  • Midstate Massive Ultratrail 100 miles is an ultra marathon in New England where you run on Trail the whole state of Massachusetts on one continuous 100 miles ultra running. That's quite a compelling challenge proposed by Midstate Massive UltraTrail 100 miles that attracts some of the best runners on the East Coast / Beast Coast.
    Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link

    It was an amazing journey through the State right in the middle of Fall - a magnificent season in New England. With foliage and gorgeous views, this fun trail run was a major challenge but also an opportunity to connect with family, and nature which is close to home for me.
    The race was, as expected, more challenging than the elevation profile would suggest. Trail running around here are a rocky and rooty technical mess. Pair that with a sometimes minimalist course marking, and this makes for a challenging race. Ultramarathon are hard, but this is hard hard!
    Luckily, I was decently well healed from my last 100 miles - Run Rabbit Run 3 weeks ago. I can still feel I’m not 100%, but at the same time, there is no residual pain. But I have to manage my effort, as I’m planning to race my first Ironman (Waco) in only 1 week.

    Nice work getting it done despite all the issues. This brought back some memories! I live in Massachusetts, and this race in 2020 was my first 100. By the way, the reason why they use waves is to be able to move aid stations down the course in a leap-frog fashion. It is a point-to-point course, so having everyone start at once means keeping all the aids open for much longer. By having faster runners start later, they can delay opening of some of the aids a bit. Also, did you know that when you passed the tri-state marker near the end, you were in three states all at once -- Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island!

      Ah thanks! I always wondered if the waves were a vestige of the pandemic. Smart for them. One thing they did which I was in awe was if you were solo, they'd bring your drop bag along. A bit like they do in some 200+ races. Talk about VIP service!

    Great job - this is vintage and fun Simon! Although very beautiful, this race seems like it must've been pretty tough on the feet and ankles, and pretty frustrating trying to follow the trail! I bet this helped build mental toughness and resilience!

    Great job. Signed up for this race in October. Nice to see what the course looks like. Are there any spots where you think I could switch into road shoes between aid stations?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that’s a good question! You definitely had more road on the second half (can’t recall the exact aid station) but it feels there was regularly a section good portion of trails at night. Maybe more towards the end when it was daytime in my video - I think starting from the farm. But I’m not sure it’s worth it, maybe 15 miles, and you get back to trail eventually. That said, I think ai was wearing regular running shoes (just have to be careful to slip on some of those rock especially the technical downhill)

    Your videos are great and so helpful! I live in MA so I’m familiar with the gnarly trails. How would you compare the trails here to a course like Leadville?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  ปีที่แล้ว

      If we talk very broadly, my impression is that east coast trail tend to be narrower and steeper - switchback are less common and you are slowed to a walk more frequently, even on downhills. Also more roots and rocks sticking out with footing option sometimes extremely limited. On the plus side, you tend to have more tree cover and less exposure (of sun sure, but I mean exposure to steep drop off/cliff/OMG one misstep and I die). I guess the later is kinda striking especially right out of Ouray 100 this weekend which was extremely intense (41k feet of grain, technical trails, and sometimes a bit sketchy).
      If you are asking specifically for Leadville because you are racing it, I *might* be posting a course preview going in details this summer (if I find time). But overall, very runnable trails, some roots and rocks around turquoise lake (first and last 12miles) but nothing compared to east coast (just stay vigilant but you can run). There’s a short segment out of Mayqueen that is fairly technical but it’s like 1 mile maybe. Then it’s super clean until Hope Pass (if anything, the cow field out of outward bound it the most annoying, with hard to notice holes perfect to roll an ankle). Hope pass is mostly runnable, except maybe some of the backside which is steeper and a bit less clean. There are roots and rocks in general on Hope, but unless is slick/wet, you can safely keep a good pace. Finally, my wife and I were on a podcast recently focusing on logistics and crewing (Ultra Crew Hub). Maybe not the “sexiest” topic but hopefully it’s helpful in making the most of their experience and teaching the ropes of Leadville

      @@runningwithsimon Thanks for such a detailed response! I’m planning to run Leadville next summer (have a deferral bc I just wasn’t going to be fully prepared this year.) My biggest worry (aside from the altitude) has been the technicality. Your insight is super helpful!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackiederuyter1300 Great! It's certainly less technical than your average east coast trail (and if you can run the midstate trail, you should be fine). Both cutoff at Twin Lake are in my mind the main hard ones - the first require you to move efficiently around Turquoise and Elbert, and the second being able to climb Hope Pass steadily (x2). For altitude, I try getting there a couple of weeks helps a bunch but that's me being lucky enough to work remotely. It's a huge challenge otherwise for sure - I've seen really good runner struggle simply because of that.

    Congratulations!!! What a beautiful course during the best time of year! I live near this, and have been debating between this and the VT 100 for my first 100. I'm terrified of getting lost, I'm not always the most observant! 😆 Which would you recommend? Good luck on your upcoming Ironman!!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! VT100 is much easier 1) being often on road, 2) when on trails, they are easy, 3) many many many aid stations, 4) easy navigation. The main challenge is heat. Midstate is a bit harder - the trail is often too technical to run, navigation is harder (but if you have the course on your watch - unlike me - it should make that a non-issue).
      Difficulty aside - the course at midstate is prettier (although a lot of it is night time) vs. VT100 where you rarely have any views. But running with horses was very special - and I think you mentionned you are into riding?
      All and all, I'd probably lean on VT100, and save the nice foliage for a pretty hike

    • @Kelly_Ben
      @Kelly_Ben ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@runningwithsimon The horses are definitely a huge consideration for me, great memory! 😆 I think VT sounds like the better choice for this daydreaming runner, otherwise I might wind up in a totally different state! And I really do love good aid stations...
