That story of Randy seeking out guitar teachers in any town they went is the earliest memory I have of him. It just highlights his humility. Awesome!
How great would Rhandy be today if he were still alive. Probably the best Metal / Rock guitar player ever, bar none.

Saw him with Ozzy in 1982. Unbelievably great.

Wanna know what's funny. He would do exactly that. While on tour, at every stop Randy would find the best classical guitar instructor and have him come to his hotel room to give Randy a lesson. That's no joke. He also told Ozzy that he was going to quit after his last tour. He wanted to be a Professor in Classical guitar. Oh, and Randy was bangin' Sharon. It was before her and Ozzy got together.
What really sucked was being a student next to randy. He was at a very prestigious classical music school and randy and this one other dude(forgot his name obviously). They were neck and neck so to speak they both new only one hit it big for some reason but when randy auditioned for ozzy, ozzy said it was like god coming into his life when he heard randy play...
Meanwhile Randy took lessons all over the world.
Randy was on another level. Saw him live before he died. He was just simply amazing

Hello Fil. I enjoyed your commentary on this. I would just like to say that I was a cameraman on this studio shoot at WUHF for the After Hours show (you can see me on hand held camera behind the drum kit in a couple shots) and all the guys were really great. Ozzy in particular was just a very nice gentleman. I remember him being very quiet. Of course we didn't know at the time that we were recording some of the only existing footage of Randy. Such a talent- gone too soon

Do you have any other things you can tell us about the after hours show???? Please!!! It would be great to hear and maybe you know of more footage that night of Randy and other things like a conversation with him etc etc.... this is some of the cleanest footage of him and I have a feeling someone out there has more from other shows as well.....

I agree. One of the greatest but so many didn't really get his ability. He was also humble and way ahead of his years. He was one of the more powerful influences behind symphonic metal.

Randy Rhoads will always be one of the Best Guitar players ever, I seen him 5 times and blew me away everytime. RIP
Randy was such a humble and shy person. Never bragged about his playing. We were all going nuts and he's like, oh I have to do this or that better. I also love that he never hid his playing on stage. As a teacher it's like he was giving lessons from the stage. A great loss when he died.

Feel so lucky that I saw Ozzy’s first solo tour. This young guitarist came out of nowhere and just blew everyone away!
There are very few guitarist that actually make me shed a tear while listening. Randy is one of those players. Even when I was 11, back in 1981...I remember actually getting emotional when I heard him play. At that time I didn't know much about him, but I knew how it made me feel. It still amazes me to this day. Great video...I really enjoyed it. :)

Saw him twice once in Cincinnati OH next night I'm Lexington KY, diary of a madman tour
I like how Randy's solid knowledge of music theory really showed in his riffs and solos. Like in this song in particular, how he plays off the concept that every major key has a relative minor. He effortlessly weaves back and forth between A major and F sharp minor and has such a melodic flow and smoothness about it all. It's a testament to how dedicated he was to his chosen craft.
Randy Rhoads died in the plane crash the day before my birthday in 1982. I already knew who he was, along with Ozzy. I grew up in Metro Detroit, and my Uncle Mike played in a garage band with some of his buddies, and they played Rock. By the late 70's they had me turned onto Black Sabbath, Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, The Stones, and others.
Ozzy was, and still is my favorite, and Randy Rhoads in 1981-82 was my favorite guitar player. Since then I have seen Ozzy reunite with Black Sabbath in concert, I have seen Dio with Black Sabbath in concert, and have seen Ozzy solo in concert a number of times. My favorite Ozzy moment in concert was at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, March 28th 1992. The band played songs from the Randy Rhoads days and also songs from the "No More Tears" album they were supporting. The show was OFF THE RAILS, AMAZING! and at the end of the show, Ozzy invited the crowd up on stage...CRAZY! So me and my buddies crashed our way to the stage and made it up there with Ozzy and the band...IT WAS MAYHEM! I actually got to put my arm around Zakk Wylde for a second while he was playing. It was Awesome! but I wish it was Randy.
R.I.P. Randy Rhoads, your guitar and music artistry and influence will last the test of time! thanks for the video again...I'll watch more.

I remember the first time I heard "Blizzard of Ozz". It was as jaw dropping as when the first time I heard Van Halen. All I could think was "who is that guitar player". His playing brought a new realm to metal. Those first 2 Ozzy albums remain my top favorite albums of all time. Great post Phil !

Yep .. Eddie is why I yearned to play and begged my father for a guitar and Randy sparked my curiosity even further into a different style that was emerging every week in the early 80's .. Fumbling through those Mel Bay 2000 chord books and building the most difficult chords wondering how the hell is it done . and why ? Then scales , modes , reading music .. Head exploding .. Think I did relatively good when our band opened for Yngwie years later .. I never had a chance to apologize to him for that

It's not only listening to such an amazing musician. It's also about reading all the beautiful words of those many describing his technique and style. It makes you feel that the world is better than you usually think and that there is a future for mankind, after all.
I am born the same day as Randy 12/06 and my moms name is also Dolores. I met him at the Riverside theatre during the Blizzard of Oz tour. We had a long wonderful conversation before the gig became instant friends and shared our deep love of classical music...Elvis Presley and Gary Moore....RIP Randy...very insightful Fast flinging fingers Fil...
I commented earlier on the other Randy reaction vid. Randy literally becomes 3 guitarists in the way that he goes in and out of rhythms ,fills,etc… He is still King for a Reason. Randys "bag of tricks" was near endless. Randys works are very much like songs within songs within songs. Its easy too understand why Ozzy is in Heaven in many vid shots. The band is completely one precise unit.
What I love so much about Randy and EVH are the incredible mix of techniques and their distinctive sound. Absolutely love them both.....

Randy always had improvisation fill runs in between Rhythm sections. Those improvisation fills added color and variations to the song actually enhancing the song and taking the listener to unexpected melodic passages

He was 1000% the best at adding awesome fill ins when he played live that weren't on the album. It's a big reason why I think he was the greatest live guitar player there was, one of the few that sounded even better live than he did on the album !
Randy will always be my most influential player. I learned so much from playing his work. A truly, truly gifted player.
One of my top 3 favorite guitarists of all time. Right up there with Steve Vai and Marty Friedman. Everything Randy played was perfect in melodic sense and technique.
Had the pleasure of meeting Randy's father .He sat with me in my dressing room while i warmed up before my show!! He was the MC that night.As he listened to me play Arpeggios -he started to open up about how much he enjoyed my playing but also how he missed his son.He said it was painful when they had to sell the house he grew up in.He had to clean out the bedroom with the baseball bats and skateboards etc. He was a very kind and misses his son.Was very sad but a pleasure to spend time with Randy's Dad as well.

Randy made Ozzy relevant again after he was booted out of Black Sabbath. In fact Randy tried out Ozzy didn't realize how really good he was. So sad that his life was taken when he was so young.
You had a supposed has-been Rockstar singer,two veterans and a rookie guitarist who came together to create two of the most iconic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal albums in music history..and yes Ozzy knew what he had in Randy...Randy helped resurrect Ozzy's career,But the Music business is a nasty business....Just look at it this way. When Randy announced he wanted out,he was neck deep in the Diary of A Madman tour,the album was a smashing hit, had already seen Lee and Bob get screwed from the royalties and get kicked out before the US tour of Blizzard,he probably didn't like THAT side of the business,Ozzy and Randy had a fistfight during a breakfast over this-his planning to leave-,Sharon had backed Randy into a corner and "REMINDED" him of his legal contract to stick around.. he agreed to do one live album and one studio and that was it... Later when he passed Kelly Garni says that Sharon flew to Cali. 24-48 hrs after Randy passed to change the contract to avoid paying his family the royalties he was due. The family took OzzyCo. to court and they backpedaled to move.......

He's a music insider tho, if he criticized anyone they wouldn't send him their tracks. So it's different. Might wanna check it out if you haven't.
I like this channel because Fil really gets into what just the guitarist doing as a whole while staying independent of the industry. It's much more of a fellow guitarist's viewpoint here. Which is just as cool. 👍

I credit him with inventing neo-classical shred metal. Even though he was so much more. Great video \m/

Out of all the proto-metal chops guitarists, Randy is my favorite. His harmonic choices just speak to me. The way he weaves in and out of standard blues guitar stuff and classical lines.. it’s just incredibly inventive for the time. And like all the greats, it’s emotive. Some chops guitarists it starts to sound like typing fast instead of music. But not his solos, always sounds like he’s fighting for every inch of that guitar and winning. Sad we didn’t get to hear more from him 💙

You got Randy right on. He did what a lot of young classical musicians did at that time which was jumping on the Rock boat, which I’m sure helped so many guitar players. But Randy was so enjoyable to listen to, could you picture with his knowledge of music what he would be like today. There was a tribute to Ozzy the band played Crazy Train. It took 3 guitar players to do what 1 Randy Roads did.

Could you imagine if Randy was alive today? He would've done things on the guitar we couldn't even dream of. He would of had his own guitar probably better then Les Paul.

Actually randy was leaving ozzy band to get his degree in classical music and start a new career as a classical guitar teacher. He hated touring and being a rock star, was leaving it all behind

Just watching Randy play is mesmerizing. He didn't even look at the neck/fretboard. His fingers just automatically glided to where they were supposed to go. I've been a Randy freak for many years and I think he would have come back to playing rock even if he left Ozzy. I could see him putting together a group of his own and doing projects of various kinds of music. And I have to say this, even though Randy died way too young and he had so much more to give us, I don't think Jake E. Lee gets enough credit for replacing Randy and playing some great guitar of his own to keep Ozzy's musical career going. Jake was his own man and was different than Randy, but his playing was very impressive and kept Ozzy relevant when Ozzy could have hung it up and never played again after Randy died. Jake's playing on the first Badlands album is some of the best playing I've ever heard. He didn't have Randy's charisma, but the music was right there with Randy's, and Ozzy should be grateful that Jake helped him to make that transition after Randy.

Saw Randy in '82 on the Blizzard of Oz tour, Saw Ozzy with Jake E Lee the next year with Vandenberg opening up, and haven't had any desire to see Ozzy in 36 years. The first two records are the only ones that matter.

I was a 12-year-old wanna be rock guitarist during Rhoads era and he was always an idol. Always tried but never mastered playing Randy licks in garage band days and even managed to slip a few in the 90's when playing professionally with alt/rock grunge bands. Yep no matter what genre or era Randy reigns supreme RIP great one.

Fil I am not sure what I enjoyed more watching Randy or watching your reaction to Randy. I can tell you have some serious admiration for this guy because of how you speak about him. I always think it's cool when someone with serious skills like yourself shows the vulnerable side of themselves when they analyze someone else who had skills of his level. I am sure as a teacher you are asked to teach his style which is no easy feat for anyone even Randy Himself. I really enjoyed this video two-fold. one for Randy and one for you. Keep rocking brother.
Some say, and I trust it's true: The reason Randy had a white Les Paul, is because back in 1972 he went to see David Bowie ( during his Ziggy era), and Bowie's guitarist at the time was Mick Ronson, who had a Les Paul black custom, with a stripped top. Randy loved Mick's stage presence so much, he went out and bought that white Les Paul. Even when you see Randy here, you see that he adopted that Mick Ronson stage presence. Both were classically trained, both did a lot of work when it comes to writing music for their band.
Randy was heavily influenced by Mick Ronson. It's so sad that even today Mick Ronsons playing and all the guitarists he influenced goes without mention. The late Mick Ronson was by far one of the top influential players of all time! Glad to see at least someone besides myself recognizes the Mick Ronson relationship here.
According to Randy himself, he was given that white Les Paul, he didn't buy it. I want to say that I read an interview where the guy that owned a studio where Quiet Riot was recording gave him the guitar, but Premiere Guitar on their page about Randy's guitars say that the band (Quiet Riot) all chipped in and bought him the guitar.
Mick Ronson was awesome in his own right. He could get some amazing things to come from his guitar
Man I remember when this footage appeared in youtube 5 or 6 years ago. With so little footage of Randy, this was like a unbelievable revelation, and the production on the video isn't awful. I think there are 4 songs.

What impresses me the most about Randy's playing was how every single part of his impressive technical vocabulary was always used so tastefully to express musically VALID ideas. No phrase, or run, or fill ever seemed to be out of place, or excessive, with all of those individual parts building towards a clear goal like a beautifully told story. A phenomenal player who we lost far far too soon.

Thank you for giving such a great commentary about Randy’s playing abilities. Add some little known facts about his background as well. I saw him in concert with Ozzy back in the day, and he gained an avid fan. His passing was tragic, and he is missed by those that saw the talent and emotion he put into his performances. I agree he would stand out amount the best guitarists in the world today. Kudos to you, and RIP Randy.
I would NEVER be able to see this much from watching someone playing a guitar. It's so nice listening to someone with this amount of knowledge, learning so much.
Randy was and still is such a huge influence to guitar players everywhere,,,we lost so much when Randy died,,,,I can only imagine what more he would have given us musically,,,,
I've only watched a couple of your videos, but our opinions seem very similar.
I 've always loved how Randy could blend his awesome rythem with his kick ass leads without missing a beat. You're right. 3 man band with a ton going on. Fun stuff.

Randy Rhoads paired with Ozzy in the early 80's was Pure Musical Magic! Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman are two of the best Hard Rock/Metal albums of All-Time. I listen to them often. Thanks for the video!

I am 54 years old I saw Blizzard of Oz tour in 1981 at Indianapolis circle theater with def leppard opening the high and dry lp....I got so lucky to be at front stage so close that randy could sweat on us most awesome thing I ever saw in my life changed me I was and still to this day a Randy fan . And better yet got to kinda get to know Rudy Sarzo and chat on internet from time to time . When we lost him I cried for days my hero was gone now through my music career I have got to meet Kelle Rhoads as well is just amazing I only wished I could of got to meet Randy . there will never be another thank you Randy,Rudy,Tommy and ozzy I love you for that music in my day

I never got to see RR live but Crazy Train was one of the first hooks I learned on that classical guitar when I was a kid in the 80’s. Iconic sound. You guys are so lucky.

I also keep coming back to this Randy video. I think Randy was a guitar God and I love how Fil talks about him, giving him the praise he so deserved. He was leaving Ozzy to go play classical for a while. We will never know just what break throughs Randy was yet to make on guitar. So so sad he was taken so young. RIP Randy we love and miss you.

Appreciate your analysis Phil. I’ve always been a fan of the late Randy Rhoads. Tasteful and passionate, he was succinct and deliberate, his rhythm and ability to enhance the others in the band were certainly rare. He truly expanded their musical style with his open mind and willingness to keep learning. I personally love his classical influence!

The Tribute album is one of the best photos of them together. Epic. Tragic how we lost Randy.
You have GOTTA do the song DIARY OF A MADMAN! IMo it is his masterpiece, and criminally underrated. The amount of guitar work going on is amazing! The classical guitar work with the very subtle variations, the building of the song, the feel, building to the amazing solo, still brings shivers after all these years. I had my tickets in hand for that tour, which was my first big show, and he passed a month before.
