  • We have been showing you some gay-friendly things to do around Osaka for the past couple of weeks, but have thus far neglected a very important part - the nightlife! We will remedy that today and take you all to a local GMPD (bear) bar as we know a lot of you are eager to learn more about bears in Japan. Come listen in with us as the bar owner, Hideki-san, spills tea on the community and tell us what the gay scene in Osaka is really like.

First, I want to address the minstrel Jim Crow era Black chef sculpture behind the bar. It was very off-putting and at first I couldn’t concentrate on the what anyone was saying in the video at all. I was also slightly surprised no other watchers commented on it. It’s an offensive caricature and I’m very curious as to why it’s there. If, as a Black bear foreigner, I walked in and saw that, i’d probably leave after one drink.
As for labels, I do agree that they are necessary to make things easier, but I will say attraction and chemistry have very little to do with our labels. If two bottoms go home together, clearly there were other factors at play outside of their sexual position preference, and that deserves to be explored as well.

I honestly didnt notice that statuette until I read your comment...I doubt the bar even knows that its offensive.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is never our intention to make anyone uncomfortable or to perpetuate harmful imagery on our channel, so we apologize for this.
We reached out to Hideki-san, the bar owner, and he also felt the same and thanked you all for bringing this to his attention.
We hope everyone will continue to raise these issues to us so that we can make our community a safe space for all ♥

@@TokyoBTM I’m truly thankful for your response and advocacy. I admire this channel so much and admire most of all the open dialogue you’ve created in the comments. I have always cringed at the ties between “gay culture” and american slavery fetishism. Collars, harnesses, ball gags, chains…those weren’t exactly invented as gay fashion statements. Please thank the bar owner on my behalf. I do believe that it was displayed without bad intentions, but even so, representation matters, and knowledge is power. Thanks again guys!

Yes we need labels! We just need to teach people that a label is only a practical thing. It's the unrelated prejudices around the labels that are problematic. I am very comfortable with my labels, because they allow me to navigate the world in a more efficient and friendlier way, instead of trying to find everything out on my own. It's like discovering a new city with a map, it's just direction, nothing more. Makes life easier. the problem starts when people start assuming that because I use a map, I must be into make-up, or cereal or *insert random unrelated thing.*

While I think people who decry "labels" are speaking with good intent, I think they're generally falling for the false idea that to achieve an equitable world, we must level all difference between people. Rather, we should learn to celebrate difference and diversity. There are so many ways to live our lives, and so many colorful background we come from. Why would you want to homogenize that?

Personally, when I was coming into accepting myself as a lesbian, I didn’t initially use the word lesbian to describe myself. I used WLW, or didn’t use labels. But I think that’s because I was afraid of the label of lesbian being associated with me since in my family and wider Hispanic culture, being gay is something that is tolerated just as long as you don’t talk about being gay. Especially when your talking to older people, this mentality is strong. I guess they want to forget that your queer? Maybe they want to keep that stuff hidden. Out of sight, out of mind type of stuff. But I don’t think they, the older person, will forget, and neither should you as a queer person.

I can't say if having labels in the gay community is a good thing as Im not gay but in terms of kink, the labels are like a guide to help you find what you're interested looking for.
With gay marriage I definitely think it's hugely important for every society. It's more then the piece of paper, it gives equal rights to couples legally and shows equality to straight marriage in modern society. My aunt was gay when it was still illegal in the UK, now she's proudly married to the love of her life.
also this video is amazing, I love these interviews where you learn first hand experiences from people who we wouldn't hear from other wise in main stream media.

Here in Uruguay we have same-sex marriage, but there is a lot of work to do. 4 years ago all citizen had to vote if a law, named Trans Law, because some bigots don't like to give rights. This lae enabled trans people 3 things: change your name and sex in our national ID, 1% of the public jobs must be filled with trans people, a compensation for trans which suffer institucional discrimination during the dictatorship. The issue is not "labels" per se. Labels are simply there to help navigate the world, to identify self-referential groups, etc. The problem is when labels are used in the Procrustean manner. Be it imposed by others or by oneself ("I am X, all X have these traits, therefore I, too, must have these traits"). Yet I think that this (potential) problem does not warrant throwing the baby out with the water. In fact, removing the labels might lead to curious conundrums and makes harder to explain, e.g., why some Bob is not an ultimate misogynist (here, the line of thinking goes like this: Bob does not desire sex with women; he discriminates women as sexual partners; therefore, he is a misogynist). A label allows to simply explain: Bob is gay.

honestly the whole focus on top or bottom is a bit weird to me.
I can't imagine just being 'one role'. I would have missed out on a lot of very good lovers (most were versatile).
Also, I feel like the whole penetrating thing is not that big of a focus for many Western gays....
But hey, it's a cultural thing, there are no 'rights' or 'wrong', and in the end, we're all pink brothers and sisters.

  • @clankb2o5

I dislike it when people devote so much effort to reinventing gender roles for gay men by 1) reducing every guy to BEING a bottom or top instead of LIKING bottoming or topping and 2) subsequently ascribing personality traits to "tops" and "bottoms". That is precisely what we do not need.

    Great video as always!!!
I would like to comment about the label thing... I think that the main thing Andrew was trying to defend is the idea of community, and with that I totally agree. Labels and communities walk together but they are different things, label it's just a word that try to identify something, community is an political thing and through that we are able to fight, defend and conquer things. Here in Brazil we have an large gay community and there are a lot of discussions today between the last generation of LGBTQIAP+ and the newest one about this whole idea of labels versus standards. Even the crowds of the parties here are fun to see. When you go in a "tradicional" gay party above 30 yrs old people, you'd see kind of the same style of wearing and acting. When you go to a party under 30, you'd notice a bunch of differences, which doesn't make one or other better, but it helps to show up the clear differences inside our community when we talk about generation and way of thinking and being. (it's a complex theme 🥲)

You guys go to so many gay bars and clubs. What would your dream bar/ club be if money, location and logistics were taken care of? Like interior design, vibe, theme, size, clientele base, etc.

I like my labels. Labels can be important to people who struggled finding themselves, I'm in this group. I'm a proud power bottom vers, pan demisexual (ace) Meng definitely gives power bottom energy. Sub tops and power bottoms are often forgotten about unless you know a bit about bdsm but not all pb and st are into bdsm.

おもしろいですよ。The assigned seating and the bar staff playing Cupid is especially different! Definitely not in a bad way. It is very charming. I have one question. It is likely an unusual request, de mo, is it possible to order something non-alcoholic? I have no objection to giving my drink to the barkeep if not and みずをのみます。Labels are good only for finding our types and helping others identify with us. Otherwise, they are uncomfortable. Yes we do need them though. ありがとうございました。ビデオがすきです。じゃあーまたね。

I just had an additional thought on the whole "Labels, Good or Bad" debate. You guys need to conduct an experiment in the name of science. Since Meng is heavily leaning towards the labels are bad side of the debate, Meng will conduct the experiment and Andrew will observe to ensure that Meng complies with the constraints of the experiment and does not cheat. The premise of the experiment is that Meng will go to a bathhouse to find a sexual partner or two but he cannot ask anyone what their sexual preference is as far as position goes and he also cannot tell anyone what his preference is. Of course you will need to find a bathhouse that has men that would interest Meng and where he would also fit the type that people who go there are looking for. In other words, a bathhouse that attracts body builder types probably would not work. Here is the hard part of this... Meng cannot already be a known commodity there. He will need to be fresh unknown meat at this location. Is that even possible for any part of Japan? Sorry Meng, I did not know how else to put that. For what it is worth, I am not calling you a slut, just acknowledging your new found popularity. This could be a very interesting experiment if done right. Can Meng successfully hook-up without discussing sexual preference? Will he get frustrated very quickly and breakout the labels to accomplish his goal? Andrew will the eyes and ears of this experiment so science will get an answer. Think about it. I know that there are some difficulties that will need to be navigated but the Nobel prize in gay sexual sciences is calling. Pull this off and you guys would be legends.

Do you have plans to make content regarding the intersex community? (I guess, the Japanese term is futanari? But like legit born that way & both reproductive systems fully functional in one body)
    How about polyamory?

There’s a difference between labels and vocabulary: If I call someone an Aroace pansexual who’s versatile, I’m not labelling. It’s vocabulary, but if someone uses the word ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ in a derogatory manner or employs a slur, that’s labelling.
Both Andrew and Meng round out the argument beautifully.

I agree, it's only labeling if it's used in a reductive or derogatory way. We express our identities to others, and to ourselves, through language.

Thank you guys, we definitely do still need labels!! We're unfortunately not in a utopia yet 😭
I think the main issue is how others reduce some because of their label and others that constrain themselves in the label box. It's fluid! For everyone! Lol, a label could be Tokyo, but where in Tokyo are you? It's never clear cut

I feel like the classification you're looking for is dom amd sub, not top or btm. The general belief is that a top is dominant and a bottom submissive but what you guys have described here is exactly Meng as a dominant bottom
Which I think is still different again from a power bottom...how's that for extra labels?😂
