Anytype is like a baby between Notion and Apple Notes with a hint of Obsidian. Unsurprisingly, it's one of the most exciting apps released recently. It's a note-taking/knowledge management app that you can use for managing tasks, projects, notes, contacts, recipes, books and pretty much anything you want to keep track of. That's why they call themselves "the everything app". It's like Tana in a way that you can customise a lot and build cool stuff. But it's probably not for me or anyone who can't be bothered to spend hours organising things.

Just throwing this out there as a random content idea: Been keeping an eye on both Anytype and Capacities for a while now, two really interesting (and somewhat similar) new options for when I eventually leave Notion behind. Would love to see a comparison between the two!
@@fabiank3203 great idea! I'll add that to my list 🙂
Is there canva or whitebard on Anytype?@@ShuOmi_Official
How to share my pc vaults of anytype with android app?
These apps make me realize just how game changing Notion was. So many other notes app post-Notion follow a similar (but of course still unique per app) look, feel, and usability.
is anytype real offline and we can simply share vaults like in obsidian?
I don't mind that there is too much going on as it seems like it's only there if you need it, but not in the way if you don't. As for me, I've been slowly trying to wean myself off Apple Notes to develop a more advanced PKM system, and I've tried Notion, Obsidian, LogSeq, Craft, and perhaps a few more. I wanted to like Notion but I found the UX a bit clunky and distracting, spending too much time trying to make it look good. Obsidian is a cool idea but my mind doesn't work that way, and I found dealing with markdown to create too much friction for me. I'm more of a creative type so Craft was my favorite out of the box, it's definitely close to Apple Notes in ease of use and making really nice looking notes, plus backlinks etc., however I get kind of frustrated with the limitations (no real database feature). Plus Apple Notes is going to add a backlinks feature in the next MacOS update. That said I keep thinking I wish Craft, Notion, and Apple Notes had a baby haha - and it seems like Anytype might be the answer to that, with a bit of Obsidian thrown in (not mad at the idea of local storage!). Definitely going to give this a try, thanks for the review.
Great review, Shu! Loved your honest opinion at the end about doing more work and less of setup. Aligns completely with our opinion at Twos. That sponsor was awesome as well. Congrats on your recent engagement! 🎉
I totally agree with the ending statements of this video. I’ve had anytype for awhile but I feel like I would have to invest too much time to fully learn the app to make the most use out of it. All in all great video and thanks for sharing!
Glad you agree! And thanks for your kind words :)
Anytype is in its early stages, a little bit like a toddler, but already it’s so powerful and very useful. I really like it. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future.
Looks like the graph view of Obsidian. Thanks for the video!
Great vid Shu.
I use Notion a lot, especially at work. It's been invaluable. Practical, but bulky. Now I see there are competitors so I headed down the rabbit hole.
I love the simplicity and speed of Bear but it leaves me wanting for just a few more features.
I struggled to learn AnyType for a while, and gave up. I need to get on with work.
Obsidian is just way too over the top for my liking.
Capacities was looking like a clear winner until I realised - no mobile app?!!
Craft is looking like the winner. So far.
i spent a couple hours learning anytype, and in the end it taught me some important things about how to better organize my note-clutter. so i went back into obsidian and did that instead of transferring everything over to anytype like I'd originally hoped.
now i have integrated my disparate obsidian vaults into one, with a homepage that links to dashboards for different sections.
the granular control over relations/objects/sets is ultimately tedious, and i can get similar results with dataview.
the main downside of obsidian is that you dont get that super aesthetic graph, and thats a real bummer... obsidian's graph is much less useful for visualizing informational relationships.
while obsidian isnt foss, its hard to beat plaintext files. but anytype has a seamless desktop/mobile experience, and a solid commitment to foss. I'd love to go back to anytype if they can smoothen out the time you have to spend on setup, and declutter their filesystem.
I agree - this app is challenging to learn. Your video does a good job simplifying some concepts that aren't very well explained in their documentation and videos.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you :)
I am trying Anytype quite extensively, my only complaint is that is NOT peer to peer or local first. You can not control where your data is held yet, and it all filters through Anytype to sync. I had to contact them directly to find this out as I was struggling to understand the peer to peer aspect (which is why I started testing initially). They do say that the goal is to be local and peer to peer as soon as they can be though. Other than that, its a really really nice, polished app, and the phone app is way better than obsidians
Hi! Anytype is local first because you can do everything in the app in offline mode, except sharing your spaces to others. Also your data is synced peer to peer in local network (but p2p now works only in LAN). Otherwise Anytype uses the same sync protocol with nodes.
For example you can even fully restore your account from your other local device without connecting to nodes.
LOL i just learned how to use Notion and finally getting in the groove of it and fully transitioned into it as my second brain and now i see this BEAST. LOL maybe one day ill use this, or ill use it as a notes app for something else
Loved this review Shu, thank you! Anytype looks to be a strong contender in the PKM / Productivity space, but I was wondering if you’ve used Heptabase yet? The guys over at Paperless Movement just did a review of the Beta and it looks fantastic-like a cross between Scrintal, Craft and Obsidian. Would love to know what you think. 👍
Not yet! But, I've been a supporter of Heptabase for a while now. It looks great and might do a review soon.

is it possible to have the Mac OS Finder visualized in the map feature?
This is fire. Thanks
All I've been looking for is a simple side-by-side (PDF and notes) notetaking app that would also benefit from AI capabilities to summarize, bullet point etc. (maybe using API from OpenAI and such to make it future-proof). That's all I'd need !
Have you tried Genie (www.genei.io/)? It might do exactly what you
re looking for.
Maybe Readwise and their new Reader platform?
Thanks for the video! Can you say which app you used to record the screen with mouse tracking? Looks great 🔥
It’s ScreenStudio :)
Thanks for the review! I just started trying out Anytype to prepare for notetaking in the coming semester. Just wondering if this app has a formula function like Notion? So far I like the app and the relations, but the ability to use formula functions is crucial to integrating these notes into scheduling study review
It doesn't seem to have a formula function yet. Overall Notion is much more polished and feature rich.
Can you do a video on Dex There's features that you mentioned that didn't even know it had. Really good video and it's a very good tool to use.
Hey, where is the url to Anytype? Seems missing from the description.
In a 'smart app' like this, I expect the interface to prompt me with the top 3 options rather than the user having to click the interface and then select. I expect it to be smarter and less tedious.
Is there any way to import my obsidian notes to anytype?
I tried to love this app, but there's too many weird little things like I can't decide where ot have my files locally, I can't stop the "encrypted" syncing, I can't use brackets for linking - that's totally weird to me.
does it work with PostgreSQL (e.g. CRUD)?
Thanks👍
I played around a bit with AnyType. It is nice and it definitely has a really polished UI on mobile. However, I personally prefer the simplicity and flexibility of Obsidian. I do wish there was a way to use a like AnyType interchangeably with Obsidian though. That would be cool.
AnyType is open sourced, so I can almost guarantee someone will create this feature or plugin.
is it better than Obsidian ?
Looks great--but make a quick error and there's no "undo" functionality. C'mon now!
It’s very similar to capacities
How do I sync files across iOS, android, windows and Mac ?
You just need to use the recovery phase that can be found in the settings and put them on your other devices. It should be synced after you do that process.
Як же все швидко працює!! чи це він пришвидшив, як мені здається))
I agree with you, nice app but there is too much going on. This isn’t a bad thing, just too much for me.
Ah too complicated for me. I’m using obsidian.. don’t need to switch haha
It is unclear for me if this app can sync between devices. I would like to use it in my laptop as well in my phone and work computer.
It is worth mentioning that anytype has done the best job of synchronization among all local-first note-taking apps. The data can be synchronized not only through the official online nodes or self-host nodes, but also through automatic synchronization over a LAN, and all of this does not require additional configuration.
cool app but confusing, i come from obsidian and this app seems to not even have folders after importing my whole obsidian library...
How do I connect using obsidian on my iPhone to my laptop
@@BubblesTF put your vault into icloud files
Ok... But he showed 5 platforms on the screen. Listed 4 and ignored Linux. Like wtf
Yes. It is a little much. The focus seems the app rather than the work.
networkers networking at each other with AI-generated nonsense is going to be a game-changer
AND YOU KEPT THIS A SECRET???
Oh my the cursor being in wrong place is driving it insane 😅
Why choose Anytype in 2023 vs Obsidian or Heptabase for example? I dont understand the point to dont have whiteboard/canva in 2023. Bit sad, because i like the background of anytype.
Hmmm....do you finish every review with....hey this is great, but I prefer X....jump over to that review??
Isnt it kinda weird and creepy to write down other peoples info like this xD
Also it feels kinda unnecessary ngl
Could be useful if you’re making fictional characters for stories/novels
The whole app just seems so over the top complicated for like 98% of users
Sure i guess if you really really need to organize a shitton if data? But its not even a notes app at that point..
I dont even know how i even got into the rabbithole of overly complicated note apps 💀💀
I gave this a chance, but it's too convoluted and not intuitive at all. Maybe I was expecting a Notion-like app with databases etc, but it's clearly not. Maybe in the future ...
Exactly what I thought! I think it's kind of too complicated for beginners and still lacks of necessary features.
Dex? Another company using yet another company's brand to get people to check out their product. Hope Samsung's lawyers are watching.
Capacities is better
Why do you think it is better ?
OBSIDIAN SUCKS
