All these cats in the how-to videos just lay there pretty as you please and allow the human to do whatever they need to. And then down in the comments are we folks in the real world with squirming, bolting masses of claws and teeth.
Holypickle my cat isn't feral and he gets VERY aggressive whenever I touch his nails. I've had him since a kitten and even though in this video the cat was upset, she never bolted or kicked nor was she overly aggressive about it.
this is the calmest cat i've ever seen. a true fractious doesn't just sit there growling but is trying to tear u to pieces the first hint of a table and blanket
One of our cats is literally the sweetest thing just complains meows when we trim his nails but no growling or scratching but our 2nd cat is a nightmare the moment she sees a blanket or towel she starts to hiss and growl and claw and bite and if you manage to restrain her she'll pee on you there's no way to get out of it unscathed we even had to start using leather gloves to keep hands safe its definitely an ordeal.
THANK YOU!!!! Nobody will trim my cats claws because of his attitude, including my VET!!! I used a bath towel, and literally swaddled him the same way, he was upset as always and kept trying to pull his paws away, but I prevailed, no harm, no reprimands, no injury to myself done in a couple of minutes. I’m in disbelief this worked...genius!
my cat acts out even more now when wrapped in a blanket. tried it tonight and he swatted at both my face and my roommates face and we’re scratched up now. the vet isn’t very fond of him either. i feel so stuck, i have no idea how to get him to tolerate nail trims.
I have to take 2 of my former feral cats to TNR (trap neuter release) places that deal with feral cats on a daily basis because regular vets just end up getting bit/scratched...I need to see a someone demo how to catch a feral cat in your house and then try to give it a pill and trim their nails and not die in the process.
This video is so helpful! My cat didn't allow me to get close to her nails but they've grown way too long and caused problems (e.g. get stuck in fabrics, toys and carpet and make her panick).. I wrapped her up like a burrito with a cat head like instructed and the struggles were less fierce and violent!!! She just protested by whining and making the same noise your cat did in the video, but I still managed to cut all her nails and now she's happily enjoying her treats :3 Thank you so much for this video!!
I have a 3 almost 4 month old, and I am training him one nail at a time. I have trouble exposing the nail fast enough before he quickly pulls his leg! I let him work on a small plastic cap with wet food, seems to help distract...for one second. 😂
Sitting here watching this with a 7 inch scratch on my arm,I got his claws trimmed but man is he strong and I always end up with atleast one bad scratch or bite.I have never met a cat who is worse than mine during nail trims. He is the sweetest most loving boy in the world but during nail trims he suddenly transforms and seems to summon demons who give him super human strength, ruthlessness and ninja like reflexes,I sure hope this method works.I am going to try it for next time..Thank you.
This reminds me of a cat video many years ago when YT first started. The guy is wearing a short sleeve shirt and he started showing how to trim, the video skips a few seconds and there he is finishing up. But now he has a long sleeve shirt and two bandages that magically appeared. Yep, no doubt that was a real video with your average cat.
Thank you Dr. Andrew. I followed this method and successfully and finally managed to trim our 3 cats nails!!! It worked even on a cat the vet did not manage to trim the nails!! And we have suffered scratches all over. God Bless you!!!
I just tried this way and my cat flipped out. 😬 But then, I put a bunch of treats in my daughters hand for him to eat and got it done safely with no trauma for either of us! Just to give another option to those reading..... ❤️
Thats what I watched my daughter do in the animal.hosp.she works at.i recorded it.and if was the day I adopted him so.i didn't no this cat at all. But they used a squeeze push up treat and while my daughter trimmed his nails I fed him the treat .But doing it at home alone is a bit scary when he let's out a growl..
Here are few tips, from someone who owns 13 cats. When youve been trimming your cats nails since he was a kitten they would get used to it. But if you just tried to trim your cat all grown up, always do it when they just woke up from a long nap, no blankets needed. After every trim, give them treats.
Persistence and treats is key. Don’t try to do all of them at once. Give your cat breaks. Reward them when they allow you to trim them and are calm. It took me forever to get my 4-month-old kitten’s right front paw. The back paws are easier for him. He literally laid down and let me hold his hind paws. You have to be quick but careful. The longer you take to clip it, the more annoyed and stressed they get. Also the blanket trick is a godsend.
in theory, I completely agree that you "should" do it in stages, but these squirmers/hissers are so hold to get settled, that once you do, you just want to get them done. I think I need to try more frequently so that he becomes more desensitized by it and I can do it in sections. Fingers crossed. 🤞
Cat just lays there. Now, what do I do about a cat that nearly tries to break his own neck to get out of towel restraint when trying to give ear mite drops.
Impressed by the term fractious. I confess that I had to look it up. Most doctors can’t write a grammatically correct sentence with proper punctuation. This must be why veterinarian school is more difficult to get into than medical school. Color me impressed.
@@robertoleon2408 Nice of you to try to push a product sale, but that clipper looks extremely bulky and that in itself can make the cat even more scared. They would never work for many cats whose nails I trim. They don't want to feel bulky tools against their feet. They don't want to feel the tool at all. That's the problem with most nail clippers.
I feel better about myself knowing there are cats that growl like that even when their person is an expert. My cat is so friendly he would never growl at me - but he's still too feisty for me to clip his claws by myself.
I tired this and it works, I just did it 5 minutes before writing this. Thank you for this video so much, I finally found something that works when cutting her nails on my own.
My cat, Mocha, is also 17 years old, and her nails are like talons! When she was a kitten, I started getting her used to nail clipping, just as I do with any cat I get. She let me do it then, but as she got older, she didn't want any part of that, and showed it by growling, hissing and swiping at me. She never bites. I think I would rather be bitten than scratched because scratches hurt more! Even though she's so old now, she's still VERY feisty! Her claws click on the floor and get stuck on fabrics and carpet. So I will have to try this method and see how it goes. I don't know about covering her head...she might flip out! Update: On january 17, 2023, Mocha had what we think, was a stroke and we had to put her down. 😢
I tried and it went south quickly. Got 1 talon cut. He's now hissing and growling when I walk by. 3 years of love, building trust, trying to get him used to his paws being touched but he has never allowed touching paws. Tonight he lost it when I tried this. Sigh, the vet has done it so maybe back to the vet we need to go.
You are awesome. I was cracking up at Gussy. Great job. I found you while looking for how to treat my male cat's abscessed bit wound (from his brother who is a bit of a control freak, we're working with them). Great info there. Thanks for helping all of us learn more diy and help animals without spending a fortune.
Worked for me! When we got our cat, the folks at the adoption agency trimmed his nails in front of us and he seemed so easy - not so at home. He will bite and scratch. Covering his whole head and body helped a lot. He even purred (though probably more self soothing than actually happy). Note- he was trying to run away before I got him wrapped, but I held him by the scruff of his neck and that helped a lot to keep him in place while I wrapped
I haven’t tried the blanket trick yet, but I’ve been working on trying to sneak in trimming a couple nails every couple of days. He definitely doesn’t like being restrained but the vet just doesn’t trim them short enough and if I can just keep the tips of the new razors at bay I’m happy.
Mine usually are okay with trimming if I've done it consistently since they were kittens. Immobilizing with a towel usually works, but some cats are much more fearful of confinement than others, and can struggle to the point they hurt themselves or you, and for them I just put up with the fidgeting, and the super long time it takes to get each nail before they start to struggle. It takes longer, but we don't resent each other when it's done. I always follow up trimmings with a good wire brushing which they love. And I praise them whenever they hold still and are compliant, and scratch. I never scruff them, ever.
I do not believe this cat was ever angry or otherwise excitable. My cat will have none of it. He would not sit long enough for the blanket. Just moving the blanket would have been enough to make him take off. Since he was a kitten, he refused to get his claws clipped. It is a very stressful event for all involved and generally takes 2 of us to do it. I have to hold him by the scruff of his neck, that will immobilize him, and my wife clips the claws. He still attempts to fight and bite. When we let him go, his fur gets all ruffed up and he goes and hides for a day. She gave him a bath, per vets instructions, once as a kitten. That did not go well. She tried again when he got older and larger. The end result was she (the wife) needed 10 stitches and a number of shots. I had to do a lot of convincing not to have the cat put down which she threatened to do. I am convinced he is mentally damaged. Also, the last time we took him to the vet, he almost snapped his neck struggling to get out of the carrier. He is a loving cat, or can be. But, everything is so stressful for him. I am afraid he will stress himself to a heart attack at some point.
Cats usually fight baths bc the water is too cold. The water should be hotter than you’d think. I bathe my cats in water that’s the same temp I bath in (my dogs prefer cooler so they get like warm baths). I bath every kitten I get once or twice a week for the first several months I have it, then I down grade to once every few weeks. I try to bathe adult cats once every 6 months. Having them be used to it as well as using the right temp water really, really helps. I’m also very firm and consistent with all of my animals about my rules, but I still let them develop their own personality. My newest kitten likes to go hiking on leash with the dogs and at the vet is a very pissy man (to be fair, they fixed him the last time he went, so he has a justified reason). But I will NOT let my cats run out of the bathtub for anything. If they start to get mad, they get scruffed.
For cats like that, I lay a towel on my lap, and then call the cat over and begin petting them. As I'm petting them I get in a position where I can keep control of their body, and I'll swaddle them as gently as I can, and talk to them and praise them until I'm ready to trim. I pick them up and move to a table or desk, because it makes it easier to lean over them and use my body to help limit their motion while I trim. One thing that ALWAYS works, is a cat facial mask. It's like a blinder that goes on over their head, leaving their nose free, but covering the mouth and eyes, and they go limp with that on. It's heavy handed though and increases their stress level so I don't use it if I can help it. Pretty much only for things like cleaning the ears.
Hi, my cat's extremely aggressive as well, and we decided against clipping his nails. For the bath, we usually get a bucket of hot water and a mug, shut the bathroom door, and allow him to walk around as we slowly pour water on him. To shampoo, we usually pretend as though we're going to open the bathroom door to let him out, and as he's distracted, we quickly apply the shampoo, again pour the hot water, and slightly dry him with a towel as he continues to move around!
Scarlett Tomlinson this is so hallarious it sounds like such an event lol!!! We used to make a sudsy bath in the kitchen sink ..we'd put our cat in and wash her as fast as we could for 5 seconds only once a year ..and have towels layed everywhere so as she jumped out we could quickly dry her as much as possible ..then we would run a blow dryer about 4 feet away from her so she could dry off quicker then she would hide from us for the rest of the day ...nail clippings were once every month or 2 months sometimes and I always waited until see was asleep or extremely tired and she was eighther on my lap or i was sitting next to her gently holding her paw slowly clipped one nail per minute as not to wake her once I tried when she was wide awake she was very annoyed and gave me the meanest attitude and looks lol ...by the 8th clip i was almost done but she would try to destroy my hand that was holding the clipper
I really hope this work. Our loveable Siamese is very difficult to trim and my vet is going to start charging me $42.50 to trim Joey’s nails. This is their newest charge for 2019 now, up from $20 last year. I hope this technique works. You are very calming. I will try to be just like you! 💕💕
It’s 2023. I realize Gussie might not be with you anymore, but I appreciate this tutorial. She just had to be a fantastic lovable feisty curmudgeony sweet thing!!! My cat Pea is much like Gussie when it comes to a cat mani - pedi! lol!
thank you so much for demonstrating how to cut my cats nails she scratched me when I tried earlier but I followed your instruction and covered her head so she could not bite me and I had her wrapped up in a ball with one paw out and it took less than a minute. I've just done one front paw for now , shall let her calm down and do the others later Arwen is a loving cat but just hates her nails being clipped
This is by far the best video about cat nail trimming. Other videos just show the calm cats that don't move and easily done trimming. But honestly most cat don't like it and start growling
@@DrDeeKnight In the end I could cut the nail while cat was still waking up being drowsy. Didn't need to use the cover-the-head trick. Thanks for interest into Kriebel ☺
OMG -IT WORKED!!! I'm so surprise and grateful! Thank you SO MUCH! I have a cat like yours and it's been extremely hard to cut her nails. Maybe I'd get one paw at a time. I used a long scarf, cradled her and cut. However when I got to the back paws, I struggled a little, but that was my fault. I didn't cuddle as well. I am so appreciative!
It's always been an ordeal trying to trim my cats claws. She's basically good natured, but like most cats nail trimming turns her into a little monster... so I've been putting it off. Yesterday she scratched me when I tried to give her medicine. So I knew it was time to give it a go again. Reading this helped. Especially the comments made me see I'm not the only one whose kitty turns into a ferocious little beast. So I petted her for awhile, and then wrapped her in a blanket, including her head. I kept telling her what a good girl she was. She kept hissing at me but didn't fight me (this time) I managed to trim 3 of her claws on her left hand. I let her go and she raced away to hide.. I felt like I really accomplished something major. Until I realized I have another hand to go ! 😩... She did good though. We'll try the other hand tomorrow.. wish me luck
A vet has come out with a swaddling wrap since this video was posted which looks very promising. It can be used for nails, exams, subq and many other procedures. Does cost about $120 but will definitely be worth it if you do a lot of procedures or have multiple cats that need restraints.
Ngl its good sometimes my cat keep trying to bite me like SWEETIE WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR OLD SELF she even scratch me so i buyer myself some veteranian gloves but this is 100% good
I don't know how you have convinced your cat to calmly lay there and have her nails trimmed. I wrap my cat in thick furr mattress and still feel her claws digging in my legs. she goes crazy and starts running like firebolts. Doesn't let me clean her eyes, ears, or clip her nails.
Thank you for this video! Got my clipper today for my cat who has a permanent damaged lower back so she does not jump or scratch alot. Her nails grew to the point I could hear them tick on the floor, I was able to clip her front nails because of this technique. Too bad I was not able to clip her back ones as well. If she will not let me do them between now and two weeks I will take her to the vet, I bet they will thank me for doing the front ones lol!
I agree with the other comments. "Fractious" is a wee bit strong (I am being sarcastic, this is not even close.) Laying there growling is nothing. I have a post feral cat who has been with me for a year. I need to clip his nails. No I don't want a free ebook.......I want a real video of a feral cat or a real fractious cat having their nails done. No book is gonna do it. I need to see it.
Everyone in the comments acting like they are pros must be real annoying to OP who is obviously trained and showed us exactly what the title said. Nowhere was there a mention of whether or not this would work on ALL or just extremely violent cats. Everyone just jumped to a conclusion instead of using common sense. Good job to this guy!!!
Thank you for this. Very helpful. I would have really liked to have seen a close up of the actual nail trimmers you used and a before and after shot of the nail. I’m viewing on a phone so a close up helps.
this is a very cooperative cat. if i tried this with my cat, she would thrash her way out of the blanket in 1 second and i would probably be in the hospital getting blood transfusions. i'm not an expert by any means, and every cat is different, but i'm gonna share some tips that help me trim the nails of my difficult cat (she is the sweetest kitty you can imagine usually, incredibly affectionate and friendly even towards complete strangers, but when you try to trim her claws she behaves like a banshee with rabies): -don't expect to be able to do it all in one take. i can usually get one or two claws done in one sitting, maybe a full paw if she's feeling especially cooperative. -treats will help gain back the cat's affection -i personally find that sitting down and holding the cat in place between my thighs works pretty well for me. wrapping my cat's hindquarters in a towel or blanket helps with cutting the front claws (it doesn't restrain very well, but it usually keeps her from bunny kicking for the time it takes to cut one or two of her front claws). for the back claws, i take it one at a time and Pray. -wear thick/all covering clothing. you probably don't have a padded suit lying around but jeans and a jacket work pretty well. -learn to be quick but not sloppy (remember that cutting the claw too far back will injure your cat). this is a matter of practice. -even with all of this, you will probably end up getting some scratches, but hey that's just part of cat ownership. of course, restraining your cat is not smth you should do lightly, it's more of a last resort. the best option is if you can train your cat to tolerate claw trimming from a young age, touch their paws when cuddling and reward them with treats etc. but for some that's not an option and you might still need to trim your indoor cats claws.
My 12 year old son and I just did my 13 year old cat. She had 6 going in her foot 😢 she usually would eat them off but had her k9s removed last year and I didn’t think about her nails 😢 she cried a little but did really good. If you show your scared they will feel it and be scared. I have it in my calendar now every 4 weeks to do it.
I have a Charcoal and White Tuxedo that weighs over 11 lbs, he's absolutely SOLID (built like a Pitbull) and is only 9-months old. The power this cat has in his jaws and Claws is unreal. I had my arm split open several layers deep with one swipe of a paw trying to cut his nails. He has never been thrilled to get them done, but the older he gets, the more aggressive he becomes when it comes to that. Even attempting to turn him into a Kitty PURRITO would require 3 people.
*Ouch...I just got nailed by my one year old Roscoe.. He hit my blood vessel and* *my hand is swollen and throbbing. ONE scratch..It felt like a fish hook in my* *hand. errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.* *Trying this method tonight.*
I made my cat an appointment to have her nails trimmed, left, got a call twenty minutes later to come pick her up because they couldn't do it. They told me to encourage scratching, and she does use her post a lot, but now has an ingrown dew claw.
Our cat has gotten out of the most complex blanket wrap in less than a second. When I say our cat goes from calm and nice to a complete demon, I’m not kidding. Where’s the cat Daddy 😭 our cat is crazy
The last time we took our little old lady cat (just turned 17) to get her claws done by the vet, she clipped them all *completely off*, right back as far as they'd go. We didn't notice until we got her home and she was dripping blood from every foot. Obviously we've been doing it ourselves since then!! Every foot I can usually get gently while she's sleeping, except the front right which she always sleeps on. Will be trying the towel tonight!
I had a cat who was so obnoxious when we tried to comb her that it was literally impossible. She was a Persian, so daily combing, brushing and eye wipes were mandatory. But THIS one was a short-hair trapped in a long-hair coat, apparently! Worse-- I was/am a vet tech and even I couldn't handle grooming this cat at home. Some cats are just SO touchy that there's not much you can do, and even my pro skills just weren't doing the job. I was also worried about psychological stress on her, so I took her to work with me one day when she was badly matted. The vet came in with a comb. As soon as Kepler saw that comb, she came unglued. She was a literal Tasmanian devil. Doc just sputtered, "This is fkn ridiculous...", got the anesthesia induction chamber, turned on the gas and oxygen as high as it would go (standard for this chamber) and knocked Kepler's fuzzy little a** out. Then we grabbed the clippers and gave her a good lion cut shave-down, bath and claw trim. When she woke up, she was pissed at first, but then... it was like a whole new cat. She must have felt good, because she was very sweet after that. The anesthesia was only gas and since we did her in the morning and I worked till evening, and she spent the day, she was fully awake and clear. She was just happier as a shorthair, so we did lion cuts under gas anesthesia 3 times a year. Then, I could actually brush her just a little bit.
Ok now I am on step two. I mastered the front claws as my kitty is now accepting it & not that fearful so I can do her front claws as she watches--she is more or less free of serious restraint. The hind feet claws are totally another issue! Oh yes. The idea totally freaks her out--what are you trying to do to my hind feet & claws!!!, so I tried to put her on her side & hide her face & restrain her with a t-shirt. It was not enough at all. Yesterday I covered her with a very fluffy throw blanket & kept her head in--she was trying to escape by rearing out of it. I was able to cut all her hind claws of one paw only by restraining her with my left arm. She was not shrieking in fear at all this time & it was done very quickly & securely . I then let her out & gave her treats. Next week I'll do the other paw which already had one or two claws already clipped. Another success story. One person alone can do this if you don't have an exceptionally scared cat. The hind feet claws may require a blanket & extra restraint.
This is perfect. Short and sweet. I had just enough time to paint some newskin on the back of my hand and learn a better way to trim the nails. Cheers!
I have 2 cats, both are 5 years old. One is a tuxedo and the other is a gray tabby. My tuxedo is my sweet girl, she is affectionate ALL THE TIME and let's me trim all her nails while she just rests calmly in my lap...my tabby on the other hand is like a satan spawm demon when I have to trim hers. I have to cover her like you did with a towel or blanket, she growls and hisses and if I don't cover her face completely, she will bite and bring the blood!🙁 unfortunately I had to learn that one the hard way BUT it only happened once! Lol I guess it is just a process she absolutely HATES no matter how gentle I am with her but it has to be done. 🙃 Thanks for the video!
Tried that, with our female cat who 8 years old, she is a biter and the towel method doesn't work with her. It takes 2 of us, I have had to fashon some rubber guards for my arms, my wife has to wear eye protection as well. Even with this, it takes several attempts to get all 4 paws done as she is VERY quick and strong even though she is a house cat. We are now considering a muzzle for our cat. BTW, she give no verbal warnings, we have nicknamed her 'A polaris Missile' because she is so fast and hits hard that she doesn't just break the skin, she bruises as well, all with her teeth. We have had her from 6 weeks old and has NEVER been mistreated. We think her mother was a feral.
Let me just say that after numerous hours of researching I was about to give up. But by the grace of God 🙏😘 😅 I found your channel and let me just say you're content regarding more holistic loving care and actual real approaches on vet. Care for animals much like this video here has saved me and my cat 😊❤ thank you for all the hard work time & dedication you've passionately put in helping animals and their parents
I had a giggle at her hissing at you.. What a ticked off unimpressed kitty she was for your video!! hahaha Thank you! Now I have to attempt to trim the razor blades from my kitten....She's 9 weeks old and hasn't learned to keep em retracted yet and I'm starting to look a little scarred!!
My precious cat had for 15 years (RIP boy) was brilliant and got in routine of when I would cut my nails he would wait patiently and then I would sit him in my laps and cut his nails.....oh I still miss him so much😻 However my kitten have had for a year now thinks he's a pittbull and his nails (as cat owners know) are like fine tip burning needle heads, and I just finding it impossible to try and cut and they need to be trimmed!! Help...anyone???
Hmmm...doing it after you clip your nails might work for my boy. He only has back claws. The previous owner declawed his front paws - I got him at a shelter when he was 5. He doesn't go outside so that's ok but he does Not like me to even touch his back paws. Thanks for the tip.
My cat immediately starts to wiggle around and ferociously claw and bite me so although this video is great when it comes to the process of timming a cat's nails, it does little to help me learn how to control the cat for the trimming to take place! But thanks for an otherwise wonderful video!
Thank you for the blanket method it worked really well for my cat I had to use your blanket method on her cuz she has a wound on her face and I use the blanket method from this video thanks I will probably use it in the future for trimming her nails
LOL New Subscriber👇!! I Love You Both, EACH of You, better yet. Everything about this video is PURRRFECT😅!! First time commenter, after many many videos (I Thank You Sir😉You are VERY much appreciated). 🐾
Modesta Saso so true!! Animals can definitely sense it. When I take my cat to get a bath or trimmed, she lays there quietly and calm. When I try to do the same things at home, totally different story lol
My cat is the nicest to me and any person ever, he purrs real loud so everyone knows he's happy, although when it comes to nail cutting he flips out scratching, slapping, hissing, ect
Does 'Fractious' mean barely annoyed enough to make a slight noise but not offering any actual resistance? I can handle little noises, I need help being shredded just touching a paw or trying to wrap in a blanket.
No offense intended Doc, but that IS NOT a feisty cat. That is not a happy cat, and she's getting madder by the second, but "feisty" in my book includes a lot of flailing limbs and twisting torsos. Gussie is downright precious in comparison to our cat!
The cat is growling the whole time and hissed once, but never tried to get away ... probably he realizes that he's going to lose the battle with the human, so may as well just suck it up and get the ordeal over with.
Thanks for sharing this! I have 2 cats. My female cat will cooperate and let me at least get her front nails done. The male cat gets a little on the ugly side so I wrapped his butt in a blanket today and managed to get his nails clipped...however he wasn't fond of any of the nail clipping experience lol. Thought it was funny when the vet said Happy New Years to you too. =)
I've found alot of My family members the cat attacks them and they call me to do their cats claws. I found my ability to get it done it is due to mostly two things. 1. I do not fear the cat hurting me. 2. I do not fear hurting the cat. I'm not stupid, I know either can happen. I just don't fear it. A cat weighs, what, 25 lbs at most? You have 100+ lbs to bear and a brain bigger than a baseball. If you do fear getting hurt then do what you must to give yourself a hide so you won't. Wrap arms in towels then a sweater etc. If you fear hurting the cat, then practice bearing your weight on a cat or even a small dog that you have a good play relationship with, where you trust ec other, so you are confident in how much pressure you can apply. It also helps if you can differentiate between a cat screaming bloody murder be sure it's angry/terrified vs actually hurt. So I usually pin the beast and wrap it in a blanket or towel, I've used small rugs with a big vicious biter, ill wrap the rug or coat around arm and when she goes to bite me I'll gently push my rug arm into her mouth. Once wrapped up and pinned in a way where the teeth and claws cant get me i take out 1 paw at a time and do the trim. During this I use whatever body pressure neccessary to keep the whole cat mostly immobile (the biter was a large mean one of my moms cats who I gotta practically straddle). Also use whatever finger pressure i need to to hold the digit in question still because it they move you can cut to deep. If everything it moves digit an equal force immobilizes it, it will eventually stop for long enough to cut that claw. So its all about control. While I'm trimming I also play music for cats (it has noises of kitten suckling and ones so high only cats can hear) or i talk to cat about what I'm doing in a soothing high voice; to reassure it. Though if it buck's sometimes I will yell a sharp deep voice briefly to scare it. Most importantly I never let my emotional or kinetic energy get upset or "jangly" I just try to communicate from my being a sort of patient inevitable dominance and I to myself I just agree that I will do what I must until it's done. It took me alot of practice tries to get to be that way though.
my polydactul cat quite often is tugging on a nail with its teeth, I finally found out what is going on, its like a circle, circling into her pad and penetrating it, my dad said to clip it with some dog nail clippers...he used to have the problem with dogs dew claws he says and do it himself, I wonder if I could cut it mid circle, seems like there would be an nerve. I wonder what they charge to get a claw removed. Dont want it to get infected, seems painful I should probably cut it, just scared. ide like to sedate her somehow, shes a sweet gentle cat, hate her in pain.
Like what? I wrap the death burrito, apply some pressure to stop it standing up, basically trap it under my arm pit while sort of laying on it and retrieve an arm for snippin. He just forces it out while twisting, like he’s freaking out so hard he’d rather twist his arm off. Otherwise he’s a cool cat, takes a bath without freaking out.
Thank you doc. My 6 month old is a cross between a flying squirrel and Wolverine (x-men). He loves to fly and climb onto my bare back when I get out of the shower. Not fun for me physically or my coworkers mentally when I walk in with the back of my shirt soaked in blood. I could only trim 1 claw at a time and get slashed and they would grow back as soon as I got them all!
Hilarious video. Cat covered just enough to soothe "the savage beast" who is not that aggressive at all because he is not completely covered & gets only moderate security treatment. LOL. I was tired of Banfield playing games with my cat's claws avoiding one or two & causing both of us extra stress & too much money & too many unnecessary stressful trips so I finally got ALL the front claws trimmed FOR THE FIRST TIME by putting her in between my legs on the carpet of the living room after attempting to cut just a few in bed a few weeks ago & another time while she was kneading a carpet. I think the sound I heard all the way through was her growling!--a much softer lighter pitched growl, but yes, I believe them were growls! LOL. No aggression toward me--I got all of the front claws trimmed even the dew claws with Necoichi Purrcision Feline Cat Nail Clippers Stress-Free . Next are the hind paw claws. Not ready yet. LOL But I always enjoy watching this just for fun. More funny than instructive? hmm
All these cats in the how-to videos just lay there pretty as you please and allow the human to do whatever they need to. And then down in the comments are we folks in the real world with squirming, bolting masses of claws and teeth.
Yup
So why are you trying to trim a feral cat's claws again?
Holypickle my cat isn't feral and he gets VERY aggressive whenever I touch his nails. I've had him since a kitten and even though in this video the cat was upset, she never bolted or kicked nor was she overly aggressive about it.
Aphro mine too, there needs to be a cushioned box to put the cat in with four holes for its legs so its nails can be cut
"So why are you trying to trim a feral cat's claws again?"
Have some self-respect and delete your stupid comment
this is the calmest cat i've ever seen. a true fractious doesn't just sit there growling but is trying to tear u to pieces the first hint of a table and blanket
I know someone who's cat got banned at a groomer. Too feisty!

@@monimik3572 my cat is like that, we literally cant cut her nails
Yuup. Mine is named Stormy for many reasons 😅❤️🇨🇦
@@VeterinarySecrets my cat got banned by the groomer too 😅😅 she was 18 at the time but funnily enough she let me cut her nails
@Andrew Parrish thanks your comment will help me!
Thank You.
I hope that will work with my cat. Thanks for the tip!
my cat acts out even more now when wrapped in a blanket. tried it tonight and he swatted at both my face and my roommates face and we’re scratched up now. the vet isn’t very fond of him either. i feel so stuck, i have no idea how to get him to tolerate nail trims.
Also give your cat a treat after session, that help the cat to be less aggressive & associate with something positive after grooming ends.
I literally typed in the search box "how to trim a demonic cats' nails" not gonna lie
Oh that is funny!
I can relate!👿☠👹
We all
I have to take 2 of my former feral cats to TNR (trap neuter release) places that deal with feral cats on a daily basis because regular vets just end up getting bit/scratched...I need to see a someone demo how to catch a feral cat in your house and then try to give it a pill and trim their nails and not die in the process.
I think you found the right video ;-)
This video is so helpful! My cat didn't allow me to get close to her nails but they've grown way too long and caused problems (e.g. get stuck in fabrics, toys and carpet and make her panick).. I wrapped her up like a burrito with a cat head like instructed and the struggles were less fierce and violent!!! She just protested by whining and making the same noise your cat did in the video, but I still managed to cut all her nails and now she's happily enjoying her treats :3 Thank you so much for this video!!
Thank You!
My cat scratched me on my leg.
The doc would be in need of a blood transfusion in 30 secs if he tried that with my cat.
OK
My cat is 5 months old and that video is nothing compare to how she can hurt you. My cat needs to be clamped on in a shop.
lol.. I think the doctor is super calm and maybe that helps a lot!?
I thought that about my cat but she was super calm with my vet, I was like ????????? wtf
khawla yeah the vet said that, it’s due to the fact that they’re in an unfamiliar environment i think
i came here because my cat tried to kill me earlier for trimming his nails.
Same
Same here. Mine are rescues so those claws were once their only way to assure survival. Maybe that’s why they panic.
Yep...me too!
I have a 3 almost 4 month old, and I am training him one nail at a time. I have trouble exposing the nail fast enough before he quickly pulls his leg! I let him work on a small plastic cap with wet food, seems to help distract...for one second. 😂
Cat: grooooowlllll grrrrrowwwwlll grooowwwllllllll"
Vet: "Oh yes what a nice cat"
Cat: ggggrrrrrroooowwwwlllllllllllllll
Sitting here watching this with a 7 inch scratch on my arm,I got his claws trimmed but man is he strong and I always end up with atleast one bad scratch or bite.I have never met a cat who is worse than mine during nail trims. He is the sweetest most loving boy in the world but during nail trims he suddenly transforms and seems to summon demons who give him super human strength, ruthlessness and ninja like reflexes,I sure hope this method works.I am going to try it for next time..Thank you.

Do they make blankets of thick leather??????? or maybe even chain mail? Maybe the sleeve of a shark suit would work........
Kevlar Knight suit
laughing
out
loud
a shark suite would be perfect!!
Lmao!!
Doesn't matter WHAT it's made out of....you still have to get the cat IN it! LOL
That's a good idea.
Thank you. I noticed my kitten is very calm for a few minutes after napping. I never really thought of that. Great advice.
Thanks Doc. Finally, a realistic video of how it usually goes when we try to trim cat's nails - always a struggle.
She's so angry but at the same time so calm, like not attacking or anything
I just love hearing the cats growling the entire time while he keeps calm lol
Cat just lays there. Now, what do I do about a cat that nearly tries to break his own neck to get out of towel restraint when trying to give ear mite drops.
same
I get it. Otherwise, one of the loviest kittens ever but man does he hate to be groomed.
Impressed by the term fractious. I confess that I had to look it up. Most doctors can’t write a grammatically correct sentence with proper punctuation. This must be why veterinarian school is more difficult to get into than medical school. Color me impressed.
My cat would never lay still like that. She can get herself out of a blanket & go wild. She's otherwise friendly. I don't know what to do:(
same :(
What I do is when they are dead asleep, i slowly creep up and clip one nail at a time..it takes like 2weeks lmaoo
My cat ran away when I tried this :-(
hahaha too funny. When you are done with the last nail, time to start all over again
How many people are sitting here watching this with scratches and blood dripping hoping for advice and better luck next time?! lol
Thank you so much!! FINALLY was able to trim my cat's nails. After being all wrapped up in a cozy blanket, he didn't protest so much.
You're welcome, that's great to hear:)
I feel better about myself knowing there are cats that growl like that even when their person is an expert. My cat is so friendly he would never growl at me - but he's still too feisty for me to clip his claws by myself.
My cat would be lashing out, spitting, would be off tat table in a flash
I tired this and it works, I just did it 5 minutes before writing this. Thank you for this video so much, I finally found something that works when cutting her nails on my own.
I'm happy to hear that.
This is far from a fractious cat! I've had ones that do more than growling and hissing but full on swatting and charging. Those are fractious!
Hi,
Some cats are especially fearful, and he may be one of them.
Gussy's bark is worse than her bite. Despite all the growling - she very obviously LOVES Dr Jones very much.

I really hope this work. Our loveable Siamese is very difficult to trim and my vet is going to start charging me $42.50 to trim Joey’s nails. This is their newest charge for 2019 now, up from $20 last year. I hope this technique works. You are very calming. I will try to be just like you! 💕💕

she scratched me when I tried earlier but I followed your instruction and covered her head so she could not bite me and I had her wrapped up in a ball with one paw out and it took less than a minute.
I've just done one front paw for now , shall let her calm down and do the others later

This is by far the best video about cat nail trimming. Other videos just show the calm cats that don't move and easily done trimming. But honestly most cat don't like it and start growling
Covering her head may do the trick. I've been searching endlessly for a good trick to fix my cats one very long nail :-) Gonna try it now, thanks !
update, please.

OMG -IT WORKED!!! I'm so surprise and grateful! Thank you SO MUCH! I have a cat like yours and it's been extremely hard to cut her nails. Maybe I'd get one paw at a time.
She kept hissing at me but didn't fight me (this time)
I managed to trim 3 of her claws on her left hand. I let her go and she raced away to hide..
I felt like I really accomplished something major. Until I realized I have another hand to go ! 😩... She did good though. We'll try the other hand tomorrow.. wish me luck
This was helpful, thank you for posting! My cat Sassy is also 17 and gets quite fussy when I trim her nails, so this is a lot of help. :)
Hi Beth,
You are welcome
A vet has come out with a swaddling wrap since this video was posted which looks very promising. It can be used for nails, exams, subq and many other procedures. Does cost about $120 but will definitely be worth it if you do a lot of procedures or have multiple cats that need restraints.
Ngl its good sometimes my cat keep trying to bite me like SWEETIE WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR OLD SELF she even scratch me so i buyer myself some veteranian gloves but this is 100% good
Funny 😆
If she will not let me do them between now and two weeks I will take her to the vet, I bet they will thank me for doing the front ones lol!
holy crap this actually worked 😭😭 my girl was struggling so much but being a burrito subdued her somewhat to get those nails trimmed. thank you!!!!!!!
You're welcome
Finally a video with a normal cat that hates the process. My cat snapped at me like a shark, so i have to wear leather work gloves.
One of my cat's gets super uncomfortable and scratchy whenever I'm trying to cut her nails. This worked so well!! Thank you for sharing!
That's great to hear
hahahah love her grumbling during the whole process
Thank you for this. Very helpful. I would have really liked to have seen a close up of the actual nail trimmers you used and a before and after shot of the nail. I’m viewing on a phone so a close up helps.
Welcome
this is a very cooperative cat. if i tried this with my cat, she would thrash her way out of the blanket in 1 second and i would probably be in the hospital getting blood transfusions. i'm not an expert by any means, and every cat is different, but i'm gonna share some tips that help me trim the nails of my difficult cat (she is the sweetest kitty you can imagine usually, incredibly affectionate and friendly even towards complete strangers, but when you try to trim her claws she behaves like a banshee with rabies):
-don't expect to be able to do it all in one take. i can usually get one or two claws done in one sitting, maybe a full paw if she's feeling especially cooperative.
-treats will help gain back the cat's affection
-i personally find that sitting down and holding the cat in place between my thighs works pretty well for me. wrapping my cat's hindquarters in a towel or blanket helps with cutting the front claws (it doesn't restrain very well, but it usually keeps her from bunny kicking for the time it takes to cut one or two of her front claws). for the back claws, i take it one at a time and Pray.
Thank you for the tips:)
No tutorial on the internet will ever prepare me for cutting my cats nails 😂
My cat is so mean the groomers banned her
I also know someone whose cat got banned in 3 establishments.
He hit my blood vessel and*
*my hand is swollen and throbbing. ONE scratch..It felt like a fish hook in my*
*hand. errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.*
*Trying this method tonight.*
I wouldn't be going back to that veterinarian!
Yes but what do you do when the cat transmogrifies into a crocodile?
This cat is an angel... let's re-do the video with mine.
That's what I'm thinking 😂
Do you have a link for the scissors (or whatever you call them)? Thank you!
Oh thank you... I have a very difficult kitty. It will be a real challenge trimming her nails.
What is the preferred angle I need to be trimming my cats claws..??
This is perfect. Short and sweet. I had just enough time to paint some newskin on the back of my hand and learn a better way to trim the nails. Cheers!
That's great to hear, glad you like it.
Gussie is quite unhappy with being manipulated. Love her guttural growl.
Welcome
Looking at the comments, I'm so glad I'm not the only one struggling with a pet cat.
You are definitely not alone.
That’s a very mellow cat. My cat would have jumped off the table long time ago
Yes can be especially challenging
Let me just say that after numerous hours of researching I was about to give up. But by the grace of God 🙏😘 😅 I found your channel and let me just say you're content regarding more holistic loving care and actual real approaches on vet. Care for animals much like this video here has saved me and my cat 😊❤ thank you for all the hard work time & dedication you've passionately put in helping animals and their parents
You're very welcome! ❤️
My precious cat had for 15 years (RIP boy) was brilliant and got in routine of when I would cut my nails he would wait patiently and then I would sit him in my laps and cut his nails.....oh I still miss him so much😻
However my kitten have had for a year now thinks he's a pittbull and his nails (as cat owners know) are like fine tip burning needle heads, and I just finding it impossible to try and cut and they need to be trimmed!!
Help...anyone???
The patient ones are rare
Hmmm...doing it after you clip your nails might work for my boy. He only has back claws. The previous owner declawed his front paws - I got him at a shelter when he was 5. He doesn't go outside so that's ok but he does Not like me to even touch his back paws. Thanks for the tip.
My cat immediately starts to wiggle around and ferociously claw and bite me so although this video is great when it comes to the process of timming a cat's nails, it does little to help me learn how to control the cat for the trimming to take place! But thanks for an otherwise wonderful video!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hahahahaha! your comments are so funny! The cat in the video is complaining but I think the vet has enough experience and animals can sense it.
When I saw the title I thought this cat was going to be a little hellion. More like annoyed or irritated, not fractious.
No offense intended Doc, but that IS NOT a feisty cat. That is not a happy cat, and she's getting madder by the second, but "feisty" in my book includes a lot of flailing limbs and twisting torsos. Gussie is downright precious in comparison to our cat!
:-)
Wow, all that growling and she just sits still. 😻
:-)
The cat is growling the whole time and hissed once, but never tried to get away ... probably he realizes that he's going to lose the battle with the human, so may as well just suck it up and get the ordeal over with.
Thanks for sharing this! I have 2 cats. My female cat will cooperate and let me at least get her front nails done. The male cat gets a little on the ugly side so I wrapped his butt in a blanket today and managed to get his nails clipped...however he wasn't fond of any of the nail clipping experience lol. Thought it was funny when the vet said Happy New Years to you too. =)
Welcome
How about doing this then placing a muzzle on before trimming?
A blanket. Never thought of that. I usually do this only during hours when urgent care is open Will try this method with my two feisties 😄
Let me know how it goes!

His cat it already chill my cat tries to kill me even in a blanket
Ok but the cat isn’t kicking and pulling away every time it feels the clipper. What do you do when that happens?
Use moderate restraint
Just the video I needed. Thanks so much for putting it together.
Sir, my cat has knives not claws..pls help me
Mine too please help somebody😫
More funny than instructive? hmm
Thanks
Poor lil ki-ki-mow. Life's tough sometimes. But she's taking it like a champ.
She absolutely did:)
I just watched Steve Erwin make a cat restraint tutorial.
