I forgot to mention. In 1973, I went to Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. Since a few other guys and I arrived a week early, they put us to work cleaning out some old, unused for many years, barracks and some kind of storage room, about 24' x 16', in which we found box upon box of ""MRE"". I'd say there were 12 MRe's to each box. To the best of my recollection, they were at least 20+ yrs. old, so from 1952??... The Sgt. told us to take what we want and trash the rest. I had many of the jelly bars that you showed here, although they seemed brighter in color,.and they tasted similar to the ""Chuckles" jelly candy that used to be popular. Also had hundreds of packs of cigarettes that came 6 or 8 to a pack. I literally had over 100 packs, which I sold during the 1 week "bivouac" training. Guys were willing to pay a premium, as during the bivouac , we had no commissary access. Just a memory that came back after watching the first of your MRE videos...first for me, that is. Your videos are fantastic...thank you!!
Great story bro! Bet you were pretty badass back in the day (well all the dudes from back then coulda kicked the crap out of the pussies of today lol)!
Steve, your smoke sessions with the fine, aged tobacco are the greatest. It's like a Fireside Chat of your own or something, a little interlude. Keep the great videos coming, brother. Thanks for what you do!
I don't know how I stumbled across your channel, but I have a crap load of MREs, so I've been very intrigued with your videos. I've eaten some fairly old stock, but nothing like you have consumed! When I was a kid, my grandmother told me a story about her grandfather who fought during the Civil War for the South. He told her that his unit ran out of food and would go into smoke houses on abandoned farms, dig up the dirt floor and boil the soil, which was coated in fat and drippings from the smoked meats. They would then skim off the fat as their meal.
They would literally scoop the fat soaked dirt off of the floor of the smoke houses, and boil it. This was verbal history shared with me by my grandmother. I wrote all of this stuff down to pass on to my son etc. Love what you're doing brother. Fun stuff and I dig on how you respect and preserve this history. Much respect!
Steve's video's are like a sweet lullaby to me. I love to study all wars and anything relating to war. I guess I am a different girl in that way. WWII and the Civil War are my favorite modern day wars to research. Watching Steve smoke a war era cigarette is so soothing to me. I always want to continue learning and these vids are a great way to do so. Good on ya Steve!
I was in the Army in 1959 -66. The C-rats we got in '59-61 were dated 1938. We got a full 20 cig pack, and the Lucky Strikes had the green logo which was before the red. The canned chicken was horrible but the Pork & beans were OK. The hard tack couldn't be softened in hot coffee, so putting jam on one was out of the question. The beef stew was pretty good. No utensils, you used yours from your mess kit.
Man, i have got to say, i was expecting the comment sections on your videos to be insane but instead they are full of amazing comments, information, people discussing things civilly, and enjoying what you do and share with us. I live in a high stress situation at the moment due to declining health, and your videos are an amazing stress reliever for me. Thanks man, for all the knowledge and vicarious adventuring, and thanks to all the commenters for being ace folks.
There is something oddly calming and intriguing about your videos. Probably the passion, the curiosity and the enjoyment you get from opening everything. They really are one of the best time capsules in the world. Love the ones of you trying out the aged smokes. You instantly get that nicotine calm look and being a smoker and watching others enjoy a good cig always makes ya want one lol love the vids.
Ender Skies I think at this point he's built up a super tolerance for bacteria, he could probably shoot E.coli into his veins and it wouldn't do anything
Yeah my faves are the ones he smokes in for some reason. Probably cuz tobacco has been so thoroughly vilified these days that it's almost taboo to watch a dude smoke a cig on TH-cam.
These are so interesting! I love how you show everything in good close-up so we can really inspect the items too, and you lay everything out nicely so we can keep looking at everything as you go along. Also, a huge thanks for not swearing so that my kids can watch and learn. Keep up the great work! p.s.This is my fave of your vids so far.
There are three things I can count on with your videos, and I've seen a lot of them. 1: After you get the items out on to a tray you always say "Nice!" 2: You will talk with your mouth full and always apologize for it. and 3: You give the best descriptions of what you smell and taste, leaving us viewers with a great way to try and understand it. Love the videos man!
Man I've been binge watching your videos lol. I don't know why but its super fascinating and satisfying to see you not only open and give extensive history on these rations, but try the food as well. Keep up the cool videos man!
Seeing how well you review cigarettes makes me want to see you review some old cigars. I'm sure it'd be expensive but fun! Plus you seem to have the right palette for it, seeing how well you described the smooth turkish tobacco taste.
I think it's a mixture of Steve's soothing voice, his obvious knowledge, reverence and enthusiasm for his subject. His "Lets get this out on a tray, NICE," (which, imao, should be a ration--al catchphrase). Finally, that time-capsule feeling of better days...A potent mix. Keep 'em coming.
Steve - I'm not a big TH-cam user, but recently spent a little over 3 months at home recovering from multiple surgeries. I stumbled onto you pr channel quite by accident, and I'm hooked! I also wondered if he's gotten sick off them. I've seen his newer videos and he seems more cautious, but then he turns around and surprises me every time LMFAO!
steve i don't like commenting on many other channels but as i've said before you have the best channel out there mate. I pray for new content from you and whenever a new review comes out i'm all over it like NICE! keep them coming and as soon as I get a 70's uk forces ration i'm sending it out for you!
I love your channel so very much Steve! I watch for capturing my interest, I watch to laugh, I watch to calm down...you are just the man. keep smokin those war cigs!
My Grandpa traded a combat ration candy bar to a starving kid in Germany for a pristine party leader Walther PPK pistol during WWII. Dad has the pistol, it's in great shape, we shoot it often.
I don't smoke, but damn. That Camel packaging and the way you describe the taste and buzz makes me want to reach into the video and grab me one of those cigs. Awesome content! Keep it coming.

Damn, I wish I found you before my grandpa passed two months ago, he is Korean War vet, and I really never talked to him about rations. 7th cav 3rd battalion was his unit if you cared to know.
I don't understand why it's so exciting to watch Steve eat really old rations. This channel actually makes me want to buy an old mre just for the smokes lol.
