If what he means is the safety valve is populist political candidates in the pockets of your crony capitalists, while people sleep and die in your dusty shit and piss covered streets, then he's absolutely right.
Mob rule continues to live in your so-called democracy. And it ain't pretty.

Now it is 2021. Looking at these two great nations, India and China, I have to say that India has a system that as long as you, the Indian citizens, are fine with its chaos and slowness and the vote ballots as well, it is perfectly fine for them. While China is a nation that has a clear goal of what it wants to become and put every efforts to become one. China doesn't allow time to slip during the process. The mentality difference might be the biggest between these two nations. I would say, we don't need to compare them. Every nation shall choose what works best for themselves.

@fishface494 you might want to get your facts right about the British colonization. The British did not give us EVERY THING. They took more from us than what they gave us. India was one of the richest economies in the world, accounting for more than 27% of global GDP in 1700. The British arrived in 1757. They managed to reduce it to less than 2% of global GDP and threw us into poverty when they left in 1947. And yes, the railways were introduced by the British into India, but at our cost. The railways were used by the British to transport textiles and spices from all around India to the ports, so that they could be transported back to Britain. Indians were forced to pay huge taxes to the British, so that's what paid for the developments, not the Brits themselves. And obviously, Indian labour was used. So most of the things were built at our cost while they reaped the benefits. The British totally destroyed India.
If you are a British, you'd never know this, because your dark colonial history has been deliberately kept hidden from you guys. I'm sure your history textbooks don't have it, but it's all out there if you'd wish to enlighten yourself.

I also agree with him that nobody's going to rule the world anymore the way the US did. Not only is this sort of thing going out of fashion, the material resources required are simply no longer there.
And I also agree with him that it's dumb to 'develop' your country just to 'keep up' with another. One's first priority should not be that, but the *well-being* of one's countrymen.

the Indian "influence" is mainly due to 1. English fluency of those elite Indian but not the mass of the Indian in the culture (where 70-80% are not English fluency at all) and the overemphasizd on English has hindered the development of India as a country (only benefiting Indian as individual); 2. India (and its culture) is seen as a unimportance actor to enjoy but China, as more competitive on par with the west, the west try all its might to suppress the culture. Once China is more economically advanced, the culture will be envy by the world (like Japan in the 80's and Korea in the 2000)

@@adityaprasai India needs robust, commanding, and slightly imposing leaders that respect democratic values. I am a big fan of Dr. Tharoor but I don't think he's fit to be a PM of a country whose cultural values are being threatened continuously since independence (before independence as well) in the form of conversions, communist political activism, religion- based terrorism, etc as he's too liberal in his views and would give a free pass and neglect these small- small nuances (which in turn become an active volcano ready to erupt at any time). He has not shown the quality of being a leader who can take hard decisions when required. In this era, we need leaders who can take hard decisions without any fear of international pressure or condemnation because to them the country, the culture, and its people are more important than his/her liberal ideas. That's just my humble opinion. And yeah, he's kind of accused of killing his own wife. About his past, well I don't wanna point anything out but over the years I have observed a lot of his speeches and tweets with regards to the situations in our country, etc., and ...... Until now they had their social system hidden. But with their blunder of releasing another disease, they were put under the lens.

It is a great crime for congress people to talk even on poverty as the country had given them power for almost 70 years.a word "poverty" from these Congressi men is like a sin to talk as the country wonders how come they even after 7 decades in power are talking about eradicating poverty till date.the new generation just hates them ranting every now and then regarding poverty and they should understand that it was because of this the country has side lined them from power and I am sure they will be not in power for ever as this party will break and perish the more time they will remain out of power. also they have hitting stone on their foot by being communal by doing appeasement of a particular religion.they have failed badly on economical and social front and mind you they are dead for ever.mark my word you will not hear Congress by 2030 even in states and all small parties coming together with common agenda in power is bleak proposition there by giving party like bjp to rule for a long time and even more so with leader like modi

The US has the world biggest Gold reserve locked in Fort Knox 900 metric tons. And Gold is still found all over America. How many oil, gas fields, Gold mines do China has? The brutality that mughals and British did in India cannot be described here in a single comment..rather i suggest you to go and read some decent history books so you'll get some idea about it.
I am not saying that India's economy would've been 32% now if they didn't rule but im saying that we would've been in a far more better position compared to now.
The earth is 4.5 billion years old and in that according to Gregorian calendar we are in 2020 so considering this 2k years there have been many rulers throughout the world who have dominated the others by power or economically as well. There have been many European rulers like Julius Caesar or Alexander, or in Asia like Genghis khan or Akbar or The Mauryan empire which ruled whole India during its peak golden age and made India the most richest and prosperous nation in the world(when America was not even a word). But none of the empires stayed. In just 2k years many empires thought to be everlasting saw their fall. Not one empire continued to dominate forever. Those people living at that time also thought like you...that they cant be defeated.. but nothing is constant. People die and born again...sameway nations die and are reborn..the only thing constant is change.. Everything happens for a reason...we cannot change it...but we can learn from it..

Dr. Tharoor, I have listened to your China assessment in 2020 and 2021, and for some reason you have taken a more hawkish stand. Aside from your anger over the border dispute, I have just some comments about your "democratic pressure cooker has a safety valve" and "as long as the Indian people are fed and sheltered and happy." in this video.
    1. Haiti is the oldest democracy in western hemisphere. Not only was her president assassinated last year, her 2020 GDP per Cap PPP was $3,094, ranked 171 of 198 regions.
    2. Kazakhstan is a democracy. The people has just violently forced the entire government to be fired.
    3. U.S.' capital hill, their legislation building, got raided by mobs, and a threat of civil war talk has ensued until this day.
    4. Civil unrest rose globally by 10%, with Belarus recording the largest deterioration. There were 14,871 violent demonstrations, protests and riots recorded globally in 2020.
    5. India's farmer protest lasted over a year.
    6. India's 2020 GDP per Cap PPP was $6,501, ranked 136/198, lower than Sri Lanka, Iraq, Vietnam and Indonesia. By your argument that as long as the Indian public in general are fed and sheltered, they should feel very good about the way they are governed. And the soft power of Yoga and Bollywood would give Indians a high self-esteem in front of other countries. I guess same can be said about the Iraqis or the Sri Lankans.
    7. China's 2020 GDP per Cap PPP was $17,204, ranked 82/198, with more population than India but almost 3X the avg income, and you are telling us that as long as Indian people are fed and sheltered they should be happy? Are you cutting the Indian democracy too much slack?
    8. China still has a major corruption issue. That will be her downfall. In 2021, more than 7900 officials found guilty of corruption, with 16B USD involved, so I am not just singing the Chinese praises. But when we look into the same category for India, she ranked 86/180 countries in Transparency International's CPI 2020 report. Democracy didn't prevail there either.
    9. You touched on the Xinjiang Uyghur issue, let's review it from a financial perspective. Xinjiang's GDP per Cap PPP in 2020 was $8,236. Uyghur people also reside in the neighbouring countries of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. In 2020, Uzbekistan's GDP per Cap PPP was $7,731, Kazakhstan $26,744, and Kyrgyzstan $4,962. Aside from the mineral rich Kazakhstan, Xinjiang residents on average are better off than their neighbours in similar geography, and better off than the Indians. By your logic, if the Indians are happy with what they have from the government, the Uyghurs should be happier.

@@eugeneb2914 This is a collective reply to all those people who make such a big deal out of foreign accents...(including Indians). Homo sapiens already have a mountain of problems to deal with. As if it was not enough, all we are doing is adding more to the bucket..Accent is nothing to be ashamed of... It is something that was gifted to us by our respective mother tongues.. I believe it is okay to find other accents funny and weird, but using it as a tool to humiliate and ridicule others is somewhat immature.. I think that even the comment abt chinese accent is equally wrong and Indians would have reacted even more strongly to the comment if it had been addressed to them.
But people need to be sensible. The comment section would be less toxic that way...
And as a reply to the STRONGER part of ur comment, well we all love our motherland. True sense of patriotism lies in feeling proud to be a part of your nation and voicing out your concerns when no other will dare to. People in my family range from the palest White (very common) with green eyes and brown hair (blonde hair at birth) and beautiful Caucasian bone structure to a beautiful dark olive skin color with almond eyes and black hair. But brown is nowhere to be found. You do realize that not all Indians are brown, right? The Upper Caste NW Indians are more commonly White or light olive skinned and are Caucasian Indo Aryans. Look up Pria Kataria Puri or Rohit Bal or Neil Nitin Mukesh (all individual people) on TH-cam for examples of what I'm talking about. The two speakers do not know about China at all. If people at their status, with their titles and honorous labels have no idea about China, did not realize they themselve have no idea about China but strangely jumped on the stage to "empower" people about China, that explains so many surprises in later years.

If Shashi takes Yoga and Bollywood as soft power, then Bruce Lee would have been China's soft power. The brash behaviour of Chinese tourist in other countries should change. Be mindful that there are also some mindless western tourist who do not respect the cultural nuance of the countries they visited. Shashi has not mentioned that Japan and USSR failed to achieved what they ought because of the unilateral pressure by the US. Can the same US containment be applied to China? Will it work? Will China succumb to the US malicious containment? I would prefer in the short term to have authoritarian in order for the society to progress instead of the perpetual repression conduct by the US against weaker nations. Shashi's view of China on technology about 5 years ago was no so correct... China nowadays are quite advance in the technological development. It will continue if not for the US sabotages. Regarding cooperation between China and India, it is India which does not wish to cooperate.
