Great job! I am at the same point with frameless cabinets that go to within about 1/2" from the ceiling. I'm going to leave a reveal like you mentioned. I'm really glad I saw your video, good job!
As a professional carpenter, don't EVER ask if someone wants a reveal. Just do it! The flush mount will always have a noticeable seam unless both pieces have dead square edges and caulk will make it worse. The reveal will always look nicer and will hide settlement of the structure much better.
There should be a three inch apron on top, Similar to bottom floor Cabinets kick plate/apron, like that yo can dress it up with a nice molding, for a nice looking professional job.
Pro Tip from my 40+ years experience general contractor brother: Spritz that caulking bead with a NON-AMMONIA-based window spray cleaner. Then run your finger along the bead to give it a professional finish. Does a much better and less messy job than a damp rag. No need to even wipe up the excess spray cleaner as it will simply evaporate with no residue. Great video!
Flush just creates an ugly seam. We try and avoid seams if possible. If your installing new cabinets, Cut and install the molding first, then install the cabinet tight to the ceiling. Shoot your nails in from the top. Make sure they are not too long, or you will blow out the inside of the cabinet and have nails sticking out. This is still considered crown though. Flat crown
I am also finishing up an Ikea cabinet install with the 40 inch uppers which are leaving a gap at the top. I was going to take their contoured deco trim piece and cut it down but I am not sure that is going to work. My ceiling is pretty uneven from filling in an old soffit. I have a ton of scribing to do but this might help me in a few areas. It at least gives me something to think about. Having the piece wider than you would think you need so you can nail it through the top is kind of an obvious 'duh' moment for myself. We have the bodbyn gray so I would have to do some paint matching. Luckily, I found some caulk you can custom color with paint so I can get all those little fiddly bits filled in.
as i always learned not all walls or ceilings are straight 😁 this is a good idea im remodeling our kitchen in next 2 weeks and our 42 in cabinets will be all the way up the ceiling BUT.. i'd rather leave an inch to fill so cabinets wont have problems opening so filling that gap will be helpful. and the back gap can be filled with scribe molding.
Thx for this except what do you do for uneven ceilings like most are. Where you have a 1/4 gap on one end of a 10ft row of cabinets and that opens to an inch gap at the other end of the cabinets
I like the flush look. I would of just gotten some matching panels to use as the trim. Ikea has some cheap returned panels in their discount area that would work.
I liked your idea best. Looked nice seeing a bit of reveal coming forward. Flush looked like you messed up hanging cabinet and used extra wood to cover mistake.
Hi Bret! It’s totally up to you and how big of a gap. This one I have is about 1/4” which dap will work, but for bigger gaps you might want to fill it in like the top with a thin piece 🙏🏽😊👍🏽. Some would add quarter round or shoe, but that’s a preferred taste.
So if I have a smaller gap ( 0.5”) on one line of cabinets versus 1.5 “ on the other side of cabinets. How can I make it look less nice ? My cabinet guy said there is nothing he can do and now I’m very disappointed. He had told me there would be a mall gap but it looks unfinished. The rest of the kitchen looks beautiful but just the uneven gaps are really bothersome.
People ...the ceiling is not level so the reveal is not level. He had to find a way to fill in something. So what if he moved the cabinet up. The cabinet needed to be level, thus no matter what there would have been a gap. Once the area is filled, lived in and accessorized, his solution will hardly be noticed. When I had this problem in an home reno to make three apts thus needing three kitchenettes, these cupboards where not only simple, but the perfect tenant cupboard easy to replace. We hung up four wall shelves in each kitchen using the thick colored acrylic shelving which we had cut at a glass store and angle brackets. Then took the same colored thick plastic see thru material-acylic Green or Blue or Yellow (each kitchen had its own color)... and that was what we inserted into the gap, essentially matching the blinds to the acryllic shelves to the acryllic gap material and the handles on the drawers all coincided. So you can always decorate this away. but the acryllic comes in a array of colors and is very nifty looks like colored glass easy to attach no need to glue corners. We caulked the top! used a pry bar to get it flush with the cabinet and caulked the ceiling seam. Came out very clean.
Nah. the cabinets could have simply been mounted as close as possible to the ceiling. It's half an inch, no one cares about cabinets being a half inch higher. Then use either caulk or lattice strips to hide any gaps.
Just because that’s how it’s supposed to be done, doesn’t mean whoever installed it did it properly lol. Have the same issue in a house I just bought. Super annoying.
What is “baccarat”? Not sure I’m spelling it correctly…it was the rope product shown after the Dap Extreme Stretch …thanks UPDATE : he’s saying ‘Backer Rod’ lol, which I found in notes lol
That works too Alvin! I’m just showing it for educational and instructional purposes, i like to show different scenarios on this channel, some of the viewers may have just bought a house with cabinets with this type of situations 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
When you're mounting cabinets, you want them level. Floors, walls and ceilings are never perfectly square and level. So, you need to leave space above the cabinet for adjustment. Consider that a run of cabinets is usually made up of 3-10 cabinets, that can be anywhere between 3 and 20 feet. Also consider that these are Ikea style flat top cabinets. That means the entire roof of the cabinet needs to sit on the ceiling as opposed to conventional plywood cabinets where only 3/4" is touching the ceiling.
@@chrisford8403 also you don't want to mount your cabinets much higher than 18" over the counters. If he has a unusual ceiling height, there might not be a cabinet height that perfectly hits the ceiling.
Actually, no. This was the much easier option. He only showed the 1 cabinet. Kitchens usually get entire walls full of cabinets. Plus, what are the chances of the ceiling and wall being square along the entire run of cabinets.
And I thought this video was going to teach how to scribe a filler/molding to the actual contour of the ceiling, instead of beating in whatever fits. Oh well.
I think this whole kitchen was done wrong. Those cabinets needed to be installed lowered and add the crown molding, the the can light next to the cabinet a no,no
If you move the cabinets up and the ceiling isn't flat the doors could rub on the ceiling when you open them. Plus, some cabinets are hung on rails so it's impossible to get them tight to the ceiling.
Great job! I am at the same point with frameless cabinets that go to within about 1/2" from the ceiling. I'm going to leave a reveal like you mentioned. I'm really glad I saw your video, good job!

I was just going to say the same! I thought I would see if someone else had already pointed this out. 😀

I prefer the overhang also, much more luxury looking
Thanks!
I have about 1 inch gap, love what you did. I was wondering how I was going to do this! good job well done.
I like a reveal. Puts character in the look.

nice - I prefer the reveal, but I understand why you had to go flush :)

Our kitchen had the same issue, and we went with the reveal route. It turned out great! (And I'm the wife/boss, lol)
This is great, I have the same problem with my kitchen cabinets. Thanks for the helpful tips as always.
I’m glad I could be of help! Thank you Kathleen! 🙏🏽😊

Love the reveal much better!
Your Wife was Right , it Looks So much better. 😊👌✌🖖🖖🖖
Thank you so much! My wife will be happy about your comment! 🙏🏽😊
The wife was wrong. To complex to make everything flush. I find it funny when guys bow to the wishes of the wife - even when they are the expert.
What about that gap between the back of the cabinet and the wall. How would you cover that?
Wife 🥇 won 🥇! Wife is boss🎉
Great video, thanks for posting.

I like the reveal good 1/2 in out
Nice job 👍
Thank you! 🙏🏽😊
i think the over hang set the cabnit off and makes it look factory made
I agree! 🙏🏽😊
Using the reveal is more practical and better looking. You don’t have to use caulk between the cabinet and trim.
Thank you for the feedback Lisa! 👍🏽😊
Поздрав из Црне Горе. Педантно и уредно! Браво!
I like the reveal option better too.
You just solved my problem.
Invest in a stand for your mitre saw. Better cuts and better knees!

What about the gap behind the cabinet on the wall? Just Dap it?

Industry standard is 3/4" scribe molding.
I would joint compound the gap against the wall and fan it out , the paint..but you would need the matching paint 🤷♂️
Instead of a reveal, insert it flush like you did, but attach a thin quarter round and do the same where the cabinet meets the wall.
Nice job, thanks for sharing
Great informative video thanks
This was so helpful
Very nice work
Classy!!! Love it.

Well done...
I think they were build a tad too high haha but you did a great job with it
Your supposed to build the top frame first, attach it to the ceiling then install the cabinet pushed up against it
Doesn't work with IKEA rail hanging system. Work with traditional US cabinets though.
Just because that’s how it’s supposed to be done, doesn’t mean whoever installed it did it properly lol. Have the same issue in a house I just bought. Super annoying.
how to attach cupboard to ceiling in the middle of the room?
If there is a small space a person could put some lights above the cabinets... like rope lights.
You were right by letting it extend a bit. Do that makes it look intentional, trying to make it look flush, looks like a mistake.
What is “baccarat”? Not sure I’m spelling it correctly…it was the rope product shown after the Dap Extreme Stretch …thanks
UPDATE : he’s saying ‘Backer Rod’ lol, which I found in notes lol
like the reveal
I preferred the look of the reveal.
The bosss🤣😂😂😂😂
Why cant u just mount ur cab an inch higher? Or mount it lower, add a nice trim piece and fill the gap
That works too Alvin! I’m just showing it for educational and instructional purposes, i like to show different scenarios on this channel, some of the viewers may have just bought a house with cabinets with this type of situations 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
@@FixThisHouse so glad you do too, because there’s soooo many situations where information like this is needed!!
Reveal 100%. Flush looks cheap/after thought
I agree! But it wasn’t my call 😅
I like the reveal better
Yes, I get brother…wife wins😂
😂 🙌🏽
WOW 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯
Thank you!
Nice
Reveal looks far better...even a deeper one would look great, like intentional trim. Flush looks like what it is...a filler or patch.
Reveal option looks more professional than flush. The the flush option, the seam is shown looks very ugly, no matter how good the cauking job is.
If the ceiling is flat, you should have been able to mount the cabinets high enough that no gap was visible with the doors closed.

I prefer the reveal. It looks like it was done on purpose. The flush looks like it was to cover a mistake or poor workmanship.
Thank you for the feedback! 🙏🏽😊
I would go with a moulding. But that's me.
Instead of 18mm of you use 15mm mdf of mfc you will not need hammering my opinion and some any way still good job
You were right about the reveal. Don't tell your wife though.
😂 🙏🏽😊
Would it have not been smarter to just move the cabinet up 1/2"? Not to mention a hell of a lot easier and a lot less work.
Actually, no. This was the much easier option. He only showed the 1 cabinet. Kitchens usually get entire walls full of cabinets. Plus, what are the chances of the ceiling and wall being square along the entire run of cabinets.
Or just shove some kitchen paper and fill the rest with some mud, paint over it and it looks like wall. Sometimes people are just....

It appears you installed the cabinets too high and filling the gap simply doesn’t look good 👎
👍👍🌹🌹
your wife was wrong the reveal looked better
If you get stuck having to do this after having done a refurbishment, you should put tools down for life. A little forward planning will do miracles
What if it was always the plan?
@@dighawaii1 then you would have raised the cabinet to be flush with the ceiling plus your ceiling will be dead flat
@@danchev338 not if the plan was to leave a gap.
Now fill the gap on the wall.
🫡
Sorry Bro, you should have not given your wife the choice. She would have loved the reveal.
Hack
The ceiling is not flat how I don’t think its safe
You don't need to fix the Gap, the Gap isn't broken.
Dosent look good at all. Move the cabinet up, that’s a Mickey Mouse job. 🤦🏿♂️
This video is meant for those who have this situation, but I do Agree with your solution 👍🏽😊
If you move the cabinets up and the ceiling isn't flat the doors could rub on the ceiling when you open them. Plus, some cabinets are hung on rails so it's impossible to get them tight to the ceiling.
Still looks cheap
