Loved this. I'd like to know more about amp settings and why. What are some of budget amps that could be used to obtain useable or somewhat great tones? What would be some good settings for treble , mids, bass, reverb, gain etc.. Also information on something more affordable for guitarist who are starting to purchase effects. Also explain settings on effects and how and why they work and blend with over all playing or use. What would be a few great settings or use of a Line 6 Pod or amp?

i have had an EVH Musicman since 1996 & use it on every gig I play. I can vouch for it always staying in tune. I have on more than 1 occasion pulled it out of the case & started straight into a gig without checking the tuning & it has been spot on. Best guitar I have ever owned-and very versatile. Great video guys.

Love Tim Pierce!!! Great episode and great discussion about gear. Visually (looking at his studio) he has everything, but all that is needed because of his job, but nice that he demonstrated "his" primary core sounds. For me, just reinforces (because I am guilty of buying in to the hype), to stop chasing all these tones and just work on playing and that you don't need all these fancy, latest, greatest gear.
I am so lucky to say that at 13, Rick Springfield was my very first concert during the 1983 Living in Oz tour. I can remember Rick coming down this huge flight of stairs to open with Affair of the heart. Watching the affair of the heart video with Rick playing the brown sunburst fender is what actually got me started playing at a young age. But going back to my first concert experience, I am glad I got to see tim pierce on guitar and Jack white on drums who I think is a very under rated drummer. Besides the great set list they played that night what 13 year old wouldn’t want to see a ton of chicks dancing to Jessie’s girl? 😂 😂😂😂😂
Tim is one of best, his technique and knowledge of music and studio applications and his amazing playing to me just makes everyone play better he is like the Studio Godfather to us all, such an inspiration. so thanks Robert for featuring one of my hero's!
Tim should be a literal guitar hero. Just his depth of tonal knowledge and experience is something you just can't buy. We watch him make shit up on the fly, and he's always on time, never failing. I'm sure he does as we all do, but man, nothing beats experience and talent.......and that grin when he nails it!
They are quite the revelation. I've been using one since the early 80's. When I played a Tele like many I got the quick draw and use the volume. Then I got hooked on Bill Kirchen and his reversed control plate, now that's a real eyeopener.
@@josearjona3728 that's what I'm using. The volume nob. But didn't think to plug the volume pedal with all the gain pedals in front of it. Then the effect pedals after. So that's what's that is for.
I have noticed over the years that if you get a pedal from a manufacturer and really love it you will normally like their designs. It makes sense. Maybe because they hear things similar to you. Boss tends to work for most. Keeley has always worked good for myself as well as Xotic effects. I never liked the JHS and Wampler stuff much, but then there are a few I do like that they make. However, there are a few brands that release a pedal, and I am pretty confident I am going to love it. Strymon is like this for me, but I remember purchasing the DIG delay just because, and that is the only Strymon I just could not like. Sometimes I think I need to revisit that pedal based on how much I like there other offerings. Thanks for the video Robert and Tim. 😀
This is me with EQD. I got into them for the weird stuff but ended up really vibing with their gain pedals. Now I sort of collect them. My justification is that they are great in the studio 😂
I picked up a used Fender FM100 Twin Reverb when I became the leader of a rock band I had started as a side-player with, and I regularly stop and enjoy how good and professional it sounds. I have a dozen different electric guitars and another dozen acoustics and acoustic-electrics that I gig with, and I have to make some EQ adjustments per each guitar, but I always love the sound. For effects I used a LINE6-PodXT-LIVE board until the main volume pot started crackling-up, now I have a more standard pedalboard (and a new-used PodXT-LIVE for my studio), but although I have a few other amps, none tickle my ear like my MR100 Twin. I've always wanted a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 Twin, but I haven't wanted it that $$$badly yet.
Let me just say that the tones Tim gets out of a humbucker is just amazing to me. I have never been able to get that absolute perfect mix of grit and clean almost single coil like sound. His years of knowledge and experience are priceless.
8:04 a perfect example of this is EC. He plays his signature Stratocasters into a wah then into a Dumble modded Bandmaster. He has a Leslie button switch that activates his real Leslie next to the Dumble. That’s it! The proof is in the pudding, he still sells out arenas and plays the hits!!!!!
Clapton also never got crazy into effects. He also always had bands that were talented enough to update the arrangements of his catalogue so he could shine. People like David Gilmour or Steve Howe used effects as arrangement tools. I use them as examples because most guitarists would argue neither used strange sounds as a crutch.
Awww that was so driving me nuts!! When Tim says here's my sound and pulled a few notes from a D chord and it sounded EXACTLY like the opening to REBEL REBEL by David Bowie!! Took me over 30 mins searching TH-cam WHERE have I heard that !!! lol

Saw Lukas when I was at DelFest a few weeks ago. His set was awesome, he brought out Sierra Ferrell to do a few song with him, they had great chemistry. Lukas is the whole deal. He’s a great player, singer and song writer and seems like a really nice guy. He was hanging around on the stage wings listening to the other players all day on Friday, it was great to see him!
One of my favorite guitar players is Guthrie Trapp, and he said to get one good guitar you can bond with, not a bunch of gear you don't use. I'm getting rid of all my gear, keeping one or two that I like best. It IS a sickness!
Sorry, I like the differences between a Jaguar and a Strat, a Tele and Les Paul, a Gretsch and Duo-Sonic, a Cyclone and an ES-339, a Squier VI and a Danelectro convertible … I have decent, inexpensive versions of each and love enjoying the differences. To each, his own!
@@jamesmcghee3440 While it's great to have the variety at your fingertips, and backups for when something breaks, you need a lot of space to store dozens of guitars, and string changes and cleaning gets to be a hassle.
@@JohnShalamskas and then you realize that you’ve gone *years* without picking up and playing some of these guitars you don’t think you can live without. I used to be guilty of that, but finally accepted that owning a dozen guitars while only using 3-4 of them 95%+ of the time was just wasting space. And no, I didn’t need to hang on to that 12 string for the once a decade I got in the mood to do something with it :)
Amp Switchers: I have a KHE (maybe Robert recommended it a few years ago?) amp/cab switcher with an EFX loop, and love it. Works and sounds great. They are a Swiss company. Always fun to listen to Tim, both playing and demoing/talking about gear! Good video Robert!
Great info and examples of pedal types - really helps me understand how to use them. And because I have Zoom multi effect pedals, I have all these digital pedal types built-in.
I have 2 volume pedals in my rig. One at the start that I use like the volume control of my guitar so I can get varying levels of clean to dirty. The other at the end that I use as a master volume. I never thought about the master volume pedal as a noise gate. I use it most for volume swells and in spots where I stop playing for more than a few seconds, so maybe I did that without even realizing.
Because i have a Blackstar ID Coe stereo 40 with it's built in effects I'm not sure that I even need any guitar pedals to get good tones with my highly modified Strat with it's 3 quad rail/coil humbuckers and wired like a 50's Les Paul with coil splitting adding a P/P pot on the bridge tine to activate the bridge and neck humms together regardless of any of the other controls, the4 3 P/P volume and the 3 tone pots and I retained the 5-way blade style selector switch. there are so many tones available that I didn't bother to count them all. Add to that all I can get from the ID Core stereo 40 and there are just to many to count anyway. but then you will just find a combo or a few that you like and ignore the rest but for when you want to experiment. if I want even more volume and/or deeper bass tones in the mix I can hook into my surround sound receiver for all It offers with the subwoofer and the sorround speakers as well. I like it loud and proud. I am a child of the 60's and 70's. after all they call us Gen-X and we rule as far as I'm concerned.
I us3 my octave pedal before my volume pedal, because to me it sounds like it tracks better, but now I’m going to experiment again with the volume pedal placement
To Tim's point, I love your playing as well. Is there somewhere we can go to hear a collection of your original music? Also, are you playing sessions now that you're in Nashville?

Well, you already have a volume knob on your guitar. Zero volume, zero noise

I’m a metalhead. I use noise gates. I’m dead silent between notes. Cause theres alot of hiss going on behind it

My Boss GE7 has been a lifetime pedal for me. I've used it to give a mid boost to solos since the early 90's.

The bridge of the Starship Pierce is always killer

The MXR Micro Amp has been a lifetime pedal for me for about 10 years now. It's always on and pushes my Bassman beautifully.
