    How do you adjust the rudder cables? They are too lose and I have to turn knob all the way to either side to turn the rudder?? Thanks

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a clamp on either side of the rudder on the steering bracket. On the bottom of those clamps is a nut loosen the nut and then pull the cable tight and then tighten the nut back down. make sure the ruder and steering handle remain straight throughout the process.

      I'm in the process of selling this Kayak so probably won't get a chance to do a video on the cart. Here is a short recap: The wheels are harbor freight pneumatic wheels. the axle was 5/" steel rod. the cart frame is the black PVC pipe 2". I added PVC board to the pipe with a 5/8" hole in it to capture the axle shaft. This is similar to how I built the pontoons in a separate video.

    Mine's on order and should be here in a couple weeks so I have no hands on experience (yet). I was thinking about using a wooden skewer to hold the drive shaft in the down position. My thought was if it hit a rock, perhaps the skewer would break instead of the drive system. Is that crazy talk? What are your thoughts?

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think that is crazy, I would have a few extra on hand in case they break. I would need to be more like 3/8" dowel but not a bad idea actually!

      @@brucenjudy2 I recommend adding a small, mounted bungie cord looped around the steering mechanism to keep it moving in a straight line so you can have your hands completely free and not worry about losing course.
      A little hard to describe in words, but I added a plastic mounting hook above the steering handle and mounted the ends of a bungie cord with u-shaped mounting brackets to the sides of it. The cord loops under and through the steering handle opening, then pulls onto the hook. Works quite well and is easy enough to work with one hand. Makes fishing a whole lot easier.

      @@aarronconleche8468 Thanks Aarron - good tip. I’ve had my kayak on the lake a couple times now and totally agree with the bungee cord idea.
      My second time out, the rudder mount came loose. I now carry that allen wrench and have a couple extra screws in my emergency kit.
      It’s a great kayak but that tracking is a bit wonky. Probably due to only being 10’ long.
      Thanks again - happy yaking

      Be thankful there are people that make review videos that aren't sponsored by the product they are reviewing. The most positive aspect of the crank 10 is the price tag. It's important to understand what you are giving up when you buy a budget kayak. Sure it has flaws but it was still a very enjoyable ride!

    • @pmm422

      Yes the bow would work for the pooch but on a kayak when you hit those large waves like those thrown off by wake boats the water often comes over the bow. So as long as poocharino doesn't mind getting wet every once in a while it would work. This particular Kayak shines in the budget category but to get a spot locking motor would require significant investment but it is possible.

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the removable pedal thing was the first iteration of the Hobie patent. The patent protection on that drive has run out which is why you see these third party makers adding them to their Kayaks. the rest of Hobie's designs will eventually make it into the free market including their 360 drive but it will be a while. I really do like the simplicity of the Perception designs and ease of use. Great little Kayak.

    What rail system did you get? Where?

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lrenz, I looked at a lot of manufacturers and was mostly frustrated with the limited length selections. No one seemed to want to sell it by the foot. I want what I want and if I can't easily buy it and at a price I think is fair then I make it. This is what I had to do in this case. It is comprised of T-track (sold for woodworking) and 3/16" (5mm ish) aluminum bar stock. Because the track mounts on the flat kayak rails I wanted it to be stronger than just the T-Track. I drilled holes in the bar stock that lined up with the ones in the T-rack and threaded them. I then used machine screws to attach the T-track to the bar stock. The bar stock gives it a much wider base and a lot stronger than T track. I drilled mounting holes near the edge of the bar stock and used plastic screws and Silicone glue to attach it to the rails. I believe any of the commercial systems will work they just weren't available in the lengths I wanted.

    Just bought my 2nd Crank 10…..sold the first one like a dumbass! In my opinion the best! Instant reverse, when drive is up system is not in your way like some other pedal drives are, turns on a dime, fast boat, fish or rec use, did I mention instant reverse, no cable pulling, no turn the drive around…..just pedal backwards. Very stable. They need to design a relief for the drive if you hit something.

    Dumb question, I just bought the Yak rail system and was going to install it but there is no way to put a nut on the back of the screw. My question is did you just drill a smaller pilot hole and use glue or were you able to get a nut on the screws? Thanks in advance!

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adama Ray Not at all a dumb question. I did drill a small pilot hole and then I used stainless steel screws with threads designed to be used in plastics. on top of that as you suggested I added a liberal dollop of silicone clue around each screw and in a few random places where the track would contact the hull. I then screwed it all in place. Recently I just had to remove one of the tracks because I wanted it longer and closer to the seat. The removal process was a bit challenging the silicone held it rather firmly even after the screws were removed. So I think that technique gets an A+.

    What lubrication did you end up using on the steering handle?

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Several things to report on this, First off it required no lubrication, if you loosen the screw just a little, 1/2 turn in my case it stopped binding and rotated freely. I did however replace the factory handle with a 6 inch tall DIY version. It makes it way easier to reach the steering and a lot more comfortable on the water with the extended knob. I also replaced the nylon cabling with plastic coated stainless steel cabling. A lot more robust and a lot fewer repairs. I'll show all these in the next video I do. If it is sunny this weekend I'll likely do that video, a high level walk through of all the mods I've done.

    • @pmm422
      @pmm422  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not ask, funny I didn't even think to look for a warranty before buying it, LOL. But most any company will support their product even if you have customized so long as the customization don't appear to be the cause of the failure. However technically yes any modification to a Kayak could void the warranty. here is an excerpt from their warranty language "Kayaks that have been structurally or dimensionally altered or modified." I suppose you could argue that it alters the structure. Also I suppose that using outriggers on the Kayak may also trigger this caveat "Kayaks determined to have been used for any activity other than an activity which is customary for the product." Their warranty is for manufacturer defect and workmanship so I'm sure they would still take care of something that fell under that category even after the alterations.
