Is the AEROS Loop Studio strong enough to pull me away from my DAW? | Secret Weapons Demo & Review

  • I have a long and somehow complicated relationship with looper pedals. To me, it feels like I have long since "graduated" from loopers to my DAW almost entirely. This is, Im sure, because I spend most of the time with a guitar in my hands in my studio. But I also appreciate amount of flexibility and post production offered to me by my DAW; things often restricted by modern loopers. Aeros, however, seems to be a different beast entirely so let's see if it's strong enough to pull me back into a looper workflow.

    I just recently picked up an Aeros after using boss RC units exclusively for over a decade. I’m totally blown away at the efficiency and options available, via routing. I’m sad that I bought the RC500 boss looper first as an “upgrade” to my RC30 when I should have just spent the extra coin on the Aeros. Get one and you’ll be blown away. Also the compatibility with the Beat Buddy via midi makes this a premium songwriting / jam tool. Great vid!

      David I love my aeros but its been rendered inoperable by a small bump on the screen (not cracked or anything, but now all blue). tried reaching support about buying a replacement screen but didnt even get a reply. Can you please help!!!

    I’m really enjoying this, Mark🙌🙌🙌. I’m getting used to the Rc600, & one of the first things I did was to map each loop channel to Exp volume, switched through Morningstar mc8. I’m interested in applying some of your flexibility tricks to the Rc600. One unrelated question: I’ve been told that Clock timing can be an issue between loopers and DAW’s, and that a dedicated Clock manager may be necessary. Clearly the Aeros is doing a good job managing midi synchronization with your DAW, or you would have said something. Do you have any comments on this?

    7:30 One of the biggest differences is that a looper/pedalboard setup has a much more aesthetically pleasing vibe for viewers than working in a DAW. Both live and for video.

    • @markjohnstonofficial

      I definitely dont agree with this as a broad statement. I know some people like to watch that live looping performance thing but it wears thin on me quickly. It’s a fun thing to watch the first time but for an entire performance I would much rather hear someone perform with a band / with a produced track than have to piece together every single song like legos. And I would hold to that preference for both live and on video.

      I’d still flip those personally. Live band > performance with backing tracks > live looping. Especially if it’s more than one song and if it’s more than single instrumentation.

      @@Domn879the only two people that do loop performances that I would actually pay to see live is Reggie Watts and Mark rebillet. Aside from that I find live looping for an entire set pretty grating

    Killer demo! Just curious if you’re leaning towards the UA Dream 65 over the Ruby now? I can’t afford both at the moment, and was leaning towards the Ruby.

      It's a day by day thing. The vibes between a fender style and Vox style circuit are so different that it kind of comes down to the genre / vibe I am chasing that day.

    This is pretty wild. I've always been someone who prefers to have everything at my hands and feet so this is really cool, might have to get one. I saw Aeros also makes a drum pedal called the BeatBuddy 2 mini. Have you tried it? if so would you recommend it?

    • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven’t tried it but honestly I don’t know that I would ever use it. I’m not saying it’s not something with a ton of value for someone, but as someone with REALLY specific genre preferences when it comes to drums and as someone who writes all their own drum parts.. a stock sounds drum loop library doesn’t hold a lot of appeal to me.

    • @DavidPackouz
      @DavidPackouz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      If you want to use the BeatBuddy with the Aeros or other looper get the standard BeatBuddy, not the mini, because you'll need MIDI sync

  • @arnaudstegle5034

    Can't get why none of the big pedal brands producing ambient tools hasn't made a modern panning pedal yet.

    • @leftovernoise
      @leftovernoise 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Likely because the vast majority of guitarists don't run stereo rigs. Panning during a live show would be of limited use in most applications. Bass players certainly wouldn't make use of it. And synth players and also people in a studio environment already have many ways to play with panning while recording. So that means the market for a pedal that mainly does panning stuff would be extremely limited.
      I'm not saying it wouldn't be cool. It's just a lot of effort that would need to be put in to produce a very niche product that probably wouldn't sell well.

  • @wheresallthezombies
    @wheresallthezombies 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I’m trying to decide between this and the boomerang. They both seem solid but everyone suggests the Aeros over the boomerang. The price difference is a huge factor though.

    • @schmidinho
      @schmidinho 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have both. They are both amazing. It depends what you want them for. I would recommend Boomerang for quick, simple looping - more of a live performance looper as nothing can be saved and the buttons are the easiest buttons on any pedal I've ever used. I don't know why more pedals don't use the same button style as the Boomerang. The aeros is much deeper and the visual aspect is huge. I currently use the Aeros for my live performance but don't want to get rid of the Boomerang because it's such a great looper.

    • @wheresallthezombies
      @wheresallthezombies 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@schmidinho the idea is to start looping live. I have a whole live show in mind. With visuals and what not. I do like the visual aspect of the Aeros but not sure how much I need that.

      The Aeros becomes amazing when you hook up a midi controller to it. I use the morningstar mc6 and programmed it very similar to the midi mastro. Much easier to manage full songs and switching between sections. BUt, you can also do 3-4 song parts on the Boomerang too.@@wheresallthezombies

    Man, this thing sure seem amazing and it opens up the possibility for a god damn perfect rig for writing.
    I'm looking at this in conjunction with the Midi maestro and the elektron octatrack. Then running some kind of guitar modeller into it. I will probably go for the Model FET into the UA ox stomp. (would be killer if you could demo them together since you have em both 😅)
