I've been hearing a lot about Heptabase lately, and I wanted to figure out why. The tool has a number of features from other personal knowledge management tools compiled into one unique interface - that of a unique, highly visual PKM tool.
If you love Obsidian's Canvas feature, Heptabase might be the perfect fit for your PKM workflow.

I was gonna say how silly it is to require a subscription just to try things out (would skip it without a second thought), but I double checked, and they do have a free 7-day trial. Unless what you meant is that 7 days isn't long enough to decide whether you want to switch completely, but then it could've been phrased better.
That's good news, when I signed up last month it wasn't there!
@@EffectiveCo Fair! Glad they added it
Longtime Obsidian user here -- I'm actually in the process of migrating everything to Heptabase. It just has the right mix of features for my use case.
I actually signed up for Scrintal and Heptabase last year, almost simultaneously, because I was intrigued by the visual notetaking approach. Obsidian's Canvas had not been implemented yet. I found both to be lacking, although Scrintal had a slight development edge at the time. That's changed, dramatically. I thought that with the rollout of Canvas that I would drop both; instead, Heptabase has impressed me with increased sophistication and features, and they're just getting better.
Again, everyone's use case is different. But even though I try out a lot of apps, I don't change them very often (Keynote 1998 - 2008 / Evernote 2008 - 2016 (using Scrivener for publishing) / Standardnotes 2016 - 2020 / Obsidian 2020 - present), but note-taking is such a dynamic field at the moment that my switch frequency is accelerating. But with Heptabase I feel like I might've found a home.
For now 😉
Did you try capacities ?
I’m evaluating Heptabase as a replacement for Roam Research, which I love but which doesn’t seem to have gotten any material updates for quite a while. In contrast, I’ve been amazed at the pace of development for Heptabase. They have a document in their wiki that documents their vision and a discord where they communicate directly with their customers and give you the near term roadmap. It does have a bit of a learning curve for me because the model is different from Roam, but I’m finding that all the functionality is there, as well as a LOT more.
Great to hear your thoughts; you were spot on in how Heptabase combines the best of many apps. Note: The new mobile app is more full functionality now; it’s not just capture.
I must've missed a release - I tested it last month and that's all it was. Thanks for the update!
Excelent, thanks!
Can you make a video about DeepNotes?
Hmm. Left a comment a few days ago with links to some Heptabase information for anyone who was interested in more info. Any reason that was taken down?
I’m not sure what happened - wasn’t from my end - sorry about that though.
I'll try again. Maybe TH-cam thought it was spammy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ @@EffectiveCo
TH-cam doesn't like Links in comments is what I have experienced maybe because they want to reduce spams because every time I posted any link in any TH-cam video the comment would have been deleted . I don't know know if the creator can control that but it is my theory that TH-cam doesn't want you to post links until it's the creator it self
Interesting - I still would enjoy a more visual app, customizable for ideas.
They now have a free trial option
As a student who doesn't earn anything I need a free version 😢
7 long ample days
It doesn't have outline feature.
It has. You can use bullet points.
you look like the guy
from pitch meeting
No self-hosting option? No thanks.
Which self hosted PKM are you using?
@@Chris-cx6wl I'm still using Obsidian. It's not perfect, but it does the job.
Just tried it... ewww... it has nice things but definitely not better then others and on top of that it is paid, so I have to think what will be with my stuff if I stop paying...
Card Library is really way worse then in other tools and that should be a foundation
What other visual apps have you tried that you think may be better?
@@WarrenKirkpatrick Obsidian for start, Logseq as well. This is too generic
