What do you think of the ARRMA Typhon GROM? Would you buy this or the amazing MJX Hyper go for the same money? I think ARRMA need to look at their pricing and remember that people will want to get the best for their money. it that the current GROM range? I'm not sure it is.

By the time you buy this and upgrade it you just bought a 3s Typhon. I almost got one of these yesterday and then I realized that I upgrade everything and realized having a bunch money in that little car is insane. To me those Grom cars are perfect for a kids first RC and nothing more.

I got this for my 6y old girl as a 1st rc-car.. it got plenty of speed for her and the thing is.. I dont want to buy 1/10 scale truck which she can bash into neighbours car. This little thing just slides under. Its not ment for rough terrains but can handle itself in grass and concrete nicely. Also in small tracks inside its a beast and can handle jumps aswell. For 160€ it got decent parts and ez enough to take apart so my 6y old can do it.

@beyondRC lol. Not sure. Just watched a video about they use it in filming scale boats in wave tanks to simulate realism.
Basically take the square root of the scale and that's the reduction in filming speed as I understand it. Example 1/10th scale... square root of 10 being 3.162 so reduce the speed of filming by that number I guess.
      Yeah... you're right. That's friggin' complicated 😝👎

I have both MJX and Typhon Grom. MJX is super fast and comes with lots of extras. But I personally prefer cars that can handle. Like the Grom a little more because of that. I understand some people like to run cars back and forth, thats cool. I get bored with that style of driving. I like something that will handle on a track.

When it comes to price, I feel that anyone that's into RC or getting into RC are probably not poor. I'm not rich not even close. But I just buy what I like. I'm never gonna buy something just because it's cheaper than what I really want. I save money and wait, sometimes a year or two. Didn't get my Promoto until the hype died and I had the money. Now no You Tubers are talking about it. But I got what I wanted, regardless of the expensive price.

And despite arrma fanboys always say traxxas jsut wants your money where i live the traxxas rustler way about 50+ dollar cheaper than the same type of car (arrma vorteks) but i thought why should i buy the base rustler so i went for the 4x4 vxl version. In total it was the same price as the arrma vorteks 3s and i got the traxxas with battery and charger pack.

Love the Groms! Quality and engineering always costs a little more. We have been racing the little typhons on an indoor track built for 1:12th scale cars and these are just perfect for that. Throttle set at 75%, completely stock and after a little practice can keep up with the current racers. Tried racing my MJX around the track and completely useless, way to twitchy, doesn’t accelerate in a straight line, way too fast. Love the MJX at the skatepark or dirt track where more control and precision is not required.

    • @beyondRC
      @beyondRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The MJX is easily one of the best beginner bashers out there. Yes the typhon/granite grom do steer better but lack the performance in my opinion. Really depends on what people are looking to do. MJX will be the way to go if its just a small basher they are looking for but its not perfect. For the money i think its no 1. Just my opinion :)

    • @Boogie_the_cat
      @Boogie_the_cat 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, returned my MJX for a Granite. Paid a lot more for it obviously, but I took it out for 6-12 battery packs a week and only broke:
1 RPM arm, hitting a stop sign metal pole
1 motor mount, hitting concrete at 40mph head on
1 spur when my motor mount bent in the above crash and messed up my mesh
1 servo, replaced with a $12 Amazon special
      2 diff input gears
Arrma also is GREAT with warranty service. They want one email and picture and then they ship 2 day airmail.
MJX pretended to ship me the screws that fell out of the chassis and steering arm \ bellcrank, but 2 months later, still no screws in the mail.
I'm happy paying more for precision manufacturing \ engineering and an actual 2 year warranty that WORKS.
MJX didn't handle well either. Way too squirrelly and the steering never would center. Constantly adjusting the trim this way then that way. Rolled over way too much. Soft hex screws stripped out... Not a durable basher in my experience.

I always appreciate your honest reviews, but in this case I think I need to let you know I disagree with you. I have one and I think it's great!
I think to be clear, it's definitely bigger than 18th scale, I would claim it's 14th scale, even. I got buggies from WL, Eachine, HBX, LC Racing and a few others, and I think this from Arrma is designed way better, and that's what I feel I pay extra for. The correctly proportioned wheelbase, ride height and tread makes it really nice to drive. And the power is okay for me. If I want to go crazy I grab an 8th scale buggy and go somewhere with a lot of space.
I just felt I needed to argue, I do believe this is a good option. If I were to rant about anything, then it would be their use of proprietary charger system, I cut the plugs off mine right away and put good old Deans, ha ha!

    • @beyondRC

Thank you for this. I enjoy when people give me their opinions :) Of course I dont expect people to agree with me all of the time. The biggest issue for me is the price. It costs almost the same as the Gorgon which is 1/10, larger and without a doubt way more capable in terms of performance, fun factor and off road ability. I simply do not think it should be the price it is. If it was priced lower then without a doubt it would be a great option for some backyard/track or even mild bashing for beginners but I could simply not justify it when there are so many more options out there like the hyper go and as others have mentioned does have some steering geometry issues but excels in every other way and is praised by every RC reviewer out there. ARRMA missed an opportunity with these GROM cars they should have made them an extremely affordable way for beginners to get into the hobby which would have led to brand loyalty by said beginners liking the quality and feel for arrma cars and in time would have ended up buying their higher end cars meaning even more money for them. Overpricing the cars themselves and the spares/upgrades is not the best way to go about it. I am a massive Arrma fan boy I have owned almost all of their cars but even i have to admit this is not worth the money at all as much as I love the company. Shame

The 1/18th boom came about years ago and they were also raced but companies eventually realised they were just too small and fiddly and generally a bit twitchy to drive so companies started to make 1/16th, 1/14th and more recently some 1/12th models. They have also just done an update to the Groms with V2 diffs with metal internals instead of plastic on the V1, no idea when the UK will get those though 🤷. From what I have seen there is a ton of slop in the suspension and steering in those cheaper brands which has steered me away from getting one. A totally insulting cash grab by Arrma.!!
Arrma made their name by offering more than their competitors for less money.!!
These things are way overpriced, don't perform, aren't durable & you've got to spend the same again to upgrade it to even get near the cheaper competition.!
Arrma are obviously learning from Traxxas.!!!!
Arrma are already revising the diffs (not enough, what about the rest of its faults?)... Call me unreasonable, but I kind of expect an RC (especially from a "premium" brand) to be designed to be as good as it can be on launch.!!
This one's for the Arrma fan bois only.!
Cheers Ricky.. Brutally honest as always.!! 👍 👍 👍
I totally agree, I'd spend my money on an MJX, Rlaarlo or even a Wltoys & have money left over for a few lipos.!!
    Stay safe out there mate & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️ 👍 👍 👍

Reflex 14 is a better deal

I bought one because as much as I love my redcat volcano 16, I HATE body clips with a passion, and the volcano kept losing them. Less than 3 months in and the rear diff is gone and the body mount broke. Worst value RC by far. Cheap Amazon brushless RCs are better.

I'm an Arrma fan, but I won't be buying this junk.

If I knew then what I know now about how scale affects performance.. I would have just saved up for a 1/10 scale. 1/12 is close enough for a new hobbyist as they usually take 1/10 scale parts, which opens up a plethora of options. Yeah you can put 12mm hexes on it(1/18), but it's not worth the hassle. Been there done that with the Losi Mini T ✌️🫡

100% i think 1/10 is the best way to go for a new hobbyist if they are looking to run on a variety of surfaces without worrying. Smaller stuff like 1/12 and 1/14 is still doable but it starts to restrict where they can be run. Working on smaller cars is also more difficult. To upgrade a GROM just doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment and i would advise people to look at something like a second hand typhon 3s blx, quantum 2 flux or even a gorgon (although they are using the same marketing tactics with spares/parts) the gorgon will be so much more fun compared to this tiny 1/18.
