    This was my first time working with fellow Brooklyn-based TH-camr and guitarist Rotem Sivan, and I wanted to chose a song simple enough in form to let his extraordinary playing style take center stage. We met up for the first time at his apartment and shot this that day after he made me a delicious sandwich and some unusually strong lemon water.
    I first came to this song via the french group Nouvelle Vague, who recorded a bossa nova cover of this on their excellent 2004 eponymous debut.

    Wow, this came out of left field, wasn’t really expecting you to cover Joy Division, but I love it. I’d like to sugest a cover of any Elliot Smith song, I am sure you like his music and I think it suits your style quite well

      Agreed… I’d love to hear his take on Elliot Smith! but I cannot stress this enough, it needs to be Josh’s vocals as lead. Sometimes when he duets with others(cough Carson) his beautiful voice is overpowered.

    • @ColtonRoberts95
      @ColtonRoberts95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm with ya, now if other folks wanna provide accompaniment with harmonies and such I think he could make a beautiful arrangement of a whole host of Elliott's work (Can't Make a Sound, Alphabet Town, Roman Candle, Waltz #1, etc).

    I've been rediscovering Joy Division this week. I was in junior high school when this was new music. Great to see you guys sharing it with your age group. That sounded old, but you get it. Joy Division and New Order paved the way for the great 1980's love songs and laments. The wall was still up, Cold War was raging, Reagon was President and we were scared. Music like this and John Hughes films got us through it all. Thanks for the song, well done.

    Not familiar with the song or with Rotem, but I really enjoyed this. I got a strong Pat Metheny vibe from Rotem on this (playing and facial expressions!), which is about as high a compliment as I can give. Excellent!

    Wow, not just an interesting, but also very beautiful version! Rotem´s guitar sounds like a myriad of computers, that all make some sort of a beeping noise until it´s sounds like a space symphony. Bowie would have loved it!

    Wow! Wow! Wow! As a big Joy Division fan, I’ve heard this song covered so so often and almost always it is completely butchered and very rarely done justice. You have absolutely nailed this! Coming from Britain, this is one of the greatest songs by a British band and I’m so happy to hear you cover this. Absolutely fantastic, wonderfully subtle vocals, beautiful instrumentation. The use of a twelve string was a stroke of genius and I love the electro feel on the accompaniment, gives it a real modern feel while sticking to the Joy Division/New Order sound.

    Nice duet... a bit Frippy ......but a tough rythm and tight you two..... you can see how all that rehearsing paid off for Joy Division... plus their amazing sound guy and poet lead singer...... pop song hit and melancholy....... but it's a dance song..... kinda unique

    I'm not familiar with Joy Division, but I like this. The guitar solo lifted my spirit, and the lyric reminded me of my youth, so much longing for love that went unrequited. Too much pain for Ian Curtis. I hope he's fairing well in his new home.

    oh, oH, OH! Josh, been a fan for quite a while, first I've heard Rotem. Wow, this song just takes me to a place that.... well, that's mine. But, another beautiful arrangement, and while your vocals and guitar playing are impeccable and as captivating as ever Josh, Rotem hits it out of the park, absolutely marvelous. I found myself having to remind myself to breathe during this performance. Fair enough, even if The Shaggs did a rendition, I might be captivated. But seriously, this was a killer, well done! Thank you so much.

    • @gatoryak7332
      @gatoryak7332 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I loved Rotem's playing. I agree that the looped beat didn't work so well. But I never heard one that did. One or both of the guys could have been playing the beat with their feet; that would've been better, even if only just for the dynamics. Josh is great at dynamic playing and this performance is a good example.

    I own a late '70s Aspen 'law-suit' copy of that Martin D18-12. Makes a fantastic sound. Also live about 15 mins away from where Ian Curtis was born and brought up. I was living and working in Macclesfield when he lived there and worked in Manchester when he played and recorded there. In the late '80s and early '90s I met Tony Wilson, then co-owner of Factory Records, a couple of times too. Ian's daughter Natalie went to school with my daughter and they remain friends today, though she's now a well-established professional photographer living in London. So I relate to this song and strongly suspect that Ian would have approved of this version.
