for the necklace that you purchased on your honeymoon.. if you have any of those photos framed, you drape the necklace over the frame.. use them as the accessory to your frame.. they stay together and tell a story

Shirts with special missing buttons: buy another set of special buttons! Replace all of the shirt buttons with the new ones and attach one where the lost one was. It’s like up-cycling the shirt because the new buttons can change its WHOLE LOOK ❤️

I had a black stretch cropped blazer with a nice cut, but plain black buttons. I sewed on gold jewel toned buttons and it looked like an expensive designer jacket I saw on Neiman Marcus' web site.

Do NOT get rid of your wedding dress, you can fold the top under & use it for a Christmas tree skirt.

I would add to this list, get rid of anything itchy or scratchy - life is too short to wear itchy clothes!
I am going to try your "would I buy this again" test. Many of my clothes were thrifted, and I probably should have been a bit pickier and not so swayed by the low price.

At the risk of sounding like the mom to this group - you may want to make sure you have a funeral/memorial service appropriate outfit. Sadly, we usually do not have prior notice. I keep things that might not be the most fashion conscious but will do if I need to attend a service.

I just decluttered my wardrobe to get rid of tons of beautiful-condition clothes that are too big for me (when I unexpectedly lost 35 lbs. a few years ago, I changed my style, too). I donated seven enormous trash bags full of casual and comfortable things to a local homeless shelter, who uses everything decent. I still have to to through the more expensive and formal things, like silk tops, for resale. I never donate anything that isn’t in perfect condition, no one will want it. So, now I buy with re-use value in mind and don’t buy cheap polyester/acrylic things that no one would get value from if I pass it on, and I buy only biodegradable fabrics, too, in case the items don’t get a second owner.

Great tips! I have a few: If I buy something new, I donate something old. That way my closet doesn’t get out of control. Also, after 3 knee surgeries, so many of my shoes just weren’t practical anymore!🙁. So, if I find a classic pair that really works, I buy two pair! That way when one wears out, I have a back-up! Thanks again for the entertainment & tips!

Socks - socks without mates, uncomfortable socks (that cute pattern in the sock is in the sole ugggh), trouser socks that do not stay up, short sport socks that slip off your heel, socks that are too tight (yes it has happened), pantyhose with runs - yup still have some for certain occasions/dresses. Quick tip for that one unusual missing button. Often, clothing has an extra matching button stitched inconspicuously to an inside seam. Carefully, cut the threads attaching it to the seam allowance and restitch it in the appropriate place. If the buttons on the sleeves or cuffs match the missing button, remove the buttons from both sleeves, use one as a replacement and stitch the spare one to an inside seam allowance. Next, purchase a card of buttons to replace the buttons on the sleeves....maybe two or four, depending on those specific sleeves. Finding appropriate buttons is an easy task. If there are no identical ones available, chose those that are the most like the front buttons. If they are a bit different, that is fine as well. They will look like a designer detail.

    • @ClaudiaArnold

Sometimes there are two buttons on each cuff to make it adjustable while you only need one. Or if you tuck the shirt in, you can take the lowest one for replacement and put a different one on the part that will be under the waistband anyway.

    • @NK-qw5vt
      @NK-qw5vt ปีที่แล้ว

You can use entirely different cuff buttons too. I've used shiny gold buttons on shirt cuffs and they look very intentional, almost like tiny cufflinks. It has to match the overall vibe though, I probably wouldn't do that on a flannel. Then again, I've also replaced a random flannel shirt button with a bright red heart shaped one before. Idk if I'd still wear this but at least that made it less boring.

I think that the problem sometimes is not the clothes. If your self esteem is low, none of your clothes bring the happy glow?
If it is hard to accept one's body, everything just seems to sit wrong, pull or squeeze, hang wrong or accentuate something you don´t want?
Just thinking out loud here :D

I saw a couple people already suggested my idea: use the necklaces as home decor. We've all seen the pretty bowl on the shelf with the decorative strand of beads, large or small, draped in/over it. You could do something like that. Or if they're appropriate colors for a particular occasion (Easter, baby shower, etc), they can be used in place of store-bought throw away decorations to jazz up the space you're decorating for the particular celebration. Drape them on a light fixture, a mini-tree, etc. Let your imagination run wild.

I decluttered all the colors that didn't look good on me and stuck to a cohesive "winter" palette. Now my closet is harmonious, mix and match, and brings me joy when I open the door! Yes to the impractical clothes. I got rid of all my peasant long sleeves tops because they drove me crazy when doing basic things like dishes cause those dang sleeves were in the way and couldn't be pushed back!

I'm decluttering for the third time in a year and a lot of the clothes I'm getting rid of are ones my mom gave me because she thought they would look nice on me. I already took two bags back to her to return and I hope she finally understands how annoying this is when they're wasting her space. I tried to be nice about it but apparently that didn't get the point across. I'm also planning to move and the last thing I need rn is more stuff... I still have several boxes and bags full of stuff to sell (and if nobody buys it, donate). Sigh.

I liked the video the moment you mentioned "worn out bras". I am not sure why, but holding on to worn out items of clothing that no longer serve their purpose can be psychologically draining. My theory is that it exhausts you psychologically because you know you are holding on to something you shouldn't. It's the wardrobe equivalent of refusing to take your garbage out. My stress levels improved a lot after I got rid of my worn out bras and got new ones. Go figure!☺

    You’re so funny 😂
There’s one thing I would add to that list.
I was starting to get really noticeably cramped & realized I’ve never actually “taken inventory” (counted) & was a bit stunned to find 40 hoodies. 🤯
Ok I do have 3+ jobs (from patrolling parking lots to a sports bar to fitness instructor) & in all 3 cases they are a uniform that get dirty almost immediately, but maybe 10 is enough (actually 15 was my goal…still working on it).
Oh I’m SO bad that if they could be as easily hidden as the tights under my skirt in zoom meetings or the pockets containing ginger lozenges while on stage (oh yes…forgot to add occasional chorus singer for pop stars to that list) I’d be AAAAALL over it! 🙄
I finally figured out to just get rid of the extra clothing rack/storage containers.

Your video came up in my You Tube feed. I was hesitant to watch at first because I thought it was going to be about things no longer in style - like skinny jeans, which I prefer over the bell bottoms everyone is now wearing. But all the items you mentioned I agree with 100 percent. Storing in the attic is a great idea! I cleaned out one of my closets last week and I can't possibly get rid of those super cute Vivienne Westwood shoes that have seen better days, my wedding dress, and all the items that no longer fit but have sentimental value (like what I wore the night I met my husband and dozens of concert tees). I also have a pair of completely worn out shoes I can't part with because a dear friend who is now deceased loved them so much, she gently caressed them when I wore them at her place back in 2002. A part of me says, "Just dump it!" But, I love the attic idea even more. THANK YOU! :)

This was great - I like the simple way you went thru all the items of clothing we need to clear out. I did laugh at the end as if I followed this strictly I would only have a few items left (now isn't that the most difficult lesson to learn ). So I will begin this process again, slowly decluttering as I know that this is what you are saying also - do this at your own pace but do it as you will feel better! I am still amazed at how much clothes I have cleared out but yet how much clothes I still have left.

You know what else I would add (only because I just did this) ..get rid of anything that makes you feel subconscious, so you're focusing on how you feel other than the experience of wherever you are. Btw you inspired me to get rid of a ton of clothes! I even had old maternity clothes laying around lol.

There are some reasons to keep NWT items. I have some I bought in November for spring and summer and others for special occasions. But they have time limits set on them. I was raised to keep a good dress and have a basic one, clean and in my size.

Love your video with excellent ideas for organizing my wardrobe! Would definitely start purging my wardrobe soon. For worn leather shoes and boots: no need to get rid of them, there are ways to restore them back to their original condition. There are saddle soap for leather cleaning, neatsfoot/mink oil for leather conditioning, and leather dye to paint the chipped areas back to the original color. These can all be purchased thru amazon. Or you can send them to professionals to have them restored. With proper care, leather goods should last decades, it is not only environmentally friendly, but also saves a lot of money. Plus, you get to keep your favorite boots!

    • @amydevol8224
      @amydevol8224 ปีที่แล้ว

I do the same. For this reason, I tend to prefer real leather in shoes and some hand bags. Plastic is hard to restore and doesn't breathe or last nearly as long.

Another great video today. I agree with you but will tell you it's not too late for some of those old vintage clothes. I decided to wear some of my pieces from the 80s, 90s, 2000s just so the investment wasn't wasted. The young people wanted them and asked about how I got them. Some were really funky. Some people my age liked them, too. I like that at this time in fashion, just about anything goes as long as the cut and fit flatter your shape, and vintage is big. I try to fix pieces that need hemming or buttons sewn on. In addition, I usually only buy new pieces (new to me) from Poshmark. And I wear them, too!

Yes!!! Ready to do another clean out, my weight has fluctuated so much these two years. I’m finally at a space where I’m comfortable and I can get rid of my hiding my body clothes. And buy items that I love instead. I got rid of the stuff that’s too small, because honestly my body changed so much after having a baby. I understand that it’s literally physically impossible for my hip bone to shrink.

You can take worn out boots to a cobbler. If they are shoes you can't replace and were expensive it's a worth the investment. I disagree with not owning clothes that don't fit you in the current moment. My weight fluctuates. I don't want to lose or gain 20lbs and have to go out and buy new clothes. I keep clothes in different sizes.

However, I hope know one tries to do all of this at once. It takes some thought and planning in the execution so one is not overwhelmed and give up. Keep those necklaces. When my grandma was slowly declining into dementia, she would hold little trinkets from her days with my grandpa and smile, a certain cardigan or bracelet she had for 60 years and she would be taken right back and be calm, happy and content. Her memories were gone until she had these couple of small tokens to remind her. I now keep things that jog an emotional memory like a cheap fan I bought at a street fair, for this reason despite being very minimal otherwise. It also stops me from buying new/more as often.

Good advice. I am pretty good at the big purge. I don’t buy stuff any more that doesn’t suit me or look really good. Bras are an issue! Where I live, they are so hard to find. Ordering online is a nightmare. But I did go through my underwear and got rid of all the stuff I don’t wear and is probably past it’s peak! I give my used clothing to my former workmates or the thrift shop.
