The “growling” brought raw emotion into the song. I found it to build on intensity and the “growl” was the climax to the build up. You didn’t just hear the words; you felt the song.
In the last week I've become completely emersed in reaction videos to this cover. The appreciation that professional musicians and vocalists have for is amazing.
I heard it live back in the stone age when this song was just a warning, this performance gradually turns it up to a four alarm disaster alert. It brings tears to my eyes that we have learned so little in these long years.
So overall I like your reaction to this iteration of the song. But I have to push back on the “growl” being a negative aspect in any way at all. If you take off your analysis robe for a moment, go back and listen to the song as a performance of a musical delivering a message and combine the lyrical poetry with the emotional delivery of the song, at the end, you will get that same sort of inner feel similar to when one watches the face of Pavarotti doing Nessun dorma from Turandot in Los Angeles back in 1991 which was one of the greatest vocal performances ever recorded. Pavarotti knew what he had just done and you could see it on his face when he exited that closing pinnacle note. Go back and listen to this again but leave aside what you would like and listen to he entire thing as a collective emotionally dynamic story told with an uncommon urgency. What you may realize is this as well is one of the greatest live performances ever. I truly believe that. Every element of a perfect performance is there but takes it to an entirely different level.
Ya, talk about confused. lol.. The strength of his voice is great and gives most everyone that has heard it, xchills and they absolutely love it. This guy apparently enjoys analytics more than the music itself. shame.
This version gives me goosebumps and chills everytime I hear it!!! And yes his voice is EPIC!! The Instrumentals were amazing!!! If it could bring Simon and Garfunkel to tears, I would think that this group did a phenomenal job with this CLASSIC song!!
I like the direction he went with the growl in the latter part of the song, to me it shows more aggression and frustration of people not listening, the anger as if saying "just shut up and listen to me".
I love how the vocal fry (growl) is used. It is difficult technique that few have mastered to this extent. It was fun to hear it used in a slow song like this. The first time I listened to this song it put me in awe. I replayed the song over for days. Even now years later I search TH-cam for videos of people watching it for the first time as a hobby.
Not all vocalists in metal bands are growling though... I mean, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) certainly isn't growling, Eric Adams (Manowar) doesn't growl nor does Dee Snider. Growling is a singing style used predominately in the Black- and/or Death Metal genres. What David does here certainly isn't growling, not by a country mile. He Is using vocal frying though... and he's utilizing it to perfection, at Exactly the right moments to really drive the message home.
"sounds like Peter Gabriel". Uh... Kinda giving way too much credit to Peter Gabriel. I like some of his stuff too, but he has no where near the range or control that the dude from disturbed does.
i love how about for a minute at the 3:00 mark you just got lost in the song, fingers on lips, unblinking, just enveloped.....thatsong does that to you....powerful
Paul Simon himself put the Video of his Website and said this about: "In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on Conan this week. The S&G cover also appears on Disturbed's latest album, Immortalized." Davids Voice is one of most controled and gifted Voices in our times. The Rasp is very controlled and there are only a view Singers world wide who can do this like this without shredding their Vocal Cords. The S&G Originial is to soft, it wispers the warning for the comming generation. Disturbed make a angry statement, because nobody listen to the lyrics befor seriosly. And so, this Version is on point. Imho is better than the original and one of the- maybe the - best cover ever.
Just here waiting on someone to mention S&G’s version being a warning and this one being rage because the warning was ignored. Someone always says it like it’s their original thought.
IKR! Let's not forget the usual he was sick for this performance ... er had the flu .... no had pneumonia, no it was him on his deathbed! Lol! Another I've been seeing is that he was so sick he had to have a stool to sit on ... no, he always sits when performing ballads in their concerts! 😉😆
Chloe Kennedy it was a great comment the first time it was said. Almost every time I see it, it is presented as an original thought by the commenter. I have seen it mentioned as you said, but only one or two times.
I really dig this version, so -- in spare moments -- I've been searching out reaction videos to it, from regular music fans; vocal coaches; opera singers; and now symphony musicians. Your channel is interesting, in that there's a very different perspective to your critiques. Like, everyone else focuses on "the voice," which is, frankly, understandable, since (a) that's what you'd expect, from a vocal coach or an opera singer; and (b) yeah, of course, the guy's voice is phenomenal. But everyone on your channel focuses on the arrangement, and how the instruments are brought into the performance, and how it might have been enhanced with this-or-that choice. It's fascinating. I subscribed. I hope you guys will continue to do rock and pop songs, even if you limit yourselves to rock and pop songs with orchestral accompaniment. I don't know who "Nightwing" is, and I hope I'm not confessing embarrassing ignorance by saying that, but every other vocal coach and opera singer's channels are filled with Nightwing reactions. I'm sure they're great. But I'm also sure there's an audience for hearing what folks in your profession think of, say, REM, or Solange, or Blood Orange, or Radiohead. So, anyway, really like your channel, and your reactions to this song.
You really need to understand why he did it this way. This is a darker version because Simon meant it as a warning and David sings it like this to show that we did not heed the warning. We are using social media to talk with people instead of really talking and listening to them. We don’t communicate like we should. Go watch the video, that helps understand. I don’t consider him growling or screaming like most Metal” groups. Also David was trained in classical music and also, I believe it’s called a Cantor”? And, he had 102 temperature when he sang that.
I was surprised and I liked the Peter Gabriel comparison offered, had not thought in that direction myself. Peter Gabriel has in the past 25 years worked a lot with alternative instrument arrangements (in Disturbed case, alternative to the original) with keyboards as a base foundation and Gabriel has in recent years toured with an orchestra. I don't think David Draimen's voice sounds like Peter Gabriel's but there was certainly a similarity in arrangement and musical approaches. The song progresses, builds up in intensity at a nice gradual rate until the lyric of pray in which David changes abruptly into a very dramatic vocal Fry. To me, it is intentional to create a shock, a very dramatic dynamic effect, right at a time when the lyrics go to a very serious, very dramatic religious observation and is as such, in my opinion, brilliant. I don't know if I would label Simon & Garfunkel's sound as 'undescriptive', I know what you're trying to say in context but overall, I would describe the "brand" sound of Simon & Garfunkel as extremely recognizable/ descriptive. I enjoyed the reaction, Mr. Tubist!
That smooth transition from the angry rasp back to clear belting on the final long held "sound" lyric that ends with the echo gives me shivers every time. I never made a connection with Peter Gabriel, but after thinking on it, Gabriel has a rasp too. It's just not a metal type of growl or rasp. Gabriel has an odd artsy not quite normal, not quite human rasp just on a few syllables here and there to good effect.
You'll probably not even see this comment after almost a year, but you are totally wrong about the growl. Don't look at it with a "symphony" point of view. The growl was perfect and so much more than the original. It's a sign of the times. S&G were perfect when they made it, but times have changed. David is a classically trained singer, but his group is heavy metal. Open your mind a bit, don't be so closed to something different from classical symphony.
I think it is a great cover done by a metal band. Paul Simon even posted on his Facebook about it how he enjoy ed and he reached out to singer David Draiman and tell him so. From what I understand Paul never mentioned cover of their works before.
If you go check out the music video you see a much more clear build both musically and emotionally that makes the growl more fitting. And it’s a much more powerful rendition overall.
Love Peter Gabriel, but he never could sing like this. Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. If you are speaking, you cannot really listen. Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.
Huh. Second person that mentioned Peter Gabriel. I started watching some of his older videos and I do not get that. Especially as David progresses throughout the song and range of his voice. And the intensity! Not knowing is good. Love the surprise and the chills it produces.
Thanks for the comment. I listened to Gabriel right after, and I agree, I'm not sure why parts of this read Gabriel to me, but it did on my first lesson. Perhaps it is in the phrasing; IDK. I've listened to this at least a hundred more times since my first reaction and some of my opinions have changed. I think it is really great and I feel the need to listen to it often.
He was very sick during this performance. I think if you liked it, it would be worth it to check out the official music video. Both are great performances, though.
The interpretation believe was to emote the righteous indignation of society’s direction, the vocal fry gives vehement emotion of the lyrics. As noted in another comment, David Draiman was sick with the flu or just getting over when this was recorded. His pace, tone, and intonation are precise & controlled. Either version is remarkable, this one gives a new passion & new audience appreciation. If you are looking to rock or metal artists to possibly react to, Alter Bridge “ Blackbird” is definitely noteworthy for story telling lyrics & great musicians.
Have already subscribed. 🙂 Well, since the original version was a sad, melancolic warning about technology eventually stopping people from direct contact and interreaction, the Disturbed's rendition is a battle cry, since the message is now more true than ever. The lead singer, David Draiman, has this amazing, powerful, versatile voice which becomes an instrument of his own in the show. And the rendition is made in respect for the original. Liked your reaction, thumbs up! 👍
I loved this performance, and I've watched it several times since. I'm in love with this guy's (David Draiman) voice. In the middle of the tune, when his voice floats, it touches me. Love it.
Oh for crying out loud if you must do a reaction on a song, do some research on the band. Disturbed is a heavy metal band. David Draiman is of jewish heritage and a train canton singer. And the way he produces the octave changes show. Also it need to be pointed out he had a bout flu at the time. I would now go watch the official video version, then make your comments.
This song is amazing! And this performance of this song is the best version of this song ever. Phenomenal! For another best version of a song EVER, y'all should definitely check out Post Modern Jukebox's cover of Creep ft Haley Reinhart. You will not regret it!!
Thank you for your comment. Since my first reaction to this song, I've listened to it many times, and some of my opinions have changed. I love this version of the song and I feel the need to listen to it often. I love PMJ; I'll send your recommendation to the channel owner.
Dude! Nothing like Peter Gabriel. You're the ONLY guy to give it a bad critique. This is the most AWESOME performance I have ever heard in my entire life. You're way off!
The original was a lilty, soft observation of the way people were beginning to distance themselves from one another. Disturbed's version was an angry response to the warning not having been heeded.
I think the "deliver" part depends of the listener. Our experiences and perceptions will always diverse, which is awesome. I know that for a lot of people growls and screams are out of the world. For me for instance, music whithout any growl sounds empty. hehehehe For me anything with growls gets better. But I understand everybody who doesn`t feel that way. For everything there is a learning curve or a "getting used to it" curve. It doesnt mean we all will like it, but to like, we first need to get used and understand the appeal. I like the idea of what you guys are doing. But I would be very intrested to hear about the technicalities, arrangement, composition and so on...Like, I dont need to like something to see how brilliant musically it is you know? This break down from a classic trained musician interests me. =] Cheers guys Turn that original song into this peace is fantastic.
You make a good point. Growling is something that I am familiar with, but not used to. The more I have listened to this, I have grown to like it more. Like I mentioned, I have no place or authority to criticize a singer's choice, and at the time, I was not expecting it. This clip is great!
This is so far removed from their typical music that anyone (EVERYONE?) is blown away!! Not until this was released (12/2015) did anyone feel these lyrics so intensely!! This is way more dominant and dynamic than the 1965 original; not necessarily better!! This song can and SHOULD be listened to by anyone who likes music; all genre listeners should experience this song!! IMO, check out Heart paying tribute to Led Zeppelin (2012) in front of the boyz!! Beautiful/Powerful/Incredible Version!! = th-cam.com/video/8e2fJfiddx4/w-d-xo.html and then listen to Johnny Cash play a Nine Inch Nail song... and own it!! = th-cam.com/video/8AHCfZTRGiI/w-d-xo.html
The moment he stops sounding like Peter Gabriel, you stop loving it! You love you some Peter, eh? Eh? Jk Even though I love this version way more than you, you gave your honest review. I am giving you a 👍.
Thank you for your comment. I have listened to this performance daily and I love it more and some of my opinions have changed. Perhaps I gave the wrong impression; I think this performance is great (Gabriel or not). This guy is so great.
You need to also watch the black & White version! It is better! He was sick in this version on Conan! Disturbed is one of the best metal bands right now! because of this song!
Aww, disappointed that you didn't appreciate the amazing "grit" he used to get a very clear urgency across the way only David Draiman could do!! We all have our own taste and preferences, I LOVE Simon and Garfunkel and refused to listen to this performance for so long because in my mind no one could do it like them......David proved me wrong, he has one of the healthiest voices out there...classically trained and takes care to use his grit properly. One Man doing a song that took two men to do, only David Draiman can pull that off.
Peter Grabriel isn't even in Draiman's league. Had you not been flapping your gums through the performance, you would have realized that. I guess if I ever have to learn the tuba for a polka drinking song, I'll call you.
david is jewish and highly trained in their style of singing and still ....i am not jewish so i don't know what it is called David Draiman is an operatically trained cantor tho and has gone back to study more...FYI IN THIS LIVE PART ONLY ONE PART HE USED AUTO TUNE TRACK HE WAS VERRRRY PISSED SAYIN NO MATTER DONT USE IT BUT THEY SNUCK IT IN AND YOU SEE WHEN HE TURNS HIS HEAD IN ANGER LIKE FUCK REAL FAST ON THE BUILD UP///HE WAS VERY SICK HERE BUT REFUSED TO POSTPONE THE SONG...
He's basically classically trained, I think he trained to be a canter in the beginning. He's had some awesome experience. And he was sick the flu when he did this show.
Paul Simon has said publicly that he likes this version. I love Paul but the original lyrics never seemed to go with the instrumentation or even with the style of singing.
I find the growling appropriate - it serves the interpretation of the song.
PAUL SIMON posted this version on his own Facebook page. Something that others cannot claim.
This was a master class in a cover song...he sang it like he meant to.
David Draiman's voice is unparalleled!! One of the best male vocalist's EVER!!
I agree with you Ruthie love ❤️ David s voice.

Yes...what Scott said.

Demonic growling connects really well with the words neon god. Genius interpretation imo.
Spot on!
His vocal fry is amazing
Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song !!!
Disturbed know owns this song!!!
You can't deny the grawls effectiveness
Loved how he started speaking when the lyrics were hearing without listing. 😂 He completely missed that.
This version gives me goosebumps and chills everytime I hear it!!! And yes his voice is EPIC!! The Instrumentals were amazing!!! If it could bring Simon and Garfunkel to tears, I would think that this group did a phenomenal job with this CLASSIC song!!

Since I did this reaction, I like the growl more. I would still love to hear him belt; I know he has it in him.
Rasp and grit. Not growling. He has an amazing voice.
The growl represents anger that the message isn’t being heard.
I love how the vocal fry (growl) is used. It is difficult technique that few have mastered to this extent. It was fun to hear it used in a slow song like this. His voice is on loan from God.
M 40 doesn't get the reference. lol. Or maybe it's just "Talent...on loan from God."
@M 40 Explain it to me then.
God looked upon David and said thus; "I will gift you this voice, if you make an awesome cover of a 60's song in 2015."
Growling? They're a heavy metal band. So, yeah.
NU METAL
@@thanosdarkseid8695 Even David says they are heavy metal

For everything there is a learning curve or a "getting used to it" curve. It doesnt mean we all will like it, but to like, we first need to get used and understand the appeal. I like the idea of what you guys are doing. But I would be very intrested to hear about the technicalities, arrangement, composition and so on...Like, I dont need to like something to see how brilliant musically it is you know? This break down from a classic trained musician interests me. =] Cheers guys
Turn that original song into this peace is fantastic.
Nightwish. Ghost love Score
I think that one is already on the list! It's great!
Hell, pretty much anything by Nightwish!
You should watch the Disturbed video for the song
Sounds.... like you need to eat a cupcake and listen to it again.
The amazing thing is that he had the flu when they performed this.
You need to also watch the black & White version! It is better! He was sick in this version on Conan! Disturbed is one of the best metal bands right now! because of this song!
David could go either way with his voice span.
Good. He was sick during this performance. Listen to the official video for a better performance.
David is classically trained singer he was studying to be a cantor
Aww, disappointed that you didn't appreciate the amazing "grit" he used to get a very clear urgency across the way only David Draiman could do!! We all have our own taste and preferences, I LOVE Simon and Garfunkel and refused to listen to this performance for so long because in my mind no one could do it like them......David proved me wrong, he has one of the healthiest voices out there...classically trained and takes care to use his grit properly. One Man doing a song that took two men to do, only David Draiman can pull that off.
I was hoping for a hornist but a tubist will do nicely as well.
Peter Gabriel Loves you, we don't care about Peter, keep your head into the artist at hand ...
Peter Grabriel isn't even in Draiman's league. Had you not been flapping your gums through the performance, you would have realized that. I guess if I ever have to learn the tuba for a polka drinking song, I'll call you.
It doesn't sound like peter Gabriel. .wtf ? No !
Yeah, Ok. So there had to be one person that doesn't think this performance is EPIC!
...and he was sick during this performance
He has the flu in this version. Ps Disturbed are a heavy metal band. Peter Gabriel????
david is jewish and highly trained in their style of singing and still ....i am not jewish so i don't know what it is called David Draiman is an operatically trained cantor tho and has gone back to study more...FYI IN THIS LIVE PART ONLY ONE PART HE USED AUTO TUNE TRACK HE WAS VERRRRY PISSED SAYIN NO MATTER DONT USE IT BUT THEY SNUCK IT IN AND YOU SEE WHEN HE TURNS HIS HEAD IN ANGER LIKE FUCK REAL FAST ON THE BUILD UP///HE WAS VERY SICK HERE BUT REFUSED TO POSTPONE THE SONG...
Save it
Listen to Down With The Sickness
Listen to Disturbed:Down with the Sickness. You'll get a better idea of his rasp.
Yes, you don't know...
& to all the 👎, music confuses zombies.
he also had the flu that night
He's basically classically trained, I think he trained to be a canter in the beginning. He's had some awesome experience. And he was sick the flu when he did this show.
Paul Simon has said publicly that he likes this version. I love Paul but the original lyrics never seemed to go with the instrumentation or even with the style of singing.
Metal band David Draiman
Peter Gabriel wishes.
