    Robert the cleaner you want to use is called D2. Spray it on and then leave it alone for a few weeks. Do not use any scrub brushes on the stones as it can and will damage the stones long term. Mother nature will work on it along with the D2 to clean the stone. This is the cleaner that the VA uses to clean all the head stones in all National cemeteries.

    • @cmg6848
      @cmg6848 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You need to watch TH-cam videos of graves being cleaned using D/2 as they do use soft brushes and it doesn't damage the stones. I have cleaned many family stones so I know what I am talking about.

    • @jamesbass9797
      @jamesbass9797 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmg6848 -- Well, here's you something new to think about. While you can use a soft bristle brush, I simply do not recommend it and here's why. Literally thousands of headstones are very old. A person could inadvertently apply to much elbow grease while scrubbing and crack a stone internally which will grow in size over time and then fall apart. The older the stone the easier it will be to damage one. The outer surface of the stone. Letterings on the stones themselves. Brushes could scrub off or wear down the stones lettering. Again, the older the stone the easier it will happen. This is why I highly recommend using the spray and walk away method. The last thing I want to be is an unwilling participant in damaging any headstone. Now, you can use which method you want. It's up to you but these are the reasons why I only use D2 spray on method. I have been cleaning headstones for well over 35 years. I can point out stones that I cleaned 35 years ago and there is no damage to any of them. So yes, I know a little bit about what I'm talking about as well.

    • @cmg6848
      @cmg6848 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @James Bass Well here's the thing, you have no video's showing "your expertise" and there are plenty of video's showing experienced stone masons and conservators using brushes, also D/2 is a very recent product so try again lol.

    • @jamesbass9797
      @jamesbass9797 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmg6848 Be happy to. D2 did not exist years ago when I first started cleaning head stones. TH-cam didn't exist back then either. As far as anything recent goes I simply just don't give a crap about making videos. Don't know how to make them and simply not going to learn how at this stage in my life. Back then I used what most everyone else used including the Government. Bleach! I also had sense enough to know that bleach had a high concentration of salt in it. So, I did a lot of old-fashioned research back then talking to people over the phone in the VA network and head stone manufacturers and almost all of them agreed on the fact that bleach could have long term effects on head stones. Back then the only thing we could do was thoroughly rinse the stones after cleaning them. Which I always did. Now, I have better things to do than bandy back and forth with the likes of you. Have a good day.

    Robert, James Bass is 100% correct when he states that D2 is the best and should be the ONLY thin you use on any headstones. The other Robert used it on some of the Byrd Headstones in another cemetery. Looks like those abivorities really went nuts and just keep growing all over. You and your wife did a great job in cutting a lot of that back and getting rid of the sapplings in the middle of them both.. ANYONE that said Dawn soap is dead wrong and NEVER use it on headstone. D2 ONLY..

    On another note, the tree stumps can be treated with Tordon RTU.
    It has a pour spout and just put it around the first ring closest to the bark.
    Sparingly use it. The tree won’t come back.
    If you can cut the tree down as close to the ground as you can.
