The shot of the hand writing the music has an old-time cuff or something of metal to keep the hand and arm off the page to not smear the ink. I am 77 and grew up with Simon & Garfunkel and never understood the song until about 4 years ago heard Disturb's cover. Then I understood the song. The Conan Show performance was nominated for a Grammy and the audience commented on some videos that they gave them a 10-minute standing ovation.
Listened to this song for 50 years without ever understanding the message, David made me listen and get the meaning. I will say to me it's better than the original because the message is dark and foreboding and Paul & Art sang it like a folk song. Taking nothing away from the writing, that is still masterful, but this brought tears to my eyes and that never happened with the original.
The comments are interesting. You don’t stop too often. I watch reactions for reactions! Stop as much as you need. You’ve probably heard their Down With the Sickness. Their range is phenomenal. I’ve seen them live multiple times. Best concerts I’ve ever attended.
This version made me appreciate the original even more. It’s like a continuance of the feeling the original gives you. This version brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. It’s just gorgeous.
"...and the people bowed and prayed to the neon gods they made..." When this song came out that "neon god" was television. Today it's the almighty smartphone. As the "neon god" has evolved and become more powerful, the people still don't heed Simon and Garfunkles' warning. Does David seem mad about that?
Thanks for watching! This is a reaction video- the whole point is to react in real time to what is happening. Virtually all reactors on TH-cam do the same type of format. It would be difficult to remember every thought and comment one would like to make on the details of the song, so it is done during the song.
The best reaction videos are the ones where the critic keeps quiet, allows the song to play full, react facially AND THEN add your 2 cents... YOU FAILED DUDE!!! Keep this in mind for future reactions.
Disturbed's version spoke to me in a way that the original didn't. (Sorry! I feel guilty saying that knowing how special it is to you. 😳) I felt the weight of the lyrics and actually listened to the words. I was little when I heard the original and the folk style music didn't pull me in, it never did for anything. I was too young to comprehend the lyrics and by the time I was old enough to understand, I'd already pigeonholed it into the "Mom and Dad's music" box. My brother listened to Alice Cooper, and I grew up on classic rock, so I never circled back around. I feel like Disturbed brought the brilliance of the words and meaning to an audience that wouldn't have listened before. I think it's a perfect marriage. And David's vocals are everything ... (I might have a little crush. Don't judge me! Lol) Seriously, so glad you enjoyed this. It's wonderful to see someone who loves the original be able to appreciate a different take. Nicely done! I'll be back for more Disturbed. :)
Same here. The original had this whimsical instrumental with the voices filled with melancholy. Disturbed’s version feels like it goes from a hopeless whisper to a frustrated scream, then almost ends in melancholy. For me, he shows and emanates every line and every emotion that goes with it. Like you said, it makes the listener actually listen and feel absolutely everything with him.
Paul Simon, upon hearing Disturbed’s version, said the song now belongs to Disturbed. Simon also put a link to the Disturbed version on his page. What a compliment!
... David Draiman has one of the best voice's I've ever heard imho. He's got it all... stunning voice in either tenor or baritone (range), distortion (vocal fry), control, emotion, vibrato ... can even put vibrato on the distortion which is incredibly difficult to do! David is amazing! Love your reaction.
Agreed. Intense and emotional. One of the best remakes ever done. I also agree...some songs you just don't mess with. But sometimes... you get a result like this. Amazing stuff.
David Draiman was classically trained as Jewish Hassan / Cantor. Phenomenal vocalist. And the line, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls" is one of my favorite verses in any song, ever.
Thank you! I was just wondering how Simon & Garfunkel reacted to Disturbed's rendition of their classic song. I truly love and can watch for hours, people reacting to this awesome rendition of the sound of silence. They are all blown away, as I am each and every time I watch and listen. I never tire of listening to David Dramon's voice.
Loved your reaction. People will probably tell you to check out this on Conan O’Brian. They will also tell you he was sick with the flu, but I just watched an interview with David and he actually had a bleeding lesion on his vocal cords. I think that makes it even more amazing. There is another group that does a cover of this. Pentatonix . They are known worldwide, have been together since 2011. 20 million subscribers and over 6 BILLION views. Have 3 Grammys. A star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Platinum records. About 4 thousand Christmas albums 😂 If you watch 1 video their fan base known as Pentaholics will flock to your channel. If you do decide to do this I recommend that you read Alan Freeman’s comment. He will give you their ENTIRE history. Oh, one more thing. They are an a cappella group. If you already know who they are, then Nevermind. 🤭Also just subscribed.
Paul Simon said it himself. This is the best rendition, even his own. David Draman is one of the most invoking and powerful but also classical educated. He has the most versatile voice in history.
I cry almost every time. This rendition is amazingly powerful. Its like the cover of Hurt that Johnny Cash did. They made the songs their own and brought the meaning to the next level. Thanks for your reaction! I enjoyed you watching this, especially with the initial skepticism.😊 I was pretty sure youd be blown away.
You have got to hear the live version on Conan O'Brian. His performance crashed every communication the studio had. Miles Kennedy also played guitar then.
Great analysis! Unbelievably indescribably powerful rendition!!! The original was very good, no doubt, but even Paul Simon himself is quoted as saying that Disturbed now "OWNS" the song - and that is a compliment beyond all compliments!
This is rhe last song my husbabd & I listened to & fell in love with before gwe passed away. I listen to it daily. He was a fan of heavy metal. I have this version on my play list at my funeral as a tribute to us as a couple & as a thank-you to both S&G and Disturbed. Love it. Makes me cry everytime I it.❤😢😂😂😢❤
In addition to being one of the best vocalists of the century, David is an advocate for mental illness and an awesome individuals. I love his interviews. Btw I am not a heavy metal fan. Paul Simon contacted David and told him that The Sound of Silence was his now. There is no greater praise for a cover! I grew up with and love the original, but this is my fav version.
Great reaction! Hope you dive into more Disturbed ... they have many, many great and worthy songs. Here are a few of their harder fare, *Down With The Sickness *Stupify *Stricken *Indestructible *Ten Thousand Fists *Inside The Fire *Asylum Ok, i could keep going, lol.😅 PS, disregard the nay sayers. Your reaction style is just fine! 😊
You are amazing! You explain everything so well, and I loved how you mentioned the scenes and instruments and what an amazing voice David has. It all came together to produce a masterpiece ❤
I like this version better than the original. Please stop commenting until after the song. First time hearing this group and I am not a Metal fan but this was OUTSTANDING!!!
If You Have not seen The Live Version From Disturbed on Conan O'Brian Show 3/2016, It's a Must ! David was a Little under the weather and Still nailed the Song!✌
The original was a warning, the remake is admonishment. Also, was fun watching you going in like "respect for the classics", and then saw that it was absolutely respected.
The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel is sad resignation. The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is Dammit, LISTEN! ***** The Warning ***** "And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." ~ Paul Simon "And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
To see the extent of David Draimans abilities...I would suggest checking out the Disturbed songs "Stupified" and "Down with the Sickness" for starters. Two of their best known songs.
I think the beauty of the way Simon and Garfunkel was great, but the lyrics of this song are dark and edgy, and Disturbed brought that emotion to the song.
Love it. No wonder this one is called "The king of covers" But then again it´s not a cover. Paul Simon posted this and said: It´s their song now. The only other cover/tribute that can compete with this one is: Nightwish High hopes (Pink Floyd) Oh and btw I am a HUGE Simon and Garfunkel fan
Falling in Reverse - "Last Resort Reimagined" is a wonderful cover of Papa Roach - "Last Report". Besides his awsome muscial skills the lead singer Ronnie Radke also makes the best videos. His "reimagined" songs use the exact same lyrics but have a totally different composition and feel. You feel the lyrics much more.
I don't like "f'ing" with classics either. But...when the cover of a piece of music raises, said classic to new heights and/or celebrates classic then by all means go for it. Classics I have loved and then loved again? ZZ Top Dejango/Just got paid Joe Bonamassa, Bad Company Bad company Five Finger Death Punch, Bad Company Seagull Joe Bonamassa. These are just a few. I could go on
One of the few, possibly only cover that I love perhaps more than the original. You spoke of the harmonies Simon & Garfunkle created, I think Ren and Chinchilla are more magical. Lots of couples sound good together, a few make magic. Check out "How to Be Me" (Live version.) Please. You also mentioned the original of this song is "sparse" (or similar). When did you last listen to it? I listened after hearing this version of "Sound of Silence," and found the opposite. S&G's felt cluttered and pop-py. (And I love them together and also Paul solo.)
Tottall different artist suggestion: Ren from UK.. This year he became one of many millions' favourite contemporary artist. You can start the Reh journey with "Hi Ren" which would be the ideal introduction to the artist.

As a musician you can only respect that of another!! It’s like the “Noah ark” of instruments coming a shore right? I grew up w/s&g oh my god they were the “folk” song writers/music we all tapped to back then! Never dismiss a great message from another Artist!!! This I must say… a total JUSTICE RENDITION!!! This is my fav “metals”band they chose this song because of the message their is no other remake/rendition of that S&G gave praise to their powerful rendition they had predicted! Totally WOW! Love your take Gary! YOU MUST HEAR THEIR LIVE VERSION ON CONAN HE WAS SICK BUT STILL SHOWED TO PERFORM ORCHESTRA AND ALL!! Till you watch this version there is no mercy! He is a trained cantor and should be respected for his talent this shall be or go down voted the BEST EVER RENDITION OF ANOTHER ARTIST RIGHT!? Make sure you you listen to Conan version cuz that’s the “real” !! You will,..never be the same! This is like a hall of fame experience
Another rock band to check out is Ramstein. It's in german, but if you understand the German language, the songs take on an entire new depth of meaning. Also, lead singer Till Lindemann was supposed to be an Olympic swimmer for East Germany, and he's a fully licenced pyrotechnician (explaining all of the fire/explosives in their shows)
Thank you for bringing your knowledge of The Sound of Silence and for doing some research into Disturbed. Nothing worse than watching a review from someone that has no clue about the band or song.
Lots of people saying to listen to the live version on conan, instead I suggest the live version featuring Myles Kennedy which brings in some of those harmonies that you're used to from the original!

This song changed my mind on covers
I was gobsmacked the first time I heard David sing this song. The video is impeccable.
David Draiman was classically trained as Jewish Hassan / Cantor. Phenomenal vocalist.
And the line, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls" is one of my favorite verses in any song, ever.
I get chills up and down my body. So powerful! 😊
His father and grandfather were also Cantors, so it runs in the family.
I heard a great explanation comparing songs..Older version was the Warning... New version was the rage for not listening.
I can't hear this song enough! The emotions I feel while I'm listening to this are over-whelming!
This version grabs your soul and shakes the shit out of it. I love it ❤
When he did this on Conan. Paul called him (David) It's your song now.
❤
Paul Simon Loved this Version so much, He put this song on His Playlist.🥰
He didn't put this video on his playlist but the life performance on Conan
Thank you! I was just wondering how Simon & Garfunkel reacted to Disturbed's rendition of their classic song.

This is so Epic!! I have listened to this at least a hundred times! A great tribute to the original! So much meaning and emotion!! ❤
Paul Simon says the song is theirs now and includes their web site in his comments.

I view the original with a Haunting sadness but hopeful, and this one is hauntingly angry, but still hopeful 💜💜💜
You should do the live Conan O'Brian version of this song. It literally brought me to tears. I'm a grown ass man too
Love it. I can`t help but shed a tear.

Disturbed with “Down with the Sickness” official video. 🔥🔥🔥
I like this version better than the original. Please stop commenting until after the song. First time hearing this group and I am not a Metal fan but this was OUTSTANDING!!!
Nobody talks about the video!!!
It's so good- I really like it.
Many has stated the original was a warning. This version was the warning wasn't headed. You REALLY need to look into their "A Reason To Fight".
Please look the live version they did in 2016 I believe
This is the version you want to hear... th-cam.com/video/Bk7RVw3I8eg/w-d-xo.html The live performance on Conan... Always better live!!!
Not a cover... It's an upgrade!!! It got two thumbs up from Paul Simon!

David Draman called Paul to see if he wanted money for the song rights. Paul said "No it's your song now."
Amazing.
Disturbed is phenomenal. They and system of a down are some of my fave bands from that era. Their covers are amazing, try land of confusio.
