I gave up on cables, got classic 32" Samsung 1080i wide flat CRT Tv in almost mint condition for 20€ with component, composit, rgb, scart, svideo inputs. All retro consoles look great on it. One of the best investments you can do for your retro consoles.
3:19 Apparently, PS1 games were showing up (and are playable) when using that adapter but probably because I was using a widescreen/flatscreen TV that supports the adapter and 240p? I have other widescreen tvs in the house and none of the others work besides that one.
Try flipping the widescreen switch over and back. I bet it works again Some tv's don't auto switch the display resolution, and the ps1 switches the output all the time when in menu or in game
@@GearsAndTech Are you talking about the PS2 to HDMI adapter? It doesn't have a switch like the other adapter you've showed after the first one, if that's what you're referring to which I don't have sadly.
I recently bought a 'Mcbazel' PS1/PS2-to-HDMI adaptor from Amazon (UK) to connect both my PS1 and PS2 consoles. It works really well as it claims to be using S-Video out from both consoles (there's no need to change the RGB/YPBR settings in the PS2 menu). The picture can be switched from 480p to 720p, and between 4:3 and 16:9 on the device. PS1 games play perfectly from any PS1 console, and even play perfectly on PS2... The picture is crisp and clear, and unlike some other adaptors I've seen/tried, the picture isn't darkened by the adaptor on PS2, plus, it allows for decent DVD playback! The best part about it is it's only £15 ($20-ish). 👍
I connect PS1 via RGB SCART to Retrotink5x and PS2 via component to Retrotink5x and use the 1080p HDMI output on my flat panel LCD TV. However, my TV is old enough to have inputs for composite, RGB SCART and component as well as a couple of HDMI ports. I've connected both the PS1 and PS2 directly to the TV and the picture is great that way too. However, no way I'd called the Retrotink5x a 'budget' option
Hi! I am very confused about this topic... What would you choose to Connect ps1 to a LCD/LED TV? RGB SCART, RCA, or one of those ps1 HDMI cables? ( I am not considering retrotink or that cheap HDMI adapter)
You're completely wrong about the PS2 To HDMI not working for PS1 games ON PS2. The issue is that the PS1 games switch outputs depending on what's being displayed, for example cutscenes or the inventory menu in Silent Hill. The device still works fine, but those resolution changes freak HDTVs out and cause a black screen or a signal loss for a few seconds, which makes something like Silent Hill impossible to play. A way around this is to use Free McBoot to force PAL or NTSC in the GSM settings.
Feel like I’ve been searching for this video for hours now!! You explained everything so well and gave outcomes of every situation. This has really helped and now I know how to sort my issue, Top man!
I have been struggling with capture cards and adapters for my PS2 for a while now. I have tried two different capture cards and two different adapters and nothing quite hit the spot. I want to use my PS2 for both PS1 and PS2 games and play them on my screen using OBS. The cheap capture card kept changing the sound pitch, lowering it. The more expensive capture card, a Razer Ripsaw X, has excellent quality and none of the pitch problems. One adapter plugs straight into the PS2 and puts out HDMI. That one worked fine for PS2 games but PS1 games started scrolling vertically and I have no idea why. The other adapter is a box that takes the composite output of the PS2's original cable and then turns it into HDMI. That one works for both PS2 and PS1 but the quality is really blurry and PS1 games look dull in color and some parts flicker. After seeing the type of adapter you showed in the video on Amazon and seeing it in action here, I am absolutely ordering it. This is my last hope, I have had enough of jumping between adapters and capture cards. Thanks for the video, hope that adapter will fix the issues.
So what is that unit like hooked up to a ps2 onto an HDTV? My TV is only 720p. Will it display ps2 and ps1 games properly on a ps2? How does it handle swapping from menu and in game inventory screens like the map in Silent Hill or your inventory in Res evil 1 and 2 and Dino Crisis??
If you grab the cable in the description it will switch between the menus and resolution with no issue Depending on your tv you may get a flicker as it changes between the different outputs

On a side note, I have used that converter and it's great, but don't use a generic power supply for your PS2 because it will cause interference in the form of horizontal bands on the screen. Took me forever to realize this was the problem. Hope that saves someone some time.

I'm currently playing Gran Turismo 1 & 2 on my old led tv which has RGB/Scart port and i'm using it for playing. And now because i'm planning to use a HDMI Adapter on my display instead of the TV which is also in my room where I got my PC, PS4 and any other things I would like to use it having good quality but also no input lag. My question is does the upscaling to 720p have a bad influence on the lag and does it also vary if I choose either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio because I could see myself playing full screen or 16:9 "maybe" but i'm also a little unsure if on 4:3 actually there would be still bigger lag than on the TV with 4:3 set on a RGB/Scart cable. I have a bit of dilemma because Kaico PS1/PS2 Adapter uses the RGB/Component switch and I think in case of at least PS1 it doesn't upscale, just clear and improve the image quality so it should not increase the lag with adding resolution. Would the Rad2x compare well with the M-Classic? Similar price, no? Only problem with the Rad2x is extra costs as it looks like it needs a Mini HDMI cable.
OOhhhhhh so even tho I have PS2 slim version, my monitor is not working, saying "no signal detected" so maybe I still need this bigger connector to make my monitor like the input. Thank you for help, I was at loss on why is it not working
Very good content, we need more people to share these experiences, it is much appreciated. Now I can ask you if you can do these tests on the PlayStation 3 since it has the same plugs to connect audio and video. Emulation is great and makes everything more excesible. I like having the correct form factor. For me it's about opening that lid and putting the game in. Then hearing it spin up and have the correct controller in my hand.
I feel like this video is like 10 years behind, there has been so many advances in retro gaming to HDMI solutions that I wouldn’t even recommend anything in this video.
at least this video doesn't exclusively recommend items that cost $200, there's already enough of those videos out there but i just want something cheap
oh nice multiple devices that did not work for my playing ps1 games on my ps2, or just using my ps2 in generall. All devices of this kind I tried, and I tried many, broke after 10 minutes and just destroyed the picture quality. And I had it on the fat and the slim one!.
based on cost of all the HDMI mods doing 2 consoles equal cost of a retrotink and more user friendly. I got peed off at cost of all these cables so i decided to do my own mod... i will paste a previous post.. (So i have created SCART adapters for SNES (NTSC), PS1, PS2, and Dreamcast so far, you will just need a good quality HDMI cable to sit in the middle (Spend as much as you want for the HDMI quality) Just because it may be expensive doesn't mean that it is good. I will release the files once all tested. Adapters are not to be sold commercially without permission.@@GearsAndTech
@GearsAndTech maybe i not translate well what a wanted to say from the spanish, i mean the rest of the people usually play on tv so the test should be on that to be a recomendación to mayority of retro gamers
Oh HELL no... Kaico Adapter is NOT the way to go! It produces a soft video output as it doesn't know how to "Process" the signal it receives from either Console correctly. The Pound PS2 HDMI Cable is the same junk as this! They use Cheap RGB to HDMI converter boards in them! Just use good quality RGB Scart Cables and an OSSC.... That is the best way if you don't want to buy and install a PS1Digital (or equivalent Device).....
My Xstation PS1 with Memcardpro is on a CRT (and looks amazing,) but that TV will probably die, at some point. I think I will need to add HDMI to my PS1, eventually. Currently, I am on disc 2 of FF7.

Great test thank you ! It reminds me to keep my SCART TV in a safe place ! I do not understand why adapters need an extra 5v power supply. The video out of the PS1 have a 5v output, HDMI 2.1b support also 5v pin (dont know if the monitor would be able to supply power to the adapter).
Very true. I think it's a current draw thing. They don't want to overload the 5v bus
Future video about M-Classic but none for Retrotink ?
Retrotink is just so much out of reach for the casual collector.
Plus, no hdmi support.
Would the Rad2x compare well with the M-Classic? Similar price, no? Only problem with the Rad2x is extra costs as it looks like it needs a Mini HDMI cable.
Nothing worked on my ps2 slim. If anyone here got that working on your new tv let me know what product you use.
Make sure the settings in ps2 are correct.
OOhhhhhh so even tho I have PS2 slim version, my monitor is not working, saying "no signal detected" so maybe I still need this bigger connector to make my monitor like the input. Thank you for help, I was at loss on why is it not working
Let me know if it works
Very good content, we need more people to share these experiences, it is much appreciated. Now I can ask you if you can do these tests on the PlayStation 3 since it has the same plugs to connect audio and video. I'll tell you that a lightning bolt struck me and killed the HDMI on the PlayStation 3 and only the other plug works. If you could, you would be a savior and an angel on earth. Greetings from Argentina.
Sorry to hear about the lightning bolt. I would guess it'll work fine on ps3 as well
If my flatscreen has an AV port does it matter if i connect my playstation to HDMI or should i just use the AV port?
A port will be low quality, but it'll work
@@GearsAndTech good to know, thanks 👍
try component and play some games in 480p
I used the Hyperkin cable, works on both consoles and has great quality
Yes. Agreed
Help me plz i need something to make my ps2 looks better on my c1 tv ! I don't care about anything else but the graphics
with this HD cable, can i play PS1 games on PS2 in HDMI?
it should work, yes
@@GearsAndTech can you try? please?
Hi, just subbed. I was looking for reviews on this topic. Just got a ps2 today from a contest. Now i need a cable. I think levelhike should work fine. Thanks for the info. 🎉
Glad I could help
Thx for this video bro!) Благодарю!
No problem
On a side note, to connect a N64 to your digital tv, you need a VHS recorder/player and also a RGB lead from a Gamecube.. Voila!
That does work, but the cable I show in a different video skips the vcr and goes from n64 right into hdmi of tv
Retrotink 4k scart or/and component
Not exactly cheap though
Great video! , just got my hands on a ps2 adapter and was thinking about getting one for my ps1 :D. Cheers!
Glad I could help!
This is good idea but for folks with pc I would just get ps2 ps1 emulator and control all the settings and play every game in any resolution and aspect ratio all power by ur PC!!! Even play 8 bit games and older and also u cn mod and use cheats on games so much more u cn do with all these old games
Emulation is great and makes everything more excesible. I like having the correct form factor. For me it's about opening that lid and putting the game in. Then hearing it spin up and have the correct controller in my hand.
emulation can have issues..@@GearsAndTech
I just wanted to know how to hook it up. To much info for my brain.
No worries
Wow! The Level Hike PSone to HDMI converter works great! I immediately bought one after watching your video. Thanks so much! 😊
Great to hear!
@@GearsAndTech me pueden compartir el link para comprarlo
I feel like this video is like 10 years behind, there has been so many advances in retro gaming to HDMI solutions that I wouldn’t even recommend anything in this video.
There are better products, but most are not an easy plug and play solution
at least this video doesn't exclusively recommend items that cost $200, there's already enough of those videos out there but i just want something cheap
Like what?
@@iris089 the retrotinks, ps1digital/pixelfx retrogem, morph in a few months and even an ossc.
Could give examples
Any eu solutions?
I don't have one of them so hard to make a recomendation. Sorry
oh nice multiple devices that did not work for my playing ps1 games on my ps2, or just using my ps2 in generall. All devices of this kind I tried, and I tried many, broke after 10 minutes and just destroyed the picture quality. And I had it on the fat and the slim one!.
This one worked good for me
get the Retrotink 5X pro, it will be all you need for all!!
If money was no object then for sure
based on cost of all the HDMI mods doing 2 consoles equal cost of a retrotink and more user friendly.
So the problem is your monitor, but usually you play consoles on a tv so what about that
I usually play on my 120" projector
@GearsAndTech maybe i not translate well what a wanted to say from the spanish, i mean the rest of the people usually play on tv so the test should be on that to be a recomendación to mayority of retro gamers
DON'T FORGET ABOUT RFU‼️😆😂✊
No adapter will give true hd
Get a convert box
Those work too
The rad2x is a great option.
I've been meaning to try it out
Oh HELL no...
Great feedback.
If your best solution involves a mClassic, it sucks.
I agree
Man, you live in medieval times? These are all laggy cheap worthless cables. Best for ps1 is budget rad2x or ossc and best retro gem or retrotink 5x
Need an hdmi solution though
too much bla bla bla...
Sorry man, I like to share more details than you wanted
@@GearsAndTech anyway good video
My Xstation PS1 with Memcardpro is on a CRT (and looks amazing,) but that TV will probably die, at some point. I think I will need to add HDMI to my PS1, eventually. Currently, I am on disc 2 of FF7.
I made it to disk 2 then got lost driving around in a submarine trying to figure out what to do next
I got a cable that converts it to hdmi on my 60 inch tv but the games look so bad it’s blurry
The cable likely is using the composite signal to switch to hdmi.
You need a different cable and it will be more clear
@@GearsAndTech so I need composite cables wires the ones with wee golden cords on them ? Thnkz for info
The majority of people are playing on the tv not a monitor .
Yes that's true. The method shown works for tv as well
