- A tutorial on how to repair a DPad on a Sony DualSense controller. I am using a model BDM-010, but most of the things I show you show apply to all versions. The directional pad can be stuck in a single direction, not responding, sticky, or mushy. In the later half of the video, I show how to tear it down the controller and get to the innerworkings, to work on the rubber conductive pads and the conductive film.

Wow Sony really went out of their way to make it as big of a pain in the ass as possible to fix these things. DS4 way easier to take apart
They soldered the usb port to the main motherboard, meaning if the usb port breaks there’s nothing you can do other than learn microsoldering or get a charging dock that uses the pins on the bottom
Solution 6 wound up being my saving grace. The down button on my d-pad (only that one) stopped working after my roommate used it last night. This saved me, thank you.

Thank you, my down d-pad was stuck tried all methods until I tear down the controller , cleaned the compartment of the d-pad with ear cleaner as you said and returned everything. Working great as new now ❤
Thnx. I think my issue was the membrane came loose. The little plastic part it slides over. I did everything else and put back together and it all worked out. Saved me quite a few dollars. Be careful about the start and snapshot buttons. I had to use a paper clip to avoid taking back apart to line them up with the rubbery backing.
This saved my controller! A piece of debris got under my d pad and once I cleaned it, its working good as normal! Thanks for the help

I followed this...took the controller apart. It's about a month old, so no dust or anything. I repositioned the rubber pad under the D pad, but didn't think that would do anything. Took me a while to get it back together because of the two bottom ribbons...then things weren't aligning eight, but I finally got her all put back together and it actually works like a charm. Saved me $70. Thanks for the video.
Thats exactly what happened to me! I had some ps4 controllers for 6 goddamn years and they never broke, but i bought a ps5 in november and it already broke. I swear sony made them easier to break for us to buy more...

Thanks for the guide. My niece spilled something sticky in the face buttons, so I needed to take it apart to clean it. All other guides I found only focus on replacing the sticks.
If I'm being completely honest I've no idea how mine broke but when I started taking it apart with the battery still connected and was testing the button it magically started working again so I decided to clean it and put it back together and everything started working again and the weird thing is it wasn't just the d-pad that stopped working originally now it magically works again thanks for showing how to properly clean it and take it apart

None of these solutions worked if they don’t work just smash ur controller on a table a couple times and if that doesn’t work then u need a new controller

A very good guide. I tried your suggestions up to 5. I was not prepared to open it, so I did one hail mary: hit the left side of the controller around 5 times with the palms of my hands. That fixed it.

Thank you bro, I have taken apart 4 PS3 and 5 PS4 pads (magnetic buttons, custom shells, scuff etc). I've done 3 PS3 revisions and 3 PS4 revisions. Never taken apart a PS5 dual sense, my D pads down button was not working.. after dismantling it had no dirt, no wear or tear? After reassembling the pad is working perfectly, so thank you.
Also omg those six axis and early dual shock 3 pads were so fiddly, PS4 ds4 a little less, PS5 pads it seems are easy to tear down. Lol I was dreading it.

IT Guy Here; my issue was d-pad left and right only weren’t working (top bottom did, brand new ps5) & I tried everything i could think of without opening controller (vacuum, reset, etc.). Saw this and the “blow-into-old-school-nintendo” method w/ mouth finally got it working. thank you!

Everything short of taking the controller apart didn’t work. I was a bit nervous to open it but your guide was great and it worked. Had a dpad button not working and was able to fix it.

i had a non responding down button. put q-tip in some alcohol, held the up button down and pushed qtip around down button so alcohol could get down in there worked button around, blew it out and repeated 3 times, works like new. Thank you for your video, didnt want to take the controller apart though.

Thanks for the tear down the pressure pad was ripped but was able to fix it using a ps4 pad just had to cut it to fit in the controller 😀
GUYS I HAVE THE FIX IF YOU DROPPED IT !! Turn your controller upside down and tap it a lot of times , press the opposite arrow and blow and then it should start working again !! I think it's some dust or a connector that moved

Thank you! I had to resort to solution 6. The down button on my d-pad suddenly stopped working. Which was strange because the controller had seen little use. Wiping the contact pad with alcohol seemed to fix it and saved me a buying a new controller!

Well it appears to have worked, by doing that whole process cleaning the ⬆️ on the D pad & blowing out any crud or dust n dirt build up in the sticks all fixed the issue. The issue being my 10.5 ur old son’s 11yr old friend was getting his ass handed to him my my boy on some good ol MK11 that he decided pounding the controller with the heel of his hand was perfectly acceptable. Well we didn’t realize when pushing up on the D pad it wouldn’t go up & when I would press to the right with the stick it would go forward one & would flip back to the left 2 times. So after cleaning it all & putting it back together it was working perfectly again. Thank u for the break down of how to strip it & make sure everything was clean & not damaged. I believe it may have gotten food crud down in it & my son’s 11yr old friend throwing tantrums dunked it up. At least now I don’t have to buy another new controller & put another $50 on top the price of some more external save drive memory extension. I’ gonna go 4 the terabyte internal extended hard drive. That way I got the 500 on the system, or mid 65bs ish. Thanks agiinn& great advice on photo each step 🤜🤛

Fixed! Thank you my dude. My left d-pad wasn’t working and it seemed like no amount of hitting the back of the controller or blowing into it would work. After opening it up it appeared that my problem was that the membrane was kinda “stuck down” behind the left d pad. I can see how shaking, blowing and hitting the controller from the back could have worked with more perseverance. Is fun to open it up anyway innit, like lego. Got me a 4000 gigawatt battery in there now too 😎 It’s like Christmas up in this bitch
Had to come back to this video just to see if there was something else I can do cuz I had the same problem again and is it turns out cleaning the contact points on the membrane to the motherboard immediately fixed the problem

When I put the little pin in the back of the controller to reset the PS5 controller. then it has started working so first try to reset the controller where there is a button on the right side of the Sony symbol hold it down until for like 5 to 10 seconds instead of recess and it worked for me thank you

So my left direction on my dpad wasnt working, took it apart, didnt notice anything wrong, as i was putting it back together I notcied it still wasnt working. However, i noticed it works when i press against the back of the motherboard while pressing left on the dpad Simultaneously. So how do i fix this, is it something loose ? Or could it be something wrong with my membrane ? It looked normal

Thanks good video. I wish you wouldve shown pictures of other models bc i broke one of the cables when taking out the green pad. But its my bad for not checking (it was the mic cable and i dont use mics so its ok) good video tho it fixed my problem 9.5/10

My arrow was loose and I check it out and it snapped in half so I had to hit glue it and now it works like a charm

Ended up having to disassemble my controller since the right button on my d pad just stopped working. Not sure what step fixed the issue but when I put everything back together the controller worked perfectly
My dpad registers a button press when I click the l3 in a left caddycorner direction. Any idea why that may happen

I'm still not sure what happened but removing the membrane and putting it back on again somehow fixed the problem. After I put the controller back together again everything worked like normal.

My dualsense platine says it’s a bdm 010 i need to change the rubber pads.my question is,is the bdm 020 also works on my controller?
I'm not sure. If it were me, I would not take the chance. I would just order ones that say BDM 010 in the listing.
I did the cardboard method, as one of my controllers’ D-pad wasn’t working too well, the right one specifically, and now it does… better than before this, but still not like the newer controller I have. Ah well. These are things that just wear down over time, yes? 😞
I got a floss pick and scooped around the edges and inside the d pad. Seemed to knock loose whatever grime was in there.
Another way might be because the button under the dpad is jammed so just press down on it really hard and hold it and if it’s not broken it will work again
I took apart my ps5 controller five times and it still drifts and the Dpad buttons on the left still don’t work because I need to select that button to enter my password to get to the main screen
