What Happened When a Devout Muslim and Devout Catholic Got Married in Small-Town Iowa

  • In 1985, Laura Fendt fell in love with a Muslim immigrant from Egypt named Kamal Hammouda. They spontaneously got married that fall. Then they got married again that winter, this time by a priest. It began more than three decades of an interfaith union that many people, Muslim and non-Muslim, still don’t think should exist.
What happens when a devout Muslim and devout Christian commit to each other, especially when neither sees a need to convert? We went to small-town Iowa to find out.

I never thought religion would have been a problem but last month he dumped me because his family found out about us. I wished we could have worked things out like this couple. Now I'm miserable and depressed. I wish good luck to any Muslim/ Christan couple.

Susan Proctor Arabs are not native to the birth place of Christianity or Judaism, isreal.. They migrated there much later, Arabs were primitive nomads and merchants without written language or culture roaming the Arabian desserts as nomadic merchants , Islam is basically a conflation and corruption of stolen Judaism and Christianity intermingled with the medieval 6th century customs of Bedouin nomads and whatever drivel was advantageous to its founder . Arabs are only present in those regions present day because of Muslim ottoman empire plantation, they are not reflective of the original inhabitants during the days of Abraham or jesus. The native peoples of Israel were apparently Mediterranean looking, , fair complexioned.. Not at all related to Arabs. Islam is a pagan Bedouin Arab conquest cult that hides behind appropriated and fraudulent abrahamic religious conceit.

      First of all it wasn't Mohammed, It was GOD Almighty itself and just in the belief of fair education here are the verses you reference or at least one of them;
      The Holy Quran
      2 :190
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors.
      2 : 191
"And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers."
      2 : 192
And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
      2 : 193
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.
P.S - Fitnah means unrest or rebellion.
Dear, Brother or Sister or whoever you maybe. I mean no disrespect and you have my heartfelt respect for using references for your argument. I just mean clear any misunderstanding you may have about my faith.
If you have any questions I please encourage you to get them clarified with an Imam or an Aalim, you will be surprised as to how much of what you understand about my faith is misinterpretation.
      With love and respect.

It’s so refreshing to see that two people were able to come together, love each other , marry, and raise children despite coming from different religious backgrounds. They both kept their faiths intact, none converted for the other nor for the excuse to marry the other. They kept true to themselves, their beliefs and raised children together as a couple. Obviously they have enough love and respect for each other’s pov culturally and religiously or else this wouldn’t have worked with children involved. Like I said before it’s refreshing to see, I just wish that people from all sides of the spectrum could give others the same love and respect in an everyday encounter. We are more alike than we are different.

The fact that my father had this whole other religion that I didn't know or understand really put a big distance in our relationship. I grow up not know half of my father just because of this fact. I don't want him to grow up like I did, I was a Muslim and did everything I was supposed to up until 17, just because my parents were and that's what I was told to do, then I went through an agnostic faze and researched and studied the major religions from ABCD, took me two years to make sure Islam is what I want to follow. A viable solution is to raise them to believe in God, the prophets, (including prophet Muhammed [pbuh], but only with regard to teachings about morals and not faith), and other similarities between the two. Eventually, the child will choose a faith, can be from 7 years old to 30 years old and beyond.

And it is easy to play fast and loose with the "ruling" but do you know EVERYTHING behind this ruling? Khair, this is not a Muslims way to talk like that to another Muslim/non-Muslim in this or any public platform brother Tarik. I'm married to a Muslim husband strong in his faith and I am strong as a Christian. He takes the kids to Mosque and prays with the 5 times a day.. I take them to church every other week and I pray with my children daily! We definitely fight because hubby doesn't want them in church, but I couldn't imagine my children not knowing Jesus as the son of God and that he died on the cross for our sins. I am not a Trinitarian. I believe in One God who through the body of Christ Jesus on the cross, reconciled the world to Himself! GOD IS IN Heaven, did not die on the cross, God's spirit in Jesus did not die, the body God used to reconcile us to HIM died and God resurrected that body 3 days later. One God, not 3 Gods..I strongly believe Jesus is the only way to get to Heaven and can never be so casual with my children's salvation. Hell is real and eternal and I as a Christian woman need my children to learn about Jesus Christ being more than just a prophet. I respect Muslims and deeply love my husband...salvation of our children is top priority because their decision has eternal consequences..So no ma'am, your children need to know what you believe, why you believe it and experience being around people who believe like their Mom. Just like they did with their Dad!

If you really love each other, you will allow, even encourage the other to pursue and keep their interests and their beliefs. This couple is not just an example of two people of different faiths “making it”, this couple is an example of completely loving the other and not asking them to change. There would be a LOT less divorce if a spouse didn’t expect the other to change after they’re married. Why should they?

How can it be anti-Christ if it accepts all of this which infact is the same thing that Christianity says? Islam was sent by the God of Abraham to reconfirm what He had said in the older scriptures and to correct the parts which were put in them by corrupt human beings.

      The Great Shocker
Islam is antichrist. They are calling jesus a liar by denouncing the crucifixion and the resurrection. You cannot be a follower of jesus if you reject those.
Also, what do you mean by "it is dangerous for Muslims out there" ? 😂
It should be more like, it is dangerous for non muslims out there, especially Christians and Jews.😀

    • @FactFusionU
      @FactFusionU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

tinky winky123 you are saying that muslims, who are ready lay down their lives for the honour of their Prophets, will call Jesus a liar? That's an insult to muslims.
Muslims dont call him a liar because he didnt even say that he is getting killed. As muslims we believe he was saved by God and he is alive. And that He will return back and establish God's rule by defeating anti-Christ. Only the best of believers will be with him that time.
Obviously such Islamophobic propaganda is dangerous for thw common muslim who just goes about his own business. He can be subject to hate crimes if you tell people that lies like muslims hate Jesus (May God forgive me for even saying this). On the contrary, its the Jews who hate Jesus with all their guts. You however, seem to care more about them than the muslims who are actually closer to you than the jews. The Quran says Christians are the closest to Muslims among believers and that they are our brothers and feel our pain. Unfortunately, it will take a lot of time for a lot of Christians to acknowledge it because most of them dont even know how close we are to them in belief.

So typical of the father to want his kids to be strictly muslim. Muslim men marrying christian women is not atypical, but every couple I encountered always raised their kids muslim according to the fathers wishes. The kids always grow up respecting their father more than their mother. The kid telling his mom that she can’t tell him what to do because she’s not muslim is proof.

"That's not my kids, that's not my husband." But... she just said her kids say to her, "you can't tell me what to do, you're not Muslim." It makes me think that somehow inherent in the religion is the concept that local laws or authorities are not to be respected. Is this actually the case? Does Islam have a "give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" clause, too?

In Islam no woman can give a command to a male of any age. Long before any media attention was given to Muslims in the U.S. I studied to be a teacher. We had to learn about Muslim practices because there is a large Muslim population in one of the area school districts, and Muslim culture and religion is emphasized there. We were told that even if a 5 year old boy in kindergarten bites a classmate, or even the teacher, the child cannot be admonished or disciplined by a female - not the teacher, not a female principal, not the mother. Only a male teacher or principal could admonish, and the father would discipline. I chose not to apply for a position in that district.

@Caramel Cupcake - it was part of the Detroit area teacher training program, taught by Muslims in a multi-cultural format, and is why I refused to take any assignment in any majority-Muslim district.

''They should believe in something called God or higher power, more so then being a Christian.''
What kind of Christian says she prefers her child to go to Hell then to be with God.
    That's not Christian at all.
    Never compromise God.

Go to hell? No my friend. Christianity does not make sense at all. Go watch some Muslim scholars debating against christian scholars. Most of the time muslim wins.

How the heck do you know her children will go to hell? Simply because they are not Christian?
What if when judgement day came and God said her children will enter heaven because of their good deeds and throw you in hell fire because you are so full of yourself? If that's happened, what are you gonna say at that time?

this story is amazing and what i wish happened more as a Canadian born Muslim...with love it is possible. “us versus them” rhetoric is what will/is destroying us when we have our common core values as the same... i did pay attention because this made my heart smile, but more importantly...the interviewer has a very, very dashing smile 😍😅
