    Gundappa Vishwanath without a helment, front face guard, arm guard has all the class of helicopter shots, pulls, cover drives, cuts, square cuts, drop shots...everything possible in one style called GUNDAPPA VISHWANATH - A LEGEND !!!

    It’s our zamana ❤
    We listened to the radio running commentaries since Vishwanath made his debut in Kanpur against Australia and made 137 runs in the second innings. Ashok Mankad, Amarnath brothers, E D Solkar, etc made their debuts during those days under MAK Pataudi. Then came Sunil Gavaskar …..
    Now I am 70. Gone are the days, the golden era of Indian Cricket. Now everything is like instant coffee. Commercialisation of everything in cricket.

    Gundappa was a total package, gifted with style, grit & determination, perfection. His batting stance says it all. Today we see highly distorted & crude version of stance, stroke play lacking in class, perfection.

      My favourite from SL is Roy Dias( I hope the spelling is correct), class batsman and I can never forget his batting at Chepauk on the first test of SL. Dileep Mendis is closer to Vishwanath but a powerful hitter.🙏

    My all time favourite cricketer. One of India"s best ever batsman, Vishy in his prime was equal to any top batsman worldwide. India never lost test match in which he scored a century!

    During my college days in early 70s, my professor RGD Charles used to describe Vishy as 'poetry in motion' and Gavaskar as 'prose in motion'. GRV was one of the most elegant batsman of the 70s and 80s

    I was fortunate to watch Vishy's game on the ground many times. Unforgettable ones. The most prominent is his 97 not out in 1975 against the menacing onslaught by Andy Roberts (7wickets) and co at Chennai, the then Madras.
    Three bouncers per over at 90+ miles ( 144+ KM), no helmet, no forearm guards, no other pads, falling wickets on the other end regularly..... Nothing seems to have disturbed him. Unfortunat that well deserved Century was deprived for want of runner there.
    In many occasions saw him walking without waiting for umpire's signal once he is sure that he is out. Gentlemen sportsmanship.

    While my admiration for Gavaskar is immense, I must express that Gundappa Vishwanath, often overshadowed by Gavaskar, emerges in my view as one of the finest Test batsmen India ever produced, surpassing even Gavaskar in style when the formidable West Indian pace attack is excluded. The elegance with which Vishwanath approached his batting is truly exceptional..!!

    No helmet nor pads all over the body, he was playing against great bowlers from away hostile conditions. Most of his knock was to save from losing. Excellent strike rate. Delight to see him bat was a treat to watch. If he had the discipline of Gavaskar would have played lot more years and broken many more records. Very humble and great sportsman and selfless never played for records. Sachin, Dravid had some shades of our Great GR Vishwanath technical genius skills. For example some of GR drives was there with Sachin, playing the ball very late is something Dravid has it like GR. Sunny Gavaskar in his own words "Vishny comfortably dispatches unplayable ball to boundary while he was defending which most others would have got out"

    • @rgudduu
      @rgudduu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      'Vishwanath did not have the discipline of Gavaskar'. Elaborate pz.
      He seems bit fat in this video.

    • @epicdestinationvacations1535
      @epicdestinationvacations1535 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Our Great GR Vishwanath was not disciplined in taking care of physical fitness or healthy living this is what costed him to lose his reflex. Otherwise, our favorite extremely talented and gifted batsmen would have played many more years and have massed many runs and records (which he never played for though). Anecdote Gavaskar was not looking at flash photography day before the match as it would have impacted his concentration for the game! also Gavaskar was controlled and measured in his eating, drinking habits.

  • @suniltambe861

    Cuts, glances, drives ....
    Vishwanath, walks down the wicket, does little bit of gardening. Comes back to the crease. Taps the top of his left pad , then the right and then the tip of his cap and takes the stance......
    Who can forget those flicks?
    As the commentators said bisecting the forward and backward shortleg.
    Short highted Vishy would jump on the back foot to get right on the top of shortpitched , rising deliveries
    No one else will bat like wristy Vishy.

    GRV was an institution of class. His immaculate squarecuts were treat to watch. One of the most stylish batsmen to have played for india he often produced wonderful batting displays when needed. The 114 @ Melbourne in 1981 on a landmine of a wicket and the 97 at chepauk against rhe West Indies were all class. Even the innings of 112 when india chased down 404 @ port of Spain in 1976 was another distinguished knock.

    • @somsharma3948
      @somsharma3948 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Vishy scored 112 and not 85 in that record chase of 406. M Amarnath scored 85 and Gavaskar 102. Brijesh Patel finished the game with a scintillating 49. This is another example of India winning whenever vishy scored 100s.

    One of the greats of Indian cricket.The more you see him the more you want to see.Very stylish ,GoD gifted him with all the strokes.On a day in which Andy Roberts was at his fearsome best and the ball bouncing on a Calcutta,he belted the West Indians,including Andy to all parts of the ground.India shot out for 197.Vishy made a stylish 97.He left only 3 balls to the wicket keeper.Such was his class.I advise all viewers to take a look at his knock

    As I can remember listening to All-India Radio's running commentaries during test matches in 70s and 80s. Dr. Narottam Puri used to praise Vishwanath's batting as heroic one. When test batsmen would fail to score sufficient runs, it was Vishwanath who would came to the rescue of the Indian team through his timely contribution of runs, sometimes leading to century. He performed well during West Indies tour when faced against best fast bowlers in the world.

    Funny but INteresting trivia
    Dilip Vengsarkar is the son-in-law of Gundappa Vishwanath. Vengsarkar married Vishwanath's daughter, Vanitha, in 1986.
    Interestingly, Vengsarkar and Vishwanath also played together for India for many years. They were both part of the Indian team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Vengsarkar was a right-handed opening batsman, while Vishwanath was a right-handed middle-order batsman. They were both very successful batsmen, and they played a key role in India's success in the 1980s.
    Vengsarkar retired from international cricket in 1992, while Vishwanath retired in 1985. They both had very successful careers, and they are both considered to be among the greatest Indian cricketers of all time.
    It is a very rare and unique thing for a father-in-law and son-in-law to both play cricket for the same country at the highest level. It is a testament to the talent and skill of both Vengsarkar and Vishwanath that they were both able to achieve such great success.

      He used to play another shot which siddhu described so well after he played against Vishy in a Ranji trophy match during vishys twilight years. He would make eye contact with the bowler, smile and when you expfected an off drive or a cover drive he wud deflect a late cut to third man for four while looking at the bowler. When Vishy was batting most opposing teams wud realize it’s futile to not keep a third man.

    He would have been better BATSMAN if he played for himself first and had confidence of Gavaskar even when failed. His biggest failure was being 12th Man after announcing retirement from cricket loosing to Pakistan when entire INDIAN batsman didn't score much. But he was in dressing room like an extra behind heroes... When you quit you quit than let other players do their job..
    But yes he is best batsman on his day just like AZHAR stylish and fighter when all fails. Like him wristy and can beat Gavaskar when in flow just like Azhar made SACHIN look ordinary when both played n he in flow. But yes BHARAT never lost a match when VISHWANATH scored a century and that's a record he should be proud of....

    Not a single hook or pull, one short ball and see how he was all at sea here, typically overrated by conservative Bomman shorties gang in an era of few in touch with media..He was good but not as complete and certainly not as great as described..Mohinder Amarnath actually deserves more, a truly great batsman..

      It's a toss up.Remember Gavaskar was an opener who had to face many fiery fast bowlers.He scored 13 centuries against the West Indies when they had very good fast bowlers.The other point to be considered is that whenever India batted first Sunil and his partner went in with no clue about how the pitch was going to behave.This is the difference.This ,of course,is true of all opening batsmen.Also understand that during Gavaskar 's time Indian batsmen didn't face any quality pace in domestic cricket.

      Often Vishy would almost be an opener with India down 2 wickets. Offen Gavaskar and Vishy forget good partnerships. Both are special.

    Looking at this video and the many tests I watched with Vishy and Gavaskar.. I must admit that Tendulkar Is a load of nothing... Brilliant stroke. Fabulous stroke play.. But they build statues for a cricketer who was way.. Way.. Below these 2 greats.. Facing bowlers without helmets... What a shame for politics.. BCCI is just a unaccounted firm.. And today's public can't find the difference in quality.. Honesty.. Sportsmanship and politics..

      Wth 😅
      Both are from Karnataka only but Vishy was Vishy, the situations in which he got 100s others couldn't cross 30.
      KL Rahul is technically sound but I'm yet to a solid hard knock from him when team is in a critical situation

    GRV was the first Indian Stylish Batsman. Gavaskar came later in 1971.
    In the beginning of his Era the Indian Batsmen were afraid to face pace bowling sparing few formers like salim Durani Pataudi etc...
    He had different style of treating bowlers with his wrist work.
    Then years later Sachin entered as an improved version of the two little masters Sunny and Vishy.
    Anyways I credit all three of them Vishy Sunny and of course.
    No comparison should be made of these two old geniuses wi Sachin.
    The Era ib which Sunny and Vishy played there were not much advanced technique as we have today in the form of 3rd umpire. With 3rd umpire things become accurate and clear and Batsmen have the benefit.
    In Vishy and Sunny Era there used to be only umpire on the field they how to exit if the umpires raises hand whether right or wrong.
    Rgds
    Kashi Vishwanath
