizarre management idea on how marketing should actually work... but its not at all unusual that theyre being coy, Destiny 2 seasons were often kept extremely obscure until launch day and it can be really frustrating when you want to be excited.
The generic and I’d even say evasive explanation for character customization was really disappointing for me. I get “hero-esque” design is easier to maintain. But they had a golden opportunity to have some cyberpunk like play with gear enhancements that I think would have be well received
If the idea is ‘tons of loot and gear’ to find, I’m hoping it’s a lot like you say and the runners are more like chassis that excel in certain areas. Having a decent selection of Inter-class items and gear would take more time to balance, but I think it would really scratch the itch for customization people initially pictured.
I was pretty disappointed by this "update" that did little to update the community. Also Bungie if you are reading this you can hire me and I won't let you release a video where the game director says, "Marathon - this game is not for everybody". I can't believe that made it past the cut room. The hero shooter stuff is about what we expected I think which goes against their ViDoc which focused on the customizable runners you could make. 6/10 update.
I had no idea about this. 😐 there is Marathon news what? 😐I can’t believe I totally didn’t see this at exactly 12:50 PM on a Monday. 😐 Fork expert reacts moment🍴there is a knife there too.
This entire video just felt like a confirmation of everything we've been afraid of. There was such a reluctancy from Ziegler to say anything that could relate the game back to a "hero shooter" that it left him with nothing else to give us other than information we already knew + two concept art pieces (which look insane don't get me wrong). I REALLY hope that the customization he mentioned was not referring to simple paid cosmetic reskins and colorways, but modular parts of the Biomada like headpieces chest rigs etc. that effect gameplay. It would be such a disappointment to be running into 5 different "stealth" players in-game that all look identical wit the same go-invisible ultimate ability that's copied and pasted between every game in the genre. Anyways I still have no choice but to preorder the game when its available, the reality of this game's situation will never outweigh the hope I have for it. Great video!
This video from them sounds like an apology to investors rather than something we should be seeing as the public. It comes off really.... pathetic. Not calling them pathetic, but damn Bungie is really in deep.
Arc Raiders already has ability type of gadgets that you can equip and use. Yes, anyone can equip any of them, but in practice it isn't any different from the disparities between what classes will probably be in Marathon. Nothing about the nature of extraction shooters is counter to players having classes. HiddenXperia, a massive fan of Tarkov, played Marathon already and didn't have any problem with the classes being in an extraction shooter. Classes in an extraction shooter have also already been done by a game called, Dark and Darker, and it works just fine there.
