Randy Rhoads was one guitarist who took my playing to another level. When trying to properly play his songs I really had to adjust my technique to get it done and he made me a better player for it. What's scary is what he could have been because he was only getting better. Ozzy's set list after so many years still being 80 percent Rhoads era material is a testament to the man's genius.
I remember the day Randy died. I was a huge huge fan. My bestfriend at the time called me up and filled me in. The floor just fell out from under me that day. That same friend called me and told me about Eddie too all these years later.
When it comes to the Randy vs Eddie debate, it should be noted that Randy only recorded 2 albums versus 12 from Eddie. Then again, debating who’s better is pointless. There is no “better.” They’re completely different players with totally different approaches. What a blessing that we had them both!
The debate on who was better is completely subjective especially at that level. Eddie was definitely more influential. It's really only him and Jimi when it comes to revolutionizing the electric guitar on that kind of creative level. I personally prefer Randy's phrasing and style. That's just what my ear is slightly more attracted to. I've always preferred my music a bit darker sounding which is the reason I spun those first two Ozzy records a lot more than any Van Halen. The Quiet Riot stuff would've been a closer comparison and in that case I would've been on the VH side back then if I was forced to choose. I don't know who pissed in Randy's cheerios (maybe Ozzy?) but he definitely started to find his sound and his playing was accelerating at an astonishing rate. Even his sister has commented how in those few years after joining Ozzy his skills were vastly improving.
Right! Randy to ME, is more inspiring and the reason I play Guitar, but that's not the same as saying "Randy is better". ( Like I used to in High School lol ) Their approaches and styles are so different, we can draw inspiration and passion from BOTH Players :)

I was in SoCal and a "trying" guitarist back in the 70's & 80's. I was in highschool from '76 to '80 and I'll tell ya, RR and EVH were hot tickets to see and try to emulate... The Southbay scene was on fire back then too, ans well as the San Fernando Valley. Metallica, Megadeth, Ratt, Dokken, LA Guns, Hanoi Rocks & others. Magic time to be in SoCal... Today I'm glad I left there though...
You gotta remember, Eddie was sounding like Eddie all the way back in 1973. If you listen to those early bootleg VH recordings, you can really tell HE was the next up-and-coming guitarist. I don’t know if I can say the same about Randy. He said himself he was heavily influenced by Eddie. I mean, George Lynch said everyone was trying to sound like Eddie when he came around. It’s really remarkable stuff.
"CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG"!. Randy n Eddie feud? Please ! They where both great guitar virtuoso's . They both had there own style and sound. Unfortunately Randy wasn't around long enough to share his talent with the world. He was a phenomenal guitarist. As Dave stated Eddie inspired him to pick up the guitar as I was also inspired by Eddie as well. In heaven there are no grudges I'm sure that heaven is electric as could be. Great lesson just a couple days ahead of what would have been Randy's 64th birthday, Dec.6th. Did you know that George Lynch took over for Randy at Musonia as a guitar teacher when he lost the gig and Randy went on tour with Ozzy ? Poor George got snubbed by Jake E. Lee too !
I love Randy and EVH and often go back-and-forth as to which one I prefer. Music scholars will (if not already) analyze their styles _and_ philosophies, which are so different. To me, Randy painted creative masterpieces within boundaries/constraints (like Mozart), whereas Eddie (like Beethoven, or Debussy) gleefully abandoned all boundaries. Neither is "right" nor "better": it just _is_, and we are all better for it.
Personally I would have to include George Lynch in this conversation even tho his rythm playing was elementary on the early Dokken albums. Leadwise, he's definitely in the room!

Randy was born in Santa Monica but grew up in Burbank and his mom had a school he taught in that was located in North Hollywood. I live in LA and it's hard to get your head around the area but it's vast. Thanks for another amazing lesson! The more on Randy the better!
When I was in Jr High and part of High School, the Eddie and Randy argument came up almost daily. I was firmly in the EVH camp but always loved both players.
Randy was the one who made me play guitar. I heard Over the Mountain. Then I had to get a guitar. I had the Randy Rhoads Star Licks cassette and booklet. That's how I started playing. I love his style. I wish I understood what he did a little better. There were some pretty heavy mode things that he would use in his leads. Just like there would be one or two notes that jumped out in a lead against the chord. Anyway thank you! That was a great lesson! I love all the stuff you talked about.
Thank you for recognizing how different Randy and Eddie's styles were. Eddie claimed he stole his moves from him and Randy even said he copied him. I love both as you say. I am partial to Randy. He inspired me to get classical training as well.
RR was an exceptional talent who some say was "BORED" with the whole rock star thing ... IDK ... his legacy will live on forever due to his incredible playing on the two OZZY studio recordings and the one live recording released posthumously ... I never met him but I did see him play in Norman Oklahoma on Feb 25th 1982 with UFO opening up ... still have the ticket stub ... thanks for the deep dive back in time and exciting some special memories ... love the content !!!
I saw the same show with Ozzy and UFO in Dallas,Texas on February 20,1982. It's still unbelievable that the world would lose Randy only a few weeks later.

Both Eddie and Randy blew me away first time I heard them..I saw Van Halen January 1980, it was my first concert without adult supervision, I was 12 , it was 1980..times were different. Randy was killed 3 months before I could see him, I had tickets to the show...I was devastated. Even in the 80s, there was an EVH vs. Randy with the fans..like you, I liked them both, but Randy will always be my biggest influence.
That last 'rolling' run is a thing of beauty. There was no competition for me. I loved both Randy and Eddie. Randy just had this magical beauty and melody to his playing.

Yeah, I've noticed the same. I was told for many years that wrist movement was key but to me there seems to be an equal combination of both. I remember reading an interview with Kerry King where he said Mustaine taught him to use his thumb. When I was practicing growing up I would often catch myself moving the thumb because to me it was just naturally more efficient in some areas yet I had all these instructional books emphasizing wrist movement. Maybe they were targeting the wrist a lot more because beginners tend to use their arm? I don't know but when I play a lot of lead licks that cross strings I naturally incorporate thumb movement like I see Dave doing. I too would like to hear his thoughts on this because he's not only a great player but also a great teacher.

Just like you, Randy influenced me to learn classical guitar back when I was in Jr High. It’s funny because at 12 I went to get lessons and I told the teacher I wanted to learn how to play classical guitar. He looked at me like I had bugs coming out my nose.

Very nice lesson, The Last Lick is the Scalar Sequence is what I have been talking about this is what Randy Rhoads is all about is creating those scalar sequences and the SHIFTS which he does 3 different shifts. If you look at the "Shifting points" they are starting at different points of the scale degrees either a major 2nd back or minor 3rd back FROM the last ending note of the lick run. You will shift back a major 2nd or minor 3rd back from the last ending note and start the scalar sequence again. This Shifting points are a major part of Randy Rhoads way of playing scalar sequencing because without the Shifting points you would just move the scalar sequence down consecutively compared to how he will shift and start the whole scalar sequence on another scale degree. You can use the guitar pick as a finger to fret the harmonic and use your middle finger to pluck the string BEHIND the guitar pick using the guitar pick as the finger. The way you're going it might make it sound like pinch harmonics when using the thumb BEFORE the guitar pick. If you can find more Randy Rhoads scalar sequencing patterns would be nice to learn from. Keep pressuring Dave Brewster to make more lessons like this and maybe he can teach more about the shifting points and scalar sequencing

Growing up when I found KISS it made me get a guitar and want to play but when I heard Randy, now that made me want to "learn" and love guitar!!!!!

Agree they are totally different. But I see it differently, Randy thinking outside the box while EVH playing inside the box.

Something I noticed about the plucking harmonics is that evh tapped the harmonics instead which I think it has the same effect if not easy to play

When I was practicing growing up I would often catch myself moving the thumb because to me it was just naturally more efficient in some areas yet I had all these instructional books emphasizing wrist movement. Maybe they were targeting the wrist a lot more because beginners tend to use their arm? I don't know but when I play a lot of lead licks that cross strings I naturally incorporate thumb movement like I see Dave doing.
I too would like to hear his thoughts on this because he's not only a great player but also a great teacher.
Look up Sarod picking it is well established. Pebber Brown has taught alot of speed pickers this style like Buckethead and others.

Just like you, Randy influenced me to learn classical guitar back when I was in Jr High. It’s funny because at 12 I went to get lessons and I told the teacher I wanted to learn how to play classical guitar. He looked at me like I had bugs coming out my nose.

Very nice lesson, The Last Lick is the Scalar Sequence is what I have been talking about this is what Randy Rhoads is all about is creating those scalar sequences and the SHIFTS which he does 3 different shifts. If you look at the "Shifting points" they are starting at different points of the scale degrees either a major 2nd back or minor 3rd back FROM the last ending note of the lick run. You will shift back a major 2nd or minor 3rd back from the last ending note and start the scalar sequence again. This Shifting points are a major part of Randy Rhoads way of playing scalar sequencing because without the Shifting points you would just move the scalar sequence down consecutively compared to how he will shift and start the whole scalar sequence on another scale degree. You can use the guitar pick as a finger to fret the harmonic and use your middle finger to pluck the string BEHIND the guitar pick using the guitar pick as the finger. The way you're going it might make it sound like pinch harmonics when using the thumb BEFORE the guitar pick. If you can find more Randy Rhoads scalar sequencing patterns would be nice to learn from. Keep pressuring Dave Brewster to make more lessons like this and maybe he can teach more about the shifting points and scalar sequencing
