  • Tana stormed onto the scene a few months ago to loads of fanfare and hundreds of PKM enthusiasts clamoring to join its waitlist. But does the Roam Research-inspired outliner live up to all the hype? Let's find out.

    Thanks. After 35 years as a software dev, I don't use anything where I don't have control of the data and backups. I'm sure they won't steal away anyone who knows what they are doing from logseq or Obsidian, but I suppose that's not their target audience. I have noticed an increasing trend for time wasting by trying to get the many plugins to work together to create highly complex workflows. I'm retired so I can play as much as I want or write my own Obsidian plugins. The TH-cam gurus make never ending videos as that's one of their income streams. For people who just want some PKM it seems very easy to get sucked into system design.

      So true. Never pick an app that makes keeping up with its development a constant project!

      I agree -- I like to stay in control of my data as much as possible, especially in this realm of things.

    I was shocked to get an invite as soon as I did. I'm currently using it for a couple of databases that are clunky to make in my main Obsidian vault with Dataview, and I would strongly prefer it for collaborative knowledge management. However, local-first, interop and privacy are key for my needs as well, and I truly cannot wait for Datacore!

    Thanks for the video. I signed up to be included but have remained in the Tana waiting list for 2 months now. However, I'm well settled in Obsidian and doubt I need to change.

      Obsidian does just about everything!

    • @MarkGoodsonCambridge

      Yeah, same here. I have access to Tana and "had a play" and keep looping back for another look but fundamentally it doesn't solve any problems for me. I'm sure super tags are very powerful but there's nothing they let me do that I can't do with Obsidian and Dataview. Plus Obsidian are working on metadata improvements, so there's a good chance they will release super tag style features. Also at one point I was outline-based (Workflowy) but I now like being able to mix & match long-form and outlines (using Outliner plugin).

    I waitlisted on tana months ago. It just popped into my head today. Are only ppl making videos about it using it?

    • @EffectiveCo
      @EffectiveCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very possible. I haven’t bought into the hype, so I wanted to really see if it was worth it. I don’t think it delivers on its groundbreaking promises unfortunately, and the loooooong waitlist only breeds discontent among an excited possible user base.

  • @marmav
    @marmav ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I used it for a while, and it is only just another note-taking app.
    It definitely cannot replace notion.... and it's not suitable for calendars/tasks. Only for daily journaling, maybe tracking books or movies... stuff like that. Mostly disappointed meh

    Even if you like the functions, Tana seems very glitchy and not ready for prime time to me. It’s definitely an improvement over Roam, though, with its slow development and troubled founder. If you’re on Roam and don’t like Logseq, you might switch. Everyone else should stick where they are.

    • @mikhaeldito

      That's the exact reason why Tana is still in closed beta though.

    • @EffectiveCo
      @EffectiveCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely one of the better outliners out there approachability wise. Logseq is powerful but it's very technical to use deeply.

    • @Eisesser01

  • @amyciao1707

    So many videos abt this , yet it's only available for certain people. Why not just release it for people to use and find bugs along the way and report them to develops for fixing smh

    • @EffectiveCo
      @EffectiveCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think their marketing wants pent up demand. But if you wait too long it makes prospective customers mad.

  • @patho977
    @patho977 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It’s also shady that invites were given to people that generate “courses” to use Tana. You buy the course, you get an invite. So you spend money to get an invite to beta test an unfinished product.

    • @EffectiveCo
