Randy Rhoads Diminished Secrets

  • Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with Randy Rhoads Diminished Secrets. As I admitted in the video, I've had a TON of requests for Randy Rhoads piling up lately, and I figured this lesson would be a good one to address some of those requests that have poured in - so let's dive in!
This lesson revolves around something very specific hiding in Randy's legendary playing style, and that's the use of diminished tonalities in his music. I went the extra mile for this lesson and actually pulled out the transcription books for Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary Of A Madman, and Tribute. Within the books, I scoured around looking for any licks, fills, or solos where Randy noticibly dove into diminished flavors and sounds.
The ideas shared in this lesson include a brief breakdown of the three different types of diminished tonalities heard/found in music, a two-part analysis of some diminished seventh arpeggio runs found in Randy's live 'Tribute' guitar solo, a variation of these ideas as heard in the solo from 'Steal Away (The Night),' and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Randy Rhoads fan, a LNL viewer that's been patiently waiting for more Rhoads action on the channel, a player wanting to explore diminished chords/arpeggios in music, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

English players are trilling fools, but no one touches Dave Murray when it comes to trills. All he can do, but man, does he do it well. So much that very few notice he only has ONE lick. It's the same lick every solo, but it never gets old. He just changes keys and modes Aeolian, Dorian, and Minor Pentatonic.

Such a great point you made about how it seems like he used diminished licks all the time even though he really didn't. He was so unique & instantly recognizable that each of his many "Randyisms" is like that. They might just be on 2 or 3 songs but it always seems like more. It could also be because we only got those 2 albums + Tribute and have listened so many times and can hear every note in our heads at this point.

It was Randy Rhoads that made me realize as a teenager in the mid-90s how he used classical elements in rock music..... and I now realize that it was many of these diminished licks that made me turn my head and start studying his music as well as Theory in conjunction with classical music in general.... this lesson really helps bridge the gap of what he was approaching theoretically and how to apply it to your own playing.. great lesson, thank you very much

I was 20 when Randy died. Because he was a little older than me, I don’t think his youth struck me back then. But it sure as hell strikes me now. What an absolute tragedy. An avoidable, disgusting tragedy. The fact that Randy was possibly struggling with the pilot to save those on the bus, makes the pain I still feel even worse. Not only was he a musical genius, and a loyal friend and bandmate, he was also a good kid. One that any parent would be proud to have as their own.

Mr. Rhoads is the greatest composer of melodic and memorable guitar licks and runs. His mother taught him piano and he learned music theory and why this sounds good together. Well balanced with his technical virtuosity on the electric guitar …combined with playing it live at deafening levels through his own pedal board. He was an educated guitarist and a wonderful human being …a kind hearted musician that is missed by us all.
