    Just a little tip. Instead of pulling on the paw and pulling it away from their body, kinda get behind them, and hold their paw closer to the body. It's just as easy to access, and helps relax them. I saw that tip somewhere on another video and it works great

    • @PaulFisherMedia
      @PaulFisherMedia 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My girl kitty is super finicky even this way she isn’t having it, what do I do

    • @allentig
      @allentig 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@PaulFisherMedia if that doesn't help, then kinda try what the dog whisperer does. Get the cat exhausted first. When it gets the zoomies and runs a lot, or if you have a routine to play with them, do that till they are too tired to play anymore. Then, feed them and wait about 5 minutes for them to get relaxed and ready to rest or sleep. Then try it again, keeping their paws close to their body as best you can.
      Another thing is find the position you think works best, then use that position daily when they want to be petted. Get them used to you always holding them that way and make it an enjoyable experience. Also after holding them that way daily and petting, give them a treat

    • @allentig
      @allentig 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@PaulFisherMedia also to help get them exhausted, you can use a little good quality catnip. I discourage regular use of catnip, and don't let them see where you keep it because they will hang out there and cry till you give them some. Do not worry about being perfect at trimming. When new at it, just focus on the sharp point removal only. Do not worry about trimming as far as you can without hurting them, just stay focused on trimming the sharp point off. In time you will get better

    I’ve always found the scissors-style clippers to be most useful. The ones I use most often are at least 10 years old and I have no idea where I got them. I also have a pair from Safari that seem to work well. They are so small and maneuverable so I can work quickly and accurately.
    RE: Miller’s Forge. I have a set of the large clippers that I’ve used for my dogs for years. It’s simple and straightforward, and I’ve had no issues with them. That said, I can see where this smaller version has issues.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Snowpuppies, I bet a lot of the people praising the Millers Forge are using the larger ones. The bulk of the issues do seem to be affecting the small size.

    This was super helpful. I’ve had a tiny scissor type clipper for years that works really well. Recently I bought a similar type so I can have one on each floor of the house (to take advantage of when my cats are relaxed on my lap) but the new one just splits their nails badly. I might order that Safari one, I didn’t know they came with safety guards! I’m always so afraid of cutting into the quick. Thanks for the video!

    I really like the ZenClippers, I use the smaller version where you choose the hole size, I got medium which is a 2mm hole. I would recommend these for people who maybe can’t see as well or if say your clipping claws in an evening when your cat is sat with you and the light is poor. You can only fit a small amount of claw through the hole so it’s impossible to cut too much and there’s no adjusting or anything to do. I think the medium 2mm size would work for most adult cats, larger cat breeds might want the next size up.

    Such an important topic when the need arises. Millie just cost us over $500 at the vet because she damaged her bottom lip. I think it was her trying to pull off her old prickly nails. (Not proven) Our nail clippers is horrible. I cannot see what I am doing with a steel shield in front. And it is lumpy for my petite hands. Sharp, simple, easy to use and seeable. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

    Thank you for another informative video, Mallory. I’ll look for the first one you reviewed. Is it good for arthritic hands and fingers?
    My cat can’t stand having his nails clipped. Even with two of us holding him, he still fights us. I bring him to Tractor Supply (they have a vet, etc every Sat, 4-5:30pm). But it went from $20 last year, to $33 this year. Yikes! (When my cat visits the vet for any reason, I ask if they can include a mani-pedi.)
    I’m taking my cat with me to our own apartment in a couple of months. I’m hoping the lowering of stress (for both of us…my reason for moving) will make it easier to do it myself.

    I've used Bamboo brand cat nail scissors since 2011 that comes with styptic powder to stop bleeding if you do accidentally cut into the quick and a small file on the side of that. Thankfully I've never cut into the quick, and prefer this style so I can see how far the nail protrudes before clipping.

    When our vet asked whether I wanted him to clip Huehue’s nails, I asked, “Would this be for my benefit or HH’s?” For me, he said. So I never clip his nails. Vet did say to watch his due/do/dew claws because they *might* twist into his skin left untended. He leaves claw sheaths around. By the way, he does claw furniture a bit, but the furniture is his, so what the hey. My two cents.

    Please review the Zen Nail Clippers, because they are better than any of the ones you reviewed! I love them! I was mortified about cutting my cat's nails because I already had 2 different vets accidentally cut the quick and now my cat is terrified of vets! It has a hole in it that will not fit the entire cat's nail into, so you can't accidentally cut the quick. You can write to them and have them send you a card that has the different sizes they make with holes already punched out, which you see which one your cat (or dog) fits perfectly into, before you buy one. I think everyone should know about it, so please add that to your reviews!

    If you notice about the safaris a problem I have and probably because she is still a kid but I do believe she’s not gonna get much bigger is that the thickness of the actual blade I know the very end were cut is thin however when I’m putting her nail in from one side to the other both of the blades are thick and so it’s very hard to not get close to her quick I do trim her nails every week with her bath she is extremely easy to do her nails she’s been having them done so she’s a baby and as you know stinks kittens you have to actually take their paws full back the skins and push back on on the nails make sure they’re clean so the nail is fully extended I do find that the clippers with the little curve outing and the preventative back so that he doesn’t go all the way through a very difficult to work with especially for the dewclaws and I am left-handed so that makes a difference to agree that scissors for humans and milk uppers for humans are definitely not appropriate kitty they just start chopping off just like you wouldn’t want to use sheepshearers to give is little boy a fade
    Just a question are you believe to the all the clippers they’re just so big and bulky in your hand to even get them close to the little kitty paw when you have to extend the cats like so far out in order to have access to the one little Tony all the time I Use the tiny little ones with no safety they have little curved very sharp blade they kind of just fit right on the tips of your fingers however I believe that they’re a little thick too in the blade I don’t think yet I found a great cutting device that I feel totally comfortable with that I don’t second-guess myself every time

    I have a problem, my cat used to let me trim her nails but now she doesn't want me to at all. Now I never cut into the quick at all, only the tips of the nails. Could it be the type of nail clippers that I'm using that's causing her to not want me to cut her nails? I noticed they don't cut so cleanly to so I'm guessing it's the type of nail clippers. Can getting a different type of clipper make her maybe allow her to clip her nails?

      Just make sure the BLADES are facing vertically NOT horizontally as human clippers are used. Clipper should b us d VERTICALLY; OPPOSITE if human nail clippers. According to vets, holding the clipper horizontally is asking for problems and reason cats FEAR trimming. We humans are just using clipper bass-ackwards!

      I have a really hard time imagining a typical cat feeling comfortable in one of those. Maybe if you have a very docile cat like this: th-cam.com/users/shorts0OHh5CFRUFc?feature=share

They are used for the same purpose and if you are trying to trim a cat’s nails yourself. She also trims her cat’s nails by holding him on her lap (the docile one). My cat is very affectionate but not a lap cat so keeping her on my lap for nail trim is challenging.

    The ZenClipper is far superior to any of the clippers in your video. They come in many sizes and prevent you from over clipping. After using other types of clippers these are the best and safest in my opinion. You may need two or three different sizes as you cat grows from kitten to adult. Start with the XXS and go bigger in size as needed depending on your cats claw growth.

      Have you tried the Safari? I am undecided between the Safari and the ZenClipper. Clipping my cat's nails stresses me out so much because I am terrified of hurting them should they suddenly jerk or move abruptly while I am clipping them, so a safety feature is so
      important to me. I don't see how on the ZenClipper there is a safety feature which prevents over-clipping.

    • @sarahinsf
      @sarahinsf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertsimmons6467 I don't have the Zen Clipper Adjustable Nail Clipper but it would work by your constricting the opening -- the narrower the opening, the more limited you are in how far you can move the clipper up towards the base of the cat's claws 🙂

    • @Aw_tig
      @Aw_tig ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I have the ZenClipper scissor type ones, that just have the little hole to slip the claw into, they are great as the hole only lets that small amount of claw through. Obviously you need to try to figure out your cats claw size first, but I went with the 2mm medium size which I think would work well for most cats, I don’t like to trim too much off anyway just the tip that gets sharp.

    I will tell you with the Miller's Forge clippers, there is nothing more scary or dangerous than when the middle piece, the "spiral spring" suddenly pops out of place while you're clipping your cat's nails. I like Miller's Forge products in general, I've used them for probably almost 40 years, but these clippers are a no no. All of the points you made Mallory, plus let me add my own personal experience. If the handles suddenly expand, then I've had that steel spring come flying out towards my face, etc not to mention how it totally scared my cats and control o over the nail session was lost for that day. This is a safe issue I'm surprised the company hasn't addressed as well the safety points you brought out. 😒
    I like Jorgensen and have used their surgical precision nail clippers for years. My last pair of clippers lasted me 20+ years. They have several models to choose from. These are what my vet uses in the office.
    (I just replaced my clippers and I believe they were somewhere around $10.99... don't remember for sure, but within a dollar of that price. I order directly from the company, they are a veterinary medical supply company, one part sells to the public and the other only to professionals/,veterinarians)

    I have had my cat for like 7 years and have never had to cut her nails! Folks can google it. I think it's more for people's convenience! I have plenty of cardboard scratchers etc and things for her to scratch on keeps nails buffed and they won't wanna claw up stuff they are not supposed to.

      I don't do my cat's often. Even though they shed the sheath part, they can still get caught in furniture. It happened when my cat was using her cat tree 🌳 It got caught in the fabric I helped release the claw.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the sheaths of the nails will shed normally, but the tips will still be pointed. The idea of trimming is to make the tips blunt. If those claws don't affect furniture or anything else, I'd agree that there's no point in trimming!

  • @KoiraStar
    @KoiraStar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I clip my cat's nails every two weeks, and my dog's get done weekly. I use the red handled Miller's Forge for my dog, because the sharpness of the blade makes all the difference in being able to get a good clean cut. My cat I do with human nail clippers, turned so that they don't crush the nail.
    Using the "nail guard" is not good advice. The amount of nail that can go through the clipper up to that nail guard is longer than your dog or cat's nails should be past their quick, and relying on that is a good way to guarantee you will cut into the quick. If you can use the nail guard without quicking your cat or dog, you aren't keeping their nails properly trimmed.

    It seems we are ALL using these clippers wrong! Supposed to use clipper VERTICALLY not horizontally as ALL vids show and vets keep telling us to clip with clipper in vertical position so claw nail is cut side to side NOT up and down as we use on human nails. Just think of the shape of claw and u will see that horizontal would only separate layers of nail. Used VERTICALLY clipper cuts claw by blades meeting east to west; OPPOSITE of human nail clippers.
