Biden trading hats was actually a good thing in that situation. It showed a Trump supporter that Biden had a sense of humor, and that people from different sides can actually get along.
Absolutely! Imagine the Victim in Chief doing that?? it was funny and did a great job of diffusing the situation. Maher does a great job of comedy...WHEN he has a script in front of him.
I also thought it was good politicking. Although the other guy definitely came out ahead. He got an official Presidential hat with the President's seal on it, and Joe Biden even signed it for him. Joe got a crappy run-of-the-mill MAGA hat.
It's obvious that Bill and his guests didn't watch the whole video of Biden putting on the hat. It was a sweet moment. The guy was heckling him and he diffused it by making a joke, then the guy asked for his autograph and Biden ended up putting the hat on as a way of reaching over the aisle. You would never see that kind of sportsmanship from the other side.
Exactly. Biden did what Maher told Democrats they needed to do, respect the Trump voter cause they represent a big percentage of the population. Biden played to the crowd just like Maher would have done during one of his shows. In isolation, I'm sure the photo looked bad. Watching the video, my respect for Biden grew even more.
I rather have lack of sportsmanship than wars and censorship. I hardly like both parties but for sure Democrats lost their minds on the two topics above.
The reason why there is a 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars is because if they were allowed to be sold in the U.S. at 20k each, everyone (including me) would buy one and it would gut the U.S. auto manufacturers causing thousands of people to lose their jobs.
Exactly. It's not hard to figure out. They can make and ship the car here through slave wages, no environmental regulations, and govt support, at 100% less than than it can be made here. So, you put the tariff on to make the cost the same with the idea that given the choice between an American car and a Chinese car at the same price people would likely choose the American, yet they are free to buy the other if they choose unless the importer wants to eat all or a portion of the tariff. I work on the steel industry and it is necessary because foreign governments dump steel in this country at below cost. If tariffs were not in place, our industry would close, Americans would have cheaper product until we closed, and then the foreign makers would raise their prices with no competition. Tariffs on selected items being dumped with domestic manufacturing capacity competition work. Trumps blanket tariff proposal is a disaster waiting to happen because we don't make those goods here anymore, you can't just flip a switch and start making them here, so the importer is just going to pass along that cost because the consumer doesn't have a choice. The fact his supporters think the foreign government is going to pay it is laughable.
This. Tariffs on different goods/industries have different domestic effects. Maher is awfully reductionist in this thinking here and shame on Franken for not being intellectually equipped to counter it in front of a television audience.
And I hate when his trained seals laugh at things that aren't intended to be funny, don't sound funny, and no one on earth (except the trained seals) laughs at.
What Sarah Palin really said was "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.” Tina Fey’s satire was genius, though.
She's also said enough really dumb or ignorant things to allow a pass to anyone who thinks she really said it. She didnt say this nugget, but she's said so many others.
Brilliant? Propaganda for stupid people delivered by actors that are paid on the basis of how good they are at pretending to believe what they are saying. .... pretty much the same thing that "journalists" have become.
There isn't enough light refraction to see any part of the Russian mainland from the closest Alaskan island. Tina Fey's satire was perfect to illustrate that point.
10:25 I strongly disagree with Bill's point here. Since leaving the race, Biden has been making jokes about "being out of a job soon." Never would he have put a MAGA hat on if were still the candidate, but he's not so he's having fun with the people before having to leave.
I thought it was a funny moment that showed the side of Biden we used to see when he was more spontaneous, which is what made him endearing. ‘Scrappy Joe’ has always been known for his gaffes. My only issue now is that this moment has somehow fueled a conspiracy theory that Biden actually dislikes Kamala and the Democrats. Interestingly, Trump brought this up during the debate, claiming ‘Biden hates her.’ I don’t believe it’s true, but I worry it could make low-information voters second-guess their already hesitant support for Kamala.
It’s clear bill didn’t watch the Biden incident with the hat because in the context in which he did it it made sense. It was a funny moment and shows why he is truly a good man
I agree: it was a very old-school campaign move, like kissing a baby or eating a corn dog at the state fair for the cameras. Bill's full of it again, every so often.
@@1247.cccccc Agree. Unfortunately, he's not the only pundit I no longer care to watch. It's not about Trump-love, but lack of comedic value; it's just not funny.
Tariffs make domestic products more attractive. If a tariff is put on Italia olive oil, it becomes more expensive, hence olive oil from California becomes more attractive. But the tariff is paid by the consumer, not the Italian Government. Trump''s tiny brain can't seem to absorb this.
Tariffs have a very good purpose. Most countries have got a major problem on their hands where they've allowed places like China and India to take over almost all of their goods and manufacturing purely because it is cost effective. If you add tariffs it can make it more cost effective to buy local and stop this ridiculous dependency on foreign nations. The US especially should not be relying on China, a potential enemy, for every day items. Now is Trump wrong for how he described the situation? Yes. China doesn't pay the tariff. But it results in less trade for China so it does cost them money. If you want less money in China's pocket and more business generation in the US, then the tariffs are a good thing.
@@dragonrings14 The tarrifs are 100% why things cost more now and your paycheck doesn't go as far. The US relys on China and other places for just about everything consumers buy and the companies aren't going to eat it so it gets passed on and hurts the lower and middle class. If you think tariffs help with competition all the parts and tools and raw materials those US car manufacturers and other industries use are made in China and so again the costs of everything goes up. Additionally the parts that are used and the things that are manufactured in China and elsewhere are usually toxic and hazardous to workers so I don't know if even having those jobs in the US are healthy.
I’m sorry, but I don’t think the Maga hat thing was a big deal. I thought it was a really human moment that showed that Biden can still interact with the public in a very human way.

A 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars means that they wont be sold in the US, it's a completely different situation than just slapping a 20% tariff on all goods...the Chinese electric cars are so much cheaper than US made electric vehicles. It would undercut the US market so much so that it probably wouldn't be profitable to make EVs in the US to compete on price. So what does that mean? US companies would just outsource EVERYTHING to foreign factories and labor to compete with the cost. It's protecting US manufacturing of EVs...which will hopefully eventually pay off in the long run as the manufacturing ramps up and adoption of EVs gets higher. Costs will come down for EVs overtime when there is more supply. With the general goods tariff...that's not going to prevent companies from importing goods. They are just going to jack the price up 20% and probably more because of corporate greed. They'll say we have to raise prices because of tariffs and then further increase prices to gouge consumers. Just like what we saw with the inflation nonsense (which to remind anyone reading this...companies are being prosecuted for this currently, ex: the egg industry).
You explained that well, a 20% tariff on all goods would cause massive inflation for consumers and the tariffs Trump put on did contribute to inflation. But I disagree w/ the 100% tariff on EVs, maybe 30% which would and should cause US automakers to not gouge their customers, and ease a huge cost to consumers who may want a $15k EV.
Came here to say that. People can buy 100% marked up Chinese EVs, but almost none will, certainly not mass adoption. One is a tax, passed on to the consumer The other is a market deterrent Neither works very well
Hear you. Seems that "tariff's" aren't good or bad, in and of themselves, but the rationale for EACH and ANY tariff must be considered. This doesn't happen, as Bill correctly, imo, points out herein, and instead: Trump=Tariff=Bad, is a ridiculous generalization, as we're unaware of up and downstream effects of each tariff. We're not going anywhere by US and THEM'ing everything with generalizations, except in the same direction. This course seems a bad one, imo.
I thought it was dumb to put the hat on too but then I watched the clip and it was very wholesome showed that the old politician still got it. He played to the room. It was the best he looked in months lol.
Yes, besides that it was just for a moment and he put on top of the hat he was wearing. Probably threw it in the trash later but at least that's one less maga hat on someone's head.
Biden’s tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) aims to counteract the subsidies provided by the Chinese government, making Chinese EVs less price competitive compared to US-made EVs. In contrast, Trump’s tariff applies to a wide range of Chinese-made everyday products. Since US companies do not manufacture many of these everyday items, American consumers often have no choice but to purchase Chinese-made products, including those with the added tariff. As a result, Americans are bearing the cost of Trump’s tariff, not the Chinese government.”
Funny isn't it? This was supposed to be about trump's lying about tarrifs. Who cares about cars coming in from China? Biden isn't out there lying about the tarrifs.
I was an independent oil producer and oil production takes tons and tons and tons of steel pipe and steel rods to produce the oil from the wells, 15-20k lbs of steel or more per well. The vast majority of this affordable steel was coming out of China and it was making it economically possible to squeeze out more oil from older depleted fields. It really screwed things up for us as the costs for pipe and rods doubled or tripled or more. Now most of my wells are not running and the projects I had planned on bringing online were abandoned. There are many products and situations where the tariffs increase costs so much it basically kills demand because there practically no other source for the product.
MAGA hat is the new symbolic "Swastika" sign? History will decide how good or bad? The Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of hate, and it's still doing well in U.S.

A 20% tariff on a TV is NOT the same as a 50-100% tariff on a car. Tariffs are designed to make the trade less viable and therefore less likely to happen. They are being imposed not to raise revenue but to defend American industry.
@@markfeland2285 not true. Chinese EV companies are heavily subsidized by state capital and then dumped overseas to undermine global competitors. The WTO recommends tariffs as the way to combat State sponsored capitalism.

Losing the automobile industry is traditionally considered a national security issue. THAT is why we have a tariff on Chinese eclectic cars. Tariffs are not ALL good or all bad. They are, a best, a surgical tool to use in trade policy on a case-by-case basis. Damn, this country is stupid.
I miss Al Franken. He's suffered enough and I'm sure he learned whatever lesson he was supposed to, Minnesota please elect Al. He may or may not be a horndog, but as a Senator, he was good for the people.
I love Franken, but his explanation here stops short. Yes, if there is a tariff, TVs from China would become more expensive and that extra cost would be put upon consumers. But that ISN'T the final goal of tariffs. With the increase in price, people would stop buying TVs that are made in China and would buy TVs made either in the U.S. or other countries that are not hostile to the U.S. Tariffs exist to protect U.S. companies and jobs from being undercut by countries who can produce things far cheaper.
Hostility has nothing to do with it. It's a lot more keeping some manufacturing ability in the US, so we are not totally dependent on some foreign country for cars, batteries, chips, or whatever. Just look at the sorry situation in Russia right now: They can't get their latest jet fighters into service because all their aeronautics came from Ukraine!
Exactly. It’s almost as if he deliberately avoided that part of his definition: tariffs will reduce the amount of product bought; the higher the tariff, the less is imported. If you want to protect or revitalise domestic production, tariffs do have a role to play.
The problem is that Trump claims he will use the dollars earned from tariffs collected from China to pay for programs. Consumers will pay the tariffs, so this fits the definition of a tax on the American people

Here's a thought: Biden may have put a 100% tariff on Chinese cars to PREVENT them from being sold here in the states. Which in turn helps American car companies to be able to build cars here AND sell them at decent prices to Americans instead of selling them at higher prices due to a 100% tariff.
Also it will probably lead to Chinese automakers having to build the cars here that they sell here. Much like how European, Japanese, and Korean automakers have. Some countries even make laws that foreign cars sold in their countries have to use a certain percentage of parts made in their own country.

@@JJ-nu8qi the idea isn’t tariffs bad, it’s that Trump thinks that the United States has the power to make sovereign nations pay taxes to the US government. Thank you for pointing this out. Tariffs are place on products from places like China because of their unfair labor practices. They pay their employees nothing and the quality of life for the working class in China is terrible. They don’t live in a democracy. So our products may be more expensive but that’s because Americans are paid better wages. This also keeps other countries from killing American competition by always undercutting us.

They don't understand tariffs either, they are protection for domestically produced goods against cheaper foreign imports. They are not a substitute for tax revenue, but by producing and consuming locally you are capturing more tax revenue while also keeping more jobs available for your citizens. Tariffs are necessary to level the playing field in some industries where you could compete with a little government intervention giving you home field advantage.

Isn't the tariff game partly about hoping that the importers who have to pay the tariff will reduce their order from China and US consumers would then be encouraged to look at home-made options because the price would be similar?
Sure but the big problem is for a lot of things there isn’t a US made option. Also a lot of materials to make things still comes from other countries. I was explaining this to a friend the other day at his business. Picking out products that he sells that possibly could be manufactured here but looking at what goes into it how realistic that every component is available from a source here too.
That is one of the original reasons for Tariffs. To protect home industry from being overwhelmed by products from overseas. An example was the steel tariffs' the US put on imported steel. Countries were heavily subsidizing there own steel industry to the point of selling their steel at a loss to corner the market and put the US steelmakers out of business. They were selling the steel at a loss. We put tariffs on the steel so the US steelmakers could fairly compete. Now in the end it is us, the consumers who actually pay the tariffs in higher prices. However with steel it can end up meaning the consumers do not get gouged by the steelmakers overseas. Once they take over the market they can then charge whatever they like. And if you think they will not take advantage of that you would be dead wrong. With the tariffs on electric cars. the Chinese are selling them so cheaply no one else is able to compete. They would also be selling them below cost or heavily subsidized. The reason for those Tariffs is to allow the USA industry the opportunity to compete. BTW look at the Tariffs American made goods that China puts on. Up to 500%
But if implemented incorrectly. It leads to what happened under trump. 1800 major companies left the country. Taking tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs with them. They then produce the product for less and sell it in the US market for its previous price.
@@msvulcanspock I know both of them were joking about each other. The exchange for me didn’t even have any tension, I was smiling all the time watching it.

The basis for the line was Governor Palin's 11 September 2008 appearance on ABC News, her first major interview after being tapped as the vice-presidential nominee. During that appearance, interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, and she responded: "They're our next-door neighbors, and *you* *can* *actually* *see* *Russia* *from* *land* *here* *in* *Alaska,* *from* *an* *island* *in* *Alaska"*

Bill Maher, once one of my favorite comedians, and suddenly is once again. Thank you for pushing Franken to answer that question. People have to stop favoriting their own party.
EZ answer @3:20 When you put a tariff on a product you are increasing its cost to be imported. This has the effect of making locally produced products more affordable in comparison by negating the low-cost factor of imports. If a Chinese EV can be produced and retailed @ 20,000 and say you have 5,000 shipping costs that is 25000 for the vehicle. If a US vehicle is produced and delivered for 40,000 then people will see the sense in saving money and buying Chinese. If you instate a tariff of 100% on Chinese imports then the car costs 20,000 base + 20,00 tariff + 5,000 shipping costs = 45,000. NOW someone who prefers the Chinese car can afford it but US business that must pay US wages isn't under pressure to compete with that extremely low cost. Tariffs can target a specific foreign market as well. We can put a tariff on Chinese EV but not EU EV, so really even if we don't produce it locally this can help fix competition - but still the point is no one is supposed to pay these tariffs. They are there to discourage buying from a specific source by making it "fair" or even prohibitively expensive to buy from them. What makes Trump's concept of a plan so bad is not that he wants to put tariffs on products, its that he wants to put them on senselessly. He's talking about all of the money we're supposedly going to bring in from these tariffs. THAT is not how tariffs work. They are not an income source they are a market manipulation / price fixing strategy. 10:40 while I do agree its good Biden stepped aside - this interaction was a net positive. It showed Joe still has some wits, takes the MAGA comments with stride, and is able to be personable to people even on the other side. Biden having the Maga hat on is going to be a meme, but so are the lines he delivered during that encounter - and they were top notch trolling lol
Slowing sales of Chinese goods by making them more expensive and less popular, increases sales of American goods; THIS IS A GOOD THING FOR THE UNITED STATES.
WRONG. What actually happens is American goods INCREASE in price through price gouging and greed, because there is no reason for american goods to remain cheaper. Go read up on it. Lemme give you a simple example..... If chinese car is $15000, and american car is $20000, normally people would buy the chinese car for $5000 cheaper. But when you slap a 100% tariff on the chinese car, now chinese car costs $30000. Guess what happens to the american car.... they jack up the price from $20000 to $29900. Now you pay extra $9900 for the same crap, for no reason, just because the manufacturer can do it. Tariffs harm the consumer. THIS IS REALITY.
Depends - do we have another producer of these goods? How many iphones are being produced in USA? Probably not very many lol Tariffs aren't an income source, they are a deterrent. They only work if we have a different supplier we want to favor. For Chinese EV's the concept of the tariff is we don't want our auto makers competing with Chinese prices on EV's. We make the EV's here though! With Tesla, Ford, Chevy etc. The production is gone to China, we aren't going to get it back. People aren't going to open up iphone production plants. Broad tariffs on Chinese imports is just a price increase to American consumers.
It’s not that tariffs are good or bad it’s that the when the US places tariffs on imports from other countries, the exporting country doesn’t pay for the tariff. The importing purchaser does
I tried to start an American made company but the price to do so was10 x more expensive than had I go os....and as a start up I didn't have a choice. I looked into Turkey, India, South America and China..I was forced to go to China because all the other countries MOQ was too high for me. Interestingly, 3 of the 6 Indian manufacturing factories were owned by the Chinese. They had built factories there to escape the American tax tarriffs.
Not those exact words. She talked about their proximity and that parts of Russia are visibile from Alaska. SNL brilliantly distilled it to "I can see Russia from my house" and the rest is history

The reason why there is a 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars is because if they were allowed to be sold in the U.S. at 20k each, everyone (including me) would buy one and it would gut the U.S. auto manufacturers causing thousands of people to lose their jobs.
And also mess with Musk's company.
EXACTLY!
If you don't impose tarrifs on chinese made goods, american made products cant compete on price

It’s not that tariffs don’t work, it’s just that they don’t work the way Trump says. Arguably, tariffs can have a purpose.
Tariffs make domestic products more attractive. If a tariff is put on Italia olive oil, it becomes more expensive, hence olive oil from California becomes more attractive. But the tariff is paid by the consumer, not the Italian Government. Trump''s tiny brain can't seem to absorb this.
Biden also never claimed that China is paying for the tariffs.

It doesn't mean they won't be sold...it will deter ppl from buying them because they've been artificially priced higher.
Came here to say that.
People can buy 100% marked up Chinese EVs, but almost none will, certainly not mass adoption.
One is a tax, passed on to the consumer
The other is a market deterrent
Neither works very well
Hear you. Seems that "tariff's" aren't good or bad, in and of themselves, but the rationale for EACH and ANY tariff must be considered.
Just one of many ways that a second term for Donald would be different than the first.
Thanks for explaining this.

Then you would really scream at what things cost.
Japan did this in the 80s and dominated the planet with consumer electronics. Depends on what the situation is and how it is done.

How did China become the great economic engine while being the greatest user of tarriffs?
Thank you for pointing this out. Tariffs are place on products from places like China because of their unfair labor practices. They pay their employees nothing and the quality of life for the working class in China is terrible. They don’t live in a democracy.

Slowing sales of Chinese goods by making them more expensive and less popular, increases sales of American goods; THIS IS A GOOD THING FOR THE UNITED STATES.
Americans can't afford goods made in America anymore.
@@kkp4297 never thought about that being a possibility. Not very patriotic of those CEOs 😡
