  • The Midstate Massive 100 Ultra Marathom is conquered and in the books! I'm rocking the dinner plate of a belt buckle with pride! The Midstate Massive 100 Ultramarathon is a 100-mile race that starts in NH, goes through MA, touches CT, and then j-turns back in MA to end in Douglas state park. There are about 11,000 feet of elevation gain with the bulk of the climbing in the first 30 miles where we climb up a hefty ski mountain.
    Didn't hit my time goal, but very proud of my performance and excited to get back to the grind. Many issues popped up in the night but we adapted and worked through them. Please enjoy my journey with the Midstate Massive 100.

    You should come out and do the Breakneck Point Trail Marathon in Fishkill NY in May. There's around 9k of elevation gain and it's super technical.

    "Chasing people down, which I have no business doing" . . . Bwaaa ha ha ha, my new axiom or racing! Tailwind is in my racing nutrition kit. Also do the 200/400 calorie intake. Also use Skratch on big days. Love your analysis on pacing, efficiency, and "not burning matches" on the big climb (Burning Matches is how I learned it from a IM pro, you only have a book of so many, don't waste them!). Preserving that deep muscle and energy budget for when the "wheels come off", just like you mention. Still smiling at mile 70! Purely mental at that point. Discussing the places that are on fire, and you can't figure out why. I don't even use that part to walk/run, why is it burning? No visible blisters! Amazing, that speaks volumes about how much you pay attention to what your gear does for/to you. The Nausea and GI issues, I feel for you, they always set in, mainly due to dehydration on my part, but then you have no desire to eat. The only thing I can take in at that point is ice . . . just chew on ice. Potato chips, for GI . . . gonna have to try that. You should be proud! Outstanding report, outstanding accomplishment Wayne, really awesome! Looking forward to the breakdowns and further analysis. Tell your Crew Member I said hi. F yeah! Discipline is king! You have to put in the grind, day after day, to finish a 100 like that! No discipline, no drive, no finish!

    • @WayneCapacillo
      @WayneCapacillo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hell yeah! The potato chips saved my life on that race. I might try doing mainly liquid calories and minimal real food at aid stations. If my body can handle it...it would be way less to carry and potentially less GI issues. Consistency has made the biggest difference in my running. It's crazy how much better I feel with just a year of quality training. Very excited to see what a couple more years of training might do! WE'RE TAKING HEADS OUT THERE!!!

    • @brrrtnerd2450
      @brrrtnerd2450 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do a mostly liquid right now, with Untapped Maple Waffles at intervals on the bike and run. Still got dehydrated though on the run, gotta figure that out!

    Contrats!!! And nice stache! Your #2 and #3 really sound like when I rely too much on carbs so I think you're right. I typically slowly move from gel/gummies + gatorade towards salty/fatty/solid. So for example, grilled cheese, bacon, avocado, chips, ramen noodles, chips, peanuts. Appetite kinda guides when to switch, and what specifically to grab at the aid station - with the caveat that not eating anything is not option, so let's pick what feels the least gross.

    • @WayneCapacillo
      @WayneCapacillo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      100%! I wish I could carry around sushi or get it at aid stations lol! My filipino ass stomach loves to run on rice...so maybe I need to find a good fried rice recipe for my crew to carry or something!

    Love how you emphasized the importance on having a crew member (or members) that really know you and know how to work with you. Haven't run an ultra yet, so I'm filing this one way for when I do. Also appreciated how you mentioned your focus on heart rate and how that meant making running alone so you weren't distracted. Another great tip! Really great recap. Subscribed. Keep the videos coming.

      @@WayneCapacillo ha! Yea man, I don’t know if you saw it but there was a bear with shiny eyes painted on a tree in front of a residential house. It’s often asked if a bear craps in the woods….but I can tell you a runner almost crapped in the street when I saw that damn thing at 2am! Be safe!
