I must say, I accidently made a "viral" video few years ago and it destroyed my channel. Like the video said I gained a bunch of subscribers who wanted more of the "viral" content but my channel was quite the opposite. Everything he said is pretty accurate.

This kinda happened to me this last July. One of my videos went way above my usual norm (20k views) as a small (minuscule) channel that I am. That is not "viral" per se, I know, but comparatively speaking, for a channel of my size that was a very huge spike. It didn't happen because I pursued or I intended it. Actually that one video was just like any other I make and I've kept making my next videos in the same style and theme. So maybe it just was that the algorithm decided to push that one video. In fact I had the feeling that what makes a piece of content go viral or stand above other is the algorithm, not the audience. The audience will watch whatever TH-cam pushes them. After that said video, the algo didn't push any of my other videos that hard. So some people stuck around, but innevitably after the huge spike came the downfall. I would very much prefered more steady progress and not going "viral" or these sudden ups and downs. That is what actually makes all of this frustrating.

As someone who has had several YT shorts get over 10m views I agree totally with this vid. however my shorts were definitely not "trying to go viral" they were just the "best bits" taken from my long content. The comedown has been massive though. my long videos only get a tiny amount of views compared to the amount of subs I have. I won't deliberately stop myself going viral but I've had to come to terms with the fact that 90% of the people subbed to my channel have 0 interest in my long content.

I had a viralish video on a different channel, but it actually helped my channel grow from an algorithmic perspective, despite nearly everyone who subscribed from the video eventually unsubscribing, the few who stuck around were some extra viewers who enjoyed my content. Which therefore grew my channel to other people.

Not that one of my regular length videos went viral, but one of my shorts about my pets got 1k views overnight. I checked and the view count wasn’t that high, and then the next day, I wake to check and see it’s suddenly passed 1k views, which shocked me haha. To say that was when I felt a “video/short go somewhat viral” is a bit much, but it felt great to know lots of peeps really enjoy that short, so yeah. And yes, after that short, none of my other shorts, except for one, came close to the viral-ness that was the one short, but even I knew that it would only be one short that got a lot of clicks. I still haven’t had any of my regular videos go viral yet, but I’m sure one it could happen. Still gotta keep pushing and improve myself, as long as my drive to do so is present. Otherwise I just end up not doing it. And if a video of mine went viral again, I’m still gonna make sure to not let myself indulge in it for too long

Excellent video, you covered the viral topic perfectly. We have seen many channels with 1 or a few viral videos and it does hurt their channel. Lots of subscribers but hardly any views overall. In terms of how many views are viral, as Rob said consistency is key. We still consider ourselves a tiny channel and although we have a few videos with 100k+ views, none of them went "viral". Instead it was just slow, steady but consistent views over time. That is, none of them got a lot of views overnight or even quickly. Hope this gives other small creators motivation and hope. Just be consistent with your work and the views will come. Good luck all.

This has happened to me. I've got 2 videos that hit over a million that got kind of blessed by the algorithm out of nowhere. Then attempting to chase those view counts was honestly impossible, yet I felt bad about videos I did make or deviated from that style of videos regardless.
Now I started looking at what content truly makes me happy. While it's not performing amazing yet and it's far from perfect, it's content I believe is good qualtiy. That can only get better the more I make. Which can get better by educating myself and learning a new trick for every video and thumbnail.

I can confirm this with my 3-4 month experiences. When i first started only 100 or 200 views could make me so happy! But after some of my video goes viral my channel boosted so fast and I used to get almost 50k-100k views per day. But after some day my channel got downfall. Believe me this time was very difficult to allow. I was so demotivated and almost quitting youtube. But maybe 2 or 3 weaks ago I found I have really some loyal viewers and they enjoy my contents. So instead of trying to go viral I started making content for my little viewer base. Nowadays I dont get so much views but I am happy with my core viewers. The 4th video I made on my channel went viral relative to my standard channel traffic. I didn't do anything special I just happened to make a good video and be the first to do a video on the particular product. I lucked out and was able to keep some decent content flowing for about 2 months to retain that audience. After 2 months that viral video calmed down and I saw my numbers go way down almost as low as they were before the video. I lost a lot of steam at that point due to self imposed expectations for my content. My growth on my channel has been consistent ever since then and I am glad I didn't give up after that viral video started to dwindle away. My first video has gathered over 160k views so far (not really a planned thing). It helped me to get past 1000 subscribers and 4k watch hours quite fast but when the steam ran out, it was like hitting a brick wall.
On the other hand, it was motivating and helped me to get into YPP fast. But it wasn't nice after the steam ran out. I fully expected it to happen but it was much bigger crash than I really expected. Now I really need to continue building my audience that is interested in what I produce.
If I could choose it, I'd still go for it naturally. It was a nice start for my channel. But yeah, getting one video going viral really doesn't mean you'll be reaching a large audience in the future. Now I'm getting something like average of 4-5 new subscribers / day. I still have to remind myself to be thankful for that. While not even close to numbers I got at the beginning, it's still great for thing young gaming channel by non-native English speaker.

I'm a small creator that makes wild camping videos that usually only get around 1.5k views max! One of my videos recently blew up with over 60k views in 5 days and is still climbing. Luckily it's similar to my other content but with a twist and since this vid has been blowing up, all my other vids have been climbing up past 3k views also and still climbing 🤩

Going viral largely depends on your channel size. If you only have around 150 subscribers like us, then going viral would mean getting like 75,000-100,000 views. On the other hand, that many views super small compared to a lot of channels so going viral really depends on the channel's size.

This hits home. Coz it's what happened to my gaming channel that caused me to jump from about 300 or so odd subs to over 4000 subs, got 1m views and 2m views on two videos that generated all the subs and traction and then it never translated to the rest of my content. But it wasn't me chasing virality, it just happened that two of my Detroit Become Human videos gained traction. None of it translated to the rest of my channel so my gaming channel still only has those 300 or so odd subs engaging in the content outside those two videos and the funny thing is those two videos where I was funny is generally not my content style 😂 coz I do video essays, playthroughs and gaming news and those two viral videos happened to be "highlights" from a playthrough where I happened to be funny in that moment.

I had this kind of effect on my channel. I posted a Short that got 24k views, at the time it was great, but was also terrible for the growth of the channel. It's crazy that it got to that point 24k is a lot for a small channel, but in terms of those who subscribed is rubbish. I had 30 new subs from it, so about 800 views per sub. I have switched up my content since then, getting rid of the older shorts, and replacing them with newer and longer shorts more related to my long form content. Getting somewhat traction/ viral is just not good for your channel. However, I think further down the line as a much larger channel it could benefit you more.

In one of our channels we got a viral video. It got to 1.3M views in 3 months. Now, we make similar videos to sleep and relax, so most of our videos are doing well. We have all our videos over 20k views within a week of published. Some of them were published 1 month ago and are already 55k views. But we did have a big drop in views, thought we believe it could be because for a month we uploaded twice a week instead of weekly. But it could be that our viral video stopped being recommended so much 🤷‍♀️ who knows. We went from 65-75k daily views to only 20k.

What's funny is I made another very similar but higher quality video, hoping that it would gain the same - or at least similar - traction, and it ended up getting less than 100 views. I completely agree...I had my viral (for me) moment when a larger channel happened to boost an RPG I had a tutorial on. Huge growth comparatively for about three weeks then...back to the trickle because I wasn't prepared for it to happen and didn't know how to capitalize on it. The sudden drop after killed my motivation for a while, so I actually ended up in a worse place due to it.
Happily now I'm getting back on track, and back to the slow but steady growth. Currently getting less views than the semi-viral moment, but more subs and more viewers watching multiple videos - so more value!
