I've tried to explain while filming but if I said something wrong, I would have to redo, not only the video but also the part I was working on. Not efficient. Your comment about your, the viewers, wish for sharing pictures of your accomplishments is actually interesting. Maybe I can set something up on my website (kitchensbyrannes.com) as it could be fun to see what everyone has created 😊 .....on second thoughts, maybe posting pictures on my Facebook page makes more sense 🤔 Something to think about.
Thank you for your video! I have a pax cabinet that is 1/2" too wide for the space I wanted in. Instead of returning it, I can modify it and make it fit! Thanks again!
Thanks 🙏 Well....33" in width requires something special for sure. I would not cut and paint the doors, but only because I don't have the knowledge and skills to get away with it. Another option is to order those doors from Swedish Door, Kitch, All Styles or one of the other companies who do doors to match. The cheapest option would be to replace your 33" cabinet with a 15" and an 18". That'll be 33" in total, right? ☺️ Or cut the cabinet to 33" and put a 15" and an 18" door on it.
I hope you can do a video of reducing the 15 inch deep ikea cabinets to 12 inch deep, my current kitchen can only handle 12 inch depth due to existing window
Yup....we don't do that. I do NOT cut doors. I only cut cabinets to a size where Ikea has a front that fits. As this one th-cam.com/video/F11KZTselUo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qyydyklZimjwZhPS
Hello and thank you for an excellent video. I am thinking about shortening a cabinet from the BESTÅ series and use as a dresser. How would you go about to cut the front of the cabinets? Thank you.
I have a wall that is 60 inches long but the last 4 inches of the wall is angled in the back. Is it possible to cut out the back corner of the cabinet and the accompanying shelves or do I just need to settle for a shorter cabinet that doesn’t extend into the angled part of the wall? Thank you!
I would say; it depends. If it's a base cabinet that's standing on four legs, I wouldn't be worried but if it's a wall cabinet, you might not be able to have two brackets at the rail, making it more difficult. If it's a base cabinet, you should get some more of the 1/8" (3 mm) white board to compensate for what you cut off.
@@kitchensbyrannes Thank you for the response! So I would just move the leg over and reposition it to right before the cut and cover the newly cut angled back with new 1/8" backboard? You mentioned the wall cabinet. Is it possible to reposition the wall bracket?
Yes, if you cut off the four small pegs on the leg, you can put it where you find is a good spot. Wall cabinet and bracket. I wouldn't move the bracket as it compromise the sturdiness of the cabinet but don't let me stop you 🤣
Great tutorial, in my case tomorrow I have to modify the cabinet that will go above my tall refrigerator. It’s a 36” wide by 20” tall. Will have to make it a 36 x 18. I guess the door will cause me some problems. Any tips? Thanks
Hi Ronnie, My tip would be to think twice. 18 inches in the height doesn't sound like something where you can find a front that'll fit. I never cut a door to fit. I always make it work with what's available. Which front do you have? I can only see it happen with a painted front such as Veddinge.
I would like to install 40" upper cabinets and alter a 12" cabinet to two 5" cabinets. As far as I can see they only make 30" drawers. Any ideas what I could use for a door? Oh and an idea for another video, how about a toe kick drawer?
Thank you for your questions. It's difficult to find a front which be useful for that. Ikea has nothing with those measurements. My only suggestion would be to order what you need from one of those "we sell doors for Ikea cabinets" businesses. There's a few around. I'm not making a video on a drawer in the toekick anytime soon, as Ikea doesn't sell such a thing. Sorry. 😮
Hi, I'd like to do this same method to change a 12" width base cabinet down to 5". Since it has metal strips to hold the counter top, I would need to cut these too. Is there any concern about securing quartz counter top to a 5" base cabinet?
You can, but it serves no purpose if the cabinet has drawers since you might as well purchase a smaller cabinet and drawers in the desired width. Whenever I reduce the width of a cabinet, it's to get a 5" or 10" cabinet and put a door on it.
Handle....? If you mean how I cut the door, the answer is: I don't. I only modify the cabinets to a size where Ikea has a drawer front which can be used as a door i.e. 5x30" & 10x30".
Hmm.....🤔 If you have a hacksaw I'm sure you can modify the reinforced rail, or cut a strip of wood (3-4" high) and mount it in vertical position at the front and back. But....doors? The only way to have two doors on a 33" wide cabinet is a 18"+15" unless, of course, you use non-Ikea doors.
Dear Rannes! Thanks for your videos, they quite educational! I want to do the opposite, extend the width of a wall cabinet to fit a wide (68cm) fridge + freezer. I was thinking that I'd buy the regular tall cabinet and combine its vertical parts with the horizontal parts of an 80cm wide base cabinet where I can cut down the width to about 70cm. The front panels will be made to order anyway so I can order the appropriate size. What 80cm base cabinet would you recommend for this? And is there anything specific you think I should look out for? Thanks! Mihaly
Thank you for your question. I'm not certain I fully understand. You mention wall cabinet and base cabinets too. Which is it? And why extend? Can not not take a wider cabinet and reduce the width? I'm confused 🤔 And to add to my confusion, I'm not certain which widths are available in Europe.
@@kitchensbyrannes Dear Rannes! Yeah I see your point, I'll try to clear it up a bit. The correct term for the fridge cabinet is High Cabinet (60x240cm / 24"x 95" is the widest available option). Our fridge however is wider than that (70 cm / 27.5" ). So the idea was to buy said High Cabinet, and buy a donor Base Cabinet (80 cm / 31") to get the neccesary width (with cutting it down a bit). Would those donor parts work, and be strong enough? Or do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Sorry for taking so long. It could work but the back will be too narrow. You may combine the various back panels to patch up something strong, as the back panel, flimsy as it is, will make the cabinet rigid.
Thank you for your question. There's always a way to make the cabinet box bigger but since you most likely cannot get the hardware or a wider front, it's a bit pointless I think. ☺️ It will leave you with an open cabinet box.
@@anjajonsson8152 Sure, if you want to. I just don't offer that service so I have no VALUABLE experience to share 😊 Another option is to have a door made by one of the "we make doors for Ikea cabinets" companies.
