I decluttered my closet today with a friend who is also a subscriber to your channel. Together, we went through every item in my closet, including accessories and shoes, and did an amazing job of ridding myself of those (often) expensive items that I bought because “they were on sale”, because they “were a good deal”, or because “they fit me”. Man, this was not easy but feels so good. My friend was a constant source of reality checks, asking things like “where do you see yourself wearing that?” Or “what else does that go with?” Or “how do you feel in that?” So thanks. Jolene
Haha!! I have one and I wear it often (my denim on denim look 🙌🙌) I can’t see needing more than 1 BUT if you wear all of them then I don’t see what the problem is 😄❤️
"Gentle reminder that there are only 7 days in a week." This hit me hard, I buy too many clothes and they aren't getting worn enough bc there are only 7 days in a week. I need to cut back on bringing in too many pieces.
Lol so true. It’s a good feeling. Especially since you know you really want it and will use it because it passed the test of time - it wasn’t just a passing desire.
I thrift most my clothes and i make it a rule to sell, trade or donate before i buy new. Having too many clothes can be just as bad as not enough because you can't see what you have and it is hard to make new outfit combos amongst too much.
I don't buy things because they are on sale but I also don't buy things that are full price even if I want them because I know they were heavily marked up and in 1 m8nth they will be on sale for what the retail price should have been. Example a top that I view as a $30 top is $65 today but will be $30 if I just wait a few weeks
I am slim and petite. When vanity sizing began, if I found anything at all to fit me, I purchased that in every colour. My style is classic and J. Crew occasionally carries my size of 000 Petite. I do like solids with the occasional small print. Vintage shoes have my size 4B and so does a company in the UK. Everything made in the USA is for short people who are fat, Plus sized people, Tall slim people, or average sized people who are a bit heavy. Shoes start at size 6. 7,8, are popular sizes as well as wide widths. I have a friend who is 5'll inches and slim. Hard for her to find pants long enough, shoes in size 10.5 or 11. Fashion, including Luxury fashion, caters to the masses, no exceptions.
I made that same rule when I started living on my own after 25 years of marriage: not buying something now just because it's cheap and it fills up an empty space until I can afford what I want. If I wouldn't pay full price for it, right now, in the condition it's in, I'm not buying it. If it's not a "hell YES," it's a "hell no." Result? I am now surrounded only by things I love, that love me back.
I purchase certain items, like Ralph Lauren blazers, on eBay and vintage. Absolutely great quality and exactly the timeless and classic item I have always loved and will always love!
My most worn pieces are thrifted ❤ When I organize my closet to where i can see everything I take out clothes I haven’t worn and pick them up for a year and then revisit. If I don’t get excited about it …it’s time to donate or sell. I don’t want to be an impulse buyer again. That gets me too many clothes and overwhelm. Keeping it simple is key. Tops with extra detail is what I am on the lookout for 👍🏼
If I see something I like, I ask myself "Why do you like it?" Typically, I like it because I already own something very similar! That usually keeps me from the purchasing. At least I'm consistent!
I, too, have an intentional capsule wardrobe, which is comprised of almost-all solids…. It’s been way easier! I have just a handful of well loved printed dresses and skirts left.
I like many of your fashion tips! Sticking to mostly solids and less prints. Not purchasing same item in different colors which I’m guilty of 😆. And not impulse buying because on sale. 😊
Multicolor exception is classic layering pieces like tank tops. Different colors can be layered under each other or under jackets, sweaters, dresses; and the different colors create a whole new feeling outfit just from the contrast or harmony of the color. And tanks can be tucked in or loose and belted. I am with you on print mistakes, but I still love to have a few. My test is "Do I wear the print or does the print wear me?". Bold stripes and geometrics can be too distracting on me but fluid watercolor effects can make me look striking. A nice camo or animal print can be, well, camouflaging of my lumps and bumps or my lunch or the wet spot where I tried to wash out a spill or splash. Hasn't everyone chosen a "special" dinner outfit in anticipation of unruly but very delicious spaghetti? On the other hand, I am very surprised at how often I reached for printed pants first in the last year. And I seem to wear all my 3/4 sleeve tops first right now for elbow coverage and keeping my sleeves out of the dish water. When I am home, I seem to be washing something in the sink every 35 minutes, but I still want to look good. A fun video might be reviewing the styles of characters in TV series. Who is your "wannabe.". Mine is Laura Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke series. Second place is Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls. Prints that "read," as more of an overall texture are safer but sometimes I don't want to be safe. Prints have a way of expressing my mood that just cannot be achieved with solids.
Extremely great contents here, I love Coach purses, when I used to work, I bought quite a few of them, now I kept only a few, I never spent over $250 on a purse, compared to other shoppers, but I agree with you on the spending, also, it's so funny, I just went to Kohls today, to return a top to get a smaller size, i have the same style top in different colors, the reason why I keep doing this, b/c the top is flattering, I just hate my body shape, but that's an issue I have with myself, you do point out things that we can all relate, this is why I love watching your videos!
I was a buyer for a boutique during the cold shoulder trend. We felt it was overdone already the first time we saw it at the trade shows. We bought one style of it, once. Sold none. Sale rack pretty quick. The End. Personally, I felt the same for my own wardrobe...I just felt, however this happened, by the time it was ALL over the place at the "it" trend...it felt already "over", to me. I never bought one. I also never bought one "shacket." Wasn't a fan of the look, but also, just over done and I knew was going to be quick to exit. I'd much prefer a cute, stylish "fall" (since shackets seem to be mostly fall styles) jacket or blazer or even cardigan. I don't need to look like a lumber jack. But yea, I don't buy into any of the immediately overdone trends. Quick in, Saturated market, quick out. Not a sensible way to spend your money...unless you LOVE it...then buy one or two.
About 15 years ago, I bought a basic long sleeved T shirt that actually had the exact right sleeve length for me. I ended up buying it in every colour, then when they also came out with 3/4 length sleeve I did the same. I wore them constantly at work and they went with everything. Now, 15 years later, I am semi retired and am STILL wearing these basic tops, layered under various jackets and sweaters. I have gotten more than my money's worth from these garments.
You totally nailed this video. I have made every mistake that you identified including the cold shoulder tops...which I loved, by the way. Thanks for refocusing me in my shopping!
The trends I love are usually revivals of classic styles, like the collared Polo knits and contrast-color trim or piping that are currently in style. I loved them the last time around and I love them now.
I was shopping yesterday for some filler pieces--I had shopped my closet first. The saleswoman who was helping me brought me several printed tops and I gasped at each one--no wonder they were on sale. I bought only solids. Well, I just looked on the Banana Republic site--my favorite store--not ONE printed top. A few striped tops but very classic and elegant. Thanks for reminding me why I don't buy prints anymore. Great video.
My favorite classic items come from Banana Republic and Loft. Their quality is good and will last for years. I made so many mistakes buying cheap clothes. Lesson learned.
Flocculating sizes is a real thing, so glad you addressed this. I just lost 40lbs in the last 6 months and have had to purchase new clothing that actually fits me. I've been guiltily of nearly everyone of these spending faux pas and you are spot on to avoid these traps. I love classic dressing and don't buy into "trend spending" very often. After declutching my closet and eliminating things that I no longer like, my spending habits were a real eye opener for me. I donated all the new (now to big) tanks from last summer which still had tags on them 6 months later. I've always been picky about what I wear, but today I am far more educated and cautious about buying for my body type, keeping a capsule wardrobe, and having just a few fun pieces to choose from on those special days when I'm feeling lighthearted. Thanks for for all you do to always bring us relevant content! Warm wishes from sunny SoCal ~ Dawna
Great points. I am going on a cruise soon and have been out shopping. Most of what I purchased is prints. I plan to return some items, but just staring at my lot is...hmmmm. I am looking at this differently now.
I used to be all able printed tops too! Now I'm more basic, but i don't want to be boring so one way to add prints is through a scarf or shoes... That way you can keep your outfit neutral and still have a fun pop of print😊
I agree with everything except prints 😊 i got an amazing red cashmere sweater with a dinosaur on it and i love it ❤ hahaha! And i love hearts 💜 all over
How about trends you are in love with ? I have maybe 4 faux leather pants/jeans: brow, black, silver, gold. Been wearing them non stop when it’s cold last 3 years! Hoping I wear them out before they look bad!
I terribly regret going for therapy!! There is so much help to get online on TH-cam for free, from ppl with actual experience who went through similar traumas or ailments and I have gotten so much from their advice and expertise that some seriously saved my life. Also there are great support groups online or on Facebook, and no life therapist can beat that. Basically I wish I'd not be so pressured to go the 'acceptable, traditional' route or else how would you heal and able to grow... rather the many therapist I saw throughout many years actually added to my trauma and prevented healing and moving on. Just sharing, I know that's not the point of the video, lol, and also not the point of your ad. But as you wiggled this in, i am just sharing my 2 cents on my regrets!
@@merrilew 'Crappy childhood fairy', helped me a lot after leaving a toxic marriage. She is amazing in helping you rebuild and move on and understand how this all happened to you. During the relationship, I got extremely educated by Dr Ramani, she opened my eyes to the eventuality that my spouse may be a Narcissist. Her videos gave me the strength to understand my situation, analyze it and make the right decisions for my future. Mostly I am now suffering from PTSD and learning now how to emotionally regulate and griw from my past experiences. I also gained a lot from motivational videos, to get out of funks, anxiety and depression, how to do proper self care and how to become financially independent. Hope that helped.
Totally agree Anna! Especially your point about prints. Very rarely have I enjoyed a printed garmet for more than the first couple of wears. Thanks for this sage advice. ❤ Edit: One final point. Never, ever, buy something because the sales associate tells you it looks fabulous on you. Remember, these ladies are PAID to SELL clothing! I have learned the hard way just to trust my own taste. If I'm on the fence, I leave it there, knowing I can always come back or order it online if I decide to buy it later.
Anna I love your videos! I am not naturally stylish and I have received so many compliments since I implemented your advice. Even more importantly I feel confident in the way I style my clothes again for the first time in a very very long time!
Right before this video popped up on autoplay, I was going through my closet and regretting some cheap blouses I purchased from Old Navy, Kohl’s, etc. You know the ones made of either rayon or thin cotton, that wrinkle super badly after one wash? I’m usually in a hurry most mornings, and am far too lazy to iron or even steam these shirts. Even putting them in the dryer after spraying, or with Dryel did not make them look new again. Now they’re in the donate bag!
Sometimes Old Navy does have some high quality fabrics, like some of their jeans. Also, this year they have a high quality T shirt line called Vintage T Shirt. The fabric is nice thick cotton that doesn't stretch out of shape. I shop carefully at ON because I agree a lot of their clothing is cheap and crappy. But a few prices each season are really great. And when you find one, you gotta love the price!
I could never afford nor would I buy a designer bag . I have unknown well made bags. They look very expensive but they were under 400 dollars…which I think is still a lot of money…I love your videos!
Hello, long time follower, first time commenter. I fell instantly in love with that all-brown look. Could you please share the link details, pretty please? I can never find quality satin/silk fabric skirts & quality pullovers. Thanks in advance !
I’m not a tag-hag. It’s very low class in my opinion. The truest wealthy don’t wear labels. Aldo I was sales queen. Now I ask myself “would I buy this if it was full price?”
Hi Anna, I’ve recently discovered your channel, and I think you give amazing fashion advice. But I have a question what about clothing and dressing for someone who is not tall or particularly skinny. Have you done a video on that and if you haven’t could you?
I've reached the point where if I hear myself say 'It'll do in a pinch', it stays at the store. I have bought the 'same style' in different colors, but it's a solid, long-sleeved crew neck & I have it in neutrals, & I wear them all so much either by itself or as a base under other tops/cardigans.
When it comes to my weight fluctuating. I buy pants one size larger and just wear a belt when it's too big. Also, this gives you more flexibility during the day - especially if you eat a bigger meal! For jeans, honestly, just buy a new pair when you gain weight. I think jeans are difficult and have to fit you just right, so just have a couple pairs that fit you in whatever stage you're at.
This is the drawback to modern clothes. They treat people as static mannequins instead of living breathing organisms that fluctuate (sometimes throughout the day, e.g. food belly). Spandex is the modern solution to getting clothes to fit a range of weights, but as we all know, just because we can fit into that spandex garment doesn’t mean it actually looks good at that stretched out stage. Historical clothes were designed around a woman’s fluctuating body. One example is the 18th century skirt. The ties in the front and back allowed for the skirt to fit (and look good) a very wide range of waist sizes. There is a version of that skirt that has been adapted to look modern, but it’s a pattern, so sewing skills are required. I think it was called the coquette skirt (or something like that).
I disagree about the sale clothes, at least for me. I never buy clothes unless they ARE on sale. Last year I fell in love with a jacket at a big name department store and it was 97.00. There is no way I was going to ;ay that so I passed but I kept looking on their website and two months later it showed up on their website for 27.00. I bought two, a blue denim and a washed charcoal color and I've work those jackets more than any other jackets or coats in my closet. I DO know about buying things you regret and like most of us, over the years have made quite a few mistakes. I made a pact with myself about 6 years ago, if it's not on sale, if it does not fit correctly, if I don't love it, it's NOT coming home with me. I WILL change buttons if needed. I wear only silver jewelry so if I love something with wood or gold buttons, I'll change them.
I fell into not thinking Gucci was the best but that Madewell jeans were the best. I got 2 pairs (thrifted) that looked great. Then proceeded to buy more. 2 ripped within a week and 2 were so dang painfully uncomfortable. I bought them solely for being Madewell and then they were the portal to hell. I’m also mad I paired down my closet then went and filled it up with a specific brand that hurt to wear.
Do you have an effective way to lable folded jeans in your closet. I like to fold jeans, but finding the cut and legnth i want that day makes a mess of the pile. Even if i pull my outfit the night before, it's more time consuming than i would like. Another great time saver would be purse inserts that make changing to a different purse faster. I miss out on using cute purses if i am running out of time.
As I am laying in bed this early morning looking at my closet of dark clothing I am beginning to regret buying what's in it. Maybe not all because I have started a "Key Pieces Only" wardrobe.of classic pieces that won't go out of fashion.
Great video! I know exactly what you mean! I bought a emerald green dress in 2018 with a little flower patterns on it and slight peek a boo shoulders. I loved it! got tons of compliments and now I can't seem to wear it again so I avoid allot of patterns now and go for the solid colors
Anna!! Do you have any basic camisoles you recommend? Or do you have a video where you recommend some? I would love to find some durable white and ivory camis! (non spaghetti straps)
I have designer bags and slgs that I've had for 30 years. Don't regret them in any way. The sale thing is true. I have a list now that I keep for stuff I need and check the sales only for those things. Avoid trends unless you REALLY LOVE IT OMG, and then think twice. ;-D
I buy many pieces that I will only buy if on sale, that I would not pay full price for. Especially pieces that my cost per wear is high, I know I won't wear it a lot, but I love it and it's pretty and soooooo cute...but I can't justify the high full price.
It's crazy how that 8 to 10lbs on me is the difference in a size! I had been feeling so stuffed in my clothes for a year but now I'm down l8ke 4lbs and they fit better. Another 4lbs and they will fit perfect. 2 more after that and they will l9ok too big.
SOLID video topic! I got on the designer RTW train a couple of years ago and the quality just isn't that impressive! I've been enjoying Express now and it's more my style, quality and fit. Also, when I moved to Oahu, I bought a lot of cheap floral dresses off Amazon that have been donated ALREADY. I look so cringe in most florals! Can you do a video on Cool Girl Chic, I think that's more my style.
Whenever in my life I have been on a diet and after I lost all the weight ...I each time went on a fashion shopping spree...cause I felt great!...but each time I would naturally set into what I think now is my natural weight...but I would waste so much money on clothes that I could not wear anymore. This is another reason why that I like the over sized trend...I can get clothes that are a bit bigger but still look great..even if I go up or down 10 pounds
Prints are a hard one for me because sometimes they wow me and I want to buy, but then I have to really think about what I will wear it with and how long will I like it for. Awe, and we all love Mr. Rogers. But yeah, he kind of had a boring wardrobe lol
For clothes that don't fit, I give myself three years. If I haven't been able to wear the piece in three years, I get rid of it. Any more time, and it risks being out of date or it gets "storage stink". Any less, I might feel regret and create a feedback loop of insecurity and fear of letting go.
My newt absession is a cashmere sweaters and vests. I found so many very afordable French and Italian designers on Vinted. They are way better than a mainstream cashmere. Now I have collection of. But how to stop? I really do not need so many….
Are you wearing all of them and getting use out of them? If so, I wouldn't say there is anything wrong.. it's when it becomes the same item basically in 7 different colors I think you risk getting in a style rut ❤️❤️

I buy stuff that I yearned for when it was full price. When it goes on sale, I feel like, "Come to Mama, baby!"
Same here!!
I love florals and prints! My opinion though.
Nothing wrong with them! I love a lot of them… just not for very long 🤦♀️ 🤣
Summer lends itself more to prints, especially living in S. Florida. There are more choices, particularly for knits for cooler weather.
I'm so with you!Printed tops, they never last. Your advice is very useful.
So true. I bought a Louis Vuitton Bag 6 years ago and i've used it about 5 times . What a waste of money!
I do have 5 workout tops that are the same except for color! But I'm really fussy about how they fit, so it's easiest to have several.
I can totally relate.
Love all this, Emilia! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm very particular about the styles I like and how they fit, so if I find something that's just right, I buy several colors. I've never regretted it.
I have always avoided prints. Navy and white stripe shirt is it.
That’s a great looking top you’re wearing, love it!
I used to be all able printed tops too! Now I'm more basic, but i don't want to be boring so one way to add prints is through a scarf or shoes... That way you can keep your outfit neutral and still have a fun pop of print😊
The only prints I like over time are classic mens paisley or little diamonds or stripes.
I agree with everything except prints 😊 i got an amazing red cashmere sweater with a dinosaur on it and i love it ❤ hahaha! And i love hearts 💜 all over
The top you are wearing in this video is so cute!!
How about trends you are in love with ? I have maybe 4 faux leather pants/jeans: brow, black, silver, gold. Been wearing them non stop when it’s cold last 3 years! Hoping I wear them out before they look bad!
Someone once gave me a great tip about purchases go for how much you earn per hour and would you be prepared to work that many for a particular item.
Agree about the prints!
I do like some classic stripes.
Are there any channels that you would recommend. I would be interested in listening.
Mr Roger’s had a great uniform. He loved the look, and it was comfy. I really liked that about him.
Totally agree Anna! Especially your point about prints. Very rarely have I enjoyed a printed garmet for more than the first couple of wears. Thanks for this sage advice. ❤
Edit: One final point.
Totally with you on solids - I’m all solids now !
Hi Anna! This is kinda random but I’ll be in NYC for a long weekend and booked the Dream hotel you showed 1 year ago. I’m super excited! :)
That motto is 💯 true
My closest is mostly solids too
I always wear more colors and prints in the spring and summer, subtle prints not the crazy ones
I really like your top! I've been looking for something like that
I love you to pieces. Thanks for being a real person
The one you missed, don't go buy a new wardrobe because your life has changed. Becoming a stay at home mom, retiring, major job change. Ease into it.
Hi Anna, I’ve recently discovered your channel, and I think you give amazing fashion advice. But I have a question what about clothing and dressing for someone who is not tall or particularly skinny. Have you done a video on that and if you haven’t could you?
Excellent tips Anna
Thank you, Linda!
Did you ever watch the original What Not to Wear and they insisted on wearing patterned blouses? I totally bought into that!
Agree , with the good deals.❤😂❤
They are so hard to pass up in the moment! 😃
Yes…..solids
As I am laying in bed this early morning looking at my closet of dark clothing I am beginning to regret buying what's in it. Maybe not all because I have started a "Key Pieces Only" wardrobe.of classic pieces that won't go out of fashion.
Great video! I know exactly what you mean! I bought a emerald green dress in 2018 with a little flower patterns on it and slight peek a boo shoulders. I loved it! got tons of compliments and now I can't seem to wear it again so I avoid allot of patterns now and go for the solid colors
I think we've all been there for sure!
Anna!! Do you have any basic camisoles you recommend? Or do you have a video where you recommend some? I would love to find some durable white and ivory camis! (non spaghetti straps)
Nice video Anna. TY🎉🎉
I have designer bags and slgs that I've had for 30 years. Don't regret them in any way. The sale thing is true. I have a list now that I keep for stuff I need and check the sales only for those things. Avoid trends unless you REALLY LOVE IT OMG, and then think twice. ;-D
🤣🤣🤣
I pride myself in never paying full price on something because companies always have sales.
What is link for the top you are wearing in this video? The one you provide is a duplicate of the link for a purse. Thank you.
Whoops! I’ll go fix that here it is! Use REID for an extra discount rstyle.me/+jXq87WX-ml7l06Q5aWTGHg
I buy many pieces that I will only buy if on sale, that I would not pay full price for. Especially pieces that my cost per wear is high, I know I won't wear it a lot, but I love it and it's pretty and soooooo cute...but I can't justify the high full price.
Good advice
I like that style description! ❤️❤️❤️
I say to myself, Do I love this? Is it comfortable? Do I feel incredible in it? If the answer is well, or maybe, or hmmm...then its a No.Thanks Anna.
Girl we have allll been there!!! Trust me! ❤️❤️❤️
Prints are a hard one for me because sometimes they wow me and I want to buy, but then I have to really think about what I will wear it with and how long will I like it for. Awe, and we all love Mr. Rogers. But yeah, he kind of had a boring wardrobe lol
Do you have a link to the necklace you are wearing? It's beautiful.
Thanks! It's old / sold out :( Here is her new version: rvlv.me/wN4pfu ❤️
For clothes that don't fit, I give myself three years. If I haven't been able to wear the piece in three years, I get rid of it. Any more time, and it risks being out of date or it gets "storage stink". Any less, I might feel regret and create a feedback loop of insecurity and fear of letting go.
The cite you posted for the top you are wearing is for purses.
Fixing! Sorry about that! Here it is: rstyle.me/+jXq87WX-ml7l06Q5aWTGHg
I dont work to make other people rich ! I get bags at Burlington. Great place
Been there done that, will not purchase luxury bags, I think I’ve had them all, other than the latest ones 😂
@@ANNAREID29 oh thanks! Thay all are very different and i do have them in different styles, colours and thikness. And happy with all of them. So nothing is wrong with me ))) Will make a pic of your comment for my Friend 😂😅 thanks a lot! 🌹 Next is a linen for summer 😂🤣😅
