    You've only scratched the surface that is the hodgepodge of the stories of Charlemagne. They get so much worse in terms of continuality and consistency. The stories of Charlemagne vary in terms of not only of the authors, but of where they were written in. The stories of Charlemagne are not only in French, but German, Italian, Spanish. The conquest of the real Charlemagne's campaigns spread him far and wide to the point where different countries had different interpretations of him. We got chansons, and then we got wild ass legends.
    The Italians made up an entire backstory for the fantasy Charlemagne, where, I kid you not, sounds like a parody of Cinderella (Charlemagne and his 3 older half brothers that hate his guts). In it, he's portrayed as the only one in his family with 'pure royal blood.' This is the case because Pepin was supposed to marry Berta , who was the daughter of a Hungary King (who was commented to have really large feet. We don't know why, but this is her defining characteristic). She decided to run away in the woods after finding a twin, and this twin pretended to be Berta and married Pepin, thus diluting the royal blood line. And Charlemagne only came to be because Pepin went hunting, found Berta in the woods, and slept with her because she was beautiful.
    It's a funny parallel compared to the real Charlemagne who was said to be the oldest of his siblings, and said to have been conceived before Pepin the Short actually married. And you actually read some bibliographies of the guy and most are like 'He never took his kingship seriously until later in life.' Which ok fair. His early kingship was just going off of Pepin's bucket list until he conquered the Lombards.
    Then there is the 'untold' sin of Charlemagne, that varies as well in interpretations. French people say the sin is incest, where they argue that Roland is not his nephew but his son that he had with his sister. Then you have the Germans who claim that the sin was necrophilia with one of his dead wives caused by a magic ring cursed by the Devil himself. This magic ring basically made him fall head over heels to whoever possessed the ring. It's so funny because it ends with him falling in love with a flipping SWAMP. The real Charlemagne's sin was said to be adultery, given the numerous people who claim to be his descendants and the fact that he did not call out Pope Leo III when people accused him as such. The man just really liked women.
    There is no consistency in the fantasy Charlemagne. He's just a bunch of loosely connected stories. Even the real Charlemagne's story can sound ridiculous at times. I'm still upset they just say the inconsistency of Karl and Charlie (according to Astolfo) comes from touching a dead alien's body and obtaining alien kush powers. And Karl uses this kush to Oracilize Servants. Which brings the question sometimes if he was fighting for the sake of God or Velber inserted funny things in his brain to make him think he was unifying Europe in the name of God.

      This is a big part of why I decided not to dig too deeply into Carolingian Legend in this video - while also making sure to point out that it is a chaotic mess. Digging into that stuff took up most of my research time for this video, and it was a complete mess. Though, at the very least, it will make doing the future videos on Roland, Astolfo, Bradamante, and Mandricardo easier. :D
      And yes, I was planning to mention the potential incest bit in the Roland video. o_o

      @ecotro 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@CrazyYurie Yeah it's absolutely wild in the degree. I remember reading an analysis of the chansons where someone said that Charlemagne isn't really a character in the chansons, but more of a 'pawn' or a 'piece' to progress the stories of the other characters (Mostly his Paladins as you mentioned). Given the different interpretations of his character in the numerous stories, it makes sense why Charlie himself sees that the stories he was in truly didn't give him justice. His character is probably the one most all over the place in the chansons compared to his Paladins, that do have moments where they jar away from their character, but they keep rather consistent overall.

      Sefar is the destroyer of civilization and literally gets stronger from attacks based on civilization. When Charlemagne came into contact with the mummified remains of Sefar and the Monolith in the tomb, he caught a glimpse of Velber and thought that he was given the god-given right to unite Europe and the world under one banner, aka a singular civilization (in reality, it was most likely that the vision of Velber infected him with Sefar’s mission in some shape and form as Astolfo remarked how Charlemagne seemed like something other than human after leaving the tomb). Even Altera remarked how he had the “stars’ will”, most likely meaning that Charlemagne inherited Velber’s mission in some form. You can see it as Charlemagne’s dream of unification essentially having the same roots as Altera’s fixation on judging if a civilization is bad or good and then destroying the bad.
      Basically, Sefar = something to do with judgement of civilization.

    For why Charlie's first skill works the way it does, I see it as a possible and fun nod to how Paladins are depicted in other works and pop culture. Charlie's skill is kind of like how Paladins in games like Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem have abilities that are used to shield allies from harm by forcing attacks to hit them instead of allies, sometimes the Paladin gains bonuses from doing this. You could see it as Charlie being rewarded for behaving like a proper Paladin, since he is the leader of the 12. He is rewarded and gains power by selflessly protecting others but is penalized by behaving cowardly and selfishly by using his protection skill on himself and thereby not covering for his allies and leaving them at the mercy of the enemies.

    It's heavily implied (or explicitly stated, I don't know exactly), that if you try to summon "Charlemagne Saber", you just get young Karl, without the personality nor the powers of his legends (except for a skill or two, probably).
    This is one of the few instances where we get to summon the 100% literary version of a character, which explains why is he so unstable when he does appear. It's like if we summoned "Count Dracula" instead of the Berserker vampire Vlad.
    There's always so many bs excuses to use literary characters despite they explicitly stating they cannot be Heroic Spirits (hence the several Phantoms in Higashide's Singularities), like the 'they were always historical but the book is based on them', that seeing them tackle a pure fictional version of someone for once is a breath of fresh air.

Charlie's deal in extella is that normally no matter how you summon him what he has done in real life will vastly overshadow the legend is has even in Saber form and it's only happened because of outside circumstances in extella link.

    So, I have a question for you….ive noticed a lot of FGOs servants might have so little screen time or lore that they end up kinda doing nothing. For example
    One of my favorite beserkers is Eric bloodaxe. But I know as lore and gameplay goes…he kinda got shafted. Do you plan on doing maybe SHORTS based on characters with so little to go off, that you couldn’t make a full video on them?
    Or do you think every servant has just enough info that you will be able to make a full video?

    • @CrazyYurie
      @CrazyYurie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I've done videos on characters like Jekyll & Hyde, Mephistopheles, and Phantom who have gotten next to no screen time. I plan to do a video on everyone who isn't a Type-Moon original - and that includes Erik Bloodaxe. :3

      I'm not actually sure which videos have taken the longest to do, since I don't actually keep track of how many hours each one takes. But, since you mention it? Well tbf some good did come about for us English losing our mythology and picking up a more inspired French version. It made Tolkien go you know WHAT!? Fine I'll write an mythology myself which worked out well for us. But in all seriousness I do need to look into French and European legends more because while I know a lot about the Greeks, Romans, Norse and Egyptian myths. "Younger" European legends or those more historical inspired are a little bit of a blind spot for me.
    Now saying that for some English rep in the future, I wouldn't mind seeing Nelson or Henry VIII get into Fate. Honestly I understand Nelson but I am shocked Henry isn't a servant, Imagine his suffering of all six wife's being summoned with him.

    ok before i go into how much of a banger this video is, i wanna say southings.
    1 it is an atrocity that we have yet to get another fate game involving the extra verse (id rather have that over fsr).
    2 i think we all can agree Charlies other haff should be playable.
    this video was awesome, from the lore behind his power, skills and ability's to the legend that spans four different lands, i can safly say thta you did a grand job on this.
    though it sadness me that you couldn't add some stuff like how he's supposed to be summoned in the body of his saber counterpart but with the powers of his ruler variant or that leagued i mention about the ring.
    but all and all you did good

      The new Extra game yet to release is a remake of the original one with probably better storytelling, so I'm just eager for it to come out. The Extraverse is so good but it always gets a bad reputation in the west either because of localization issues or the actual game being... mediocre, like Extella.

    A few things
    1) Ruler isn't ruler of a nation, but one who rules over the grail in an unbiased manner. Hence why most "true" rulers are Saints
    2) Charlie (Saber) is explicitly the mythical version whereas Karl is the historical version, it's not merely a matter of age

    • @aredjayc2858
      @aredjayc2858 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Regarding the "True" Ruler thing I'd mentioned I refer to Rulers who don't possess altered saint graphs (Martha), aren't only summonable via the FATE system (not QSH) and aren't lumped into the class via game mechanics (Zeus).

    • @CrazyYurie
      @CrazyYurie  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The original Rulers were like that, but it seems like Fate has gradually done away with it.

    • @aredjayc2858
      @aredjayc2858 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CrazyYurie Fair, I mean FFS QSH has a skill that's basically "it's morally good to oppress confuscians".
      That being said I thought it important to note that "Ruler" isn't the same as the "King" trait (as in the ruler of a nation/people/country etc.) as that seemed to be the implication with your phrasing

    • @aredjayc2858
      @aredjayc2858 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CrazyYurie BTW, Fate's alignment system weirdness is due to a number of servants' alignments being based in self perception.
      See Kojiro's Bond 1 line,
      "If you kill someone, no matter who you are, you are evil."
      As he's Neutral-Evil despite not doing anything particularly evil.
      Similar logic would explain the "Evil" of Sanson, Kiritsugu, Chiyome etc.
      I list Kiritsugu as he should be in a similar position to EMIYA who is instead True Neutral
