According to Tyson Hesse (someone deeply involved in the film), the “I’ll show you the way” line being there was not actually an intentional reference to the meme. They only realized it afterwards.

The Chaos Emerald and Master Emerald is a little different here in this movie, but I like the concept that the Chaos Emeralds first broke out of the Master Emerald.
I just find it odd that Knuckles just… remade the Master Emerald after the Chaos Emeralds separated from it and scattered? Like, isn’t the movie lore that the Chaos Emeralds combined became the Master Emerald? Apart from that I also like the whole concept of them in this movie.
@@CorvusnTel I figured the Master emerald fragments had absorbed enough energy from the Chaos Emeralds to be its own thing sort of able to sustain itself. Plus being a fusion of them to focus all the individual seven makes more sense the master emerald as a controller.
@@CorvusnTel there's... Alot of little things like that, that goes unexplained. Like I KNOW knuckles can fix the master emerald from the games, but everyone else would be confused. The resident evil movies are riddled with stuff like this that annoy the hell out me, but didn't bug me here.

I laughed so damn hard on that scene where Eggman is taking the Master Emerald and he's betraying Knuckles, I don't know what the English version said since I watched it on Latin American Spanish, but here he said "everything equals to...poop" then Sonic and Knuckles looks at him astonished

"It was mostly cgi" kinda true, but also they actually did build a lot of the sets! Jim carrey actually stands in a room full of mushrooms, and labyrinth zone was also made for this movie
I was trying to find a comment about this! They try to use practical effects whenever possible - they even had real wolves on sleds for one set piece

"I don't know how they'll raise the stakes for the third one" Eclipse Cannon is the logical conclusion to the movies if you ask me. I don't think they could go anywhere from there, so at that point I think they'd have to wrap it up for the movies.
The really basic power of friendship takeaway can be remarkably solid a lot of the time, I agree.
I mean there's so many end-world type scenarios in Sonic that they could not run out. sure not all of them are good, but they haven't even introduced Metal Sonic, so things like Perfect Chaos, Metal Madness and Eggmanland are still things that could happen

Imagine the next movie with Shadow as a rival like Knuckles but the big bad being Metal Sonic
I kinda can't believe the post-credits scene. It feels too deep into the Sonic franchise, like the studio wouldn't have the courage to do it, but they did it, and I think it's awesome.

@@fernandovasconez-taylor3144 It's less that Shadow himself is too deep, and more "Project Shadow", which they mention in the post-credits scene. Which basically means the third movie is going to be dealing with government shooting a child dead, illegal experiments done in secret driving Robotnik's grandfather, who loses everything and is driven to insanity to perform genocide on the planet, in big part because of what the government did to push him there for their own greed and desire to weaponize, and the death of a child leading to Shadow's (who is an illegal experiment the government wants to cover-up) desire for vengence against humanity. The post credit scene specifically mentioning not just Shadow, but Project Shadow basically means, "Yeah, we're tackling that shit."
@@fernandovasconez-taylor3144 If they give him the story of Adventure 2, that game's from an era in the franchise's history where I guess people might start to consider the games getting weird, with too many characters, a plot that starts getting to complicated. Shadow does show up a lot nowadays, but he seems to be reduced to just edgy black hedgehog, lacking the baggage of his SA2 story.
Metal Sonic seemed like what they'd go with before ever introducing Shadow (could still happen in movie 3 I guess).
The first movie was about Sonic and... family. It was good, but ditching that in favor of Knuckles and Tails and that whole wedding scene was SO much better than personal drama.
It had good references too. Knuckles being able to crush shards of the master emerald back into the whole thing again is a major plot point of Sonic Adventure 2, G.U.N. the organization from Sonic Adventure 2 being introduced, the chaos emeralds being introduced was a setup for Shadow being introduced since he uses Chaos Emeralds in his story... etc. This movie leaned a LOT into setting up the third movie as a Sonic Adventure 2 based one, so expect Boobs the Bat being introduced alongside Shadow in Sonic 3.
Tails and Knuckles also look really natural! You can tell the movie was made AFTER they fixed Sonic 1, they look more like their game counterparts than Sonic does.
If you know the Sonic games you know how Knuckles’ character arc is gonna end Knuckles has been tricked by Robotnik multiple time before.
I'm also expecting Rouge and maybe Amy to appear in the next movie. Sonic 2 sets up so many SA2 plot points, like the Chaos Emeralds being out there, Shadow's introduction, G.U.N. being established.

Obviously not enough to go "hey, maybe I'll try and give some other Sonic games a shot", he's always been vocal about how Sonic as a whole isn't for him. I guess it's moreso seeing him enjoy the world and characters more, even if it's a different continuity from the games of course.

I prefer reviews that AREN'T paid off infact.

People like theQuartening and Geeks and Gamers try and bully studios into axing minorities and women from their films all the time, and despite not watching the Sonic movies they've celebrated them as the greatest things ever solely because it proved that bullying studios into doing things works. God, I still remember the acting as though the Sonic move and Birds of Prey were a cultural battleground because BOP had women in it, it was hilarious!
@@Peasham Well it wasn't those goofy bastards because it was the entire public and fan community who hated the original design of Sonic. When they redesign it because the producers heard the responses and actually cared, even when Ben Schwartz (voice of Movie Sonic) admits nobody doesn't really care about video game movies because of bad reputation of VGM, but by that responses they actually did cared on changing the design. They knew what Paramount picked the design of Sonic looked too far. It's the same thing Paramount done with Transformers and TMNT with Michael Bay where they never cared about making the cartoon characters look like the cartoon characters. Even Travis Knight had to fight for making those G4 designs into the Bumblebee movie, and completely reboot the series to know what fans and the public actually want. Not from those capitalist retards. The fans. So they delay the film, hired Tyson Hesse to be the head designer of the Sonic characters, and redo Sonic's scenes with the $5M redesign. It made the experience a very less freaky because it looked like Sonic.
Even after this movie, no studio really tried what Sonic did. I don't see other studios doing this move after that, no matter the crowd's responses or those goofy retard's. It didn't prove anything because the studios still ignore their responses. Everybody was happy that Sonic looks like Sonic, and wants the character to have a better reputation. Well if you didn't know BoP fans were actually making tweets on creating boycott Sonic because they saw it as a box office threat. They want Birds of Prey to make a lot than Sonic. Problem with Birds of Prey, not because of woman. It's how the film focus on Harley Quinn rather than the actual Birds of Prey characters. Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress. And the costumes looked very cheap and not comic book accurate. With Warner Bros screwing up Cassandra Cain as this kid-type because Warner Bros watch Deadpool movies to think they can do that since Suicide Squad. Even when BoP wasn't do very well, they had to re-title it to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey because of the responses. It didn't make it better because it was way too late because it's marketed to be what it is from the start instead of that.

The thing about these two Sonic films is that they are FUNNY in spite of Sonic.
The jokes in these two films stand on their own.

It helps that Shwartz is a genuinely funny person, so he definitely played a huge part in the humour of these folm.

Brooo, I don’t know why, but there were certain parts of the movie where I’d play the song in my head while watching whatever was happening on screen, and it made those moments so much cooler! But yeah, if it actually played in the next movie, especially since it’ll have Shadow, that would be awesome
Man, the part where Alex Kidd appeared in the *Sega logo* was rad.
Jokes aside, I hope the Sonic 3 and the upcoming Streets of Rage movie from the same director will be good as well.

I didn’t even think of that scene Vinny having a facepalm moment as them leaning into memes, it wasn’t really shoved my face like the Sanic drawing in the first movie to really notice
The Sanic drawing was kinda genius if you ask me. People didn't even know it was a meme because of the context it was used on. Only us socially inept people from the internet knew the context of the drawing
A few things:
They didn't mess too much with the lore. The Owls and "Longclaw" is new, but the Echidnas having the Master Emerald and using it as a weapon is more or less canon.
It borrows stuff mostly from Sonic Adventure.
If you like the characters and their dynamic, throw on some Sonic Boom sometime, in the background when you're getting stuff done. Great chewing gum show, lots of laughs.
The writing of that, and these films, is sorta on par.
i agree but i'd say boom is a lot more self aware and gets really meta sometimes

I was thinking about the first film's original trailer lately. It's so weird going from "this Sonic is so cursed, this is going to be a disaster" to having some faith that the third film won't make you-know-what from the stinger a total meme. Funny how things go.

I was happy they were shipping off the humans to Hawaii so sonic could just have a fun little family friendly adventure. Then they gave them plots anyway lol
When all the characters are in this big adventure then suddenly it cuts to this wedding and the wacky hijinks of the scorned bride I was just confused as to why they were giving focus to that until they brought the plot strands together at the middle or so

its kinda nice to see that vinny doesn't know about the franchise like i do. im going into it completely blind like him and im so happy that i get to experience those stories (i remember being obsessed with sonic when i was younger, i only watched the 80s cartoons though and i was only the characters. never the games like at all. my brother was the video game nerd and then i became the video game nerd. kinda weird.
As an Sonic fan this movie knew exactly what it wanted to be; for the hardcore fans but also for kids who never heard of Sonic before and\or just watched the first movie before.

it's very fun to see young kids getting into sonic and all the characters
I'm not a big Sonic person, but it is definitely a good, fun, and dare I say... cute, movie. Some moments were a little...lol eye-rolling like Jim Carrey flossing and "being hip", but that cringe is also fun in a kind of way

I bust a gut laughing when sonic flossed in the first movie. I was drunk and absolutely not expecting it. I feel like the flossing is them poking fun at themselves
I am very happy to know I wasn't the only one who noticed the Gotta Go Fast Sanic reference near the start of the movie. I saw the head and I was like "that looks exactly like the lesser known form of sanic" but no one else even understood what I meant because it wasn't shoved in your face like the straight up sanic drawing from the first movie.
Also I know this is a long shot and unlikely. But at some point in a future movie's mid credits scene, it would be absolutely hilarious if Vinny said, 'Weed Girl'.

As someone who’s never played a sonic game and has zero investment in the franchise, I’m glad the general reception has been good enough for them to make a sequel, and that the sequel to most people is just as good - we don’t have enough “actually good” video game movies, so I’m always glad to see them do well
I really enjoyed this movie, even if I'm not really a Sonic fan. You can tell that everyone in the movie had fun and the people that worked on the movie love the games. Really my only criticism is that the human characters felt out of place besides Eggman.
I know you don't really do Sonic but I'm glad you gave the movies a chance.
Sonic 2 was the friends we made all along the way
Since the next movie will be adapting SA2,i feel like the Shadow and Robotnik lore will be the perfect way to cap off this trilogy and an excellent final role for Jim Carrey if he does end up retiring.
That being said,if Rouge is also a character there,which she likely will,the internet will go completely apeshit. Personally I'm wondering what will be the final time of the "Movie Rouge porn any%" speedrun
Hey Vinny. The producers of the Sonic movies are making a Streets of Rage movie next. John wick writer is doing the script.
The interesting thing about the mid credits reveal is there are actually a surprising number of people that don't know who Shadow is, and have been talking about how cute and kid-friendly these movies have been. And then there's people that have only seen Sonic Boom and think he's going to be like that. If Jeff Fowler commits to doing a proper adaptation of this, those people are in for a major shock.
As many MANY people will say, this is where the Sonic franchise gets dark. Here's a bit of information about Shadow for people that might be unaware, because I really think context is important. Don't read any further if you don't want spoilers, because this could all potentially come up in movie 3.
Shadow is a character that was created 50 years ago in an incredibly illegal experiment by Gerald Robotnik (remember when Jim Carrey mentioned things worse than death in the first movie?). As far as Shadow's personality goes, I'd probably put it somewhere between MewTwo from Pokemon and Piccolo from Dragonball (not King Poccolo, but the Piccolo that trains Gohan). He's not edgy as many people have given him a reputation of being. He's more broody, almost like a dark knight kind of character. He has difficulty making friends, and he almost never smiles unless things are going well for him.
The PROBLEM is that in some storylines, he can be a huge Mary Sue. He wasn't originally designed that way, but many writers over the years have sort of Mary Sued him up. In the hands of the right writer, he can be really good though. I'm pretty sure that Jeff Fowler won't screw this up, because Shadow is his favorite character. But given how powerful he is, it can be easy to do this without even realizing it. Anyway, as far as his actual power is concerned, I'd definitely say he's more powerful than Sonic.
Let's put it this way. Shadow is the 'prototypical dark brooding super character that you see alot in an anime' (to paraphrase another youtuber). He could pretty much take on entire armies by himself. He's that powerful.
And the reason he's this powerful is because he's immortal. This is something that ALMOST never comes up, but is canon. Shadow was basically infused with the DNA of an alien god. This is a thing in Sonic (it's called Black Doom). This makes him powerful to the point where he has to wear Limiters. Otherwise his powers could go out of control and not only kill him, but potentially blow away the planet. That's how powerful he is. How they got the DNA is a whole other thing that I'm not going to go into because it's long and complicated, and this part might not even be covered in the movie.
Eventually, the government realized that this was all going on, and sent GUN agents to put a stop to it. Shadow was friends with a young girl named Maria, who was likely somewhere between 12 and 14 years old. Well, one thing leads to another and she evacuates him from the ARK facility. In the process, she is shot dead in front of him. This coupled with a bout of amnesia causes Shadow to swear vengeance against humanity.
And this will probably lead us into the plot of the movie.
So you know... FOR KIDS!!!
Just watched the movie, the humour didn't land for most of it for me but the ending was great, and I also liked the friendship between the three Sonic characters.

I feel like the wedding scenes were completely unecessary. The introduction to G.U.N. was fine, but the whole girl power scene afterwards I feel like completely de-railed the plot for no good reason.

It has a little something for everyone
There are elements of the movie I could have done without. At one point Robotnik says "There are good people on both sides" dating when the script was written, and I don't think any single person cares about the weirdly long resolution of the wedding.
That said, they've paid a lot of attention to detail. Doctor Robotniks Mean Bean Machine shows up, Splash Hill from Sonic 4 shows up, all the GUN hardware has Sonic Adventure 2 ID tags on it. Lots of big dumb references for big dumb nerds like me.
I had know idea what that “Both sides” line was about at all, and wouldn’t doubt some other people not knowing either. Especially as years go by. I doubt that’ll “date” the movie at all.

The target audience is obviously going to be children (who may I remind you were born AFTER the last good sonic game, or after the golden age of sonic) who probably haven't even played a sonic game in their tiny 8 years of existence. But, the movie does cater to the veteran fans who didn't give up on sonic and Sega after all these long harsh years, and is an absolute joy to watch. It pretty much follows the plot of the adventure games, and I like that because it's something I can notice. It's up there with my Favourite movies of all time not because it is a cinematic masterpiece or deserving of an Oscar for being objectively good, but because I thoroughly enjoy watching them with my partner, who is also a sonic fan. I had more fun watching these movies than the star wars sequels or the halo TV show; two franchises I admittedly outright prefer to sonic (although sonic is still close to my heart). Even after endgame and the MCU train derailed, sonic still tops anything released in the last few years, even higher than no way home. For me, it's up there with batman and dune as my Favourite recently released films among a slim few others.
If you like sonic even partially, you will absolutely adore this series. If it becomes a trilogy then great, it's a perfect stopping point. But if it becomes a whole cinematic universe, I'm just excited to see more of the big sonic characters appearing in a live action movie. It's the love note from sega and the sonic team to fans that has been sorely missing; and vice versa, it is the best thing to come out of sega and sonic in a LOOOOONG time.
This film and the rediscovery of my love of sonic is what has made me start to like sonic and Sega over Mario and Nintendo now, because sega seems to care a lot more about the fans and fan-made content that Nintendo would just slap a Cn'D on. Nintendo seem threatened by their fans, but sega KNOW that there are only a few veteran fans out there who didn't stop loving them or sonic, and they don't take them for granted. I don't love this film for its cinematography or the merits of the film itself exclusively, but mostly for the faith and love that this movie sends to the fans. The pure act of them redesigning sonic for the first movie proves that they do care, they do take criticism to heart, and they genuinely want to give something good to the community. Yet, so many people missed this when the movie released. It didn't occur to them that sega did a 'no man's sky' because they genuinely cared.
I put it to question that this film and the upcoming Mario movie have very different ethics, despite who may earn more money over the other.

This movie was more enjoyable since it’s more like an actual Sonic story and not like the first film and the cliche “cartoon in the real world/fish out of water” movie.
Better review than the one by the blue muppet.
