    Hi guys! My name is Sensei Jason Leung, I am a 4th Dan in Shotokan Karate. In today's video we are learning Kata Heian Shodan, which is often taught as the first or second karate form in Shotokan Karate.
    The kata is very similar to Taikyoku Shodan, but there are a few new moves and different karate stances. Instead of punches (oi zuki) down the middle, we do "Age-Uke" or rising block. Also at the end of kata Heian Shodan we do "Shuto-Uke" which is Knife hand block. And these last four moves are performed in "Kokutsu-Dachi" or Back Stance.
    Please study carefully and pay close attention :)
    Good luck my friends :)
    OSS,
    Jason

    I studied Karate 50 years ago in London under Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. I but did not continue after three years as I moved away from the area. I am now 78 years and have started to practice Kata again at home as a keep fit exercise, I have found you're website very helpful in refreshing my memory, some movements are now different to how I remember, but 95% the same. Thank You. I also I want to say I think your form is remarkable .

      Around the year 2002 I was studying with a Sensei. "Sensei John". I think his last name was Carpenter as I had to tell people he wasn't the director. He claimed to be 9th Dan and studied under Kanazawa. He was in his late 60s at the time. We lived in a rural area and I was one of five students and practiced in a converted Garage Dojo or the yard on good days. Now I am 60.

    We were taught to take half step back and pull the hand at the same time, then with a large circular movement do the hammer punch but WITH a step forward at the same time (from that half step stance back to full step) to make much more power to the hammer punch when the energy of your whole body is moving towards the target.

    My teacher gets us to do the hammer fist differently. His way involves pulling the leg back then thrusting forward again with the strike, while maintaining the same stance height. I actually like this approach because it makes the kata more consistent, rather than having this one move where you suddenly stand up. With the 3 quarter left turn, he told me to shift my weight slightly towards the exit direction. The inertia from that shift helps to guide me where I need to go, helping with precision and balance.

    • @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL
      @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say respect the way of your school and sensei, but do not limit the scope of movement. Try out both! :))

    • @josephcoon4835
      @josephcoon4835 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Imagining the situation, I see two possibilities:
      1. The opponent has a loose grip, so when you pull away, they are at range. This would require a step forward to land the hammer fist.
      2. The opponent has a tight grip, so you pull them toward you when you step back. This would not require a step forward to land the hammer fist.
      In conclusion, practicing both styles would be beneficial to cover both scenarios. However, since this is the first kata, following the ways of your particular dojo would be the most respectful and simple. I would think that any sensei would help with refining the actual application outside of the basic kata after the basic kata has been mastered. Like many disciplines, including math, there will be slight variances to address the variability of real world applications. Therefore discussion is always good once the basic principles have been mastered.

    When I did this kata many years ago ( in the 70s ) on the last 3 punch move, we had to do the 1 st punch ( pause ) and 2 and 3rd punch fast and then kiaeee.
    I took grading doing that under sensei Enoeda.
    Maybe over the years it has changed.

    • @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL
      @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A punch is a punch, regardless of what variation you may have learned.
      The only thing you mention that is different is the Rhythm of the kata.
      Timing and rhythm can easily be altered.
      The underlying principles of the technique cannot.

The videographer also does a superb job in capturing the moves from various angles. For those who maybe interested, keep in mind that Funikoshi, when creating the Shotokan Heian kata from the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Pinan kata, he flipped Pinan Shodan with Pinan Nidan. He thought it made it easier for students to learn. So, Heian Shodan is Pinan Nidan. Heian Nidan is Pinan Shodan. In this video she is doing Pyung Ahn Cho-Dan, which is Heian Shodan/Pinan Nidan. So this would be the second kata in Shorin Ryu but the first kata in Shotokan...
