Are HOKA Speedgoat 5 Overhype? - I ran 500 miles to Find Out
The Hoka Speedgoat 5 are some of the most iconic and popular trail and ultra running shoes. But is the hype justified or are they overhyped? In this trail running shoe review, I tested the HOKA Speedgoat 5 over 500 miles on varied terrain to get this answer!
More specifically, I used the HOKA speedgoat 5 for 3 different ultra marathon. I ran Zion Ultra Marathon 100 miles, Mt Fuji 100 Miles, and Cocodona 250 miles. I used two pairs, although most mileage were on the teal ones. As you can tell, this means I tested the hoka speedgoat in varied trail - from sandy desert, to rocky slabs, and muddy / rocky / rooty /wet trails.
In this review, I go through the reasons why the Hoka speedgoat 5 is a great trail running shoe, but also, some of its limitations. I hope it's helpful!

Of course your data and presentation are wonderful, but I think it has more to do with your character and appreciation for your wife and your fellow human beings! Thought of you today because I was definitely more of a pickle rather than chocolate ice cream!! Have diligently been doing zone two runs and the benefits are real. I have wide feet and even though the wide fit SG5 are still too narrow in the toe box, they stretch and are the only shoe that i have found that works for 100 milers and longer. As long as I tape my little toe I get no blisters, they are comfortable, stable and grip well in everything except deep wet mud. I did a 200 miler in the alps last year and my feet were the same at the finish as at the start, this year I am doing a 400 miler so I will have a second pair in my drop bag. Fwiw I don't use gaiters and hardly ever get anything in the shoe. Now the 6 is released I'm planning to look for discounted 5's and buy more of them.

    Wow! I have never managed to wear the Speedgoat down like that. My last pair look almost like new after 660km (410 miles). I guess the surface that you run on matter a lot.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I think the surface was a huge factor here - both zion and cocodona being more abrasive (not sure if that's the term, but basically, hard surface). Maybe also racing wear them down faster per miles because you go slower => smaller stride length => more steps per miles.

    Great video. A good part B would be to talk about cramping and salts and vitamins. You mentioned salt tablets but not why. Also tailwind is a full food formula, which should be mentioned, it’s really hard to drink as you feel stuffed. For longer runs it’s really good to pack bagels or sandwiches with salt butter, ham etc, salty food that’s more complex to breakdown, not just gels. Gels are very expensive and if that’s all you have you’re very likely to get the runs. If all you have is gels and you feel wobbly, there’s nothing else to eat, so having solid food means you have a mix of different food. Someone described long runs as having a non-stop picnic and that really changed things for me in a positive way

    Hey Simon. What do you think about the periodisation in strength sessions? For example: You start off-season with full body workout. After that you go for a Maximum Strengt, next you do a Power; then a Plyometric before the race season(specific traning or explosive sessions). The weight is adjusted to maximal strenght (for example 30% of MS)

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I think it's a good idea. I don't do it myself because I have no off season, so I don't want to comment on things I don't do myself. But it makes a lot of sense. We also often say more broadly to train from less specific long before the race, to very specific closer to a race (e..g, hills, same trails, etc). Applies for everything.

    Hey Simon. Thank you for inspiring me to sign up for next year's Sedona 125. I was wondering about the oxygen level for the second half of the race, considering you were traversing at 7K above sea level. Did not pose a challenge for you? Would it be a factor for someone that resides on sea level??

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Rafael! I actually live at sea level, and did not do any acclimation for either this or Cocodona 250 this year. I don't know how much it affected me when we're on the plateau at ~7k after Sedona itself. Maybe it affected - actually probably - but it's not as obvious. But I certainly felt it very clearly when climbing Elden. Out/short of breath. Getting really tired at the slightest uphill. So yes it's a factor - but I think the eat on the first day is an even bigger factor, and that's easier to prepare for. The altitude is tricky because the best thing to prepare for an altitude race (and really the only thing I ever do) is to go up there at altitude ahead of the race. But this early in the season, mountains are still covered in snow and mostly not accessible. But that's what I (try) to do for a race like Leadville where altitude is a huge factor

    I don’t run (maybe a mile here and there) and I hike 5-7 miles per week, but I’m interested in ultra running for no explainable reason. Where would I even start? I think the “impossibility” might be why I’m intrigued. Also I have the speedgoat 5s lol.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I myself started from mostly hiking. And not regular hiking - more sporadic (I'd go on a trip - hike a bunch, then not much for a while). I think first for me it was slowly but surely I was increasing mileage on my day hike. Not with the endgoal of distance or anything, but simply because I wanted to see more. Maybe a 9 miles hike seemed like a lot, but next trip there's this 11 miles that looks cool - ok I can do it. What looked like a crazy day - I remember an 18 miles in particular - would eventually not even give me a pause. And occasionally, because of time constraint (say for example I know forecast is afternoon thunderstorm and I want to be off the pass) or just opportunity (a non-technical not-steep dirt road downhill) - I'd add some jogging. Next thing you know - jogging is more regular, and that opens up possibility in terms of hike. Now a 30-35 miles day is possible - not fully running of course, especially that there's always a lot of climb, but it unlocked what would be multi-day backpacking trip which became a tough day hike. And on the rare occasion I could take a full week off from work, that'd become a trail fest. I don't have the numbers, but I would think I'd often cover 150-200 miles in 7-8 days. Anyhow - that's about when I started more officially trail and ultrarunning. And I guess the point is that it took a lot of time and just slowly ramping up. You don't necessarily notice the increase but it's there. I know a lot of people came in more from a running background, but not so much for me

    • @Op3rate
      @Op3rate 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@runningwithsimon I love that, it’s interesting as I feel on a super similar early stage path to what you described. Also in socal. Anyways, ran 4.5 miles today, basically a very slow jog, basically walking speed. Kept trying to go slower like you’ve said many times and finish fresh as my goal at the end. That’s the farthest I’ve ever ran or jogged. And it wasn’t hard following your advice, finished fresh and definitely could have done more. Mind blowing to me but here we are. Thank you for your videos and helping to make my crazy ideas seem a little more achievable!

    I've been hiking my local state park down here in Southern California for maybe like 15-20 years now, and I only now have finally gotten into using trekking poles on all my hikes. I used to just suffer through the downhills, but a few years ago I hurt the tendons in my knee a bit so I really became more cautious about it. Now I'm getting more comfortable at using poles to absorb some of the impact, as well as having a more "floaty" form that involves more core strength but dampens impact a lot more. I'm now up to where I can handle downhill sections up to about a mile in length or so, makes such a huge difference.

      I'd love to try them - I don't have a pair yet. I've been doing my best to harass Hoka to send me one pair. Failing that, I'll get some pairs later this summer and test them. Do you prefer them over the 5? Newer version are sometimes better, ...but sometimes worse. For me the achilles thing is the biggie - almost nothing else matters (although I'd wish they would make them wider...)

    • @Hypno_Holly
      @Hypno_Holly 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@runningwithsimon these are way better than the 5. I was really pleasantly surprised. They have such good support at the back (I hadn’t noticed this until you mentioned it in your video). They cup the back of your foot so nicely. They were a bit stiffer to put on at first and I worried that they wouldn’t have enough cushion… But once you’re in them and wearing them, the cushion is so nice… I actually couldn’t wear the fives because I found them a bit too tight they have a lot more room and are wider. The cushioning is actually better… It’s stiffer when you first put it on but then once you run in it, it’s totally different… I love these shoes a lot and will be wearing them more now… Have you tried the Hoka Stinson? They are really nice for the hundred mile race as they are so soft… You don’t feel a thing… The only problem is they don’t have as much grip on the bottom… They would be good for a 200 miler for sure though.

    Great watch, can I ask, did you have the map screen on all the time though? My experience of the Vertix 1 is that the map screen reduces battery life and it would be good to know by how much. I tend to just leave it on maps the whole race, I don;t want to faff around changing screens to see if I'm going left or right at an upcoming junction. The Vertix 1 is a great watch too, I went on a running holiday in Chamonix for two weeks with it... and I didn't even take my charging cable! Thats the confidence you get from a Coros. Having said that I think you should probably compare it to the latest fenix to give Garmin a chance next time.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No I didn't have the map screen on at all time - just when checking if I'm still on track and or to figure out a junction. And you're right, my understanding is that it drains battery. Not sure how much however, but there's going to be processing power to generate and display a map. Same thing with garmin obviously. I also turn off the auto-black-light thing. It's practical, but I know it will drain battery so I'd rather just click it when I need it.

  • @Go_Irish

    Simon, absolutely love the channel but really disappointed with this video. I think your results would be very similar the opposite way had you used an old model/heavily used Coros and a brand new Garmin out of the box. Additionally, it seems really disingenuous to present this as an unbiased review considering you got it for free and getting kickbacks for purchases. I don't have any issues with you being supported by Coros, but this is absolutely not an unbiased or even fair (old vs new) comparison. You should change the title to "New Coros vs Old Warn Out Garmin" .

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the feedback, and I'm sorry to disappoint you on this. I've tried to be clear that I received it for free - literally any review you'll see online is in the same situation. The difference is that I'd be surprised if I even end up making the equivalent of $1 per hour I've spent making this video - whereas bigger channel make probably in the $10k... As for old vs. new, again the point was more to see what you get with an upgrade - mimicking a situation most of us are in which is you already have a watch, what do you get if you buy a new one. I never said coros is better than garmin. I didn't even say a single bad thing about my fenix 6. AND I pointed out that cost will be different so that could be a reason to go for an older watch. But sorry to disappoint you, I'll try to do better

    So lately, I’ve been running maybe like five miles or so. Start off really strong, have lots of hills in my area.. With the heat, I end up doing a lot of stopping and going. Is that frowned upon during distance running? I know I have to get mentally fit also

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "Frowned upon" is a bit strong - you do whatever you want! But if you want to improve your running, I think the general consensus is that if you can't run the distance, try to do cycles run / walk - ideally with no stopping. If you need to stop, maybe include more walking or do shorter cycles next time. And eventually you reduce the time walking in those cycles, until eventually you can run the whole thing

    Very cool review! I think they are very cool, however they screwed up my toes a bit (my toe joints were scratching each others, so I got pain and struggled with bad toes for a week or two after using them for 90min straight..Solved now tho with the Altra Mont Blanc! You should give them a go if ya haven't already! Very wide toe box!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, you saw my toes too... I hope they fix that with the SG6. For me just not being as narrow would probably solve everything. Might give the Mont Blanc a shot - how's the back of the feet? I know for Nora the speedgoat is a game changer - it messes up her toes, but that's true with any shoe for her. For me, the speedgoat were super helpful for my heel, but I'm not as sensitive as her on that, so I could try the Mont Blanc. I already like their lone peak - although mostly for hiking or <50 milers (for longer, the midsole isn't enough and my feet hurt)

    • @pexcii
      @pexcii 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@runningwithsimon Yeah, they looked nasty xD Hopefully yeah! They do make their shoes very narrow, and that is really annoying. The mont blanc is pretty nice, the back will ur achilles in place, might be risky with blisters for ya. Also u gotta glue the shoe sole onto the floor of the shoe. It will slip very far and around your toes if u do not, esp in steep hills with wet shoes.

    Tried speedgoats when I was just hiking mountains. I loved how comfortable they were on even/straight incline ground, but whenever my foot was off camber they struck my ankles. Maybe I'll try the 6's when they go on sale, cause I really loved the cushioning.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't really use them for hiking myself. I know it sounds like it should be similar, but for me it's a different category. I really like my Altra Lone Peak when hiking (but not when running too far - midsole/cushion just isn't enough for me).

  • @michelleharnett1351

    I totally agree with your assessment that they are a trail/road shoe - which is largely how I use them. However, I hate that soles wear so fast. For technical, off road stuff I prefer the Hoka Mafate - very tough in rocky technical terrain, and better grip in the mud, in my opinion. Edited to add - I have wide feet and wear the "narrow" fit but I do size up half a size - no more lost toenails. Downside, I've just sized myself out of the women's range, lol.

    • @runningwithsimon

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think it's fine. Black canyon is not so bad. I used altra lone peak last time, and they are also not the sturdiest (actually I think even more malleable and less toe protection). It's not the most technical course but you do have treacherous rocks so you have to stay vigilant. Also, you'll have some river crossing so you'll likely get your feet wet (making it harder to not get blisters)
