The fact that someone with a law degree says that TH-cam is the hardest thing they've ever done really puts things into perspective. It makes you wonder if the barrier to entry for becoming a successful creator is getting higher and higher, or if it's always been this difficult and we're just now realizing it.

@@bearosophy I feel like the difference is more that, going into law school, you have specific and well-defined goals. Study this -> learn this -> do this -> success. Whereas on TH-cam, you can do all the things people suggest and still fail. You can emulate people and study how they succeeded, but it’s hard to translate their success into your niche and brand. Like I know that I like watching Ryan Higa and Safiya Nygaard, but I’m a kpop edit channel, so I can’t really apply what I see to what I do. Even if I made videos about my daily life or short comedy skits, I wouldn’t *want* to copy something that’s already been done. So it’s a little harder to figure things out 😭
After about a year, just 495 hours of watching time

Hey Rob. Does the region you publish in affect hours and subscribers. I've been at it for 3 years all in my niche, learning and improving and still feel I'm years away from monetization?
The fact that someone said TH-cam is the hardest thing they’ve done compared to becoming a lawyer really puts things in perspective. It will feel that much more rewarding to be able to be monetized and have a successful channel!

I find it fascinating how TH-cam's algorithm plays such a huge role in a creator's success. It's almost like a mysterious force that controls who gets views and who doesn't. It makes me wonder what the future of content creation looks like in an algorithm-driven world.

The key is to not think of it as an algorithm. Think beyond that and the human being you want to speak to an connect with. If you figure that out and can execute well, the 'algorithm' will find an audience for your videos.

I'm In no race to get all that in one year..the more videos I put out will get the viewers I'm aiming for. I don't want to to burn myself out with the amount of editing it takes and give up completely! Steady as she goes!

The thing is you need to get all that in one year if you want to get monetized. Or worse 3 months if you are a shorts content creator.

My niche i think is a niche with a hook....
I have a specific set of skills and i found a hole in the content i was finding which i appear to able to fill, but im also passionate about what I'm doing.
And i have a log book, so when an idea pops into my head i can write it down and either wean it out or keep it once ive thought it over
I have almost 4000 hours of watch time and almost 7K subscribers, what happens in my case is that I do very short videos so a one minute video average around 45 seconds of watch time. But with people that follow me like this because I can explain topics in very short time, give some examples and that's all, without talking too much :) and I personally feel more comfortable doing this because I don't expend too much time doing a video so I can make more videos in the future.

That’s similar to my videos - longest videos are about 4 minutes. I have the subscriber count but not the Watch Time Hours. Because my videos are short, it’s taking a while.

The biggest game changer for me was livestreams, the reach has been much larger and even if only a few people stay for a while that’s much more watch hours than a usual 8-10 min video

If there's anything I can add onto this video, avoid a niche that may eventually die out.
This is normal on video games, especially Roblox. You think that the niche will be successful forever, but then you eventually notice a downfall.
I have some content ideas for when I am ready to come back, including lots of vlogs dating back to 2019 that have yet to be uploaded. I don't quite know what niche within vlogging you call that.
Additionally, more car content like always, and maybe cooking as a possibility. I don't know.
3 years over 200 videos in my niche. Got a few loyal fans and people who now join up with me ,which is awesome! and about 350 subscribers. Gonna take some time still. However I also work more than full-time on top of this so making videos is incredibly difficult to pull off. So I've been happy with the progress so far.
I've decided to start uploading content very similar to another quizkly growing creator. Nobody else is really covering this topic thoroughly (American Geography), so I have started uploading videos about similar topics to them and I have started growing quickly myself. Here's something for y'all to take out of this; find a niche with either a quickly growing creator or no established creator, and go in on it. Be different, but not too different. You want to find the sweet spot between too specific and too broad.

Admittedly a tough ride! One has to stay motivated to keep going. Some channels take off quickly, for the rest of us, it can be a slow journey! What matters is moving forward, learning from the TH-cam veterans and trying not to get burnt out along the way!

It's kind of sad that even with 500 hours of content being uploaded to TH-cam every minute, only a select few creators will ever reach the monetization threshold. It really shows how difficult it is to make it on the platform.

One of your previous videos stated to define your business or something like that. Which to me is making lets plays for video games. Over time I have thought more about this and that doing Horror games would be more my niche. I know there is a lot of other competition in this area but then trying to define that niche again helps. I will ponder this more and see what I come up with. But hearing similar things in different wording does help so thank you for that. Keep up the amazing you you are helping so many people with these videos. Even if we never become big its helping people grow in their knowledge of content creation.

Great video! One question, my biggest streaming short had nothing to do with my niche! My niche is reggae music and the short was about getting financial assistance! 17K streams so far , nothing else compares! I'm soooo confused now!
I quit youtube last year because of this struggle - "The algorithm ignores me" thing :-) It was like there is some secret I don't know and other successful youtubers know. But last month, I decided to come back, and I started creating passionate, creative, and meaningful videos - still the process is so slow (probably because I took 1 year break). BUT HERE IS MY HUGE MINDSET CHANGE: I am not thinking abouts numbers and statistics anymore because I TRULLY ENJOY WHAT AM I EXPLORING AND DOING ON MY YOUTUBR CHANNEL (you can see that in my lastest video. My point is that people always recognize that - and then channels grow because people are attracted when they see someone is passionate about something). 😊 Whatever happens, I know I am happy and fulfilled because I consider my channel as a place where I collect all my knowladge, insights and inspiration. I would say when we don't perceive youtube as a job ...it can become 😉
Yeah I knew it, I want it myself from channels… but I don’t wanna do it! I wanna do so many different things. I guess I’m taking the hard way. But it’s more important to me to do what I want than try to please others or doing the ideal things to get money. I guess you could say the niche for me is a vtuber that surprises you.

What if I am passioned exactly at providing humorous comments on random content? How to niche down on a channel that is focused on variety? Or should I start over into something more realistic?
Forget about the monetisation, concentrate on the project. Thats what I’m doing.

I have 119 subs and about 110 wh. I have a small niche, probably a too small niche.. yeah youtube is hard and my niche arent the most popular to search for.. But I also think its boring if everyone just does the same thing.. what about creating something new? Thats more fun in my opinion.. and I still wanna do videos about the same topic in 3 years time. But I have a lot to work on with my account to improve it too. Im sorry for my rant. 😊

Coming from someone who used to run various channels on and off for years before this current one, trying to get to monetization is one of the hardest things I've done on TH-cam. The influx in available music has made competition in the niche of music very high compared to five to ten years ago.
I may start running ads again, cause running a few of those every so often helps with visibility and is far easier than the amount of work it takes to achieve those same results organically.

Interestingly, this is the monetization target that I achieved first while still struggling with the subs 😅 I make short (1-2 mins) gaming videos, and so fortunate a couple of them blew up early on, helping me get 4k watch hour in just 2 months. Now, onto the 1k subs!

One thing I have found frustration with is I have two friends who have made TH-cam Partner within 90 days. I am still no where near that milestone. My frustration lies in the aspect of me actually taking time to make content. I use my green screen, I write scripts for videos and get very little success. They just react to a video and get like 40k views. Seems like reaction videos play more of an impact then anything else. Its frustrating because I want to be original in my content. Thanks for the videos and insight.
I agree that having a clear value proposition for every video is important, but what about creativity and experimentation? Do creators risk alienating their audience if they deviate too much from their established niche?

Yes, they do BUT... everyone starts out experimenting 100% of the time because they have to. Often your successes come from experimentation. It's how you grow as a creator. It just has to be in moderation once you have an audience.
