I was super lucky to get to work on this with Michael who was able to really pinpoint what excites people about the direction the art team for Marathon has taken. 2020s are boutta rock if more stuff takes on this look

Hey Jake! Rocco here, I'm the author of the design series you feature from 11:45 - that's a super cool video and love to be quoted among the influences in a massively, insanely cool design scene.. But also, the coincidence is that my projects directly quotes Marathon (one of my favourite games when I was a kid) with the cover of the playlist Street Fighting Mechs, where I used the 90s Marathon logo as the icon for that mix (all the playlist from that project feature an animated cover artwork and a small custom icon!). Awesome work love this kind of "full circle" moments :)
I love the way you kept to marathons artstyle with the editing, I can tell you spent HOURS searching the web for the very limited information we have on this whole project

Such a beautiful video, the editing and visuals are absolute eye candy. This channel is very underrated and will probably blow up after this video. I hope all TH-cam videos can be like this!
Another example of this is the product design in the recent movie "Substance" (the drug branding and packaging). The see through-plastic, neon colours and functionalism similar to the Aphex twin album. Great vid!
the first time I saw the Marathon trailer I was literally speechless from how gorgeous it looked. I think you're right, it really feels like an evolution of the "abstract and surreal yet grounded" look the trilogy had.
I’ve been hyped for Marathon just because of its visual identity! I haven’t seen such a striking design style since Wipeout, Control or Cyberpunk 2077. Absolutely stunning work by the design team. Great video Jake!

I really appreciate you putting the effort into breaking this art style down. As someone who deeply resonates with this style, it took me a bit to understand how to approach it in my designs but this video really brought it home. Thank you!
Wow, that may have been the most visually satisfying/interesting video I have seen on TH-cam, not to mention informative and entertaining! There are not enough compliments I can give to you and the editor! Really makes me hype for the game and graphic design in general! Makes me wonder if we are going to have our own "roaring twenties" as it seems we're starting to buck corporate sterilism in favor of more stylized aesthetics, even if they incorporate sterility artistically. It makes me feel like we're in our own 90's/Y2K renaissance with all the interesting aesthetics emerging or returning, even though I wasn't able to experience the 90's. The graphical realism is a great term which describes how I've felt about bungies halo games for a long time, specifically their later ones. Halo 3, ODST and Reach all have really cool graphical concepts, with fun and punchy colors, especially 3, which is almost "cartoon-like", but with some hi-fi textures that give it a grounded realism look; like it *could be* real, hypothetically. Their art direction was always my favorite. Super hyped for Marathon to be going back to Bungie's roots and updating it for the modern day. Sounds like a true spiritual successor. Hoping for the best!

I sincerely hope Bungie nail it and Marathon becomes a hit. Btw, loved every second of this video. Very informative and, at the same time, inspiring. Gotta hand it to Michael for his amazing editing skills!
I've been trying to explain why its such good art design because they don't overdo the futurism and that that most cyberpunk adjacent art styles are usually overdone which is what makes Marathon and The Finals so cool. I couldn't put a word to it but "Graphic Realism" hits the nail on the head I think. Part of most futuristic art styles that annoys me alot is extreme detail, I tend to prefer what you said "free of visual noise, clean, and deliberate shapes". The item or environment you are designing should feel familiar and relatable in some way. I see people all the time making all these extreme and gaudy futurist designs with extra loop cuts, buttons, lights and all that aren't practical or don't fit into a real life design. The finals keeps the practicality of the real world while allowing for stylization. Marathon is overtly futuristic and showey but is deliberate in doing so. Great video.
youtube doesn't deserve such a good content, you literally manage to print the art style in your words... clean, direct and efficient, all while managing to be engaging and easy to understand . You are a great writer, editor and video director.
The last images are some of my favorite of Marathon. The very last one with the Security Officer holding up what looks like a spine like design is my screen saver on my phone.
Loved the video I've always been obsessed with references like this ones and seeing it on a videogame it got me really excited. This helps me to proyect this styles on art of my own. Thank you for making this video.

It is kinda baffling having such an in depth deconstruction of a game's art direction despite gameplay being nonexistent though lol, and at the same time some people just lambaste it with the idea that it's just "DEI pandering" somehow.
I'm really excited for the period where the art style stays really tight and close to the original vision before it looses focus and loosens the reins (as all live service games kind of end up doing a little over time)
This direction feels like a natural evolution from Destiny because that game always had this strong sense of graphic design and UI sensibilities. It’s also flexible enough to vary between seasonal and expansion styles because there’s gothic elements in some graphic realism art. The “fashion” of this Marathon makes me think Nike meets scuba diving and marine biology, which also fits the graphic design elements they’re going for.
