How to Clean Veteran Headstones Using D/2 Biological Solution

  • Learn how to properly clean a veteran headstone using D/2 Biological Solution. D/2 is the product used at all National Cemeteries to clean more than 3 million veteran headstones. In this video, Trae Zipperer, Founder of Honor Your DNA, demonstrates how to clean a veteran headstone by showing the tools, supplies, and techniques required to transform an algae and grime covered veteran headstone into a respectfully clean monument. All veteran headstones located outside National Cemeteries should look as though they too belong in Arlington. Trae Zipperer has initiated an objective for patriotic Americans to clean every veteran headstone in America by Memorial Day. This video will serve as a detailed informative guide for volunteers to watch before cleaning their first veteran headstone. Once a veteran headstone has been cleaned properly, the volunteer should mark their calendar to return one year later to spray the veteran headstone with a coating of D/2 Biological Solution as an annual preventative maintenance plan.

If that spray can hurt your skin or eyes, it could hurt your lungs too. It takes that moss, mold, & dirt off so quickly, it certainly must be strong. As you are spraying, fine invisible-to-the-eye particles are swirling around & spread out from the initial stream. @@lynnlindsay4480 I believe certain things are sacred. Veteran graves qualify as sacred ground. When a young man or woman lays down their life for the country we consider to be our sovereign, I believe there exists an implicit promise that we the future generations will care for their graves. They never married, never had children, and as you mention, they have no descendants to clean their headstone. I grew up in the shadow of an American hero, my grandfather, a WWII combat soldier. As a boy, trying to imagine what it was like for my grandfather to have done what he did, to have witnessed the horrors of war up close, I acquired a deep appreciation for those who established and maintained this country I consider to be my sovereign. We cannot thank them enough for the place we call home today. The least we can do is keep their veteran headstones clean.

I'm really touched. So many of these soldiers may not have a family anymore to come to look after them, and you're taking the time to make sure they look their best. As a Genealogist, I think about this as I research family lines that went back overseas during the Revolutionary War, or left the state, or never had children, or even those who never knew the names of their ancestors. This is our touchstone to our history. Thank you so much for all you do. I recently found my 5 times great Grandmother's resting place two hours from where I live (I didn't grow up in the area) and the photos of her stone broke my heart. We haven't forgotten that France helped us win our independence! My grandfather returned the favor when he stepped off the landing craft at Normandy. I'm not sure where you can purchase D/2 Biological Solution in France, so visit the manufacturer's website at D2bio.com. They sell the product through distributors, so maybe they have a distributor in France. I'm sure they will assist you. I spoke with a woman cleaning veteran headstones at one of my events. I recognized her French accent. She said she was from Normandy and her grandfather had been killed in action during World War I. We all have a personal connection to military veterans. My great uncle was killed in action during the Battle of the Atlantic. He went down with his ship, his body never recovered, but his name is etched on the wall at Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial in England. I requested a photo of his name. They fill the etched names with sand from the beaches of Normandy before taking the photos. This is an example of the measures we must take to honor our military heroes. The least we can do is clean their headstones. Thank you for joining this cause in France. I am grateful.

My ancestors came to America from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, and Austria between 1631 and 1750, prior to the Revolutionary War. So if I can find my ancestors buried in Europe, their headstones will be 250-400 years old. Getting permission is the first step before cleaning headstones, or anything else in a cemetery. Do No Harm is the motto for preservationists, so a good cemetery steward will say NO until they are comfortable you will Do No Harm. Never use bleach or any cleaner harsh to natural stone, because they destroy the stone over time. The safe cleaners that do no harm contain active ingredients known as Quaternary Ammonium Compounds "QUATS".

While attempting to gain permission from a city to clean African American veteran headstones in their historically segregated cemeteries, I discovered one of the main reasons why veteran headstones are covered in disgraceful biological scum is because people don't know how to clean headstones properly.
