Prince's European fans were the most dedicated, especially the ones from Belgium and Holland. He toured there almost every year in the 80's and 90's. I got hooked on him after seeing his 1986 Parade concert. It blew my mind. I saw him perform live 57 times, some of which very rare and memorable aftershows. Because he often treated his fans to impromptu intimate live jams in small clubs. I remember one in Brussels where I was so close my nose almost touched his knee !
He was by far the most talented live performer ever, and his fans adored the ground he walked on. I still miss him every day 😢
But it's nice seeing people discover his work and appreciate his enormous talent.

Bonnie Boyer, rest her soul, was right in the pocket of gospel rooted singers Prince loved. I was lucky enough to see her with him on the Lovesexy tour which was to put it lightly the most unforgettable concert experience of my life. He lost a lot of money due to the stage set up but it was phenomenal and did what it set out to do - make us remember it forever.

I was lucky enough to see him live over 20 times:) That includes being invited to several after-shows and after parties where he also performed. After his concerts he would frequently have an after-show or an after party. He usually started playing at 1 or 2am and played until dawn. It was epic 😎 He also pulled me onstage to dance once 🎉

Definitely a drum loop. Sheila E., one of the back up singers was the drummer. And I remember Bobby Z. (drummer from the Revolution) saying that during Purple Rain tour he had to use a drum sequencer on When Doves Cry (I think) track because Prince was really the only one who could sustain the complex rhythm playing live.

You got to this one quicker than I thought you would. Thanks so much!!! I love that you pointed out his vocals. You’re right, they are often overlooked. My theory is that he was so good at so many things that it caused people to miss the greatness of each part. I mean, Rolling Stone initially left him off their greatest guitarists list, he’s not in the Song Writers HOF, etc. One of my favorite things about this song is that the backing vocals actually come before his lead vocals. When the SOTT album came out, I would play this song over and over and sing the different parts each time. That’s the great Boni Boyer on vocals there. I believe the drums were a loop for this song. Sheila E., Prince’s drummer on this tour was singing backup (she was the one who started laughing) on this song. Sheila is an amazing percussionist and drummer. I’ll have to request something with her for you to check her out. Really enjoyed your insight on this one and am looking forward to the next 💜💜💜

What you're witnessing is Prince's informal introduction of his new backing band, The New Power Generation (NPG). Prior to this, the Revolution was his backing band. Gone are Lisa and Wendy Melvoin, who had provided vocals, guitar, and keyboards in the Revolution with Bonnie Boyer (vocals/ keyboards), Sheila E. (drummer/ vocals) and Cat Glover (dancer/ bkg vocals). Prince, too, was a drummer and a master of drum programming, so what we're hearing on this track is his programmed drum track. "Forever in My Life" was near the end of the night's performance so his minimalist approach to this song was to bring down the heavy production of the night's set and take it to church! I was fortunate to see Prince live on 4 different tours and he always brought something new to each time he took the stage. Check out from SOTT film "(It's Gonna Be) A Beautiful Night". You'll get to see Prince and Sheila E switch out drumming duties. Sheila E takes the mic for a mid song rap and Prince takes over the drums! "Housequake" is another fun song from the SOTT album/ movie.

U REALLY won't appreciate this performance until or unless u hear the recorded version from,"Sign of the Times" album..Then u will love this version even more.
Live performances by Prince always had 1 motto with them as once told by Jimmy Jam during a tv interview back in the day when he says that The Time were rehearsing for the tour with Prince and they were playing the song as it was recorded and he stopped them mid-song and told them,STOP! U HAVE TO DO BETTER THAN THE RECORD! And they changed the groove right there..Also he said it was not out of the norm for Prince to take your instrument and show u how he wanted songs to be played, like Jimmy Jam and his bass..He also said that it was honor and respect to have someone to do that and they could play your instrument even better than you can lol...

The man with the stethoscope is Dr. Fink. The rest of the Revolution had been let go by this time. This is a transitory Prince band between The Revolution and the New Power Generation which would start to coalesce as they discovered who was going to be staying. The saxophonist is also the same as before: Eric Leeds. Later on, by about the time of Batman, he was using Candy Dulfer on sax, but not yet. This album dropped in '87 and is one of his most loved, but genre-wise, it was a bit all over the place. It was the first OFFICIAL Prince album to have so many songs that it took 2 compact discs to put it on. This timeframe was about when the CD was still new, but most people were still buying cassette-tapes so of course, you know they had the cassettes and the vinyl records too, which would have also been more than one of. Dr. Fink was with Prince the longest of anyone other than I think Kirk Johnson, who was a background dancer and bodyguard/confidante of Prince, though some blame him for Prince's death, not directly, but indirectly.

Interestingly I was wondering if you were gonna pick up on the drum performance technique. You have a keen sense of detail. So the slim chick in the middle with the tight dress and the big hair who was laughing at his adlibs is legendary drummer and vocalist Sheila E. who was Prince’s protégés and drummer during this period. What they did for this particular song in the show was program one consistent beat into a drum machine using real drums so Sheila wouldn’t be stuck behind a set of drums just so he could have a moment when all his band members were on the main stage with him for this one. The rest of the show, the drumming is live.
