  • Please, Please Me
    The Beatles
Last night i said these words to my girl
I know you never even try girl
Come on, come on, come on ,come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Please, please me oh yeah, like I please you
You don´t need me to show the way love
Why do I always have to say love
Come on (come on), come on (come on)
Come on (come on), come on (come on)
Please, please me oh yeah, like I please you
I don´t want to sound complaining
But you know there´s always rain in my heart
I do all the pleasing with you
It´s so hard to reason with you
Oh yeah, why do you make me blue?
Last night i said these words to my girl...
I know you never even try girl
Come on (come on), come on (come on)
Come on (come on), come on (come on)
Please, please me oh yeah, like I please you

Tim Burr Anybody who says he is a mediocre drummer need only watch live videos of them from the early days like this. What he played wasn’t terribly complex, but was unique due to his being left handed and playing a right handed kit. Live he tore it up. The version of Boys on Anthology 1 is a great example of that.

The song is music history. It was the Beatles first hit record, in February 1963 in UK, a completely Lennon composition, which he composed 1961. Un unconventional powerful melody with an increasing tension. The descending first notes are exact the same as the beginning of the Westminster bells ringing. When Lennon was a little boy he loved to go to church and listen to the divine sevice. Afterwards he used to improvise anthem melodies. But the "..come on ..." bit has an enthusiastic ascending melody. The climax is the octave run in the middle part "...it´s so hard to reason with YOU...". Wonderful. A break with the earlier pop music.

@@engineerSE1 All throughout 1963 George Martin and Brian Epstein had been trying to get Capitol Records to release the Please Please Me Album in America. They could never get them to take it so they went to smaller US Labels like Swan and Vee-Jay that didn't have the same distribution scale as Capitol but got the Beatles out there in America. They were still seen as a curiosity more than a groundbreaking phenomenon until I Want to Hold Your Hand slipped through from a flight attendant who got a copy in England, brought it back to the States with her, and got it played on a local radio station, all without a contract. It blew the phone lines at the radio station up off the hook. Then Capitol HAD to sign them and pick up their albums. The rest is history.

This is one of my favorite stories to tell that points out the power of The Beatles above and beyond the mania that swept the world in 1964. My dad in the early sixties managed a radio station (WGOK) in Mobile, Alabama and I was able to get all of the records that were sent to the station as promotional copies. As a result, I had so many records that I was notorious among my friends for playing only a small part of even the biggest hits much to their chagrin. I couldn't play them all the way through after all because I had so many to go through and time just wouldn't permit. One day, however, and I only realized the full implications after THEY became the heroes of the world's youth and most adults for that matter, I put on a new Vee Jay release, "Please, Please Me" by The Beattles (it was misspelled on the label) and found myself listening to the whole song! It quickly became a song I could not stop playing! Why wasn't this song a hit I asked myself. Even the flip side (I believe it was "Thank You, Girl") was played over and over and LOVED! Then, I received another Vee Jay release "From Me to You" and again, although it was not a hit I found it irresistible and it too was played start to finish ALL THE TIME! Only later did I come to realize that this Beatlemania was not something people joined into because it was cool to be a part of the mob scene phenomena of it all, but something that was not to be resisted because it was tangibly, magically, great stuff to be reckoned with! Therefore, it is with pride that I look back at how they were Fab with me even before they released Meet the Beatles! Of course, afterwards they re-released these Vee Jay singles and the world knew what I had discovered as a 14 year old boy In 1963!

Even in the beginning they were extremely good songwriters and musicians. RIngo's drumming, Paul's bass line, George's little riffs, and John's vocals are all on point. Im not really a big fan of the Beatles first several albums but there are a few songs that stand out. Please Please Me is one of them and its a fantastic song.

I am English and was nine when this came out. Love me do was good but when this appeared l knew they were something special. The only other time something like this happened was when l heard Abba perform SOS for the first time. Waterloo was pretty good (if you like cheesy Euro pop) but when l heard the piano figure on SOS l knew they had real talent. The difference is of course that while Abba entertained us, the Beatles were transformative. It’s hard to think of a comparison in any artistic sphere. They just knocked us out, millions of us around the world, all languages, all cultures, all classes, the educated and not so, old and young, men and women. They opened a door into something we had not seen before. We grew up with them as within a very short period they reached a pinnacle of achievement. There are many things that can be said in that respect but here is one thought. Before the Beatles, who would have imagined that a group of young men could make a number one record about loneliness and old age? And that it could be so enduring as to be instantly recognised around the world nearly 60 years later? Only the Beatles could do this. No one else even gets close

I really have to credit George's playing what we've heard as the harmonica riff in the recorded version of the song. Speaking from a musician's point of view, this video clip proves how the Beatles knew how to adapt when it was musically necessary. I'm guessing that John's playing the harmonica lead would have been drowned out by the fans' screaming(I'm sure that back then, the equipment to keep harmonicas in place were available)hence George's playing the riff, which I think worked out excellently!

Came here because I just saw the documentary "The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years". I've heard the Beatles songs all my life one way or another, either in movies as incidental music or in elevators, and even though I knew they were a phenomenon, I had absolutely no idea how far it went. It was the first and only time in history that fans reacted in that insane way. I think they were in the right place at the right time, but their music was not only influential but stood the test of time. I would recommend watching that documentary to get an idea of just how insane the world went over them, because I couldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen documented proof. Do yourself a favour and watch it because it has been part of our cultural history from the past that shaped our attitudes of the present and will carry on into the future.

@@adriennerobinson1180 As far as generic radio-friendly pop music goes, I think this is still the world's very best song in that regard. Pop songs, typically about "girls", are written to be catchy-yet-disposable unit-movers, big today and forgotten tomorrow.
But, this one is a work of art. I don't think anything else in this style of music has ever topped it, and I wonder how they wrote it--other than stumbling across it accidentally, of course, which is how it's usually done :)
