  • Unfortunately only 4 out of 137 runs are captured. Remaining lost either due to cameraman’s carelessness or film editor’s stupidity. Treat this like a visit to an archeological remains!
I compiled this in reverence to our beloved Vishy.
Music Is from Aradhana which was released during the same year.

It is a shame and a point of deep disgust/disappointment that there is not a single stand in any of the stadia in India named after him, when lesser mortals have got that honor. Indeed, the KSCA should reflect on the injustice done to this genial touch artist and promptly name one of the stands of Chinnaswamy Stadium after him. I am also surprised at the apathy shown by fans/admirers of Vishy in his own State for not being able to make this happen for so long. It is a also a sad reflection on the lack of such affirmative action from other stadia in Calcutta, Chennai and Kanpur where Vishy played memorable knocks and entertained the crowds.

Vishwanath was selfless. Never cared for his career. He was too good an Indian who never sought fame, allowed everyone around to grow their career like Gavaskar, and Tendulkar. He doesn't hail from Mumbai. That's the other reason maybe.

When I was a teen ager, I had an opportunity to watch a Ramji trophy match between Andhra and Karnataka in 1975, at Visakhapatnam. The Karnataka team was too strong with Vishwanath, Brijesh Patel, Sudhakar Rao, Roger Binny and Kitani for making a strong batting line up and Prasanna and Chandrasekhar two internationally famous spinners marking a strong bowling side. Not surprisingly, Karnataka team won the match quite comfortably in spite of a decent first innings batting performance by the Andhra team. What impressed me the most was Viswanath's brilliant batting and Chandra's fantastic bowling particularly in the Andhra's second innings. Vishy and Chandra served both Karnataka and India with distinction. Hats off!

Andhra was very unlucky to face the wrath of Vishys blade on his debut. He was a very thin then ,came in and hammered the team with a classical 256 not out. This pitch forked him in to national recognition.

Gundappa Vishwanath is my all time favorite Cricketer. One of the finest human beings. I watched your latest episode. Loved the tippani again. Loved the song selection also.
I lived half a kilometer from GV's house in JP Nagar. I used to see him water his plants every day in the evening, when I was returning from my college every day.
Those were days - it was a belief those days that India would never lose a match if Gundappa Vishwanath hits a century. It turned out to be true until his last century - I think. I have to do a fact check, though.

In cricket, a unique genius is called by many names.
Vishwanath, GRV, Wristy Vishy or just Vishy.
If you doubt, numbers don't show the amount of talent ,think GRV.
Whenever each and every batsman in the squad would scores lots of runs, which happened mostly on batting beauties Vishy wouldn't be interested to bat.Atleast I believed so. And when the conditions would suit bowling , bowlers on top and India, back to wall ,that was the tume to enjoy watching Vishy bat. Then only GRV would bat India out of trouble. With tail for company & without being beaten even once, forget getting a life or slice of luck.
Hindi commentators would call him sankatmochan.
On lively wickets GRV wouldn't need any time to settle or get the eye in.
Little bit of gardening would be followed with touching the top of pads, rim of the cap along with continuous tapping of bat between feet. What followed after those mannerisms was sheer C L A S S.
Spin or Pace, full or short, Yorker or bouncer, in Australia or England , nothing really mattered.
The only Guy to top averages without scoring a 100 and play a series defining role. In Tests. In Australia.
Vishy meant Cuts and drives through mid on, covers and straight behind the bowler or point & midwicket. Same Vishy was all about delicate glances, late cuts actually snatched from the gloves of keeper, and those very very wristy flicks bisecting the 2 fielders at leg trap. Wide reportoire of shots ,against any type of bowling, on any surface. Elegance and timing. If Gavaskar was grammar of batting then Wristy Vishy was its poetry and music.
Well , GRV always showed his true colours when India was down and out. He would then change the course of the match with company of tailenders.
That's what his numbers don't capture. But then who cares for stats ,having seen the Art of Batting live !

How aptly described Sunil - the typical mannerisms before he took strike to each ball, I wonder if Jai can bring to us any clip of Vishy walking out to bat, the rapturous crowd in the background welcoming him, very rarely did batsman of those times get this accolade from the public.

@@mahadevanrangarajan5031 Indeed the crowd welcomed GRV on every outing.Jai has done a wonderful job, more because not.much of Vishy's exploits are on you tube.
Besides those 2 sixers I hope you remember his knock at Eden garden.
The 6'7" Tony Greg would be at silly point and Dennis Ammis at short cover. All this first to curb his instinct to play that slap of a cut and then if possible to create a chance. Vishy off course would bisect the two. Repeatedly. Without even bothering to start for a run. Commentators would say , Greg can count the lace holes on his shoes , yet 4 the moment it left the bat.His confidence in not even bothering to run said it all.
Picture of Opponent Greg lifting Vishy was in my collection for a long time and will remain in my memory forever. Just like his little hop backwards to get right on the top of that short delivery to flick it through the onside. Style and elegance

1969 i was in my second-year master s degree at Trichi Jamal Mohamed college, even today i remember the day, how some of us students stood in front of the tea stall glued to the radio listening to the commentary we could not attend classes on that day as we were not willing to leave the tea stall even after G R s century The Best thing. was the next day our professors Mr Noor Mohamed and Mr Abdul Samad very sportively excused us.

What a commentary! The caption came for Vishwanath and the video comes for the match without focus to the man for whom the video came, nor even that he returned with a duck in the first innings.

Ashok Mankad a fine player who unfortunately could not make it big unlike Sunny.Probably played too many strokes. Was given a long run though. Amber Roy and Guha the Bengal boys were never a given a long run sadly.
